I watched Spirited Away years back and absolutely loved it. It was my first exposure to Hayao Miyazaki’s incredible worlds, and I was hooked from the beginning. A few years back, I decided I’d see more of his films to catch up on the things I’d missed. Princess Mononoke, Ponyo, My Neighbor Totoro, and Kiki’s Delivery Service were S-tier films for me in no time. But then, I reached Howl’s Moving Castle, and I was actually kinda disappointed.

Not that it was terrible, but it just didn’t feel right, you know? After watching it, I learned that it was based on Diana Wynne Jones’ novel of the same name, and suddenly it all made sense. Princess Mononoke is hands down one of the finest creations of Hayao Miyazaki that enjoyed unprecedented success when it was first released in 1997. However, now it is being re-released as a 4K IMAX movie on March 26 in both subbed and dubbed versions.

This is not only a technical achievement but proof of the unbroken legacy that Hayao Miyazaki has. Even after so many years of its release, fans are as excited about it as if it is a brand new film from the director.
But, there was once a time when this beloved movie ran the risk of being tampered with by none other than the notorious Harvey Weinstein. Thankfully, he was no match for Miyazaki, who refused to just sit and watch him do as he pleased.

Studio Ghibli are considered the masters of anime movies. Over the years, they've released plenty of films that have become beloved by the anime community. However, most of these films follow an unfortunate trend that keeps them from being perfect in every way. These films need sequels or spin-offs to carry on their story. Otherwise, these films end up feeling like there's something missing.
Studio Ghibli is neglecting an important opportunity to turn fan-favorite films into franchises. Each movie the studio makes is another opportunity to enchant audiences by building on an already fantastic world, only for the directors and producers to move on to the next unrelated film when the last is done. While these films are fantastic on their own, turning them into a series is an opportunity best not missed. Studio Ghibli showing restraint with sequels is admirable, but it's prevented the studio from developing its serious franchise potential.

Thankfully, Kamome Shirahama's delightful, award-winning manga series, Witch Hat Atelier, is due for a Spring 2025 anime release and offers a successor for Ghibli enthusiasts.

Hayao Miyazaki’s movies are celebrated all over the world. But as more recent films get popular, old ones are forgotten. In the wake of successes like Spirited Away and The Boy and the Heron, fans tend to forget the films that shaped Ghibli’s path to success.
Miyazaki’s most popular movies are often thought to be Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and My Neighbor Totoro. But there is another underrated movie that simply grows more and more relatable as time passes.

Hayao Miyazaki Made Us Emotionally Attached to an Animated Cat Well Before Gints Zilbalodis’s ‘Flow’
Gints Zilbalodis’ Oscar-winning animation, Flow, made its audience attached to a bunch of animals desperate for survival. But Hayao Miyazaki had accomplished this decades ago with one of his most popular works, Kiki’s Delivery Service.
In Kiki’s Delivery Service, an iconic character is Jiji, the cat who always accompanies Kiki. And when the witch could no longer communicate with Jiji, it broke the hearts of fans. However, it was a necessary step in the maturing of the protagonist.

Ever since the beginning of Kiki’s Delivery Service, Jiji has been there right alongside Kiki. From marveling at the world to going on whacky adventures, Jiji was with Kiki through thick and thin. But then came a point when Kiki lost the ability to talk with Jiji.

Anime dubbing has evolved a lot in the last 30 years. Localization has gotten a lot better, along with the translations and script writing, which means the dubbing has also gotten more advanced as time has gone on. This is a really good thing, as the days of Speed Racer are long passed. Anime dubbing has also had a mixed reputation for a very, very long time, despite the many strides that have been made in that arena. In fact, many dub artists in anime these days are celebrities in their own right, coming out to the screams of adoring fans at conventions across the world.
There is something fun about having a recognizable celebrity pop up in anime. Playing the "wait, I know that voice!" game with one's friends can be a lot of fun, and sliding down that IMDb rabbit hole can be more than a little gratifying. Hollywood...

Kiki’s Delivery Service is one of the most nostalgic and beloved films Hayao Miyazaki has directed. From the protagonist’s journey of self-discovery to the feel-good vibes of the film, there’s nothing fans don’t love about it. However, the ending left us with little closure and major heartache.
Jiji, Kiki’s familiar, talks to her throughout the film. The two had an understanding of each other that no one else did. However, by the end of the film when she regains her powers, he can only meow at her, indicating she grew up. The English dubbing, on the other hand, doesn’t include this ending.

Kiki’s Delivery Servicecame out 36 years ago, and it remains one of Studio Ghibli’s best films, as well as being the highest-rated Hayao Miyazakifilm on Rotten Tomatoes. Miyazaki is known to draw from his own experience in his movies, with his most recent project, The Boy and the Heron, being his most autobiographical project to date. Kiki's Delivery Service is also very much about Miyazaki, but in a different way-- it serves as a metaphor for Miyazaki's creative process. Kiki's journey with her powers contains important wisdom that will resonate with artists in any medium.

Studio Ghibli has delighted fans for generations, producing such iconic films such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and Kiki’s Delivery Service, yet many viewers only think of Hayao Miyazaki when they think of Studio Ghibli. However, the studio owes much of its depth, artistry and emotional resonances — and indeed, even the studio’s origins — to its co-founder, Isao Takahata.
Often overshadowed by his more commercially prolific and well-known counterpart, Takahata was a master storyteller and artistic visionary in his own right. His contributions to Studio Ghibli, his impact on the world of animation and his legacy continue to live on in an immeasurable manner. And while not often mentioned in the same breath as Studio Ghibli — like Hayao Miyazaki tends to be — Isao Takahata defined Studio Ghibli as we know it today just as much as Miyazaki did.

If you’re a fan of animated Sherlock Holmes adaptations like The Great Mouse Detective, you need to check out Sherlock Hound. This animated series originally aired in 1984 and is now available on Prime Video. In this adorable series, the famous detective Sherlock (voiced by Larry Moss in the English dub) is an anthropomorphic dog. Hayao Miyazaki, the animation legend behind Kiki’s Delivery Service and Ponyo, was the original director attached to the series and worked on many of the episodes. Other directors on the series include Kyosuke Mikuriya who is known for Lupin the 3rd. Even the episodes Miyazaki didn’t direct still retain his style. Like Howl’s Moving Castle, the world of Sherlock Hound includes steampunk elements that give it a distinctive flair.

Kiki’s Delivery Service might not be the first Ghibli movie that comes to your mind, but it is still one of Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpieces. It successfully captures the essence of Miyazaki movies, and despite being a film for children, does not shy away from portraying adult themes.
The movie might have been released in 1989, but it is more relevant than ever now. Those who watch Kiki’s Delivery Service in their 20s, 30s, or later can relate to its themes. In a world where one has to constantly struggle between doing what they love and survival, Kiki emerges as a hero with important guidance.

Kiki, the beloved teen witch that most anime fans know from Studio Ghibli's classic film, Kiki's Delivery Service, is currently celebrating the 40th anniversary of her original creation. To help commemorate this historic moment, Spy x Family manga creator Tatsuya Endo has drawn a gorgeous tribute illustration for Kiki that doubles as a brand-new cover for the original Kiki's Delivery Service novel series.
Four years before director Hayao Miyazaki's beloved film adaptation, children's author Eiko Kadono released Volume 1 of Kiki's Delivery Service, which chronicles the coming-of-age of a 13-year-old witch who leaves home to continue her magical training as an independent young adult. Per PR Times, Endo recently unveiled his new cover for the novel, which recreates Kiki's famous moonlit journey to her new home-away-from-home. Japanese publisher Fukuinkan Bunko will use Endo's artwork for a renewed limited run of Kiki's Delivery Service Volume 1, which will hit shelves starting Feb.

Studio Ghibli films are marked by many things. From the classic hand-drawn animation, the romanticism of life’s daily occurrences to not-so hidden references to social issues, these are some of the various elements that make Hayao Miyazaki movies distinguishable.
Once anyone watches a Ghibli movie, they can instantly tell who the creator is. But what is it exactly that makes Miyazaki’s movies so distinctive? Since the director himself never answered the question, his son, Goro Miyazaki, filled up for him.

Almost every anime fan at this point might have known about the famous beef between Hayao Miyazaki’s Studio Ghibli and the controversial Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein, as it was one of Hollywood’s most talked-about confrontations. As the story goes, Weinstein, then head of Miramax, demanded extensive edits to Princess Mononoke before agreeing to its American release. In response, a samurai sword reportedly arrived at Miramax’s office with the words “No cuts” etched into a note.

For years, this bold act has been credited to Hayao Miyazaki himself, enhancing his reputation as an uncompromising auteur. However, in an interview, Miyazaki revealed that the truth behind the sword story is quite different. The act wasn’t his but Toshio Suzuki’s; the producer who has been the backbone of Studio Ghibli’s success for decades.

Kiki's Delivery Service is one of the calmer narratives brought to life by Studio Ghibli, though it remains one of the animation company's most beloved works. The story of the young witch Kiki, despite its magical elements, is quite relatable, especially as she learns how to balance the magic she loves with the new career the witch must take upon. Kiki's determination and journey to overcome these personal obstacles, alongside the never-ending sweetness the film has, makes her story unforgettably charming.
Rarely seen without Kiki is Jiji, her black cat and familiar. Voiced by the late Phil Hartman in the Disney English dub of Kiki's Delivery Service, Jiji is given a sassy character, rich with personality and quick with blunt remarks. Though the black cat can be sour and timid sometimes, he is a loyal friend and a supportive ally for Kiki as she learns to navigate her new town.

Studio Ghibli recently created a new way for fans to bring the magic of My Neighbor Totoro and Kiki's Delivery Service into their homes. As a loving tribute to these Hayao Miyazaki classics, the studio's official store has just released a new pair of "diorama-style" hourglasses that capture the cozy, tranquil vibes of both films.
As shown below, Donguri Sora's "Camphor Tree and Totoros" diorama depicts a cute scene of Totoro and his companions relaxing and playing in the woods. Additionally, a small glass timepiece hangs from one of the tree's upper boughs, allowing Totoro lovers to keep track of time the old-fashioned way. Inspired by the setting of Kiki's childhood home, Donguri Sora's "Kokiri's Laboratory" diorama portrays Jiji the cat on top of a cluttered desk covered with potion-making ingredients and tools used by Kiki's mother, Kokiri. If there’s one thing that can divide the anime fandoms, it’s the dub vs sub debate. Both factions can’t stand the other, and the arguments are severe enough to strain friendships. But you’ll be glad to know that Hayao Miyazaki doesn’t distinguish between them.

Two popular products inspired by two of Studio Ghibli's most iconic fantasy films recently returned to the company's official online store. Ghibli fans once again have a chance to purchase Donguri Sora's exclusive Howl's Moving Castle and Kiki's Delivery Service-themed flower vases.
The vases are part of the "Donguri Closet" collection, which primarily features clothing and home decor items inspired by Studio Ghibli's expansive cast of anime heroines. Accordingly, both products depict memorable scenes starring Kiki and Sophie Hatter. Howl's "Dreamlike Time" flower vase is adorned with an illustration of Sophie's first encounter with the handsome wizard, Howl. Kiki's "Tonight's Departure" vase similarly pays tribute to the sequence where Kiki leaves her childhood home and embarks on her coming-of-age journey. As detailed on Donguri Sora, both vases feature "retro color schemes" somewhat dissimilar from the style used in their respective films. Cbr readers can check out these designs below.

Kiki's Delivery Service is a 1989 anime film by Studio Ghibli. In this classic Ghibli film, a young witch named Kiki leaves home for the first time, accompanied by her black cat Jiji. Together, the two go to the seaside town of Koriko and establish Kiki's job as a witch, beginning Kiki's namesake delivery service.
The movie wouldn't be complete without Jiji's sass and playfulness. However, halfway throughout the movie, Kiki loses her magic and Jiji can no longer speak the human language. Depending on whether fans watch the dubbed or subbed version depends on whether Jiji ever regains the ability to speak. However, this traditional ending in the Japanese version may not be as faithful to the source as fans think.

Many Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli fans won’t know this, but the anime films created and produced by Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki were internationally distributed on Home Entertainment mediums by Disney in many countries. This deal was made in August 1996 when the Walt Disney Company and Tokuma Shoten, the parent company of Studio Ghibli, formed a partnership.

According to the deal, Walt Disney Studios would be the sole international distributor for the animated films created by Studio Ghibli. These films were dubbed depending on the region and then released accordingly. Both Disney and Ghibli are the industry giants, and their collaboration was in fact one of the biggest deals in history.
However, the intriguing aspect of this collaboration is that popular actor and filmmaker Kevin Costner was a crucial part of it. In fact, he was the one who introduced Michael Ovitz, the then president of Disney,...
