Wow. Just a month in and this regular post dedicated to the - shall we say - more idiosyncratic, less delicate of movies (or shall we just say “gory horrors and not-quite-b-movies”) has the splendid fortune of getting to review Stuart Gordon’s tongue-in-cheek classic, Re-Animator.

Produced by Brian Yuzna, the warped individual behind the brutal class satire/mutant cannibalism jaunt Society, and starring that rubber-faced icon of the midnight movie, Jeffrey Combs, this remains one of the crowning glories of 80s cult film-making. Re-Animator's essentially an outlandish, sillier take on Hp Lovecraft’s spin on the Frankenstein mad-scientist story, and Combs, who you’ll undoubtedly know from such box-office juggernauts as Doctor Mordrid and Cellar Dweller (reviewed here next month), plays brilliant-if-misguided medical student Herbert West.

Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College, C.H.U.D. II: Bud the Chud, 976-evil 2, Class of 1999, and The Unholy are all hitting DVD for the first time in a new Horror 8-Movie Pack along with Slaughter High, Chopping Mall and the R-Rated cut of Waxwork, which will also be seen on DVD for the first time. Those lines may fill you with excitement at the prospect of new adventures in J.K. Rowling's wizarding world of Hogwarts, Quidditch and magic owls, but unfortunately they are not from a forthcoming novel. In fact, those words come from a trailer to a 25-year-old B-movie.

Yes, boys and girls, the original 1986 "Troll" had a character named Harry Potter who travels into a secret magical world, except this one was filled with midgets in disgusting troll makeup and sets about as lifelike as a Summer Stock Dinner Theater. Genre actor Kevin McCarthy died on Sat at the age of 96. Known by many as the hero from the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1956), McCarthy had a lengthy career spanning more than 70 years. We've seen him in everything from Tales from the Crypt and Joe Dante's The Howling and Piranha (1978) to the less than memorable Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College. For years McCarthy was a staple of the genre convention circuit, greeting fans and signing autographs. Even with his limited mobility while confined to a wheel chair we just saw McCarthy at Monsterpalooza earlier this year in Los Angeles where (as always) he seemed genuinely thrilled to meet and greet all who adored him.  He will be missed.

Poor Joey Crusel is just another teen that wants to get laid, but unfortunately for him, Freddy Krueger refuses to leave his wet dreams alone. Playboy Playmate Hope Marie Carlton replaces Stacey Alden as Krueger's sexy bait, that turns out to be fatal for the Dream Warrior's survivor in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master. Carlton went on to appear nude in the films Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College, Slumber Party Massacre III and two episodes of the show Hotel Erotica before disappearing.
