Most of the rescue personnel seen in the film were real firefighters and paramedics from the Dallas-Fort Worth area. Some of them had taken part in the rescue efforts following the actual crash on August 2, 1985, and were in effect portraying themselves.
The lead character, Bob Sonnamaker, was based on one of the crew members of the production.

The presentation of "Fire and Rain" was followed by a half-hour round-table discussion among catastrophe survivors. The discussion is entitled "Fire and Rain: The Emotional Impact."
