An adorable black cat with luminous amber eyes fends for itself in “Flow,” snatching a fish from a pack of distracted mutts and dashing off with its loot while the dogs chase just a few seconds behind. Visionary animator Gints Zilbalodis’ virtual camera swoops after the cat, revealing a crisp, computer-generated world where humans are oddly absent, but their influence can be acutely felt.
Perhaps that explains what happens next, as a near-biblical flood of water — which may well be the result of human-made climate change, though Zilbalodis never specifies — brings a herd of wild animals stampeding in its direction. The cat’s ears flatten, and it crouches low to the ground, much like the Lion King did in that film’s iconic wildebeest scene, as a giant wave comes thundering after the deer. Seconds later, the forest is underwater, and the cat is desperately trying to stay afloat.

Godzilla Minus One, now at $14.36 million at the box office, has stomped into a record — it’s now the highest grossing live-action Japanese film in North America. This follows an opening weekend that marked the biggest Stateside debut of a foreign film this year.
Distributor Toho International said it’s been adding screens this week due to marketplace demand. It will be playing the film by Takashi Yamazaki in 2,540 locations.
Godzilla Minus One made over $11.4 million at its North America opening, beating Godzilla 2000: Millennium ($10 million) and current title-holder The Adventures of Milo & Otis (a comedy adventure with orange tabby cat Milo and pug Otis), which grossed $14.1 million in 1989 and a 1990 re-release.
It’s certified fresh on Rotten Tomatoes at 97% with critics (read Deadline’s review here) and 98% with audiences.
The biggest foreign opening this year was Demon Slayer: Kimetsu No Yaiba, which opened to $10.1 million in March.

In the spirit of The Secret Life of Pets, Homeward Bound, Cats & Dogs, Milo & Otis, and Mr. Peabody & Sherman; a new talking dog movie has been gifted to us, but unlike those squeaky-clean movies meant for families, Strays has a lot more of an edge. Similar to how Ted, Sausage Party, The Happytime Murders, and Good Boys took particular concepts that are traditionally seen as kid-friendly and morphed them into raunchy R-rated comedies, this new comedy looks to follow in those films' footsteps, but of course, it's much cuter.

If you've ever seen a movie from homage extraordinaire Quentin Tarantino, then you're probably aware that excess is a crucial part of his DNA. The filmmaker behind "Pulp Fiction" and "Once Upon a Time in Hollywood" is a man for which the word "restraint" is unlikely in his lexicon. For better or worse, when Tarantino wants to shock you, he'll find a way to make you flinch. It's been that way ever since his "Reservoir Dogs" days.
When Tarantino unleashes his signature wave of violence, he sure opens the floodgates. In his movies, people don't get shot, they pop like a bloody balloon as if it were sent directly from Pennywise himself. The over-the-top violence featured in his films make sense considering how much he reveres exploitation cinema. It's difficult to imagine anything that would make him flinch, but there's one aspect of filmmaking he finds particularly reprehensible.

Part of our on-going series, Notebook Soundtrack Mixes.Ryuichi Sakamoto can be found at home in a vast array of places. There is always a grounding within his music wherever you are in the world or, in his movie soundtracks, with whatever character you are following on screen. Subtle hints of Sakamoto’s signature sound always bubble to the surface. The notion of Eastern and Western sound distinctions do not matter to Sakamoto; instead, the play and fusion between these differing worlds and sounds has always been of more interest, to Sakamoto it’s all about the emotion produced—a universality that eventually moves the sound beyond place. The musician and composer needs no introduction. He is the master of so many musical universes: The Sakamoto whose work with Ymo and solo experimental productions shaped the future sounds of what would become electro and hip hop, an early pioneer of electronic music.

People are getting excited because Nintendo Switch is releasing a port of Link’s Awakening—an RPG that originally came out on the Gameboy two decades ago. More than a port, it’s an actual remake wherein everything is more or less the same with improved graphics and tweaks in gameplay wherever the developers see fit (surely in concert with what the new system can handle that the old couldn’t). That excitement is justified because they’re breathing new life into a classic game we can no longer play unless still in possession of an obsolete system. As such, the idea of doing something similar to The Lion King within its own medium should earn its share of buzz too. It often behooves advancing technology to introduce its updates via familiarity.

I’m not sure if you heard, but there was a minor announcement made recently that Jamie Lee Curtis will be reprising her role as Laurie Strode in Blumhouse’s upcoming installment to the Halloween franchise. While the majority of the response has been positive, there have been some concerns, such as the need to once again retcon the series to resurrect Laurie Strode as well as the usual skepticism about the need for another Halloween movie. While I understand these concerns, I do have a retort: they’re bringing back Jamie Lee freaking Curtis.
This woman is the highlight of anything she’s in, be it one of her many turns in horror flicks, starring roles in big-budget action movies like True Lies, or even just a guest spot on New Girl. I’d slap down ten bucks to watch this woman fold laundry. And I have to say,...

When endeavouring to tell live action stories from the perspective of animals, film-makers generally choose between three approaches. They can follow their subjects from a documentary-esque perspective (like director Jean-Jacques Annaud’s astonishing nature-drama The Bear), assign them voices and make their mouths move (Babe) or provide narration articulating their thoughts and feelings (The Adventures of Milo and Otis).

Usually June is associated with the first real month of summer -- a time to go out and frolic through the wilderness like a snowman that doesn't know any better. But it also gets really, really hot, which has people retreating to their local multiplex or, even better, their luxuriously air-conditioned living rooms. With that in mind, take a look at the television shows and movies that will be available on Netflix's steaming service come June (via Vulture).
Thought the snail-who-dreamed-of-being-a-racecar saga ended with last summer's DreamWorks Animated joint "Turbo?" Think again. Apparently there's a television spin-off. And you can watch it on Netflix. We also have to give it up for a pair of wonderful sequels that are going to be on in June: the obviously-shot-in-Canada-even-though-it's-set-in-New York robo-epic "Short Circuit 2" (a favorite since childhood) and the far darker and more sinister "Wolf Creek 2," a sequel to the...

This Sunday’s broadcast of the Academy Awards promises to be one of the lowest-rated in quite some time. The public-at-large doesn’t seem to give a hoot whether or not The Artist topples The Descendents for Best Picture, so long as Uggie is able to overcome his mystery shaking disease and walks the red carpet in full, resplendent glory (while, at the same time, sniffing as many crotches as he damn well pleases). All of which got us thinking: Human actors and actresses are just plain Boring when compared to their canine counterparts. So, as a means of celebrating the many silver screen triumphs over the years of our four-legged friends, we here at Best Week Ever decided to create The Wag Awards as a means of celebrating the artistic achievements of man’s best friend. Dog lovers extraordinaire (and VH1 video editing maestros) Tami Foy, Joe Maziarski and...

Well, this was inevitable. Watch The Throne, the collaboration between Kanye West and Jay-z, is a pretty big deal, and the first single off the album, “Otis,” is excellent. The song samples Otis Redding, which is very cool, as is the video. Real good stuff, that video. But do you remember the movie The Adventures Of Milo And Otis, about the dog and the cat? Yes, it’s a movie about a dog and a cat, and yet it’s so much better than that. Perfect timing, then, that somebody recut the song to scenes from that very same movie, particularly with focus on Otis the pug.

If there’s one iron-clad rule in marketing, movies or otherwise, it’s “Sex Sells.” If there is another ironer-cladder rule in marketing, it’s “People Notice Boobs.” Or to take the advice one step further, “Boobs boobs boobs.” You are now all licensed postermakers. The new sideboob poster for Sarah Michelle Gellar’s show Ringer got me thinking (first about boobs and then) “What are the all-time most blatant uses of boobs in posters?” From posters entirely centered around the lead actresses’ cleavage to subtler posters that still go out of their way to make sure those boobs are clearly noticeable, here’s a list of The 30 Most Blatant Uses Of Boobs In Movie Posters: 1. Cruel Intentions 2. Romance And Cigarettes 3. L.A. Confidential 4. I Know What You Did Last Summer 5. I Still Know What You Did Last Summer 6. Bandidas 7. Step Up 8. Step Up 2 9. Blue Crush 10.
