Short Film Review: Blades (2023) by Jung Jae-yong
Image
Shamanism is a concept deeply engraved in Korean culture, and local cinema has been drawing inspiration from it almost since its beginnings, with a number of movies featuring impressive depictions of rituals. Jung Jae-yong directs a 29-minute short based on the concept, this time taking it a step further by adding an intriguing twist that crosses into family drama.

Blades is screening at Busan International Short Film Festival (Bissf)

Ehwa, a famous shaman, is about to perform a shin-naerim ritual for Jiwon, a young woman destined to become her spiritual successor, after being saved by her mentor when she previously suffered from God-disease. Ehwa also has to take care of her disabled son, Kidong, now past the typical marrying age, who, as the ritual is about to begin, finds himself grappling with awakening suppressed sexual urges. The two parallel narratives, frequently switching into Kidong’s thoughts, cross constantly, while the...

The Star of the Best ‘Jaws’ Parody Ever Was a Killer Lawnmower
Image
In 1975, Steven Spielberg directed Jaws, giving Hollywood its first blockbuster and changing how movies were released. For a time, Jaws was the box office king that was part horror movie, part action film, and, with its PG rating, a popular go-to for families as well as kids who were just starting to dip their toes into the water of horror. Jaws completely took over pop culture and was copied everywhere, from the Land Shark skits on SNL, to a plethora of clones, and even its own bad sequels. Jaws has also been parodied relentlessly over the decades with so many bad sharksploitation films, but the best Jaws parody of all doesn't have a Great White shark, a snake, an alligator, or any other type of animal. In Blades, a local golf course is being stalked by a murderous, possessed lawnmower, and it's hilarious.

Kevin Feige Shares The Most Positive Update Blade Fans Could Hope For
Image
After years of staying in development hell, getting multiple updates and delays in its reboot journey, Blade has finally received an encouraging update from Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, and fans will be more than thrilled to hear it. Although the timeline for its release is still uncertain, Feiges recent comments suggest that the project is very much alive and on track. In an exclusive interview with Omelete, he confirmed that Marvel is committed to the Blade reboot and expressed his enthusiasm for Mahershala Alis portrayal of the iconic vampire hunter.

The affirmation has clearly reignited hope for Blades future in the MCU and is a welcome relief for fans who have been awaiting news on the projects status.

We're committed to Blade. We love the character, we love Mahershala's version of him. And rest assured, whenever we change direction with a project, or are still trying to figure out...

Stephen Dorff Made His Film Debut in This 80s Demonic Horror Movie
Image
Plenty of big-named actors got their start in horror, from Jennifer Aniston in Leprechaun to Kevin Bacon in Friday the 13th. A smaller number can claim a start in horror as a child, but that is just the case for Blades Stephen Dorff. Before he was the villainous vampire Deacon Frost, he was the demon-beset 12-year-old Glen in 1987s The Gate. Tibor Takcs PG-13 horror took cues from other lighter, scary classics like Gremlins and Critters, with the final product easing away from screenwriter Michael Nankins grittier first draft. That darker spirit remains, to a lesser extent, giving The Gate a grittier edge than other family horror movies, and making it a cult-classic demon flick, too.

Im Convinced That Wesley Snipes Will Play Blade Again Before Mahershala Ali Joins The MCU
Image
I believe there is a big chance we will see Wesley Snipes play Blade again before Mahershala Ali's Marvel Cinematic Universe movie finally arrives. Snipes is one of the main actors responsible for live-action superhero movies taking off the way they did, eventually leading to the creation of the MCU. From 1998 to 2004, Snipes starred in the Blade movie trilogy, making the Daywalker known to non-comic book readers. The vampire hunter quickly became a popular character, and even though Snipes' last Blade film, 2004's Blade: Trinity, had its fair share of issues, fans continued to ask for his return.

That finally happened in the MCU of all places, with Snipes playing Blade in Deadpool & Wolverine. I enjoyed the actor's return as his iconic Marvel character, and I'm convinced that we have not seen the last of Snipes as Blade. In fact, I think there is a huge chance that Mahershala...

McU's Blade Replaced by Predator: Badlands in Disney Schedule Shake-up
Image
The woes of the MCUs iteration of Blade continue as the troubled movie has been once again removed from Disneys slate of upcoming releases. Having been planned for a November 2025 release, that spot has now been taken over by Dan Trachtenbergs next Predator movie, leaving Mahershala Alis Blade debut in limbo once again.

While this seems like just another blow for fans that have been awaiting the arrival of the new Daywalker for five years and counting, there seems to be a good reason behind the delays that may make the film well worth the extended wait. Kevin Feige previously stated that the most important thing was to get Blade right, and make the best film possible. Having taken quite a beating over the content that seemed to be rushed out in 2021 and 2022, it has become clear that the future of the franchise is all about quality over quantity, and...

We Don’t Know Much, But We’re Certain God of War’s Next Game Will Have Kratos Wielding One Weapon
Image
God of War is one of the more notable first-party franchises under the PlayStation Studios banner and the gaming community is eager to see where the Ghost of Sparta will go next. Kratos is a killing machine built for war and anything in his hands is a deadly weapon, however; some are deadlier than most.

The retired god had an impressive loadout throughout his career. The original trilogy painted him as a bloodthirsty monster as he slaughtered en masse and without remorse which will forever haunt him as he lives out the rest of his days with one powerful reminder.

God of War Fans Are Convinced One Iconic Weapon Will Make a Return in the Next Sequel

Santa Monica Studio spent the last few years crafting the perfect redemption arc for a video game character and it resonated well with the gaming community. The fans were curious as to what...

'Blade's Opening Scene Remains a Bloody Great Introduction
Image
After being noticeably absent from Marvel Studios San Diego Comic Con panel, the status of the new Blade film starring Academy Award winner Mahershala Ali remains uncertain as the entire franchise shifts course in dramatic fashion. Marvel Studios lack of confidence and confounding inability to execute a plan to bring back one of the first characters that put them on the big-screen map is particularly odd considering Blades relative simplicity, not to mention the absolute jackpot theyve hit having Ali attached. Blades underwhelming inclusion in Deadpool & Wolverine will only briefly satiate fans of the character and likely will only remind them of the new films bizarre status in pre-production purgatory. With the characters future in question, there has never been a better time to revisit the opening scene of Blade, directed by Steve Norrington and written by David S. Goyer, and explore how Wesley Snipes' iconic introduction as the...

McU's Newest Release Plan Changes Make Its Riskiest Movies & Shows An Even Bigger Gamble
Image
The McU's slowed release schedule values quality over quantity to prevent mediocrity. Marvel's Blade reboot faces production struggles, which may lead to fans losing patience with minimal updates. Risky MCU projects could suffer from the reduced release plan's higher stakes.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe has been slowing down its release slate for a good reason, but the new pacing brings its own risks. After Phases 4 and 5 garnered mixed reviews, Marvel Studios announced they would be scaling back on their MCU release schedule. The studio is now opting to focus on quality over quantity, a decision that has been generally well-received after audiences have become fatigued with the number of mediocre MCU movie and TV releases. However, the cons of the MCUs newest release plan are starting to come to light.

The MCUs Blade reboot has lost its director for the second time since the project was announced five years ago,...

MCU Blade Reboot's Woes Continue With Latest Production Setback
Image
Blade's latest setback with director departure adds more drama to the long and problematic production journey within the MCU. Marvel Studios being deliberate in searching for a new director may indicate a shift towards quality over quantity for upcoming projects. Despite delays and challenges faced, Blade remains in development with star Mahershala Ali still attached to the project.

Marvel Studios Blade reboot is searching for its third director following the departure of Yann Demange from the Mahershala Ali movie. Following in the footsteps of original director Bassam Tariq, who left the project in 2022, Demange has now amicably joined a growing list of directors who have been unable to see through the new project.

The journey to bring Blade into the MCU decades after Wesley Snipes delivered his hit movies has so far been a long and fruitless one, marred by several big challenges, including almost losing its lead star.

An MCU Stars New Vampire Movie Sets Up A Problem For Marvel's Blade Reboot
Image
Blade's debut in the MCU faces challenges due to delays and changes in production. Ryan Coogler's vampire movie could outshine Blade by creating a unique comparison. Coogler's film may overshadow Blade, as the former already has an advantage in development.

The Marvel Cinematic Universe still has a couple more movies to go as part of its Multiverse Saga, including its long-awaited Blade reboot but a vampire movie from an MCU star is setting up a problem for it. The Multiverse Saga has brought a wider variety of characters as part of the expansion of the MCU, while also continuing the stories of already established characters. Among the most awaited characters joining the MCU in the upcoming Phase 6 is Blade, with Mahershala Ali playing the famous dhampir.

Blades MCU debut was announced in the summer of 2019, along with Alis casting, but the project has undergone many changes and delays since then.

Cyberpunk 2077 Fan Figures Out Why Players Can't Wear Long Sleeve Shirts
Image
CD Projekt Red may have purposely designed Cyberpunk 2077 to not allow long-sleeved shirts to accommodate the Mantis Blades combat augment. Players speculate that long sleeves and gloves were omitted to prevent clipping issues with the forearms when using the Mantis Blades. The decision to prioritize Mantis Blades over long sleeves demonstrates a design choice for immersion and gameplay mechanics in Night City.

An observant Cyberpunk 2077 may have just figured out why CD Projekt Red doesn't allow players' characters to wear long-sleeved shirts while walking around Night City. While it may have initially been assumed a bug, Cyberpunk 2007 has never allowed V to properly wear a shirt with sleeves that cover their forearms, automatically rolling them up whenever the inventory screen is exited. The community has long believed this to be a glitch since looking at their characters in the game's menus shows them with their arms covered, suggesting it was...

Even Wolverine's Claws Can't Cut 1 Darkly Powerful Marvel Metal
Image
Wolverine's claws may be sharp, but adamantium is no match for hellfire-forged metals. Logan's vulnerability to hellish materials is highlighted in X-Force #13, showcasing a weakness against mystical weapons. Despite being the best at what he does, Wolverine's adamantium claws are ineffective against the occult in Marvel's universe.

In Marvel Comics, the adamantium claws of Wolverine are known to cut through practically any substance they come across. For this and many other reasons, Logan is often referred to as "the best there is at what he does." Unfortunately, while Wolverine might be the Best There Is, the same can’t be said for adamantium, which is surprisingly ineffective against one unexpected Marvel metal.

X-Force #13 by Benjamin Percy, Viktor Bogdanovic, Matthew Wilson, and Joe Caramagna finds the titular team’s clawed berserker trapped in Hell alongside a mutant warrior named Solemn. The two mutants are both searching for Muramasa Blades, ancient swords with mystical properties.

New Elder Scrolls Game Is Coming, But It's Not The One You Want
Image
The Elder Scrolls series is getting a new game, but it won't be The Elder Scrolls 6. The franchise has released spinoff titles like The Elder Scrolls Online, Legends, and Blades. The latest addition to the franchise may upset franchise fans who are eagerly awaiting a true successor to Skyrim.

The Elder Scrolls series is actually getting a new game in the near future, but it doesn't look like it will have much of anything to do with the hotly anticipated The Elder Scrolls 6. The last mainline entry in the franchise was 2011's The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim, which has essentially become the face of the series since, with an incredibly active modding community and regular ports to new platforms that have generated many jokes and even more sales. The Elder Scrolls 6 was teased with a short trailer in 2018, but there's still no sign of anything more.

That being said, the...

From Elder Scrolls to Starfield: Every Bethesda RPG Ranked Worst to Best
Image
For nearly 30 years, Bethesda has been pushing the limits of the RPG genre. Though Bethesda has developed and produced a number of great games across numerous genres, their name will always be synonymous with titles like The Elder Scrolls and Fallout. Now that the studio has unleashed its latest RPG epic, Starfield, on the world, we thought this would be the perfect time to take a look back at the company’s history of blockbuster RPG experiences and try to determine which is the very best.

Before we dive into that, though, here are a few rules and pieces of selection criteria I used to assemble this list:

– This list largely focuses on RPGs developed by Bethesda (Bethesda Softworks/Bethesda Game Studios) rather than RPGs published by Bethesda. While that represents the bulk of the studio’s RPG output, titles like Pirates of the Caribbean and pseudo-RPGs like Dishonored, Prey,...

Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty’s Cyberware Rework Is A Total Game-Changer
Image
Cyberpunk 2077's cyberware system will be completely overhauled in the Phantom Liberty Dlc, and the changes have the potential to make the experience feel brand-new. In the base game, cybernetic upgrades already give the dystopian RPG a different feel from other first-person titles, allowing V to augment their body with technological implants - which can imbue them with extra firepower, better stats, and special abilities. Thanks to Phantom Liberty's cyberware rework, though, players will get to enjoy an even more engaging system that aims to shake the game up further.

Of course, an updated cyberware system isn't the only new content coming to the upcoming Dlc. Cyberpunk 2077 Phantom Liberty will expand greatly on V's story, bringing them to a brand-new district named Dogtown with a noble mission to save Nusa's President, Rosalind Myers. Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as the iconic Johnny Silverhand, and even English actor Idris Elba...

Arlo Parks Drops New Album My Soft Machine: Stream

In a statement, the London-based singer-songwriter revealed the inspiration behind her sophomore LP as well as its title, which she lifted from the 2019 Joanna Hogg film, The Souvenir. “The world/our view of it is peppered by the biggest things we experience — our traumas, upbringing, vulnerabilities almost like visual snow,” she shared. “This record is life through my lens, through my body — the mid-20s anxiety, the substance abuse of friends around me, the viscera of being in love for the first time, navigating P.T.S.D. and grief and self-sabotage and joy, moving through worlds with wonder and sensitivity — what it’s like to be trapped in this particular body.”

Fear the Walking Dead's Time Jump Is Both Beneficial and Detrimental
Image
The following contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 8, Episode 1, "Remember What They Took From You," which premiered Sunday, May 14, on AMC.

When Season 9 of The Walking Dead aired back in 2018, there was little hope the series would revisit glory. The series had been hit by surprisingly mundane seventh and eighth seasons that killed viewership numbers significantly. But The Walking Dead found its footing again with a six-year time jump in Season 9. Now that its spinoff series faced a similar gruesome fate in its later seasons, it only makes sense that Fear the Walking Dead pulls out a time jump as well.

It may seem unfair to compare the flagship series and Fear the Walking Dead as the latter show has exhausted all measures to set it apart from the original. For what it's worth, it certainly has in good and bad ways. But Fear the Walking Dead is at its lowest,...

Arlo Parks Shares New Single “Pegasus” with Phoebe Bridgers: Stream
Image
Arlo Parks has released the new single “Pegasus,” a collaboration with Phoebe Bridgers. It’s the fourth track to come off the London singer-songwriter’s upcoming sophomore album My Soft Machine.

On “Pegasus,” Parks and Bridgers cooly harmonize during the chorus, with Parks delicately declaring statements of love and joy during the verses. Its hazy, ethereal nature fits the desert setting of its accompanying music video, which in itself was inspired by films like Gerry, My Own Private Idaho, and Paris, Texas.

“‘Pegasus’ is about experiencing the warmth and lightness of good love for the first time,” Parks shared in a press release. “It also explores how the absence of chaos and the presence of real connection can be a little bit terrifying after a long time of not having it.” Listen to the song below.

Arlo Parks Shares Groovy New Song “Blades”: Stream
Image
Arlo Parks has previewed her upcoming album, My Soft Machine, with the groovy new song “Blades.” Listen to the single below.

As Parks shared in a statement, “I wanted to make something that I can dance to, finally, because I feel like my songs don’t really have that quality in general. So, I took inspiration from bands like Esg, artists like Kaytranada, and a lot of the kind of 70s Zambian psychedelic rock that I love.”

“Blades” does the artist’s desires justice. Chilled out but melodic, the single combines slinky guitar, syncopated synths, and a singalong chorus, inspiring you to dance — even if Parks is singing about a fractured friendship.

“I imagine this moment at a party where you see someone across the room that you haven’t seen in a while, you felt yourself growing apart, and you’re like, should I, should I not?” Parks said.

Long Live Physical Media: 5 Labels Every Horror Fan Should Know
Image
Right now is an excellent time to be a fan of the horror genre and collector of physical media, as there are so many incredible companies doing great work in the space.

Here are five labels every horror fan should be aware of…

Vinegar Syndrome

If you have a deep interest in film preservation and film archives, you may already know the term “vinegar syndrome” which refers to the chemical process that causes a breakdown of film reels over time. These reels smell strongly like vinegar, hence the name.

Vinegar Syndrome the label was founded in 2012 with the goal to preserve and restore films from the 1960s through the 1980s. Preservation has always been top of mind with Vinegar Syndrome. Still, because of their fantastic preservation and restoration work, we also get some of the best DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K releases on the market from their archive.

Why God Of War Ragnarok’s Draupnir Spear Is So Perfect
Image
While the epic sequel brings back the Blades of Chaos and Leviathan Axe, the perfect weapon available to Kratos in God of War Ragnarok is actually the Draupnir Spear. The latest entry in the mythological action saga sees Kratos battle the Aesir gods with the help of gameplay innovations that make him more nimble and versatile than ever. The Blades of Chaos and Leviathan Axe receive powerful new moves to help Kratos face down Thor, Odin and their kin, but the Draupnir Spear perfectly rounds out God of War Ragnarok's iconic arsenal.

God of War Ragnarok brings back Kratos' iconic Leviathan Axe and Blades of Chaos, which were both present in 2018's God of War, and makes them even more valuable in combat. The Blades of Chaos grant players enhanced mobility by letting them grapple and swing around the Nine Realms, and the Ghost of Sparta's iconic chained blades can...
