Why Field Of Dreams Made James Earl Jones Break Down In Tears
Image
For over 50 years, the late James Earl Jones' name in the credits of a film was reason enough to devote a couple of hours to a movie. Was it always a satisfying two hours? As someone who sat through "Allan Quatermain and the Lost City of Gold," "Three Fugitives," and "Soul Man," I can confidently say no.

This is more than fine. Jones was a working actor who took the "work" part seriously. As he told journalist Joe Leydon in 1989, "This is my profession. I do need to make a living at it, because I can't make a living any other way." So, when you're not getting offered, say, "The Great White Hope" every time out, you roll up your sleeves and do some time on the sets of "Blood Tide," "Best of the Best," and "Excessive Force" with no apologies. Those paychecks keep you afloat while you wait for...

What Happened To Nichole Brown's Aisha Robinson On Cobra Kai?
Image
"Cobra Kai" is a show with an absolutely massive ensemble cast. Sure, there are a few key characters that the Netflix series follows quite religiously -- mainly "The Karate Kid" holdovers Daniel Larusso (Ralph Macchio) and Johnny Lawrence (William Zabka), as well as various close associates, family members, and sworn enemies that trickle in over time. However, as new kids join the assorted dojos and old characters from the franchise return, there are soon dozens of named characters crane kicking each other around the San Fernando Valley.

With so many people in the mix, it's only natural for the occasional combatant to drop entirely out of the picture. Take Aisha Robinson (Nichole Brown), who's a "Cobra Kai" mainstay for the show's early episodes, but moves out of the neighborhood after the big school fight near the end of the sophomore season. As major "Cobra Kai" character Samantha Larusso's (Mary Mouser) best friend,...

Veteran Actress Sally Kirkland Facing Health Crisis After Life-Threatening Illnesses, Bone Fractures
Image
Friends of Sally Kirkland are rallying around the actress as she faces an “urgent need” of assistance following a series of health scares including two “life-threatening infections” and fractures in her neck, wrist and hip. Kirkland now requires a level of medical care beyond what she can afford, and those friends have launched a GoFundMe fundraiser to help the 83-year-old with expenses.

The fundraiser, which went live on Monday, details Kirkland’s health crisis and claims that her situation has been exacerbated by controversial changes made to SAG-AFTRA’s health plan for senior guild members and the 2007 market crash that claimed the “bulk of her investments” and the money she earned during the peak years of her career.

“This past year Sally fractured her four bones in her neck, right wrist and her left hip. While recovering she developed two separate life-threatening infections,” states the GoFundMe, which has a goal...

Image
Peter E. Strauss, the film executive behind projects such as “The Jacket” and “Air,” died Oct. 6 at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 83.

Strauss held a number of roles over the course of his five-decade career, including most recently, executive vice president of Mandalay Pictures and previously president of Lions Gate Entertainment. At Mandalay, he oversaw the financing and distribution for film and television titles. Strauss is credited with contributing to the growth of independent cinema through his involvement in foreign sales and off-balance-sheet financing for independent films.

Strauss joined Lionsgate in 1998, overseeing U.S. operations for the company. During his time there, Lionsgate evolved its independent film production and distribution. Prior to this role, Strauss had worked at International Movie Group, where he produced and executive produced over 30 films as president, CEO and chairman, including the “Best of the Best” series, “Buster” with Phil Collins, and “Cadence” starring...

Cobra Kai Explains What Happened To A Forgotten Character
Image
Aisha Robinson's absence in Cobra Kai season 3 was explained by her moving to a new school following the school brawl in season 2. Sam mentions in season 6 that Aisha was accepted to the University of California, Santa Cruz, showing her character's progress. Fans speculate that Aisha may make a return in the final episodes of season 6, possibly in the upcoming Sekai Taikai tournament.

Cobra Kai slowly forgot about Aisha Robinson, but season 6 has subtly revealed what has happened to her since she left. There are dozens of characters in Cobra Kai, and it seemed for a time that new ones were coming in from all directions. This made it difficult to keep track of everyone's stories, and, as a result, Aisha fell to the wayside. Actor Nicole Brown didn't return to the Netflix series in season 3, which was a significant disappointment since Aisha was a well-loved original character. However, she...

Best of the Best 2: The Best Movie You Never Saw!
Image
In 1989, the movie Best of the Best had a somewhat abbreviated run in theaters. Only grossing a mere $1.7 million, the movie was a major hit on home video and cable. That’s why, three years later, a sequel, Best of the Best 2, hit theaters… for a while. While the first film has maintained a certain cult status, the sequel, and the two more that followed, have been largely forgotten – until now on this edition of The Best Movie You Never Saw.

Best of the Best 2 came from the same creative team behind the original, including director Robert Radler and producer/ star Phillip Rhee. Intriguingly, it was co-written by a TV actor of the time named John Allen Nelson, who starred on Baywatch for a few seasons, played Paul The Wine Guy on Friends, and has shown up as a guest actor on most of the biggest shows on TV.

10 Martial Arts Movie Sequels Way Better Than The Original
Image
Several martial arts movie sequels have managed to greatly outdo their predecessors. Martial arts films are like any other genre, in that some of their stories are specifically designed to be one-offs, while others are the beginning of a franchise. The latter tends to be a fairly common scenario, and has often led to such popular martial arts movie franchises as The Karate Kid, Kickboxer, and the Ip Man movies.

There are also numerous examples of the second installment of a martial arts movie series completely surpassing the original. In some cases, it is simply the case of a superior sequel with bigger and better action scenes being made. In other cases, part two of a martial arts franchise even ends up being so good as to become regarded as the true beginning of its respective series. Here are 10 martial arts movie sequels that are significantly better than their predecessors.

The Best Of The Best – The Greatest Cinematographers and the Films that made them great
Author: Dave Roper

So, we come to the end of this particular series. We’ve covered a number of aspects of the creative input into film-making, including actors, actresses, writers composers, and directors (in two parts). We’ve stopped short of costume, make-up, special effects, art design and others, however our final stop is Cinematography. The Dop exerts plenty of influence over the look of the film. Yes, lighting, production design and the director’s vision are key too, but the consistency and persistence with which certain directors stick with and return to a trusted Dop shows just how much they contribute.

Darius Khondji – Seven

Seven has a unique visual aesthetic. Plenty of films have gone for the “always raining, always dark” approach, but contrast Seven with something like AvP: Requiem for a shining example of how hard it is to pull off effectively. And contrast is the word. Seven...

The Best Of The Best – The Greatest Composers And The Scores That Made Them Great
Author: Dave Roper

With Actors, Directors, Actresses and Screenwriters under our collective belt and Cinematographers still to come, we presently turn our eye towards Composers, whose music lends so much to the films they work on.

As with the other lists, credit is given for not merely one or two sterling scores, but rather a consistently excellent body of work with specific stand-out films. To be blunt, this is a trickier prospect than it at first appears. Just because a film is terrific or well-loved doesn’t necessarily mean that the score is itself a standout. We begin with perhaps the most obvious and celebrated film composer of them all…..

John Williams – Star Wars

Goodness me. The Poseidon Adventure, The Towering Inferno, Earthquake, Jaws, Raiders of the Lost Ark, The Long Goodbye, Catch Me If You Can, Star Wars, Close Encounters, Star Wars, Superman, Et, Born on the Fourth of July,...

The Best Of The Best -The Greatest Actresses and the roles that made them great
Author: Dave Roper

Actors, Writers, Directors, they all have their part to play and all have their echelons of excellence. For every Scorsese working at the top of their game, there’s a journeyman like Peter Berg and then a hack like McG (sorry to any McG fans out there). It’s all (obviously) much the same with the greatest actresses too – some consistently hit high notes, others work faithfully but perhaps unexceptionally and others struggle to ever escape derivative and low-brow work. Here are a few who fall squarely in the first group.

Susan Sarandon – Dead Man Walking

Susan Sarandon is often underappreciated and underrated for her versatility. Consider the contrast between her campaigning, gracious nun in Dead Man Walking, her feisty southerner in Thelma & Louise, her boo-hiss Queen in Enchanted, the comparative gentleness (but definitely not blandness) of her roles in Robot & Frank and Elizabethtown and the oomph...

The Best Of The Best – The Greatest Directors and the film which made them great Part 2
Author: Dave Roper

The Directors, The Auteurs, the Commanders of the Ship, Masters of All They Survey. This is the second of this two-part series on the greatest directors with more of cinematic luminaries under the spotlight. You can see the first part of this article here. You can catch up with the greatest writers, and the greatest actors here.

Here’s Part Two.

Howard Hawks – The Big Sleep

Hawks, like his peer Billy Wilder, proved a genre-hopping master. Like Wilder, he had his crime/noir masterpieces (Scarface, The Big Sleep) and his comedies (Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday). Hawks also did a strong line in westerns, with Red River and Rio Bravo the best known and best regarded of this latter-career focus of his. As with any director who covers a lot of thematic ground during their career, it can be difficult to choose a “Best”, as you...

The Best Of The Best – The Greatest Directors and the film which made them great Part 1
Author: Dave Roper

The Directors, The Auteurs, the Commanders of the Ship, Masters of All They Survey. Too much credit is undoubtedly given to them (film is as collaborative an artistic medium as any), but at the same time they still exert incomparable influence over the end product. We’ve recently looked at writers, with whom all films originate, then to the actors, and now we turn to the greatest directors and all they do to hold the infernal enterprise together.

We can only speculate on what might have been, had Charles Laughton followed up on the unbelievable promise of his debut Night of the Hunter. But he never directed again and so is regrettably out of the running. But hopefully there remains a little something for everyone below and of course the intention is to stimulate debate so by all means add a comment for any glaring omissions.

Steven Spielberg...

The Best Of The Best – The Greatest Writers and the scripts that made them great
Author: Dave Roper

Having scoured the ranks of actors to draw up a shortlist of the best of them and then a selection of their best work, we now move on to consider the best work by the greatest writers. This can be a harder thing to judge, given that there will often be a team of writers, or polishing work is done on a script that is otherwise someone else’s work. Quentin Tarantino did some polishing on Crimson Tide, but by contrast his script for Natural Born Killers is much less distinctively his, bearing as it does a lot of Oliver Stone’s fingerprints. What we will (try to) focus on are those writers who rather than being hacks for hire have instead crafted something all their own and seen it transition relatively unmolested to the screen.

As with the Best of the Best of the Actors, we...

The Best Of The Best: The Greatest Movie Actors and the roles that made them great
Author: Dave Roper

The prospective candidates for admission to MiB were hand-picked because they were the best of the best of the best. That’s a lot of superlatives. Eric Roberts and Chris Penn were two of the more unlikely members of a Tae Kwon Do team that took on Korea in The Best of the Best and across pretty much every athletic and artistic theatre of endeavour you can think of, debate rages as to who is the best of the best. Today we look at the greatest movie actors.

This new series of articles is not intended to lay such arguments to rest. Instead it will hopefully prompt some discussion and (polite) debate as we consider, within certain film-making disciplines, who might be considered to be the best and what is their best work. Highly subjective, of course, but that is whence springs healthy debate. We’ll get to actresses,...

Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
Video: Nine Actors Whose Careers Got a Big Boost from Quentin Tarantino
Uma Thurman in Pulp Fiction (1994)
What jumps to mind when you hear the phrase "Quentin Tarantino movie"? Hyperviolence? A bunch of different B-movies pastiched into something new? A lot of dialogue with a lot of bad language? That one "F" word in particular? Any of those could be right, but there's another thing many of Tarantino's movies have in common: a big, meaty role for an actor who's maybe in need of a career boost. In the case of the Tarantino movie currently in theaters, The Hateful Eight, the role is that of Daisy Domergue, a wily, foul-mouthed criminal played by Jennifer Jason Leigh. Now Leigh hasn't been without work.

Disclaimer: these choices simply reflect My opinion. I'm not trying to state them as if this list is fact or anything like that ... 'cause it's not. Best Of The Best 10.) Hear ‘Darren and the Greasy Funk’ From Scharpling & Wurster’s Massive New Boxed Set
Tom Scharpling in Sex and Broadcasting (2014)
On May 12, the Numero Group label released the massive The Best of the Best Show, a collection of Wfmu comedy Tom Scharpling and Jon Wurster's prank calls. At 16 CDs and with more than 20 hours of material, one could probably add "All" to the collection's title and get away with it. Even at this size, the collection is something close to essential for fans of the duo's deadpan, often surreal comedy. "Darren and the Greasy Funk," which you can listen to below, is a prime example of what these guys do, and along with the track, we've got Scharpling and Wurster's own recollection of how the call came about. Enjoy!Tom Scharpling: Hi, Jon. The impetus for this call started with an Allen Toussaint show you went to in North Carolina, right? Jon Wurster: Yes. In August of 2007, I went to see New Orleans jazz legend Allen Toussaint...

The top 25 underappreciated films of 1989
From a crazy early Nic Cage role to a lesser-known film starring Robert De Niro, here's our pick of 25 underappreciated films from 1989...

Ah, 1989. The year the Berlin Wall came down and Yugoslavia won the Eurovision Song Contest. It was also a big year for film, with Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade topping the box office and Batman dominating the summer with its inescapable marketing blitz.

Outside the top 10 highest-grossing list, which included Back To The Future II, Dead Poets Society and Honey I Shrunk The Kids, 1989 also included a plethora of less commonly-appreciated films. Some were big in their native countries but only received a limited release in the Us and UK. Others were poorly received but have since been reassessed as cult items.

From comedies to thrillers, here's our pick of 25 underappreciated films from the end of the 80s...

The creative team behind the bro-mantic comedy Ktown Cowboys have debuted a teaser for their movie, which is expected to release in 2015. Based off of the web-series of the same name, this comedy is set in the unique subculture of Los Angeles' Koreatown. Donnie Yen In Kung Fu Jungle Teaser: Smile When You Say That
The English-language title only hints at the hard-hitting action in the first teaser for Kung Fu Jungle, starring Donnie Yen. Directed by Teddy Chen (Bodyguards and Assassins), and formerly known as, variously, Best of the Best, Last of the Best, and Kung Fu Killer, the upcoming release also stars Wang Baoqiang (Iceman). Via Film Combat Syndicate, here's the official synopsis: A vicious killer (Wang Baoqiang) is going round Hong Kong killing top martial arts exponents. When convicted killer and kung fu expert, Xia (Donnie Yen) hears of this, he offers to help the police catch the killer, in return for his freedom. However, the canny and lethal killer eludes them again and again. Although the latter has made it quite clear that Xia would be his ultimate challenge,...

“American Idol” Recap: Girls! Girls! Guhh!
If you’ve paid attention to my urgent, poetic recaps of American Idol, you know we’ve arrived at my favorite time of year: the live(-ish) semifinal where a couple dozen singers with edgy haircuts and/or edgy midriff-baring tops (or both, if you’re edgy-edgy Marrialle Sellars) beg you to dial things on their behalf. It’s the esteemed Top 30 round — or as I’ve long called it, The “How Can This Be The Best Of The Best When Everybody Was Forgettable, Nervous, and Named Something Stupid?” Round. My favorite.

But I didn’t count such a stupid gimmick creeping its way into the festivities. Though 15 women qualified to perform on Tuesday’s show, only 10 would be allowed on air thanks to a mysterious prescreening round where Harry Connick Jr, Jennifer Lopez, and Paul McCartney Disguised As Sheryl Crow In The “Soak Up the Sun” Video (a.k.

I, Frankenstein - Ron Balicki and Diana Lee Inosanto Talk Bringing Martial Arts to Movies
Ka-li (noun): 1) One of the manifestations and cult titles of the wife of Shiva and mother goddess Devi, especially in her malevolent role as a goddess of death and destruction, depicted as black, red-eyed, blood-stained, and wearing a necklace of skulls...

2) Eskrima, Arnis and Kali are umbrella terms for the traditional martial arts of the Philippines ("Filipino Martial Arts," or Fma) that emphasize weapon-based fighting with sticks, knives and other bladed weapons, and various improvised weapons.

It also includes hand-to-hand combat, joint locks, grappling and weapon disarming techniques.

More and more, martial arts action sequences are becoming integral to genre filmmaking. From the "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" series (1997) and Blade (1998) to The Hulk (2003) and Resident Evil: Apocalypse (2004), we’re seeing more and more cinematic heroes who are kickin’ ass. One commonality in all of the aforementioned films are the action choreographers/stunt people: Ron Balicki and Diana Lee Inosanto.

Charlie Chaplin slept here: hotels in Los Angeles and Palm Springs
Chaplin's fame is such that his name has been used to sell hotel beds across California, some with only tenuous claims. Here is a selection of the most credible, well-established options

Charlie Chaplin's La: a black and white odyssey

Los Angeles Athletic Club

Chaplin lived in this downtown Los Angeles club for long periods during his first decade in California. In his autobiography, he praised its sports facilities: an Olympic-sized pool, cycling studio, squash courts, billiards room, and an indoor running track all open to hotel guests – which are still exceptional today. The bedrooms are classic, comfortable and recently redecorated, and there are vintage images around the halls of some of the sports stars who have trained here. Nearby is Cole's, the oldest public house in La, opened in 1908, which serves "French dip" (meat) sandwiches with jus on the side and pickle spears.

Watch Women Fight Each Other In The Trailer For Throwback Gem Raze
While Quentin Tarentino may think Death Proof is his worst film, there.s no denying it jump-started the acting career of stuntwoman Zoë Bell, who seems to have reached her career potential in the above theatrical trailer for Josh C. Waller.s directorial debut, the woman vs. woman battle film Raze. Is it a twist on the old women-in-prison flicks, or maybe an estrogen-filled throwback to movies like Bloodsport and Best of the Best? Both? Neither? I have no idea. One thing.s for certain: this trailer, via Yahoo! Movies, looks like the best movie you could ever possibly hope to find on cable after drunkenly arriving home from a bar, needing something to watch while some kind of food is heated in the oven. It.s straight out of the 1980s, only with better effects and 30 years. worth of professional wrestling to pay attention to. No, this kind of...

Ryan Lambie Sep 13, 2016

Quietly released in 2009, suspense thriller The Steam Experiment may be Val Kilmer's strangest film yet. Ryan takes a closer look...

In a career spanning nearly 40 years, Val Kilmer's played Jim Morrison, Doc Holliday, Simon Templar and Batman. He was Iceman in Top Gun. He was Moses in The Prince Of Egypt, Elvis in True Romance, and the voice of Kitt in the 2008 Knightrider TV movie.

Val Kilmer's well known for these roles and many, many more - but one that somehow flew under our radar until now was that of mad global warming doomsday theorist James Pettis in the 2009 film, The Steam Experiment.

Billboard Music Awards 2013: Recognizing the Good, the Bad and The Biebs
Taylor Swift at an event for 2019 Golden Globe Awards (2019)
Going into the Billboard Music Awards, we know three things for sure, right? 1. Taylor Swift is going to be adorkable. (And you are going to hate that. You always do.) 2. At least half a dozen times, I’m going to have to ask Google to identify an act that, because I’m a nerd who’s well past puberty, I’ve never heard of. (How am I supposed to tell Macklemore from Ryan Lewis when I still struggle with telling Hall from Oates?) And 3. the whole massive recording industry back-slap will be followed by a TVLine Top 10 countdown of the ceremony’s best and worst.

Clone High Ep 1.04 ‘Film Fest: Tears of a Clone’ piles on the parodies in another fantastic episode
Clone High Episode 4 ‘Film Fest: Tears of a Clone’

Written by Erica Rivinoja

Aired 11/15/2002

For all of its wacky animation and pop culture references, Clone High is a very thought-out show, one which uses every single line of dialogue and inch of screen to maximum effect. A perfect example of this is ‘Film Fast’, which – like last week’s magnificent episode – manages to cram in a half-dozen different parodies in both obvious and subtle fashions, without ever losing sight of its overarching story and goals for the famous teenage clones.

But those fragments of story bookend the episode, which revolves around a film festival at Clone High, started to curb the violent rioting that began taking place after JFK won the cross country championships – though its fair to assume the N’Sync concert that was moved to the nurse’s office might’ve helped stir the shit a little bit.
