Captain N: The Game Master (1989)

FAQ

Captain N: The Game Master

FAQ

There were 3 seasons of Captain N.

The first season aired in the fall of 1989 on NBC, as a stand-alone show featured in the saturday morning cartoon lineup. 13 episodes aired in Season One.

The second season aired in the fall of 1990 on NBC, and was paired up with The Adventures of Super Mario Bros. 3, in an hour-long format. The Captain N segment was shown before and after a 15-minute Mario segment. 14 episodes aired in Season Two.

The third season aired in the fall of 1991 on NBC, and was paired up with The New Super Mario World. Only 7 new Captain N episodes aired, the remaining Mario segments were aired with edited versions of older Captain N episodes.

So total, there were 3 seasons and 34 unique episodes.

Yes. Shout! Factory, a studio that specializes in releasing classic television series on home video (and previously brought the Mario and Zelda cartoons to video) released two Captain N DVD sets in 2007.

The "Complete Series" box set features all 13 episodes from Season One and 13 episodes from Season Two. It does not include the Season Two episode When Mother Brain Rules, which was a clip show. It also does not include the third season.

The "Captain N and the New Super mario World" box set features the 7 remaining episodes of Captain N that aired as part of Season Three.

Note that the When Mother Brain Rules clip show episode and the edited-for-time versions of the episodes were not released on home video, and most likely will not be. The same goes for any other sort of "alternate version" of episodes.

Sort of. When the episodes originally aired on NBC, they featured remakes of popular songs of the day. These were replaced in syndication (and obviously, the home video releases) by a generic instrumental tune.

Additionally, the episode How's Bayou is featured as an early, rough workprint version that only aired on television once. The complete, "finished" version is not available on home video.

Also, Queen of the Apes has a glitch in which a few minutes of the episode are mysteriously missing. Shout! Factory has confirmed that this was a manufacturing error, and has started a program to replace defective discs.

Yes. Lana's father, King Charles, was voiced by Long John Baldry, a famed blues/rock musician best known for his involvement in the group Bluesology. He also voiced Dr. Robotnik in the Sonic the Hedgehog cartoons. Baldry died in 2005.

Additionally, Levi Stubbs from the Motown R&B quartet The Four Tops provided the voice of Mother Brain. Stubbs died in 2008.
