The 1989 Beetlejuice cartoon is a hidden gem from the Tim Burton canon. The aesthetic matches Tim Burton's eccentric, gothic style perfectly, while adapting it for a lighthearted children's audience. Even the series' voice actors for Lydia and Beetlejuice are the perfect cartoonish counterparts to Winona Ryder and Michael Keaton.

The Beetlejuice cartoon explores more of the Land of the Dead, though they call it the Neitherworld. The story retains iconic characters, like the sandworms and Delia Deetz, and introduces a bevy of new characters, like Prince Vince and Jacques Lalean. The series spans four seasons and has many memorable episodes worth replaying over and over.

Filmmaker Vincenzo Natali made a name for himself among genre fans with his debut feature Cube, making the transition from years of storyboard work on shows such as Beetlejuice and The Adventures of Tintin. Earlier this year, however, Natali made a move away from theatrical content, as his first feature since 2009′s Splice, titled Haunter, saw a release to On-Demand platforms concurrently with a limited run on the big screen. Now Natali has made a more concrete shift, with the tv series Darknet. Working with producer Steve Hoban, best known for Ginger Snaps, the first episode of the series has been released online ahead of the show’s premiere in January, and can be seen below.

I know what you’re thinking – another haunted house movie? And to that I say “Yes. Hush, there is a reason we’re on to a fifth Paranormal Activity movie.” Now here’s where Haunter is going to be different. Haunter is told from the ghosts’ perspective, and these spirits aren’t so keen on being dead. In fact, teenage Lisa (Abigail Breslin) and her entire family aren’t quite aware that they’re haunting their own house until it occurs to them that they’re reliving the same day over and over again. But once Lisa figures out that she was murdered, she reaches out to the teenage girl currently residing in her old room to stop her from suffering the same fate. I look forward to a new Vincenzo Natali movie like most movie geeks anticipate the next feature from Steven Spielberg or Martin Scorsese. Ever since I stumbled across his 1997 debut film Cube, which still stands up (despite its lesser sequels) as a very novel approach to cerebral horror or dark fantasy or violent sci-fi... I'm not exactly sure. From there he made Cypher (2002), Nothing (2003), and Splice (2009), all of which are A) cool, B) creepy, or C) a combination of cool and creepy.

So it was with much enthusiasm that I leapt into Mr. Natali's latest effort, the haunted house story known simply as Haunter.

Already I can hear what you're thinking: another haunted house movie? My response is a loud "yep!" because, hey, if we're going  to get endless permutations on the sub-genre (including everything Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and Sinister), we may as well shine a light on the most creative ones.

Post-Splice, director Vincenzo Natali has been attached to a few potential projects. They've all been literary adaptations, including Jg Ballard's High Rise, Roderick Gordon and Brian Williams' Tunnels series, and most excitingly, William Gibson's Neuromancer. Natalis has ticked the box marked "none of the above" for the time being though, since his immediate next film has just been announced as Haunter.Described as a "reverse ghost story", Haunter stems from an original screenplay by Brian King, who also wrote Natali's Cypher in 2002. It seems to have shades of The Others and Beetlejuice, in that it's told from the perspective of the haunter rather than the haunted: in this case a girl called Lisa who's been manifesting in the same house since she met an unfortunate end in 1986. If you remember, one of Neca's first ever line of figures was from Tim Burton's Beetlejuice - and they were Horrid.
