She gained fame as a “scream queen” over 40 years ago, but in the four decades since has proven her versatility in a range of genres. Award-winning activist, author and daughter of two film icons, Jamie Lee Curtis has built an impressive resume over several mediums. And 2022 was an especially wonderful year for her with an acclaimed performance in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” that brought her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.
Curtis was born in Santa Monica on November 22, 1958 to actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh. After finishing school, she briefly pursued an education in law, but decided to follow in her parents’ footsteps instead. In 1977, she was given a small role in an episode of “Quincy M.E.,” followed by several more small parts and a role in the short-lived “Operation Petticoat,” based on the film which had starred her father. Jamie Lee Curtis knows a thing or two about sticky situations. Like the one she found herself in when she’d agreed to star in an odd little series about a maple syrup heist gone comically awry, but then had to back out due to scheduling conflicts.
Nonplussed, she solved the problem herself. Convinced she knew who should replace her, she cold-called Margo Martindale — famed for her Emmy-winning turns on Justified and The Americans — and convinced her to step in as syrup farmer-turned-criminal mastermind Ruth Landry on Amazon Prime’s The Sticky. And when the producers called Curtis needing someone to play the hit man, she sold them on the idea of not just a gender swap, but also a pretty severe makeover for the battle-scarred Beau.
Here, Curtis tells Gold Derby about why she wanted to do a sitcom, how her Oscar and Emmy wins have changed her career...

John Peaslee, the writer and producer who worked alongside his longtime creative partner, Judd Pillot, on such sitcoms as Coach, Just Shoot Me!, According to Jim and Liv and Maddie, has died. He was 73.
Peaslee died Monday of natural causes at his home in Sherman Oaks, Pillot announced. The two had collaborated for 35 years.
“I will be forever thankful to the universe that I was with him for several hours that day, that I was able to hold his hand, recount all the stories — way too many to tell, but not nearly enough to fill the hole in my heart,” Pillot wrote on Instagram.
Peaslee and Pillot teamed on ABC’s Coach from 1989-93, on NBC’s Just Shoot Me! from 2002-03, on ABC’s According to Jim from 2005-09 and on Disney Channel’s Liv and Maddie from 2013-17.

Homicide: Life on the Street is streaming on Peacock, bringing joy to fans of its original ’90s run, fans of Andre Braugher, and those who will become fans after their first viewing.

Jamie Lee Curtis was a highlight of The Bear season 2 and the actress is opening up about her acclaimed turn in the hit show!
Curtis has been a notable Hollywood star since she was a child. The fact she’s the daughter of legendary actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh means she was literally born for the business. Her breakout turn in Halloween kicked off a film career that included hits like Trading Places, True Lies, Freaky Friday and culminating in Curtis winning an Oscar for Everything Everywhere All At Once.
In terms of television, Curtis has had surprising appearances, such as starring in the ABC sitcom Anything But Love. She’s had recurring roles on NCIS and New Girl yet given her movie fame, seeing Curtis on TV is rare.

Sitcoms have been a cornerstone of television throughout the medium's history, and there are countless reasons for their popularity. By putting relatable characters in hilarious situations, sitcoms provide an escape from the dramas in life, typically in short half-hour bursts.
While the desire for high-quality sitcoms has remained strong, streaming platforms have flooded the market, producing new original series regularly. It's virtually impossible to catch up with every new TV series, and this competition can make it hard for sitcoms to compete for audience attention. While there have been many excellent sitcoms, too many get canceled way too soon.
Updated by Arthur Goyaz on July 24, 2024: Shows like Friends and Seinfeld will always be remembered as iconic products of their time, but their popularity overshadowed other prominent shows. Some of the best sitcoms out there failed to find their target audience because of tough competition. This list was updated to include fresh sitcom recommendations.

After a quarter century, HBO’s Curb Your Enthusiasm will conclude, once and for all, with its April 7 finale — and I’ve got a pret-tay, pret-tay, pret-tay good idea of how it’s all going to end for everyone’s favorite curmudgeon, Larry David.
In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s the only way to bring this 12-season experiment in social indecency to a satisfactory close.

So what can be said about Andy Dick that the paparazzi and nearly every Judge from West Virginia to Los Angeles hasn’t already said? He was once a rising star in the comedy world with lovably nerdy characters on hit TV series before his demons grabbed a hold of him and took him down an over 25 year path of endless headlines with his name often times preceding the word “arrested.” In those years, he has compiled more Mug Shots than Head Shots and went from Star on the Rise to Registered Sex Offender. Yeah, I don’t know how else to say this other than: Wtf Happened to Andy Dick?!
But as always we must begin at the beginning and the beginning began on his birthday, December 21, 1965 in Charleston, South Carolina. After graduating high school in the suburbs of Illinois, Andy would study at the famed Second City and...

As “Curb Your Enthusiasm” prepares to bid farewell after a 24-year run and 12 seasons on HBO, star J.B. Smoove argues there’s one mystery left unsolved that he’d love to see get the spin-off treatment: What was Leon Black up to before he met Larry David?
“I’d be a fool to say I wouldn’t be open to a spin-off,” Smoove told TheWrap. “I think this dude has levels to him. We don’t know what he does when he’s not with Larry, we don’t know where he came from. I think there’s something to this guy that’s really interesting in how he sees things.”
Leon first appeared in “Curb” during Season 6 when he decides to take refuge at Larry and Cheryl’s house after his family is displaced by a hurricane — and proceeds to never move out. Over the subsequent seven seasons, he...

Daddy Dearest showed Lewis' comedic talent alongside Don Rickles, proving his versatility in TV sitcoms despite a short run. Lewis shined in Game Day as the snarky, non-traditional sports coach, adding a unique charm to the unlikely role. Vamps highlighted Lewis' emotional depth in a horror-sex comedy, proving his interest in diverse projects beyond traditional comedy.

The comedy world—heck, the whole world—mourns the passing of Richard Lewis, whose death was announced yesterday. The 76-year-old comic was a mainstay on the circuit since the mid-1970s. Though he has several comedy specials and movie appearances under his belt (plus the early 1990s sitcom “Anything But Love” opposite Jamie Lee Curtis) his most widely-seen work was surely as Larry David’s bickering foil on “Curb Your Enthusiasm.”
Lewis’s amplified version of himself appeared in the first regular series episode in 2000 (recall that “Curb” began as a one-off special in 1999), and can be currently seen in the 12th season, which is now airing.
Lewis was nominated for a SAG Award in 2006, for Best Ensemble in a Comedy Series. His special “The I’m Exhausted Concert” was nominated for a Cable Ace Award in 1989.

I was 10 when Anything But Love came out. I’m fairly certain it drew my love map in indelible ink, and Richard Lewis — whom we sadly lost Wednesday — held the pen.

Richard Lewis’ career has, in some ways, always been defined by his proximity to darkness. As a stand-up comedian, he laid bare his personal struggles with drug addiction and alcoholism, pacing across the stage in his trademark all-black uniform, wringing his hands while he recounted how deeply he hated himself. (The title of his 1985 standup special? “I’m In Pain.”) And on Curb Your Enthusiasm, in which he played himself in perhaps his best known role, his health struggles became fodder for the show, with a 2005 kidney transplant inspiring a whole season arc.

Comedian Richard Lewis, who died February 27 at 76, had a 40-plus year career in film and TV, starting with Diary of a Young Comic, a 1979 TV movie in which he played a fictionalized version of himself. He went on to his own TV series Anything But Love opposite Jamie Lee Curtis, roles in 7th Heaven, Til Death, Blunt Talk and, of course, his long run on Curb Your Enthusiasm.

Lewis, known for his role on Curb Your Enthusiasm, died Tuesday night at his Los Angeles home after suffering a heart attack, his publicist told The Hollywood Reporter. The Anything but Love actor revealed in April last year that he had been living with Parkinson’s disease and was retiring from stand-up.
Larry David, the star and creator of Curb Your Enthusiasm, shared in a statement: “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me. He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”

Richard Lewis, the wild, eccentric, ultra-neurotic stand-up comedian and comic actor who most recently served as a semi-regular alongside Larry David on “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” is dead. He was 76. Lewis suffered a fatal heart attack Tuesday night less than a year after announcing in April 2023 that he had been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease and was retiring from performing stand-up comedy. Lewis’ death was confirmed by his publicist Jeff Abraham, who noted, “His wife, Joyce Lapinsky, thanks everyone for the love, friendship and support and asks everyone for privacy at this time.”
He appeared this month on the 12th and final season of “Curb” after begging off of the show in its 11th season while recovering from a series of surgeries. But he wound up shooting a scene in an episode that year, anyway.

Larry David has offered a tribute to his longtime “Curb Your Enthusiasm” co-star and friend Richard Lewis, who died of a heart attack Tuesday at the age of 76.
“Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital and for most of my life he’s been like a brother to me,” David wrote in a statement Wednesday, shared by HBO. “He had that rare combination of being the funniest person and also the sweetest. But today he made me sob and for that I’ll never forgive him.”
Lewis emerged as a fan favorite over his appearances across more than 40 episodes of “Curb,” including the 2000 pilot. Like David, Lewis played a somewhat fictionalized version of himself in the series. In 2021, Lewis publicly announced that he would not return to the long-running program to take time to recover from three surgeries. However, he later reversed course to make a one-scene appearance.

Richard Lewis, one of the most influential stand-up comedians of his era and Larry David's hilariously neurotic best friend on HBO's "Curb Your Enthusiasm," has died at the age of 76. The official cause of death was listed as a heart attack.
Lewis belonged to a class of comedians who turned joke-telling into a confessional art form. His contemporaries were Richard Belzer, Elayne Boosler, Robert Klein, and Jerry Seinfeld. Lewis got belly laughs out of failed relationships, depression, anxiety, and addiction. He was reliably, identifiably miserable, which was a balm for anyone in his audience who happened to be struggling because, no matter how awful his life seemed to be, he was always back on stage the next night or bantering with David Letterman a week month later after recounting his latest crisis.

‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ Guest Star Troy Kotsur Reveals the Joke That Made Larry David Break Character
Note: The following story contains spoilers from “Curb Your Enthusiasm” Season 12, Episode 3.
Sunday’s episode of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” titled “Vertical Drop, Horizontal Tug,” sees Larry David hit the golf course, where he eavesdrops on a lesson that improves his swing a little too well.
The lesson is given to Troy Kotsur, a deaf actor who is best known for his Academy Award-winning supporting role in the Apple TV+ film “Coda.” Through the rest of the episode, Kotsur’s feud with David intensifies as he’s hit in the back by one of Larry’s golf balls and later hit with a bagel intended for a homeless man.
To keep the narrative spontaneous, “Curb Your Enthusiasm” is shot without a script. Cast members are given scene outlines so they can improvise lines as they go. The actor opened up about how his prior experience in improv helped him make David...

Larry David has returned to bless us with his final gripes.
HBO has released the trailer for the 12th and final season of its Emmy-winning comedy Curb Your Enthusiasm.
The 10-episode final season continues to see David as an over-the-top version of himself navigating his social and professional life in Hollywood. The show has spanned nearly 25 years given its irregular production schedule, which was largely dependent on when David felt ready and inspired to make another season. It’s also HBO’s longest-running series.
In December, when David confirmed the new season would be its last, he released this statement: “As Curb comes to an end, I will now have the opportunity to finally shed this ‘Larry David’ persona and become the person God intended me to be — the thoughtful, kind, caring, considerate human being I was until I got derailed by portraying this malignant character. Stand-up comedian and “Curb Your Enthusiasm” actor Richard Lewis revealed in a video posted to Twitter that he has been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease. The comedian said he’s had “sort of a rocky time” over the past three years with his health. In addition to Parkinson’s disease, Lewis had several surgeries on his shoulder, back and hip. For these reasons, Lewis is strictly focusing on “writing and acting” these days and is no longer performing stand-up.
“Hey listen, I just wrapped a couple of weeks ago season 12 of ‘Curb Your Enthusiasm’ and it was just an amazing season and I’m so grateful to be a part of that show,” Lewis said. “But you know the last three and a half years, I’ve had sort of a rocky time and people said, ‘I haven’t heard from you, are you still touring?'”

Richard Lewis, the 78-year-old comedian and co-star of “Curb Your Enthusiasm,” posted a video on Sunday to give a little update about his life and career. He knows that fans have been wondering if he’ll ever tour again. The answer to that appears to be “no” due to a feeling of completion with what he’s done with that art form after 50 years, but also a series of health problems.
In the joke-free but still upbeat video, Lewis says that three-and-a-half years ago he completed a tour and felt that if he were to stop, he’d be going out on top. Then, afterward, “the shit hit the fan,” as he put it, and he underwent four back-to-back surgeries, including a hip replacement. Two years ago he was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease.

Growing up as the child of movie stars Janet Leigh and Tony Curtis, Jamie Lee Curtis learned early on the difference between real life and a photo op. When she launched her career as the 19-year-old breakout of John Carpenter’s 1978 “Halloween,” who made audiences care whether she got mauled by Michael Myers — and decades later, the new Jason Blum “Halloween” that put her back in the spotlight as a scream queen — Curtis didn’t get hung up on being taken seriously.
“I remember the first day on ‘Halloween 2018′ that I was working with the young actress Andi Matichak,” Curtis said on a Zoom call. “It was a very intense scene for her and she came in fully loaded. It was 28 years ago that Jamie Lee Curtis attended the inaugural Screen Actors Guild Awards, as a nominee for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Helen Tasker in the action comedy “True Lies.” She would watch as Dianne Wiest accepted the prize for her portrayal of another Helen (Sinclair) in the gangster gag show “Bullets Over Broadway.”
Now, almost three decades later, Curtis has once again been singled out by the SAG Awards. She contends for the ensemble award as part of the cast of A24’s “Everything Everywhere All at Once.” And she has another shot at the supporting actress title for her turn as the unpitying IRS inspector Deirdre Beaubeirdre. “Everything Everywhere” holds an overwhelming lead in the Gold Derby odds for SAG’s top honor, making it almost inevitable that Curtis will become an official champion come February 26.
But can she make it two for two?...

Jamie Lee Curtis Says She Has “Emerged” While Celebrating the “Beautiful Gift of Aging” in Hollywood
Jamie Lee Curtis is getting candid about what it’s like getting older in Hollywood, saying, “I’m pro-aging! I feel more alive today than I ever have, even with Covid.”
On Saturday, Curtis was recognized with the AARP Career Achievement Award at the Movies for Grownups Awards. In an interview with the magazine, she expressed how lucky she is to “continually have had an opportunity to expand.”
“I’m talking about expanding intellectually,” she added. “I’m an autodidact and an opsimath — a late-in-life learner. I feel very fortunate that I’m having more creative opportunities — I’m getting to do what I’ve wanted to do since I was a teen. I’m starting to produce and direct things.”
The actress, who received her first Oscar nomination for her role in Everything Everywhere All at Once, recently took to Instagram to reflect on her 2008 cover for AARP: The Magazine.
