At least once a year, Lera Lynn considers quitting music. She says the social media obligations alone have been enough to send her packing. But it’s when she encounters a fellow artist’s particularly stellar album, song, or even video that the singer-songwriter asks herself a recurring question.
“Who am I fooling?” Lynn says. “These people are good. They should be the ones making music, not me. I think that’s something everyone can relate to. There are a bunch of different reasons why one can be discouraged.”

In mid-March, while Americans were beginning to reckon with job losses and isolation spurred by coast-to-coast shelter-in-place orders, Bj Barham performed the American Aquarium songbook for shut-in fans via livestream, one album at a time. On the sixth night, he debuted the band’s new album, Lamentations (New West Records), released on Friday.
As Barham performed skeletal, acoustic versions of the songs, he kept reaching back to the title track, “Me + Mine (Lamentations),” to explain the album’s theme. In the song, inspired by the Old Testament’s Book of Lamentations,...

Playwright David Mamet has expressed sympathy for his longtime friend Felicity Huffman and her husband, fellow actor William H. Macy, following her indictment in a widespread college admissions bribery scandal.
In a statement sent to media outlets on Tuesday, Mamet also slammed the “elite universities,” calling their admissions policies “an unfortunate and corrupt joke.”
“I’ve known Felicity Huffman for those 35 years, she was my student, my colleague, worked in many of my films, and created roles on stage in three of my plays,” Mamet said. “I’m crazy about them both. That a parent’s zeal for her children’s future may have overcome her better judgment for a moment is not only unfortunate, it is, I know we parents would agree, a universal phenomenon.”
Huffman debuted on Broadway in 1988 in Mamet’s “Speed the Plow” and won an Obie Award in 1995 for her work in Mamet’s “The Cryptogram.

Legendary magician and actor Ricky Jay has passed away. He was 72-years old. Jay died at his home in Los Angeles on Saturday from natural causes. Ricky has been hailed as one of the greatest sleight of hand artists of all time, and was known for his crazy card and memory tricks. He was listed at one time in the Guinness Book of Records for throwing a playing card 190 feet at 90 miles per hour. In addition to his magic work, Jay was also a gifted writer, actor, and consultant.
Little is known about Richard Jay Potash's early life. He was born June 26th, 1946 in Brooklyn, New York. He didn't speak about his childhood very much at all to the public. Ricky Jay, a singularly skilled magician whose acting career included roles in “Deadwood” and “Boogie Nights,” died in Los Angeles yesterday. He was 72. The news was confirmed by Jay’s manager, Winston Simone, who said that he died of natural causes and “was one of a kind. We will never see the likes of him again.”
“I am sorry to share that my remarkable friend, teacher, collaborator and co-conspirator is gone,” tweeted Michael Weber, Jay’s partner in the Deceptive Practices Company.
Jay was the subject of a 2012 documentary, “Deceptive Practice: The Mysteries and Mentors of Ricky Jay,” directed by Molly Bernstein. It explored his revered career as a magician, as did a 1993 New Yorker profile that referred to Jay as “perhaps the most gifted sleight of hand artist alive.” Those talents also brought him work as a behind-the-scenes consultant on movies like “The Prestige,” “The Illusionist,” and “Ocean’s Thirteen.

The first trailer for Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom has finally arrived online. The trailer has received mixed reactions from fans, but there's a whole lot of action in it and it definitely helps set up the plot, which will involve a volcanic eruption on Isla Nublar and an attempted rescue mission for the dinosaurs on the island. However, as much as it looks like this trailer lays out the entire movie on a platter, that's far from the case. In fact, writer and producer Colin Trevorrow reveals that the trailer only contains footage from the first hour of the movie.
Colin Trevorrow, who directed the first Jurassic World, took to Twitter last night to make the rather unexpected reveal. A fan expressed concern that it looks as though the Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom trailer lays out all three acts of the movie, with the bulk of the action taking place in the third act,...

Whose Episode Is It?
“Time for After” has probably the most important plot development in Season 8 since the premiere, so why does it feel like such a shrug? It certainly doesn’t help that the majority of the episode is devoted to reiterating a bunch of stuff we already know about Eugene, a character that’s truly emblematic of the show’s diminishing returns. The real meat of the story is Daryl and Tara’s successful operation to upend Rick’s big plan and crush the Saviors in one fell swoop, casualties be damned, but it’s given about 12 minutes of screen time and the debate of its merits might be the most cursory discussion this show’s ever featured, which is saying something.

Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige has talked a lot about Avengers: Infinity War bringing huge changes to the McU. But, it sounds like big changes are already set to come in a Marvel film coming out much sooner. Director Taika Waititi's Thor: Ragnarok is set to be released later this year and according to Feige, that movie will drastically change things in the McU and set up Avengers: Infinity War.
During an interview with the Toronto Sun, zfeige was asked if Thor: Ragnarok will be the end of a trilogy and this was his reply:
“I think that we are finding ourselves as we complete Phase 3 and finish this 22-movie narrative that it’s working out that way. We did three Iron Man films, three Captain America films, three Thor films. Things change drastically in Ragnarok and then build directly into Infinity War.”
There are obviously no details on how things will "drastically" change,...

Normally, we think of the summer as being the only season boasting blockbusters, but it’s important that we not forget how huge this fall will be when it comes to superhero movies. Not only do we have Justice League to look forward to, but there’s also Thor: Ragnarok, which brings the Odinson’s journey in the Marvel Cinematic Universe thus far to a head.
Though the film is still pretty far off – with a November 3rd release date locked in – it’s a big project for the studio given that the first two Thor movies are often regarded as some of the McU’s weaker efforts. As such, there’s a lot of pressure on Taika Waititi’s threequel to turn things around for the God of Thunder and understandably, Marvel is doing everything in their power to make sure that the third time’s the charm for the hero.

Several months ago, it was revealed that superstar writer Mark Waid had decided to scrap his originally solicited stories for Archie #20 and the few issues to follow in favor of something with a little more gravitas. As it turned out, that gave way to the “Over the Edge” story arc that saw Archie and Reggie engage in a street race that didn’t end well for one person.
Aside from any alternate universes that may be overrun with zombies, there are normally four characters we believe to be safe, no matter if it be in the comics or on the Riverdale TV series: Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Veronica Lodge and Jughead Jones. Thus, many of us were left thinking that someone such as Reggie or Moose would end up biting the dust.
Well, it so happens that Waid decided to play it anything but safe as Betty became the one to suffer the most coming out of a three-car crash, and has since been left clinging to life. Yes, this is a most shocking turn of events, but here’s the author’s reasoning as to why he did this to such an important character:
“She’s the heart of Riverdale, which not coincidentally is the title of our next arc. One of the biggest reasons we had for telling this story at all was to show our readers — and our characters — just exactly why that is. Betty’s such a giving person that it seems like half the town depends on her, whether it’s to volunteer at the animal shelter or to read to the blind or to deliver meals or to coach Pee Wee soccer and so forth. Now she’s out of action for the foreseeable future, and her absence will create a void that, it’s gonna take the entire gang to fill, if they can.”
But, according to this statement made by Waid, it looks like Betty may very well eventually recover:
“This isn’t new. Serialized drama, especially in comics, is all about perception of change. Archie, like Superman or Batman, is going to change but always revert, in some way, back to his iconic setup. It’s about the journey – the story. That’s what we’ve been saying since we announced the book. So, while Betty will face death, deal with the ramifications of this crash and while we will show how her friends respond to the tragedy, I think it’s safe to say things will shake down and we’ll eventually get back to the status quo people have come to know.
But it’s about the story. It’s about getting there and the journey to and from these dramatic moments. I’m not spoiling anything by saying Betty doesn’t die and that she’ll eventually get better. That’s comics 101. Things change, things swerve back and then change again. But it’s about the story and how we go from here to there.”

The central romance of “Better Call Saul” is one of the most profound on television — because on the surface, it’s barely there.
When viewers first see Jimmy (Bob Odenkirk) and Kim (Rhea Seehorn) together in the pilot episode, the scene proves to be a memorable introduction: He finds her smoking in the Hh&M parking garage, and barely touches her as he plucks the cigarette from her mouth, taking a drag before returning it to her lips.
The moment speaks to a pre-established intimacy between two people we don’t really know yet, and as the series has continued, there’s still a lot to be uncovered about who these two people are, and what it means when they’re together. Part of that comes from how subtly creators Vince Gilligan and Peter Gould have woven their love story into the narrative, most notably avoiding the sort of physical...

It is a pretty good time to be a horror fan. Over the past few years, there has been a true resurgence in quality, studio horror movies, and A24 has unleashed yet another fine example of excellent genre storytelling. It Comes at Night is, without question, one of the most unique, unsettling and truly outstanding horror experiences of 2017 so far and is a must see for anyone who enjoys genre movies.
In A24's It Comes at Night, Paul (Joel Edgerton}) has managed to secure his family within a desolate home as an unknown and deadly threat terrorizes the world. He, along with his son Travis (Kelvin Harrison Jr.) and wife Sarah (Carmen Ejogo) have managed to establish a fragile but workable existence in isolation, but they soon realize just how fragile it really is. Things change and they are put to test when a desperate family disrupts their life,...

The question of who would win in a fight between Aquaman and the Green Lantern was typically left to fan forums until Mortal Kombat developer NetherRealm allowed players to figure it out for themselves in 2013’s Injustice: Gods Among Us. The superhero fighting game ended up being quite the success, and now four years later, the developer has teamed up with DC Comics again for Injustice 2. Does the sequel raise the bar, or should players just stick with the original?
Perhaps the most surprising thing about Injustice 2 is how little has changed in terms of combat. This isn’t a bad thing, as the original took Mk-style fighting and added character specific skills and environmental attacks to the mix. There’s some small tweaks (most environmental attacks can now be blocked), but don’t expect anything huge like Street Fighter V‘s “V Trigger” system. NetherRealm stuck with what worked,...

People turned into rats, Quentin and Julia made a deal with a dragon, and Senator Gaines felt guilty for using his god-powers.
And those insane moments barely scratched the surface of the events unfolding on The Magicians Season 2 Episode 11 "The Rattening."
Each storyline and twist ramped up the sense of urgency in the characters. We're on a rollercoaster speeding toward the end of the season.
While a case could be made for each and every lady earning the Mvp award, Julia's actions took her to the head of the line.
Despite being separated from her shade, the former Hedge Witch is thinking with a clear head. Kady locking her up on The Magicians Season 2 Episode 9 turned out to be the best thing for her.
The rules of how lack of shade affects people continue to be sketchy. But maybe that's okay. Maybe Julia finding the strength to overcome her demons...

Romantic comedies are rarely more than something we use as a form of escapism and rarely do they depict anything that seems remotely real. In fact, they probably give us a lot of false expectations when it really comes down to it. However, when a romantic comedy is done in the right way, it can be a shining example of some of the best that cinema has to offer us. That is exactly what has been done with The Big Sick, a movie that could and probably should wind up in the awards season conversation at the end of the year.
Amazon's The Big Sick tells the real-life story of comedian Kumail Nanjiani and how he and his wife Emily Gordon fell in love. The two fall hard for one another and things seem great until Kumail's Pakistani traditionalist family drives a wedge between them. Things change when Emily mysteriously...

Fans have been promised a "historic" moment on tonight's The Bachelor: After the Final Rose post-finale special. Promos are teasing it as a "Bachelor first"! So, what could creator Mike Fleiss be giving us?
Here are our theories:
1. New Bachelorette Rachel Lindsay's cast members are revealed.
The typical timeline for our new season of The Bachelorette was thrown out when Lindsay was announced as the new Bachelorette in February. Usually, this announcement is made during (or after!) After the Final Rose. So, we're thinking the "Bachelor first" could be in the same vein of Lindsay's reveal: a timeline change. Usually, contestants wouldn't be revealed until the weeks before the show's May premiere. Plus, a source close to the show tells Et filming for Lindsay's season begins this week!

Can fate be changed?
Do we shape our own destinies?
Several characters debated those questions on Once Upon a Time Season 6 Episode 11, "Tougher than the Rest."
The flashbacks were kept to a minimum, which was a smart choice considering the alternate reality Emma and Regina faced.
But the small flashback did provide us with the answer to a much-asked question: how did Emma adopt the last name Swan?
It turns out she has August to thank for that as well as the story of The Ugly Duckling.
If you believe in something strongly enough, we all have the power to change our fate.

There is a whole lot of excitement from a whole lot of nostalgic millennials about the upcoming Power Rangers movie. Lionsgate is just going to have to hope that they all turn out to see the movie in theaters, or they could be in trouble because this reboot didn't come cheap. As it turns out, the new Power Rangers movie wound up costing a lot more than was originally expected.
It was originally rumored in the early stages of this Power Rangers movie coming together that it would have a production budget of around $35 million. Things change and a lot of times movies go over budget, but in this case, the movie wound up being triple the original rumored budget. According to the Toei Films Twitter account, Lionsgate's Power Rangers reboot had a budget of 12 billion yen, or $105 million. That makes this movie a lot more risky for a few key reasons.

It’s been nearly two decades since the passing of Akira Kurosawa and since then we’ve seen a few posthumous works based on his unfilmed scripts, including 1998’s After the Rain and 2002’s The Sea is Watching. In 2020, we’ll be getting together. It’s been announced that two major Chinese production companies are teaming to produce The Mask of the Black Death.
Huayi Brothers Media and Ckf Pictures are teaming to bring Kurosawa’s script, based on Edgar Allan Poe‘s short story The Masque of the Red Death, to screens, reports China.org (via AkiraKurosawa.info). Written by the Yojimbo director in 1977 following production on Dersu Uzala — when he was also working on Ran and Kagemusha — the story is set in a apocalyptic landscape with a plague threatening the world and the royal family ignores the suffering of those afflicted.

Chicago – “The Lego Batman Movie” is more of a parody than the laugh-out-loud hijinks of the surprising “The Lego Movie,” but the legend of The Bats is ripe for a good skewering, and the movie has a lot of fun doing it. Will Arnett reprises the voice as the title character, with Zach Galifianakis taking on the antics of The Joker.
Rating: 3.5/5.0
Unlike the first Lego film, the Batman version is a recitation of jokes that are pretty much tipped off, wrapped around a squirrelly “Batman needs a family” plot line. Both tend to drag down the lightness that the Lego franchise has established, but the jokes are lighting fast, rarely pausing to take a breath. Don’t like this one-liner? Here are ten more in the next two minutes. There were five screenwriters on this one, and I picture them being more like Jay Leno-like jokesters than a cohesive team.

The most modest and least celebrated of the films produced by Japan’s peerless Studio Ghibli, “Ocean Waves” was conceived as an opportunity for the company’s younger talent to make something on the cheap. In spite of those simple aspirations, the project came in late and over budget, eventually airing on local television in 1993 and failing to make much of a splash. Since then, the sentimental high school drama has existed just outside the Ghibli legend, more of a curiosity than part of the canon, unseen to all but the studio’s most dedicated completists.
The first Ghibli film that wasn’t directed by either Hayao Miyazaki or Isao Takahata, “Ocean Waves” is glaringly absent the former’s flair for fantasy or the latter’s gift for minimalist heartbreak. In both scale and subject, it cleaves closer to the delicate wistfulness of a Haruki Murakami novel — one of his earlier,...

The last time Lisa Vanderpump saw Lisa Rinna and Eileen Davidson, the 56-year-old restauranteur was trading barbs with them on the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills reunion.
It was a tense argument built around a season of accusations from the Housewives claiming that Vanderpump had been manipulating them to engage in discussions they didn’t want to be a part of — including a plot to expose Yolanda Hadid’s alleged Munchausen Syndrome.
But on Tuesday’s premiere season 7 premiere of the hit Bravo franchise, both Rinna and Davidson were ready to leave the battles in the past and move on.

"Abominations" was a Very Special Episode of Legends.
Unfortunately, I'm going to have a lot of people breathing down my neck, because I don't think DC's Legends of Tomorrow Season 2 Episode 4 worked.
Individually, the plotlines were fine, but together they were hard to stomach. The line that really drove that home for me was from Stein, "I suppose there will always be those who will seek to dehumanize us, but I believe there are more that cling to hope, despite the darkness."
It wasn't until he mentioned dehumanization that I correlated slaves and zombies. Just...no. Maybe I was reading too much. Wouldn't be the first time!
So. Some dude from another planet crashed on earth, Mississippi, 1863. Silly me, I thought he was a metahuman. Nope, just a zombie, because those with the virus are often flying through the universe. Whatever.
Ray: You Ok?
Mick: We were attacked by zombies.

We learned Disney star Zendaya was cast in Jon Watts' Spider-Man: Homecoming back in March but a new rumor of who she's playing has some fans outraged. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 director James Gunn has made lengthy comments about race, comic book casting, and fan reaction. Details were scarce in the initial report which said Zendaya would be playing "Michelle." At the time I assumed it was likely a coverup to keep the secret of who she was really playing under wraps for a while. The rumor now is she's actually playing Mary Jane Watson, Peter Parker's long-standing love interest. Some fans did not want to accept this news because Mj is portrayed in the comics as a white woman with red hair. Many other fans were quick to argue it wasn't a big deal, some with the most simplest of responses: @r_scottc so you're good then?...

Those who can draw possess a great skill that is quite easy to envy if your greatest masterpiece involves stick figures with hats. I, myself, fall into the latter category, and was always impressed (and a bit jealous) of how well my cousins could draw while we were growing up. Of course, now that I’m older, and an adult colouring book champion, that doesn’t bother me as much. However, I’m sometimes reminded of just how bad my drawing skills are.
Disney has attempted to come to the rescue of people like me — at least, those who are children at heart — with its latest 3Ds title, Disney Art Academy. Developed in partnership with Nintendo, it’s a kid-focused game about learning how to draw. Or, in this case, finding out how to draw both classic and modern Disney/Pixar characters on a touchscreen while using a stylus pen.

Sometimes great little oddities will fly under the radar. And sometimes they barrel roll out of the sky and blast through the earth never to be seen again. The Flesh Eaters (1964) is a prime example of digging through the filmic wreckage and dredging up a low budget winner. Sure, it’s not Citizen Kane, but it’s probably the Citizen Kane of Killer Microbes Versus Buxom Blondes On An Island With A German Scientist movies.
The Flesh Eaters should be just more low budget fodder from an era when any flickering images were sacrificed to the Drive-In Gods (see the same years’ The Horror of Party Beach – or rather, don’t). The set up and pedigree sure don’t help the argument – five people stranded on an island battle a monster, it’s an independent production, and a first (and last) time director helms – but a convergence of actual talent...

With the nation of Panem in a full scale war, Katniss confronts President Snow [Donald Sutherland] in the final showdown. Teamed with a group of her closest friends – including Gale [Liam Hemsworth], Finnick [Sam Claflin] and Peeta [Josh Hutcherson] – Katniss goes off on a mission with the unit from District 13 as they risk their lives to liberate the citizens of Panem, and stage an assassination attempt on President Snow who has become increasingly obsessed with destroying her.
The mortal traps, enemies, and moral choices that await Katniss will challenge her more than any arena she faced in The Hunger Games. On a cold day in early 2014, HitFix Harpy was among those invited to check out the set of “Warcraft.” Now I’m finally able to share (some) of that information with you! As a former World of Warcraft addict that occasionally lapses with each new expansion, I was skeptical. After all, video game movies don’t have the best track record. But after spending a day with the cast and crew of “Warcraft,” I think if anyone can break the video game movie curse, it’s these guys. The “Warcraft” universe is vast, with over a decade’s worth of lore spanning both games and novels. Trying to condense that into a single film would be a fool’s errand so Duncan Jones and his collaborator’s had to pick a story. They settled on one surrounding the King Llane Wrynn of Azeroth, Lothar, and Medivh on the human side...

Nora Dunn, the five-season "SNL" alumna who played one half of the Sweeney Sisters with the late Jan Hooks, weighed in on Trump's upcoming appearance with a HuffPost column about how "SNL" has changed and why the Donald won't be the first or last time the show is disappointing. There have been many incredible moments and big laughs and eye-popping craziness on Saturday Night Live. And that will continue, I hope. The show is part of our collective conscious. Things change in a big way for Elena this week, as The Vampire Diaries motors up to its season six endgame...
This review contains spoilers.
6.20 I'd Leave My Happy Home For You
Elena is human again, folks, and we’ve been transported back to season four – figuratively and literally – for some old-fashioned Delena angst in the process.
Yes, suddenly the worst storyline of season six – Elena erasing her memories of Damon but getting back together with him anyway – has a purpose. After taking the cure, a move I honestly didn’t expect despite (or because of) all signs pointing that way, she remembers the last time the McGuffin was around, when Damon refused to take the cure with her because of... reasons.
Now, then, she’s decided that asking Damon to become human would lead to a lifetime of resentment and, just like that, we have one final obstacle for these two to overcome.

The two met in San Diego during the early 2000s, years before she met and married hubby Bill Rancic ... but things got complicated when he cheated on her with Spice Girl Geri Halliwell. "I was being two-timed...?" the E! News host wrote (via Page Six), before describing the actor's reaction. "'Yeah, I know. I'm so sorry. I don't know what happened.' He has as much emotion as the customer-service representative who tells you your bags missed the flight." Despite Jerry's behavior, Giuliana gave him another chance. But at Maxim's 100 Hottest Women Party in 2004, the "Fashion Police" star spotted her beau getting flirty with his current wife, Rebecca Romijn. "Little did I know he was in the VIP area,...
