Apple TV+ Sets Vietnam Docuseries From Emmy-Winning Team Behind ‘9/11: One Day In America’
Image
Exclusive: Apple TV+ has turned to the producers of Emmy-winner 9/11: One Day In America to tell the story of the Vietnam War.

72 Films, the British production company owned by Fremantle, will mix immersive archive footage with first-person testimony for Apple’s six-part docuseries Vietnam: The War That Changed America.

The show has been commissioned to mark the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon and will bring together soldiers and civilians on all sides who lived through the conflict.

Each episode features reunions and the emotional stories told by those who faced agonizing life-or-death situations and impossible moral decisions.

Vietnam: The War That Changed America is directed by Rob Coldstream, who teamed with 72 Films to helm John Lennon: Murder Without a Trial for Apple last year.

Caroline Marsden (9/11: One Day In America) produces. Executive producers are David Glover (9/11: One Day in America) and Mark Raphael (Crime and Punishment...

‘The Sympathizer’ Puts Robert Downey Jr. in Prosthetics One Last Time for Finale
Image
[Editor’s note: Spoilers for “The Sympathizer” below.]

Turns out there was a very good reason for Robert Downey Jr. playing multiple roles in A24/HBO’s “The Sympathizer,” which is revealed in the Episode 7 finale. That’s when the versatile actor turns up in a surprising cameo as the Captain’s (Hoa Xuan Nguyen) father — a French Catholic priest, donning a long dark beard — and we learn that his other four character turns are toxic manifestations of the patriarch who disavowed him.

In fact, it’s a revelation to the Captain as well when all of them blend together in his mind as troubling paternal figures during a traumatic flashback. There’s Claude, the pop music-loving CIA operative; Hammer, the gay East Asian studies professor; Ned Godwin, the military vet-turned-congressman; and Niko, the counter-culture film director. They all contribute in a surreal way to the Captain’s identity crisis as a North Vietnamese communist spy and South Vietnamese sympathizer.

12 Angry Men: Why Everyone Thinks It's Based On A Book (& They're Wrong)
Image
12 Angry Men started as a teleplay, not a book, and gained popularity through its stage production and subsequent movie adaptation. The original movie received numerous awards and nominations, proving the story's enduring appeal. While there are books available based on 12 Angry Men, they contain the published script rather than a novelization of the story. A novelization may be possible in the future.

While many believe the 1957 movie 12 Angry Men started out as a book, this assertion is incorrect. In the courtroom drama movie, a jury deliberates whether a young boy is guilty of murdering his father and if he should get the death penalty. Though only Juror 8 initially dissents from a guilty verdict, he provides a compelling enough argument to sway the other jurors. This story is considered one of the cornerstones of the courtroom drama genre. It increased interest in the judicial process and addressed many...

David Fincher's The Killer: Everything We Know
Image
One of this year’s most anticipated movies is The Killer by Colorado-born Golden Globe winner and Oscar-nominated David Fincher. It follows the journey of a cold-blooded assassin who finds himself in a psychological crisis in a world lacking a moral compass. Michael Fassbender plays the lead, a haunted, troubled assassin desperate to extricate himself from the political consequences his assignments have led to.

Updated September 3, 2023: In honor of The Killer's premiere at the 80th Venice Film Festival, this article has been updated by Yosra Ben lagha with more information regarding the upcoming David Fincher film.

The film is based on a French graphic novel of the same written by Alexis "Matz" Nolnet and illustrated by Luc Jacamon, which has been in the makings for the past twenty years. It has become one of the most anticipated movies of 2023 and just recently had its Venice Film Festival premiere.

Professor Flunks All His Students After ChatGPT Falsely Claims It Wrote Their Papers
Image
A number of seniors at Texas A&m University–Commerce who already walked the stage at graduation this year have been temporarily denied their diplomas after a professor ineptly used AI software to assess their final assignments, the partner of a student in his class — known as DearKick on Reddit — claims to Rolling Stone.

Dr. Jared Mumm, a campus rodeo instructor who also teaches agricultural classes, sent an email on Monday to a group of students informing them that he had submitted grades for their last three essay assignments of the semester.

Mike Mignola and Lemony Snicket Create Reimagined, Gothic ‘Pinocchio’ (Exclusive)
Image
A new, hot literary collab just dropped: Hellboy creator Mike Mignola and Lemony Snicket from “A Series of Unfortunate Events” fame are partnering up for an illustrated and annotated edition of Carlo Collodi’s classic novel “Pinocchio.” Variety has the first look of the little wooden boy, reimagined by Mignola.

Teaming back up with award-winning colorist Dave Stewart, Mignola returned to his gothic roots for a reimagining of the centuries-old story that will be published by Beehive Books. But despite the wooden boy’s recent, Oscar-winning popularity, Pinocchio has always influenced Mignola’s oeuvre.

“This is a book I’ve loved since I read it when I was a young teenager,” Mignola told Variety. “I really think between this and Dracula, this is what’s formed whatever the hell it is I do, my sensibilities.” When first approached by Beehive Books to contribute to their collection of reworked literary classics,...

The Ending Of Better Call Saul Invokes A Literary Classic
Image
Spoilers for "Better Call Saul" follow.

"I want to believe there's a heaven. But I can't not believe there's a hell." "Breaking Bad" creator Vince Gilligan has used this quote, cribbed from his partner Holly Rice, to explain his moral outlook. It may seem cynical on the surface, but buried within is a belief in justice. After all, the last moment of "Breaking Bad" is Walter White/Heisenberg (Bryan Cranston) falling dead as Badfinger sings, "Guess I got what I deserved."

Gilligan's philosophy of justice permeates "Saul Gone," the finale of prequel/sequel "Better Call Saul" about Heisenberg's lawyer, the once-and-future Saul Goodman — real name Jimmy McGill (Bob Odenkirk). During "Saul Gone," the captured Jimmy's goal changes from escaping justice to redeeming himself in the eyes of his ex-wife Kim Wexler (Rhea Seehorn). So, he throws away the mother of all plea deals, lays his soul bare in court, and is sentenced to prison.

Ben Whishaw to Play Russian Dissident Eduard Limonov in New Film From Kirill Serebrennikov (Exclusive)
Image
Versatile British actor Ben Whishaw, best known globally for playing Q in five James Bond films, has been cast in what’s bound to be the one of the most complex roles of his career.

The actor will play the titular character in “Limonov, The Ballad of Eddie,” a new English-language film by revered Russian auteur Kirill Serebrennikov, about radical Russian poet and political dissident Eduard Limonov.

The film, which will be presented as a promo reel to buyers in Cannes on May 17, is inspired by the best-selling novel “Limonov” by French writer and director Emmanuelle Carrère, which was translated in 35 countries. See interview with Serebrennikov.

“Limonov” delves into the story of Eduard Limonov, who lived many lives. He was an underground writer in the Soviet Union who escaped to the U.S. where he became a punk-poet and also a butler to a millionaire in Manhattan. “Eddie” then became...

‘Crime and Punishment’ Limited Series in Development at Start (Exclusive)
Image
International streaming service Start has announced it is developing a limited series adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic novel “Crime and Punishment.”

Created and directed by Vladimir Mirzoyev, the eight-episode drama series will follow the book’s protagonist Rodion Raskolnikov, as well as his sister Dunya.

Like the book, the series follows the desperate and indebted Rodion, who is swayed by a dark force to commit petty theft in a supermarket. Tormented by his conscience, Rodion is led to murder an old woman, causing crippling guilt and paranoia to set in.

While the novel takes place in 19th century Russia, the series is set in modern-day St. Petersburg, providing “a new perspective on one of the most philosophically important pieces of Russian literature of all time,” according to the press release.

“We love to play with new styles and genre tropes, and we’re excited to give fresh breath to...

Jon Robin Baitz Savors the ‘Slow Burn’ of Paul Schraeder’s ‘Card Counter’
Image
For Variety‘s Writers on Writers, Jon Robin Baits pens a tribute to “The Card Counter” (screenplay Paul Schrader).

“Card Counter,” written and directed by the austerely insistently un-vibrant moralist Paul Schraeder, is composed to a certain slow metronomic beat. It ticks-ticks-ticks slowly, like the sound, inaudible to human ears of someone’s brain counting cards, waiting for the right moment to bet modestly enough to win small.

But bet on what? He’s spent decades placing wagers on the reasons for our bottomless capacity for American soul sickness. It’s how he makes films – he uses time and the slow burning accumulation of wrath and rage and bad vibes and bad faith to create a hallucinatory kind of tension that eventually has nowhere to go and nothing to do but explode. God bless the man; the most American filmmaker we have, making little European-sized films with patient actors who...

The Face Behind the Mask
Image
Is this a horror classic? I’d certainly says yes, just for the shrewd, sympathetic performance of Peter Lorre as an unlucky immigrant whose disfigurement in a fire turns him to life of crime and vengeance. An impossibly young Evelyn Keyes shines as the sweet love interest, but the performances and Robert Florey’s good direction keep the tone from going soft. And the ending is as bleak and chilling as they come. Whatever you may do, my recommendation is to Not double-cross Peter Lorre. The disc producers give experts Alan K. Rode and Kim Newman the podium, and they respond with three full extras on this highly unusual, seldom-seen gem of a horror film.

‘Chernobyl’ Wins Big at BAFTA TV Awards
Image
Forever underlining the strangeness of the Primetime Emmy Awards calendar, the BAFTA TV Awards were held Friday, celebrating several previous Emmy winners and nominees, including HBO’s “Chernobyl,” Netflix’s “When They See Us,” in addition to Sian Clifford of Amazon Prime Video’s “Fleabag.”

Speaking of “Fleabag,” the BAFTA awards body appeared to officially end its lukewarm love affair with Phoebe Waller-Bridge before it truly began. The “Fleabag” creator and star was nominated for Female Performance in a Comedy Programme as well as Scripted Comedy and lost in both categories, in addition to losing out in the Best Writer — Comedy category at the BAFTA TV Craft awards announced earlier this month. The losses bring Waller-Bridge’s overall BAFTA TV record to 1-8, with her only win coming in Best Female Performance in a Comedy for the first season of “Fleabag.”

“Chernobyl,” which took home 10 Emmy Awards last September, nabbed...

BAFTA TV Awards Winners: ‘Chernobyl’ & ‘The Crown’ Among Those Battling It Out For Prizes
Elizabeth Debicki in The Crown (2016)
BAFTA is today staging the industry’s biggest TV awards since the coronavirus pandemic swept the globe, with Submarine director Richard Ayoade hosting a 90-minute virtual ceremony from a studio, as winners stay at home.

The event, which is being broadcast on BBC One from 7Pm local time (11Am Pt), will feature guests including Normal People stars Daisy Edgar-Jones and Paul Mescal handing out prizes, while red carpet arrivals were replaced by a pre-show on BAFTA’s social channels.

Sky/HBO drama Chernobyl is on course to dominate the night after scooping a record-equalling haul of 14 nominations, and winning seven prizes at the BAFTA TV Craft Awards earlier this month. Other big 2019 hits will feature, including Fleabag and The Crown, after the delay to the awards, which were originally meant to be staged on May 17.

Elsewhere, there are eight Bame nominees in the performance categories, which is an increase of...

The 20 Best Asian Films of 2018
20 of the contributors of Asian Movie Pulse have voted the 20 Best Films of 2018, resulting in what we consider a great selection, both regarding the top and the overall diversity, since the list includes films from Japan, S. Korea, China, Indonesia, India, Vietnam, The Philippines Thailand, and even a France-Belgium-Luxembourg co-production with a Cambodian setting, while the genres include everything from extreme violence and mainstream films to art-house, documentaries and animation, and even a Netflix film.

Without further ado, here are the best films of 2018, in reverse order. Some films may have premiered in 2017, but since they mostly circulated in 2018, we decided to include them.

20. Buybust

All of the above make it quite clear that “BuyBust” presents a combination of “The Raid” and “The Villainess”, but I also thought that it shares some similarities with “Mad Max” particularly in the way the villains and the setting are presented. Nevertheless, in terms of presentation,...

The Best Brooklyn Nine-Nine Episodes
Alec Bojalad Nick Harley Nov 14, 2019

Brooklyn Nine-Nine Season 7 is coming in February. While you wait, get caught up with 24 of the show’s "noicest" episodes.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine gave us a real scare there.

After Fox declined to renew the show for a sixth season, fans had to wait and excruciating 31 hours for NBC to pick up the show and bring it back home where it's always belonged.

That 31 hours felt like a lifetime. When the show finally returned, on its new home, it delivered the laughs and heart that fans of the highly-quotable ensemble comedy went out of their way to save. Season 6 was such a success, that the show will move forward with Season 7.

Brooklyn Nine-Nine is such a tonally consistent and persistently funny show that there are few episodes that truly stand out. The show's 100+ episodes just feel like one big glob of excellent comedy. Still, we've decided...

New Jersey Governor Vows to Restore Garden State’s Production Tax Credit
Watch out New York. According to New Jersey’s newly elected Gov. Phil Murphy, the Garden State’s film and television production tax credit will be returning soon.

The Governor made a surprise appearance Saturday night at the seventh annual Montclair Film Festival’s closing night festivities and announced that he will re-establish the state’s long defunct film production incentive.

“This is a great state not just to watch films,” Murphy said. “We have got to get back to doing what we used to do really well and make them in New Jersey. We have the artists. And by the way – I’m going to sign a law in the next few weeks that will give the financial incentives back.”

It’s been more than eight years since former Gov. Chris Christie suspended the state’s film tax program.

In 2005 a New Jersey production incentive was created to boost...

Ted Kennedy in Charlie Rose (1991)
Jason Clarke on ‘Chappaquiddick’ and Ted Kennedy: ‘How Do You Get Past What He Did?’
Ted Kennedy in Charlie Rose (1991)
When casting someone as iconic and all-American as Ted Kennedy, one might not immediately think of Jason Clarke, the Australian actor best-known for films like “Zero Dark Thirty” and “Mudbound.” Yet in “Chappaquiddick,” which chronicles the infamous accident and aftermath that nearly took down Kennedy’s rising star, Clarke perfectly channels the complicated politician during a turning point in his life and career.

And if you’re the kind of person who puts any stock in coincidence, consider the following: Clarke was born the day before the July 18, 1969, incident in which Kennedy drove off his car off a bridge and his 28-year-old passenger Mary Jo Kopechne drowned. He even happened to cross paths once with the late Kennedy; the two attended a boating event when he was a relatively unknown actor on the Showtime series “Brotherhood.”

Questions of fate and destiny weigh heavy in “Chappaquiddick,” which hits theaters April 6 and...

John Goodman movies: 20 greatest films ranked from worst to best, including ‘The Big Lebowski,’ ‘Barton Fink’ …
John Goodman
John Goodman shockingly never won an Emmy for his role as working-class father Dan Conner in “Roseanne” despite competing seven consecutive times as Best Comedy Actor for the ABC sitcom (1989-1995). He did eventually win as Best Drama Guest Actor in 2007 for “Studio 60 on the Sunset Strip,” but now he could finally cash in that “Roseanne” Emmy I.O.U. with the upcoming series revival, premiering on Tuesday, March 27. But Goodman hasn’t only made a name for himself on TV. In honor of his return to the small screen, let’s take a look back at some of his best big-screen performances. Tour through our photo gallery above of Goodman’s 20 greatest films, ranked from worst to best.

Surprisingly (and criminally), not one of these roles brought Goodman an Oscar nomination. He did compete at the Golden Globes as Best Supporting Actor for “Barton Fink” (1991), but the academy...

Roseanne Barr proclaims her 1st and only Emmy win was ‘overwhelming’ and ‘awesome’ [Watch]
It took five years of blockbuster ratings for “Roseanne” on ABC before its star and co-creator Roseanne Barr finally won an Emmy Award. With a big smile she proclaims, “I was just overwhelmed. It was awesome. I was sad I couldn’t be there” about her first and only (so far) Emmy victory. We recently chatted with Barr on the red carpet of the Hollywood premiere of the revival for “Roseanne” (watch above), which returns to the alphabet network this week almost 30 years after the original debuted.

The working class comedy began in 1988 and was one of ABC’s top hits for almost a decade. The show never received a Best Comedy Series nomination, and it took until the fourth season before both Barr and fictional sister Laurie Metcalf received nominations. Metcalf took home a trophy...

Timothée Chalamet on His ‘Hero’ Paul Thomas Anderson and ‘Intensely Honest’ Scene in ‘The Master’ That Changed His Life
Daniel Day-Lewis and Vicky Krieps in Phantom Thread (2017)
It’s the hottest move on the awards season circuit these days: using an acceptance speech to pay homage to your cinematic heroes while also attempting to line up your next big gig. At last week’s New York Film Critics Circle Awards, “Phantom Thread” star Lesley Manville filled in for Paul Thomas Anderson when it came time to accept his Best Screenplay award, reading off a speech that included an appeal to Best Supporting Actress winner Tiffany Haddish to work with him, going so far as to literally provide her (and the entire room) with his phone number in hopes of connecting.

At Tuesday night’s National Board of Review awards event in New York City, the tables were turned, with Breakthrough Performance winner Timothée Chalamet, the revelatory star of “Call Me by Your Name,” using his own acceptance speech to profess his adoration for Anderson, lightly asking for...

Party Favors: Simon Hunter & The Mutant Chronicles
London - The Mutant Chronicles unleashes cannibalistic humanoids into a steam punk World War I world. The movie features Thomas Jane (Hung), Ron Perlman (Hellboy), Devon Aoki (Sin City), Sean Pertwee (Doomsday) and John Malkovich (Being John Malkovich) as the only defense against these ungodly creatures in the CGI enhanced environment. Can Aoki cut them all down with her cool sword?

Director Simon Hunter took nearly two years to adapt the role playing game into a cinematic universe. You can get great sense of what he undertook for his first major motion picture on the Two-disc Collector’s Edition DVD and the Blu-ray recently released by Magnolia Home Entertainment. I had a chance to swap questions via email with Hunter. Here’s the Q&A action:

Joe Corey: Have you played the game?

Simon Hunter: Yes I have played the game and enjoyed it very much - the...
