Fear Street: Prom Queen Arrives: Netflix Unleashes 1988 Slasher Mayhem!
Image
The blood-soaked streets of Shadyside are calling once more. Netflix flings open the doors to a terrifyingly familiar past with the global premiere of Fear Street: Prom Queen, the latest installment in the hit horror franchise based on R.L. Stine’s chilling book series. Available for streaming now, this fourth chapter transports viewers to 1988, promising a deadly dance steeped in ’80s slasher glory and the enduring curse that haunts the ill-fated town.

The arrival of Fear Street: Prom Queen marks a significant return for the franchise, nearly four years after the innovative weekly release of the Fear Street trilogy in the summer of 2021 captivated audiences and earned critical acclaim. That trilogy masterfully wove a narrative spanning centuries, and its success clearly signaled a potent appetite for Stine’s darker, more mature brand of horror.

The film’s 1988 setting is a deliberate dive into the era of big hair and even bigger shoulder pads,...

One minute of Fear Street: Prom Queen looks a bit like 1980s Squid Game
Image
One minute is all it took to get us hooked. Netflix's latest R.L. Stine flick is set for release this weekend, and you know you will want to watch. Fear Street: Prom Queen is the fourth installment of the Fear Street franchise and might be the scariest. That is based on the one minute of footage the streaming giant gave us.

Fear Street: Prom Queen takes place in 1988 and follows the ongoings of who will be prom queen in Shadyside. The It Girls think they have the situation under control, but then an outsider is nominated for queen and all heck starts breaking loose.

The It Girls start disappearing, which might make us think the outsider is behind it. But why be so obvious? Surely, that is not the case.

One minute of Fear Street: Prom Queen is enough to make you watch (and be fearful)

The great thing...

Netflix’s Fear Street: Prom Queen slasher brings blood, secrets and ’80s vibes
Image
Are you ready for slasher season, Netflix fans? With the summer movie releases (and into October), we can expect a bunch of horror films. Some of these will be quite good, as horror is a relatively underrated genre.

Of course, it isn't for everyone. Many don't like to see gruesome murders, and that is entirely fair. Even though the filmmaking might be brilliant, it is difficult to get past all the gore. Being scary and chilling is good, but being gross to be gross is bad.

The good thing about most R.L. Stine adaptations is that they take the intentional campiness of the original material, add the gore, and give us something relatively short and entertaining. For instance, Fear Street: Prom Queen, which debuts on Netflix on Friday, May 23, is only an hour and 28 minutes long.

Netflix's Fear Street: Prom Queen will be arriving soon

The film is Netflix's fourth...

Julia Roberts’ Best Role in 24 Year Old Movie That Landed Her an Oscar Has Left Netflix – Where to Watch It Now?
Image
Julia Roberts is no stranger to playing the girl next door. Since starring in her debut romcom, Mystic Pizza, Roberts had made the role of everyone’s dream gentle girl her own, cementing her legacy with roles in Notting Hill and Pretty Woman.

At the turn of the century, many believed that playing those roles was what Julia Roberts was best suited for. But it is a veteran star’s hallmark that they never agree to get stereotyped. And Roberts proved that she had more to offer with Erin Brockovich.

Ben Affleck And Matt Damon Briefly Worked With Kevin Costner On A Classic Sports Movie
Image
Phil Alden Robinson's 1989 sports drama "Field of Dreams" is Americana at its corniest. In many ways, literally; the main character, Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner), bulldozes a large portion of his corn farm in order to build a brand-new baseball diamond. Ray did so at the behest of a ghostly voice that instructed him, "If you build it, he will come." Sure enough, when he builds the diamond, the ghost of "Shoeless Joe" Jackson (Ray Liotta) appears on it, still wearing his Boston Black Sox uniform, and converses with him.

Ghosts, time travel, and premonitions are a big part of "Field of Dreams," and it's implied that baseball itself is connected to divine powers that are eager to grant related wishes, calm hearts, allow for post-mortem redemption, and provide reconciliation between fathers and sons. Case in point: Ray and his wife Annie (Amy Madigan) have a dream about Fenway Park in Boston,...

12 Years Later and We Still Miss These 10 Things About ’30 Rock’
Image
30 Rock remains a masterpiece in workplace comedies, and Tina Fey isn’t often appreciated enough for creating the show. The former head writer of NBC’s SNL brought her real-life experiences to the show, where her character Liz Lemon is the head writer of the series Tgs with Tracy Jordan. It was a fun-filled take on the corporate structure of NBC.

While it did not enjoy the ratings success of other similar workplace sitcoms like The Office or Parks and Recreation, it was nominated for a total of 103 Emmys. Fey used her signature surreal humor to bring to life the world of television that she knew and prospered in.

She has to put up with Alec Baldwin’s network boss Jack Donaghy, Tracy Morgan’s unpredictable actor Tracy Jordan, and Jane Krakowski’s narcissistic actress Jenna Maroney. The show ran from 2006 to 2013, and the cast came together for a...

Good Will Hunting: How Matt Damon’s Harvard Assignment Became An Oscar-Winning Script
Image
Matt Damon Harvard Script Turned Film(Photo Credit –Prime Video)

Before Matt Damon was walking across a stage with an Oscar in hand, he was just a Harvard student procrastinating his way into cinematic history. His fans, especially the ones who thought they knew everything about him, were recently left wide-eyed when they stumbled upon the unexpected backstory behind Good Will Hunting, a film that didn’t just launch his career but made him a household name.

Matt Damon’s Journey: From Mystic Pizza to Movie Stardom

Damon’s screen debut came in Mystic Pizza back in 1988, where he had a small role in the romantic dramedy, mostly remembered today for being a nostalgic artifact. But it would take nearly a decade, and a script that came out of a college assignment gone rogue, for him to truly make waves. By 1997, he was no longer just that kid from Massachusetts with acting dreams,...

Everyone Forgets That Val Kilmer Was One Of The Best Comedy Actors Of The '80s
Image
Movie stardom rarely occurs overnight. Yes, there is typically a film where the star "arrives," but this performance usually comes after a series of supporting turns in movies or TV shows where they've swiped a scene or two. Eddie Murphy rocketed to fame via "48 Hrs.," but this came as no surprise to anyone who'd been watching him kill it on "Saturday Night Live." It might've felt like Peter O'Toole exploded out of nowhere in "Lawrence of Arabia," but his portrayal of a too-credulous guard in "The Day They Robbed the Bank of England" put moviegoers on notice that he was a special talent. And Julia Roberts popped in ensemble films like "Satisfaction" and "Mystic Pizza" before becoming America's sweetheart in "Pretty Woman."

When I rolled out of bed on the morning of June 22, 1984, Val Kilmer did not exist. When I came home from the movies that night, he was one...

Yes, Kingpin! ‘Daredevil: Born Again’s Vincent D’Onofrio Was a Legit Heartthrob in This Underseen '80s Classic Roger Ebert Loved
Image
Vincent D’Onofrio is now having a career renaissance thanks to his return to the role of Wilson Fisk on the Disney+ series Daredevil: Born Again, which has allowed him to reprise the part that he played to such perfection in the original 2015 Netflix series. One of the reasons that seeing D’Onofrio do such continuously excellent work in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is that he has been a compelling character actor for years, as it was a breakout role in Stanley Kubrick’s brutal anti-war film Full Metal Jacket that kicked off his career. While he’s often called upon to play ruthless villains and anti-heroes, D’Onofrio showed his romantic side in the coming-of-age drama Mystic Pizza, which Roger Ebert famously referred to as a film that would “become known for the movie stars it showcased back before they became stars.”...

This 25-Year-Old Julia Roberts Movie Led to 1 of the Greatest Oscar Wins of All Time
Image
The Academy Awards over the years have garnered a strange reputation. Every year, without hesitation, fans will turn on their televisions to watch the pompous program, and celebrities will flock to the Dolby Theater to take part in it. Despite the awards banquet remaining a huge deal to virtually everyone, it truly seems like no one is happy with the state of the program. A mountain of complaints have been leveled against the Academy over the years, from "#OscarsSoWhite" to complaints of sexism, to allegations of xenophobia. The most common complaint, however, is far less serious and far more avoidable, and it concerns the "Consolation Oscar."

A consolation Oscar is a term for when an award is given to a legendary actor who is deserving of an Academy Award for their body of work, but isn't quite deserving of the one they received the award for. It is a collective...

Image
Once again, Netflix does not have much to offer its subscribers in terms of original films this month. The streaming service has, however, added a wide range of great movies from other studios to its platform. Here are the best new-to-Netflix movies streaming in February.

Director Andy Muschietti’s “It” wisely makes the decision of only adapting one half of its Stephen King-penned source material. Set in the late 1980s, the film follows the adolescent members of the “Losers Club,” a group of misfits who bond over their shared outsiderness within their small town of Derry, Maine, and their experiences...

Macaulay Culkin's 'Richie Rich' Reaches Top 10 Streaming Chart on Netflix
Image
Richie Rich, the 1994 comedy starring Macaulay Culkin, is a streaming success. The film, currently available on the Netflix library, has spent a few days on the streamer's top 10 list of most popular movies. Richie Rich is sitting in the eighth spot at the time of writing, while other titles on the list include The Menu, Back in Action, and How to Train Your Dragon 2.

Directed by Donald Petrie, Richie Rich is based on the comic book character of the 1950s. The character also had an animated cartoon show in the 1980s, which was then revived in 1996 after the release of the movie. Richie Rich only made $76 million from a $40 million production budget and had a mixed reception by critics; it currently has a 27% score on Rotten Tomatoes. Although it was considered a box office flop, Richie Rich blew up the home video market and made an estimated $125 million in home video sales.

Pretty Woman’s Lead Role Went Through Multiple Actresses Before Julia Roberts Hit Stardom
Image
Pretty Woman’s lead role went to various actresses before Julia Roberts ( Photo Credit – Instagram )

After this, Julia Roberts snagged the role to launch her to global fame. It was a classic mix of talent, timing, and, let’s be honest, some seriously quirky Hollywood decisions.

Let’s start with Molly Ringwald. The teen queen of the 1980s turned down Vivian because she felt “something icky about it.” She candidly told The Guardian that even back then, she sensed a story vibe that just didn’t sit right. Ringwald’s hesitation paved the way for others to test their luck—and face similar hurdles.

So who else tried to snag the role of Vivian? Let’s just say Disney and Garry Marshall, the director behind Pretty Woman, had some ambitious picks. Karen Allen was first in the mix. Then came Winona Ryder, Jennifer Connelly, and even Diane Lane. But each time,...

The Star Wars franchise continues to expand in new and interesting ways with the space opera saga having multiple projects in the works at the same time. The film recently completed seven years since its release, leading to fans taking to social media to discuss the divisive film. Following its release, the film received widely polarising reactions becoming one of the most disliked entries in the franchise. The perception is unlikely to change any time soon given what fans are saying about The Last Jedi on its seventh anniversary.

“I could not get a job at Miramax”: Julia Roberts’ ‘Mystic Pizza’ Co-Star Never Worked With Harvey Weinstein That Sounds Truly Badass Now

The stories of Harvey Weinstein don’t seem to end. With the amount of influence he had in the industry and just how infamous his reputation was, it is not surprising that the world was stunned at the true extent of his nefariousness. Before he became a convicted s*x offender for some very serious charges, he was simply known as the bully of the industry.

Although she has starred in classic films like Julia Roberts’ Mystic Pizza, James Wan’s The Conjuring, and even Liam Neeson’s The Haunting, she has never worked with Weinstein.

It would seem that this was a very intentional professional decision on both their sides, and Taylor...

Matt Damon's Oppenheimer Character Explained (& What The Actor's Said About His Role)
Image
Matt Damon's appearance in Oppenheimer as Lt. General Leslie Groves is as memorable as any in the celebrated historical epic. The cast of Oppenheimer is filled with some of the biggest heavy-weight actors playing some of the most important people in recent American history. It's a bit darkly humorous that it took an Englishman like Christopher Nolan to thoroughly examine one of the most defining moments of the United States. Dozens of real critical figures are accounted for in Oppenheimer, some for a scene, others as main characters.

After a brief but critical role in Interstellar, Matt Damon finally got a starring part in a Nolan production. Damon's career really does not need much introduction. He's been headlining movies for the greatest working directors since his debut in Donald Petrie's Mystic Pizza. There's never really been a down year for him. While he's succeeded in playing every type of character,...

Roberts’ big break arrived the following year when she played Daisy in the rom-com drama Mystic Pizza, and the following year she played Shelby in the drama Steel Magnolias, for which she got her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress.

In the 1990s, Roberts explored different genres, such as sci-fi with Flatliners, thriller with Sleeping with the Enemy, and fantasy with Hook. However, Roberts’ strength in the 1990s was rom-coms, starring in Pretty Woman, My Best Friend’s Wedding, Notting Hill, and Runaway Bride. All of these earned a spot in pop culture and rom-com history and none of them got a sequel,...

Julia Roberts Rejected A Sequel To $363M Rom-Com Because It Was "A Poor Idea"
Image
Julia Roberts turned down the chance to make a sequel to her $363 million '90s rom-com due to disliking the proposed storyline. Considered one of the greatest and most bankable stars of modern Hollywood, Roberts made her breakthrough with roles in movies including Mystic Pizza and Steel Magnolias, before shooting to global prominence with her first leading role opposite Richard Gere in Pretty Woman. The movie was a box office hit, grossing $434 million globally, and earned Roberts the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress, catapulting her to superstardom.

With a glittering career, Roberts became one of the most bankable stars of the '90s and '00s, with notable leading roles in movies including Ocean's Eleven, Runaway Bride, and My Best Friend's Wedding. She also gave an Academy Award-winning performance in the true story adaptation Erin Brockovich. Roberts was named the highest-paid actress in the world on several occasions, and...

Pairing up with iconic filmmaker Gus Van Sant, the duo not only starred in the feature, but also co-wrote it. Not only that, but the casting team also went the extra distance, assembling a lineup that included Robin Williams, Minnie Driver, and Stellan Skarsgrd. Image
Some audiences might have first spotted Matt Damon during a notable dinner scene in Donald Petrie's hit 1988 drama "Mystic Pizza." Thereafter, Damon turned up as an extra in "Field of Dreams" and as one of the many handsome students in the 1992 boarding school thriller "School Ties," both of them with his longtime friend and collaborator Ben Affleck. Damon went on to score some considerable screen time in Edward Zwick's "Courage Under Fire" before delivering his first lead performance in 1997 in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Rainmaker." That same year, Damon and Affleck became acclaimed Academy darlings for writing and starring in Gus Van Sant's "Good Will Hunting." Steven Spielberg and Julia Roberts 1990s Feud, Explained
Image
The number of Hollywood feuds is practically unfathomable, and it's not always easy to keep up with the latest beef. Though problems often arise between co-stars when the cameras turn off, disagreements have been known to happen between directors and actors. The tabloids had a field day with Julia Roberts and Kiefer Sutherland during their notorious relationship, a distraction that caused a lot of tension on Steven Spielberg's Hook set in 1991. Spielberg accused Roberts of poor behavior on set, but it's almost hard to imagine when looking back at both of their careers because neither of them seems to have endured any further instances of that nature since.

These types of feuds are notorious, however, with one of the most well-known being the heated tensions that flared between Kramer vs. Kramer costars Dustin Hoffman and Meryl Streep. Hoffman a noted Method actor verbally and physically harassed Streep, later confessing...

Image
Have you ever considered what it’s like to stand at the crossroads of familial legacy & personal ambition? For Emma Roberts, this seems to be a daily reality. As the daughter of actor Eric Roberts (King of the Gypsies), and, more notably, the niece of cinematic darling Julia Roberts (Mystic Pizza), Roberts has endured the choppy waters of Tinseltown with a surname that resonates with stardom.

However, she’s no stranger to the sting of criticism regarding her family connections. In a recent candid revelation, Roberts confronts the double-edged sword of being a so-called ‘nepo baby’ in the industry. “He was great and look at him: he’s gone nowhere, has he?”: Christian Bale Felt Matt Damon Won’t Make it Big After Watching His 1 Movie Starring Brendan Fraser
Image
Have you ever found yourself questioning the future success of an up-and-coming star, only to be later delightfully proven wrong? That was precisely the case with The Dark Knight star Christian Bale, who, after watching Matt Damon’s performance in Robert Mandel’s School Ties, harbored doubts about the latter’s prospects in Hollywood.

In a candid GQ interview, Bale reflected on a time when his own career seemed to be in a lull, revealing how he wasn’t quite convinced that Damon, despite his evident talent, would achieve fame. For Bale, the realization came quickly, but just “three days” later, while watching Good Will Hunting, it led him to the undeniable conclusion: talent combined with perseverance is a force to be reckoned with!

Critic’s Notebook: Nancy Savoca’s ‘Dogfight,’ a ’90s Gem With Timely Resonance, Enters Criterion Collection
Image
A good movie hug, one that’s more than a neat tie-up, can pack a wallop, especially in the final stretch of a gripping story. The proportions of bittersweet angst and healthy schmaltz vary. The situation might be a charged reunion, a heartrending goodbye or a romantic declaration. Films as unalike as It’s a Wonderful Life, E.T. and Reds offer memorable clinches. But I can’t think of a screen embrace as packed with complex emotion and metaphoric zing as the one that closes Dogfight.

Nancy Savoca’s 1991 drama, digitally restored and arriving April 30 in a Blu-ray special edition from the Criterion Collection, defies genre expectations at every turn. In certain ways — beautiful ways — it’s as winningly awkward as its protagonists, portrayed by two of the most gifted risk-takers of their generation, River Phoenix and Lili Taylor. Thoroughly cinematic yet also endearingly stagy (no wonder it inspired a...

“He’s always terrible”: Matt Damon Gives His Verdict on Jimmy Kimmel’s Oscar Hosting That Most Fans Will Agree With
Image
Do you enjoy watching the Oscars? Do you love looking forward to seeing who will take home the coveted golden statue every year? Well, if this is the case, you’re not alone. However, there is one aspect of the show that some viewers have mixed feelings about- the host. Over the past few years, Jimmy Kimmel has become a regular fixture as the host of the Academy Awards.

Some viewers love Kimmel’s tongue-in-cheek banter and humorous sketches, while others find his hosting style to be unwelcoming and uninteresting. And it appears that one of the popular faces of the industry concurs with this idea: Matt Damon.

With a blunt assessment of Kimmel’s hosting skills at the 96th Academy Awards, the actor calls it “terrible”. While some fans may find this to be a harsh statement, many will likely concur with the Mystic Pizza star.

“I’m not getting any younger”: Matt Damon is Ready to Pass the Baton for Jason Bourne Despite Failed Attempt With Jeremy Renner in the Past
Image
Yes, it is true. Edward Berger, the director of All Quiet on the Western Front & Jack, is in talks to direct a new flick about super spy Jason Bourne. The upcoming film would be the latest entry in the successful Bourne franchise, which has brought in over $1.6 billion at the box office through five films (four of which starred Matt Damon). Jeremy Renner played Aaron Cross in the fourth Bourne film, which brought in $276 million despite receiving mixed reviews.

Many fans were therefore left to speculate as to whether the Mystic Pizza star would return to Universal Pictures’ acclaimed action franchise. During his recent visit to The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Damon, 53, declined to confirm his presence in the next Bourne flick when the host brought up the topic. However, the actor did sense that “someone is going to need to take it over” eventually.

The 12 Best Julia Roberts Movies, Ranked
Image
With her thousand-watt smile and wild mane of curly hair, Julia Roberts has an effervescence that is unmatched. Roger Ebert once described her as "an actress with a winning way; we like her, feel protective toward her, want her to prevail." She has a natural luminosity that conjures an unforgettable and commanding on-screen presence. Roberts quickly rose to fame after her role in "Mystic Pizza" in 1988. Throughout the 1990s and into the millennium, she became one of the most celebrated female actors and a bona fide movie star.

While she is often associated with romantic comedies, Julia Roberts has also tackled many intense roles. She has earned four Academy Award nominations and won for "Erin Brockovich," which also established her as one of Hollywood's highest-paid actors. She became the first female actor to receive a $20 million paycheck for a film (via History.com). In her three-decade-long career, Roberts has emerged...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From Say Anything
Image
"Say Anything" marked America's transition into the 1990s by sealing off the heyday of feel-good high-school rom-coms and goth rock in the '80s. It was a major and much-needed send-off that is probably still an all-time favorite among many a Gen-x-er today.

The coming-of-age hit from 20th Century Fox featured breakout stars like John Cusack and Ione Skye. Even the supporting roles were played by soon-to-be major players like Pamela Adlon or the children of mega-famous stars like Jason Gould.

But not every actor featured in the 1989 romance movie survived into 2024. Unfortunately, John Mahoney, who played Diane's hypercritical (and hypocritical) father, James Court, passed away back in 2018. The late actor was the oldest major cast member by quite a few years and was in his late 70s when he passed. Before his death, Mahoney had an incredible career in film and television — his supporting role as Martin Crane in...

Mother's Day: Is Britt Robertson Related To Julia Roberts?
Image
Despite playing mother and daughter in "Mother's Day," Julia Roberts and Britt Robertson are not related in real life. Julia Roberts is an idol to Britt Robertson, who cited "Pretty Woman" as her favorite childhood movie. Working with Roberts on "Mother's Day" was a dream come true for Robertson, who had a positive experience with the veteran actress.

After the two actresses appeared together in Mother's Day, people began to wonder, is Britt Robertson related to Julia Roberts? Released in 2016, Mother's Day is a romantic dramedy directed by Garry Marshall. The movie takes place in Atlanta, Georgia in the days leading up to the eponymous day, and centers on an ensemble of characters' interconnected storylines, including Roberts' Miranda and Robertson's Kristin. Mother's Day is the third film in Marshall's unofficial holiday movie trilogy, alongside 2010's Valentine's Day and 2011's New Year's Eve. Unfortunately, none of these movies were particularly well-reviewed,...

Every Julia Roberts Rom-Com, Ranked Worst To Best
Image
Julia Roberts shines in her early films like "Mystic Pizza" and "Notting Hill," where she delivers strong performances. In "Pretty Woman," Roberts and Richard Gere have great chemistry, but the power dynamic and portrayal of sex work do not hold up today. Roberts subverts the rom-com genre in "My Best Friend's Wedding," playing an unlikable protagonist who learns and grows from her mistakes.

When it comes to romantic comedies, few actresses are as prolific and synonymous as Julia Roberts, but there is a clear hierarchy in her body of work. Throughout Roberts' career, she has starred in many films that have come to define the best and worst parts of the rom-com. Whether creating tropes that are now staples of rom-coms in her early films or subverting those very same tropes in her later work, Roberts has always been ahead of the rom-com curve.

Rom-com critics and connoisseurs have long...

Julia Roberts Is Better in Thrillers Than Rom-Coms
Image
Julia Roberts is to rom-coms as pepperoni is to pizza, which is why it's easy to forget that she's actually had just as successful a career within the thriller genre as she's had in romantic comedies. She's been the girl slinging pizza behind the counter in Connecticut in Mystic Pizza, and, of course, she's been the pretty woman in the appropriately titled Pretty Woman. But at the same time, she's also had to fake her own death to get away from an abusive husband in Sleeping With the Enemy and stay one step ahead of being killed seemingly by her own government with The Pelican Brief. Basically, Julia Roberts has done it all, but when it comes to thrillers, there's no stopping her, as evident in Sam Esmail's Netflix thriller Leave the World Behind, which she stars in with Ethan Hawke and Mahershala Ali.
