Vale David Hannay
Producer David Hannay will be remembered as one of the pioneers of the modern Australian film industry, a passionate cinephile, mentor and loyal friend.

The Nz-born filmmaker whose career spanned seven decades died on Monday, aged 74, after a long battle with cancer.

He entered the film industry at Artransa Park Studios in 1958 as an extras casting assistant on Ray Lawler's Summer of the Seventeenth Doll.

As a producer and executive producer he was involved in more than 50 film and television productions. His feature film credits include Stone, The Man From Hong Kong, Solo, Death of a Soldier, Emma.s War, Mapantsula, Shotgun Wedding, Gross Misconduct, Dead Funny, Savage Play, Love in Ambush and the feature documentary Stone Forever.

He was Head of Production for Gemini Productions (which merged with the Grundy Organisation in 1977) from 1970 to 1973 and again from 1975 to 1976, and general manager of the Greater Union production subsidiary The...

Tsr Exclusive: ‘Life, Above All’ interview with actress Khomotso Manyaka and director Oliver Schmitz
Met with a ten-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival two years ago, Life, Above All was South Africa’s official submission for the “Best Foreign Language” Oscar. It has since become picked up by Sony Pictures Classics (the same folks behind the record-breaking Midnight in Paris box office push), and was touted by Roger Ebert at his film festival “Ebertfest.”

The film tells the story of a young girl who is forced to carry the weight of her family when her mother runs away after rumors of AIDS in the community spread. Khomotoso Manyaka plays Chanda, the foundation that a whole community needs to understanding the destructive power of gossip, especially as it is hid amongst our own secrets.

I sat down with director Oliver Schmitz and his teenage actress Manyaka to discuss the film and its roots in restoring neo-realism cinema to South Africa.

Spc Nabs Cannes Pic Life, Above All
Sony Pictures Classics has picked up Oliver Schmitz's Life, Above All, winner of the Cannes Fest Francois Chalais Prize. The South African director is known for Mapantsula and his recent contribution to Paris, je t'aime. Life, Above All is based on Allon Stratton's young adult novel, Chanda's Secrets. The film follows a young African girl who struggles to hold her family together through death and tragedy. Spc acquired the pic from Munich's Bavaria Film International, from whom they had also bought Run Lola Run and Good Bye, Lenin!. Look for Spc to chase awards for the film; the distrib is usually a factor in the foreign Oscar race. It's reassuring that a subsidiary of the company trying to turn every entertainment experience into a 3-D spectacle still cares about supporting art films that tackle non-comic book topics like HIV in poverty-ridden sub-Saharan Africa.
