Fernanda Torres is the first Brazilian to win the Best Drama Actress Golden Globe
Image
Fernanda Torres is going in the Golden Globes history books. The I’m Still Here star won the Best Drama Actress Golden Globe on Sunday, becoming the first Brazilian to win the prize.

Torres is only the second Brazilian to be nominated in the category, following her mother Fernanda Montenegro, who was nominated 26 years ago for Central Station; she lost to Cate Blanchett for Elizabeth. Torres dedicated her award to her mother, adding that her win is proof that “art can endure in life.”

The actress is also the fourth performer to win the category for a non-English language performance after Anouk Aimée (A Man and a Woman), Liv Ullman (The Emigrants), and Isabelle Huppert (Elle). I’m Still Here, Brazil’s international feature submission at the Oscars, is in Portuguese.

Torres was in third place in the odds behind Angelina Jolie (Maria) and Nicole Kidman (Babygirl). The category was unusually...

Saoirse Ronan is getting some of the best reviews of her career for “The Outrun,” an intense drama about a woman battling her addiction to alcohol. No surprise then that she ranks among the top 5 on our Best Actress chart. She also has a featured role in Steve McQueen‘s upcoming “Blitz” as a mother in search of her missing boy in war-torn London. Currently we have her on the cusp of reaping a bid in Best Supporting Actress as well. Expect Ronan to crack the top 5 after “Blitz” drops at the London Film Festival on Wednesday (Oct. 9).

This Irish actress, who has already racked up four Oscar nominations to date, would join these dozen performers who pulled off this double play (the seven winners are in gold.)

Sigourney Weaver movies: 16 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Three-time Oscar nominee Sigourney Weaver has proven herself a capable leading lady in a variety of genres, including science fiction, fantasy, comedy, horror and drama. Let’s take a look back at 16 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Weaver made her film debut with a walk-on role as Woody Allen‘s girlfriend in “Annie Hall” (1977). Her breakthrough came just two years later for Ridley Scott‘s landmark sci-fi thriller “Alien” (1979). As Ripley, the lone survivor aboard a spacecraft besieged by a snarling, ferocious extra-terrestrial, Weaver broke down barriers for female action stars and helped launch a franchise that led to three sequels: James Cameron‘s “Aliens” (1986), David Fincher‘s “Alien 3” (1992), and Jean-Pierre Jeunet‘s “Alien: Resurrection” (1997).

“Aliens” brought Weaver her first Oscar nomination as Best Actress, a rarity for the genre. Not to be typecast, she found further success in a variety of roles that didn’t require donning a space helmet.

Venice Opening Ceremony Honors Sigourney Weaver in Style: ‘I Want to Roar,’ She Says, Accepting Golden Lion
Image
The 2024 Venice Film Festival has officially commenced.

Hard to say whether the audience loved the opening night film “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice,” which scored laughs here and there, and many a gasp or two at the inventive effects that pull the film even more into body horror territory. But its standing ovation at the end was cut short by the venue flashing the lights to signal that the actors needed to leave.

While Jenna Ortega, the primary new addition to the world of “Beetlejuice” had been the draw who has lined hundreds of Italian teenagers along the Lido, inside the theater, it was national icon Monica Bellucci who got the biggest applause, and she also happened to be who director Tim Burton had on his arm entering the theater. They’ve been dating since last year.

Outside of the “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” cast members in attendance — like Justin Theroux, Willem Dafoe, and returnees Michael Keaton,...

Alien Star Sigourney Weaver Had No Idea Ripley Would Become So Iconic
Image
Alien's sci-fi take on slasher tropes swept horror fans and film buffs, but many initially thought the movie was a one-off. Even Sigourney Weaver never expected that her breakout film (and most iconic role) would be a pop culture phenomenon.

Sigourney Weaver said she never expected Alien's impact would endure 45 years after its theatrical premiere. The actor recounted a stellar career highlighted by acclaimed roles in Ghostbusters, Gorillas in the Mist, Working Girl, and the Avatar movies. Fans and film buffs consider her performances in the Alien movies iconic, however; Ellen Ripley's arc in the franchise was defined and cathartic (despite her divisive death in Alien 3). In an interview with Deadline, Weaver explained her creative approach to the character; she also revealed why Ripley was such a great archetype for the hero's journey.

Sigourney Weaver Tears Up Pondering Legacy of ‘Alien’s’ Ripley and the Rise of Kamala Harris
Image
She’s survived xenomorphs, busted ghosts, lived among the gorillas, and co-starred in the top-grossing blockbuster of all time — and soon she’ll have a Golden Lion. Screen icon Sigourney Weaver, whose stately grace and steely will have captivated filmgoers for nearly 50 years, will be awarded the Venice Film Festival‘s top honor for lifetime achievement at the event’s glamorous 81st opening ceremony. Within the first five minutes of the sit-down, Weaver was brought to tears by a female journalist’s personal thank you for her pioneering performances as strong women characters — most notably, as the heroine Ripley in Ridley Scott’s sci-fi horror classic Alien — which shifted perceptions in the industry about the kinds of parts women could play and empowered female viewers everywhere.

Sigourney Weaver, On Eve Of Her Venice Lifetime Achievement Award, Lifts Lid On Remarkable Career From ‘Alien’ To ‘Avatar’, ‘Working Girl’ To ‘Ghostbusters’ And ‘Star Wars’ Role To Come
Image
Exclusive: Two years ago, Sigourney Weaver handed the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement to the filmmaker Paul Schrader. As she explains to us in a rare sit-down, she didn’t imagine that two years later she would be receiving the same accolade.

Looking over her career is to be quickly reminded that there are few actresses working today who are more deserving. Between Alien, Ghostbusters and Avatar, Weaver has left an indelible mark on some of cinema’s most iconic sci-fi franchises. As Ellen Ripley, she represented a heroine unprecedented in the action and sci-fi genre up to that point.

But the three-time Oscar nominee is perhaps most worthy of the Venice award she will receive at the festival Wednesday for her remarkable range, and her ability in the words of Venice festival director Alberto Barbera to “side-step labels that sought to restrict her”: “She...

Sigourney Weaver To Be Handed Venice Lifetime Achievement Award
Image
Sigourney Weaver has been awarded the Golden Lion for Lifetime Achievement at the upcoming Venice International Film Festival.

Venice chief Alberto Barbera called the thrice Academy Award-nominated Alien star “an actress with few rivals.”

“Strengthened by her significant theatrical training, she won over the great film-going public with Alien, directed by Ridley Scott, soon becoming an emblematic figure of the 1980s,” he added. “As an authentic collaborator, rather than simply a malleable instrument in the hands of a director, she has contributed to the success of movies by James Cameron, Paul Schrader, Peter Weir, Michael Apted, Roman Polanski, Ivan Reitman, Mike Nichols, Ang Lee, and many others, each time imposing the mark of a complex personality — at times contradictory but always authentic — onto her own charismatic presence. Endowed with a remarkable temperament, able to move with delicacy yet without fragility, she has created the image of a woman who is self-assured and determined,...

Robin Browne obituary
Robin Browne in Designing Bond: Peter Lamont (2000)
My friend Robin Browne, who has died aged 82, was a cinematographer specialising in aerial photography and special effects. His was not a name in lights, but he consistently excelled without the razzmatazz of Hollywood. I doubt there is anyone who has seen one of his films and not marvelled at the skills and dangers involved.

He started out as a clapper boy in the late 1950s, and worked on dozens of distinguished films over the next five decades, as camera assistant, operator and as director of photography leading specialist units. A few titles give a flavour: Battle of Britain (1969); Catch 22 (1970); the television series The Adventures of Black Beauty (1972-74), on which he was camera operator for all 52 episodes; three Bond movies in the 1970s; A Bridge Too Far (1977); Krull (1983); A Passage to India (1984); The Jewel of the Nile (1985); King Kong Lives (1986); Gorillas in the Mist (1988); and Gifted Hands: The Ben Carson Story (2009).

10 Times Actors Went To Ridiculous Lengths Mastering Skills For A Movie Role
Image
Actors push themselves to extreme limits, mastering new skills for their roles, like sword fighting and martial arts training. Jennifer Lawrence learned survival skills like skinning a squirrel to authentically portray her character in Winter's Bone. Tom Cruise went beyond CGI and learned to fly a helicopter for Mission: Impossible - Fallout, showcasing his dedication to authenticity.

Sometimes, actors will go to extreme lengths to master and learn a new skill solely for an acting role, no matter how grueling or difficult the process may be. This dedication to their craft is evident in their masterful performances, which often receive critical acclaim, admiration, and plenty of well-earned accolades. Some actors often spend months, sometimes years, researching, training, and living as their characters would, to ensure every nuance and detail of the performance is authentic. When the process of transforming into their character means taking on a whole new skill, the performances become even more impressive.

Jodie Foster (‘Nyad’) could get another Oscar boost from the Golden Globes
Image
Jodie Foster is fast becoming a sure thing for a Best Supporting Actress nomination at this year’s Oscars and her status as Golden Globe favorite for “Nyad” only boosts that theory.

Foster c0-stars in this Netflix biopic which charts Diana Nyad’s attempts to swim across the 110-mile open ocean from Cuba to Florida. Annette Bening takes on the titular role while Foster features as Nyad’s coach and friend, Bonnie Stoll. Foster arguably has the meatier role out of the two as the entire climax of the film features Bening’s Nyad swimming, largely without dialogue. That leaves Foster’s Stoll as the narrative anchor and the actress delivers a supporting turn that feels like a co-lead (this is something Oscar voters love in this category but we’ll get back to that later). Critics love Foster’s performance, too.

Peter Debruge (Variety) observed: “Foster proves a...

The Only Major Actors Still Alive From 1979's Alien
Image
"Alien" is a watershed horror and science-fiction film; many have tried to recapture its foreboding magic but director Ridley Scott is confident no one can beat his classic.

The film follows the seven-person crew of the space mining vessel Nostromo; in the 22nd century, space travel is the job of regular working Joes. They pick up a distress signal and, in investigating, pick up an eighth passenger: the titular beast, a phallic and half-cybernetic horror spawned from a human (specifically John Hurt's Kane) but utterly devoid of humanity. The alien blends into the leaky, industrial hull of the Nostromo, and as it picks off the crew one by one, their goal shifts from destroying it to escaping it.

Next year marks the 45th birthday of "Alien," but it still holds up no matter its age. However, in the decades since its release, more than half the cast has passed on.

Stunning American Werewolf In London Cosplay Includes Multi-Stage Transformation
Image
An American Werewolf in London's legendary werewolf effects by Rick Baker have made it a horror classic and continue to inspire creative people today. Baker's practical effects in the film are considered the crowning achievement of his career and have shaped the history of the horror genre. Baker's work extended beyond the werewolf genre, with his talents being sought after for other classic films and prestigious productions.

Stunning An American Werewolf in London cosplay pays homage to the horror classic’s legendary werewolf transformation effects. The werewolf movie was considered the stuff of old Hollywood when, in 1981, John Landis helped spur a revival of the genre with his London-set horror-comedy starring David Naughton as a man who is bitten by a wolf, and transforms into a beast with the coming of the full moon. Along with a witty script, the hit film featured groundbreaking and highly-influential pre-cgi transformation effects from the iconic Rick Baker.

Gareth Malone’s Drama Short ‘Fly-Tipping’ Poignantly Presents the Turmoil of Losing an Unborn Child
Image
Among the wreckage of an old burnt out car, a blood-soaked mattress is lamentably gotten rid of in Gareth Malone’s hauntingly touching dramatic short Fly-Tipping. Malone, who made the film as part of his Filmmaking Ma at the University of the West of Scotland, quietly immerses the audience in his characters’ struggles with minimal dialogue as he allows the grey scapes and tones of the film to speak for themselves. As Fly-Tipping progresses it’s hard not to battle with intense feelings of empathy, dislike, pity and anger for both of its protagonists but the focus is immovably drawn to Margo, played by Sky Sinclair, who Malone realised was the heart of his film early on in development. Malone wrote the film as a way of exploring his own debates on parenthood and that struggle shines through the emotional tumult depicted within. As Fly-Tipping sets out on the start of its festival journey,...

If Colman Domingo receives 2 Oscar noms like our early odds predict, history says he’ll almost definitely win one
Image
Colman Domingo is having a moment. The veteran actor has been nominated for two Tonys in his career, but lately it’s his on-screen work that has brought him the most attention. He won his first Emmy in 2022 for guesting on “Euphoria.” He received numerous plaudits for his role in the independent film “Zola.” And he has had additional film credits including Oscar winners “If Beale Street Could Talk” and “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom.” Next he could become the 13th performer ever nominated for two Oscars in the same year.

As of this writing, based on the combined predictions of thousands of Gold Derby users, Domingo ranks fourth in our odds for Best Actor for playing the unsung civil rights hero Bayard Rustin in “Rustin.” And he places fifth in our odds for Best Supporting Actor for playing Mister in the upcoming musical adaptation of “The Color Purple.” But we...

Throughout her career, Weaver has received seven Golden Globe Award nominations. In 1988, she made history by winning both the Best Actress in Drama and Best Supporting Actress categories for her outstanding performances in Gorillas in the Mist and Working Girl, respectively. ‘Grylu Sker’ – Icelandic Ghost Story Brings Together Top Talent in the Puppetry and Stop Motion Arenas
Image
Large scale puppets, miniatures and various other all-practical effects will come together for Grylu Sker, an Icelandic ghost story from the creators of The Haunted Swordsman – along with Sjón, co-writer of Robert Eggers’ The Northman – that is now funding on Kickstarter.

The film will even feature a stop motion animation sequence supervised by Oscar-winner Phil Tippett (Mad God), so it’s no surprise that the Kickstarter fund has been a smashing success so far. Running until August 11, over $90,000 of the total $120,000 goal has already been raised!

Billed as a gothic adventure, Grylu Sker is the tale of a lost explorer set in a world of Icelandic folklore written by Tab Murphy and Icelandic author Sjón (co-writer of The Northman). It is a story of an explorer’s fight for survival on a bleak unforgiving island and also a re-imagining of the legendary Icelandic witch Gryla.

Director Kevin McTurk explains, “This...

Ghostbusters Cast & Character Guide
Image
The original Ghostbusters was one of the defining movies of its decade, and its cast comprised some of the biggest stars in comedy at the time. Released to immediate fanfare in 1984, Ghostbusters became a cultural phenomenon and has had a lasting impact as a franchise well into the 21st century through sequels and other media. With its mix of acerbic wit and goofball humor, the movie has its own comedic language that few films have been able to replicate. Ultimately, Ghostbusters shines because of its cast, which represents the cream of the comedy crop of the 1980s.

One of Ghostbusters' strongest elements is its buddy comedy angle, and the assembled cast of ghost-hunting heroes exudes a sense of camaraderie and fun. Outside the main characters of the original Ghostbusters, the movie has a sparse, but well-cast set of supporting players who offer a contrast to the goofy energy of the leads.

Oscars: Andy Nelson Is Third Most Nominated Living Person
Image
Rerecording mixer Andy Nelson extended his Oscar nominations tally to 24 with a pair of noms Tuesday for his work on Baz Luhrmann’s Elvis and Matt Reeves’ The Batman. This extends his record for the most noms in the sound category. Until Tuesday, he also was tied with Randy Newman for the third-most noms among living persons, with 22 noms. He now holds that distinction with 24 .

“It’s completely overwhelming. I’m so honored,” he tells The Hollywood Reporter. “I’m still absorbing it. I’m so proud of the films.” He admits he didn’t watch the live stream but was awake and learned of the nominations when his phone started buzzing.

“I loved being involved in both of them” he says of Elvis, which earned eight nominations including best picture; and The Batman, which was nominated for sound and its visual effects. He admitted, “I feel sad for Baz not getting director,...

Andrew Garfield Eyes Supporting Actor Submission for ‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ (Exclusive)
Image
In order to avoid splitting votes and allow for the possibility of netting two acting nominations this year, Searchlight Pictures will campaign Andrew Garfield’s performance as televangelist Jim Bakker in “The Eyes of Tammy Faye” for supporting actor consideration, based on an invite that was sent to BAFTA voters for an upcoming virtual screening of the film.

Following the biopic’s bow at the Toronto International Film Festival and modest box office receipts, its Oscar prospects have been seemingly on the fringe, but the film, directed by Michael Showalter, could make a roaring comeback during the season. Garfield’s co-star Jessica Chastain, who plays his wife Tammy Faye, will angle for lead actress, and could become a central piece of a competitive race that includes Olivia Colman (“The Lost Daughter”), Penelope Cruz (“Parallel Mothers”) and Kristen Stewart (“Spencer”).

The 38-year-old actor, who graced the cover of Variety‘s TIFF issue last month,...

Sigourney Weaver on Taking a Break From ‘Avatar,’ Reuniting With Kevin Kline for ‘The Good House’

Sigourney Weaver is in a good place. The three-time Oscar nominee, creator of such iconic cinema heroines as Ripley in the Aliens sci-fi franchise, Dian Fossey in the biopic Gorillas in the Mist and Dr. Grace Augustine in James Cameron’s Avatar movies, finds herself, at 71, in high demand.

In addition to the Avatar franchise — she’s wrapped shooting on Avatar 2 and the third installment, with Avatar 4 and 5 in the wings — Weaver has been taking on roles in independent film and on TV, playing a hard-edged publishing boss in 2019 Berlin Film Festival opener My Salinger Year, an all-powerful baddie in ...

‘The Eyes of Tammy Faye’ Might Convert Oscar Voters to the Church of Jessica Chastain and Andrew Garfield
Image
Oscars voters have always loved seeing actors whose startling physical transformations come after countless hours in the makeup chair.

After Renée Zellweger (“Judy”), Marion Cotillard (“La Vie en Rose”) and Charlize Theron (“Monster”) won Oscars for their impressively-altered looks, Jessica Chastain could be on a similar path for her role as the media-loving televangelist Tammy Faye Bakker in Michael Showalter’s “The Eyes of Tammy Faye.” Following a world bow at the Toronto International Film Festival, the Searchlight Pictures dramedy, echoing previous Oscar embraces such as “I, Tonya,” could make Chastain a contender for her third nomination, and could bring in a few other notices if campaigned correctly.

Chastain’s previous Oscar noms came in supporting actress for “The Help” (2011) and actress for “Zero Dark Thirty” (2012). She also serves as one of the producers for the film, along with Kelly Carmichael, Gigi Pritzker and Rachel Shane. While “Tammy Faye” could...

How Lesley Stahl Became the ‘Grandma Badass’ of ’60 Minutes’
Image
Even though she is on the cusp of turning 80, Lesley Stahl is still climbing mountains.

Thirty years ago, the “60 Minutes” correspondent “huffed and puffed for two months to get myself in training” for what she has said was “one of the best days of my life,” a visit with the famous Rwanda mountain primates that were the basis of the 1988 film “Gorillas in the Mist.” Her stamina work at that time didn’t do much for her, she recalls in an interview. “I almost died climbing to find them.” Despite her work, “what I failed to take into account was the altitude. It just did me in. Luckily, there was a porter or a guide who held my hand and basically made sure I didn’t quit or die.”

Stahl recently attempted the feat again for the CBS newsmagazine and managed to find the gorillas and get down the slopes.

Will Bradley Cooper become the 13th double Oscar nominee for acting? Every man who got 2 bids has won
Image
Bradley Cooper quickly racked up eight Oscar nominations over the course of just seven years, but he hasn’t won yet. However, this year he has two chances for acting prizes: Best Actor for Guillermo Del Toro‘s “Nightmare Alley” and Best Supporting Actor for an as yet untitled Paul Thomas Anderson film. Those happen to be our top two Oscar contenders for Best Picture according to our early odds. So could he end up with two nominations? And if so, could he win one or both of them?

See‘A Star is Born’ again at 2022 Oscars? Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper could return to lead acting races

It’s crucial to preface all this by pointing out that Del Toro and Anderson’s films haven’t screened for press or audiences yet, so everything could change once they see the light of day. But with Del Toro hot off...

To a casual listener of AMC Theatres’ Q2 earnings call Thursday, AMC CEO Adam Aron’s short monologue about the 1988 Oscar-nominated drama Gorillas In The Mist may have been seen as a mere aside, another pop culture reference that the movie-loving executive likes to pepper into his earnings calls.

To the community on Reddit’s “WallStreetBets” forum and other online investment communities, it was a flashing red signal that Aron was on their team as they sought to stick it to the hedge funds (and make some money in the process).

Sacha Baron Cohen’s Golden Globes win sets unexpected historic mark
Image
“Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” star Sacha Baron Cohen made history at the Golden Globe Awards on Sunday night, becoming the first actor to win twice for playing the same character in an original film and its sequel.

Cohen took home the Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy award for the “Borat” sequel. He previously won in the same category in 2007 for the first “Borat” film. In addition to Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy, Cohen also accepted the Golden Globe award for Best Musical or Comedy, which “Borat Subseqent Moviefilm” won earlier in the ceremony.

While Cohen is not expected to garner an Academy Award nomination for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm,” he is a top contender in the Best Supporting Actor category at the Oscars. He was nominated in that category as well on Sunday night, but lost to Daniel Kaluuya for “Judas and the Black Messiah.” The other supporting...

Olivia Colman’s perfect Golden Globes record has come to an end
Image
Long live the queen, but not Olivia Colman’s Golden Globes record. The three-time champ suffered her first loss(es) on Sunday night, losing Best TV Drama Actress to Emma Corrin, her co-star on “The Crown,” and Best Film Supporting Actress to Jodie Foster for “The Mauritanian.”

Colman had entered the night with a perfect 3-for-3 record, having garnered Best TV Supporting Actress for “The Night Manager” in 2017, Best Film Comedy/Musical Actress for “The Favourite” in 2019 and Best TV Drama Actress for “The Crown” last year.

Most didn’t expect Colman to maintain her flawless record. She was in second place in the TV drama actress odds, behind Corrin, and in third in the film supporting actress odds, trailing Amanda Seyfried (“Mank”) and Glenn Close (“Hillbilly Elegy”), while Foster was in fourth.

Frances McDormand in Nomadland (2020)
Chadwick Boseman, Olivia Colman and Others Who Could Set Golden Globe Records This Year
Frances McDormand in Nomadland (2020)
This year’s Golden Globe Awards will be singular in a lot of ways, from its live-virtual hybrid to the fact that virtually all of its movie awards will go to films that premiered on VOD or streaming services. In virtually every category, the movie that wins will be the lowest-grossing movie ever to win in that category. You can thank the Covid-inspired theater closings for that.

Here are some other records that might be broken Sunday night:

• If “Nomadland” or “Promising Young Woman” wins Best Motion Picture – Drama, it would be the first movie directed by a woman to win in the category, and the second to win in either of the best-picture categories.

• If Chloe Zhao (“Nomadland”), Regina King (“One Night in Miami”) or Emerald Fennell (“Promising Young Woman”) wins best director, it’ll be the second time that award has gone to a woman, after Streisand for “Yentl.
