The ‘Jurassic’ rebirth that never happened: How an Oscar-nominated screenwriter almost took the franchise in a wild new direction
Image
Jurassic World: Rebirth stomps into theaters this holiday weekend, looking to sink its teeth into the July 4 box office and revitalize a franchise that even the most dedicated dino-heads would agree is starting to feel a little prehistoric. Starring Scarlett Johansson, Jonathan Bailey, and Mahershala Ali, the seventh film in the Jurassic series unfolds on a new island where dinosaurs roam freely... and humans are prey.

While the Rebirth reviews are mixed, the movie posted a $28 million opening day, with a projected $127.5 million gross over the four-day weekend. The Rotten Tomatoes audience scores are also coming in a smidgen higher than the Tomatometer, indicating that these digitally enhanced dinosaurs continue to be a big summer movie draw.

But Jurassic still seems like a franchise in need of some fresh creative DNA. And, as it happens, a bold new direction emerged in the early 2000s from an unlikely source — Oscar-nominated screenwriter...

Pete Rose & 1919 Black Sox Eligible For Baseball Hall Of Fame After MLB Commissioner’s Ruling
Image
Pete Rose, one of baseball’s greatest baseball players who was banned from the sport for life in 1989, will finally be eligible for the Baseball Hall of Fame after a ruling handed down Tuesday by the commissioner of Major League Baseball.

Rob Manfred ruled that MLB’s policy shall be that “permanent ineligibility ends upon the passing of the disciplined individual.” Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader and a 17-time All-Star, died in September at age 83.

The ruling was spurred by an application by Rose’s lawyer and family, and came about as Rose was the first player banned after the tenure of baseball’s first commissioner, Kenesaw Mountain Landis — who originated the rule of no gambling in baseball in 1921 — to die while still on the list.

Rose was banned from the game in 1989 after an investigation found he bet on games — a violation of MLB’s Rule 21 — while manager of the Cincinnati Reds,...

The Howling (1981) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
Not all of the classic Universal Monsters were based on classic stories. While Frankenstein and Dracula came from the minds of Mary Shelley and Bram Stoker, The Wolfman, and previously Werewolf of London, was based on folklore dating back centuries rather than fiction. While the character has had a hard time coming back into the limelight with the disappointing Wolfman from 2010 and even more disappointing Wolf Man from 2025, the myth has done well for itself even while not being as in the public favor as the Zombie or Vampire. Those original films may not be based on books but that didn’t stop writers from creating their own stories or studios from adapting them. This includes the likes of Hammer Studios Curse of the Werewolf being adapted from The Werewolf of Paris and The Wolfen getting turned into the 1981 movie Wolfen. Speaking of 1981, there were two other rather small werewolf...

Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin & Samantha Morton Set Voyage For Christopher Nolan’s ‘The Odyssey’
Image
Christopher Nolan’s next big epic at Universal, The Odyssey, has added Himesh Patel, Elliot Page, Bill Irwin and Samantha Morton.

For Patel, Page and Irwin, it’s a reteam with the 2x Oscar-winning filmmaker. Patel starred in Nolan’s 2020 Tenet, Page in 2010’s Inception, and Irwin in 2014’s Interstellar. For 2x Oscar nominee Morton, it’s her first time working with Nolan.

The foursome join a booming ensemble that counts Matt Damon, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Zendaya, Robert Pattinson, Lupita Nyong’o, Benny Safdie and Charlize Theron.

Nolan’s mythic action epic, shot with new Imax cameras, is based on the ancient Greek poem by Homer which follows Odysseus, King of Ithaca, and his perilous journey home after the Trojan War. The classic explores themes of heroism, loyalty, cunning and the struggle against divine will. The tale includes iconic stories like Odysseus’ encounters with the Cyclops Polyphemus, the Sirens and the witch-goddess Circe,...

This Underrated Western Turned a Fan-Favorite '90s Star Into a Ruthless Villain
Image
John Cusack has always been a fascinating actor, as he has consistently been able to reinvent himself by appearing in wildly different genres. Cusack started off his career as a teen heartthrob of sorts with his charismatic performances in the coming-of-age classics Better Off Dead and Say Anything, yet was able to make the transition into more serious roles in The Grifters and Eight Men Out. The next decade offered Cusack the opportunity to be more self-aware with satirical roles in the dark comedies Being John Malkovich and High Fidelity. Unfortunately, his career has somewhat floundered within the past few years. More often than not, Cusack has gone the same route as Nicolas Cage or John Travolta, in that many of his films have been released direct-to V-d or streaming. Although it is a bit disappointing that a great actors talents are being wasted, Cusack gave the most menacing performance...

Story of Law & Order Actor Jack Merrill Getting Abducted by Serial Killer John Wayne Gacy Will Give You Chills
Image
Known for roles in Law & Order and Eight Men Out, actor Jack Merrill recently revealed a terrifying incident from his life that had a profound impact on him. The actor kept this horrific experience a secret for years, sharing it with just a few close friends. Only lately did Merrill find the courage to talk about his experience after decades of putting the memory aside.

Jack Merrill disclosed recently about the notorious serial killer John Wayne Gacy, who killed and r*ped more than thirty young men and boys in the Chicago area in the 1970s, kidnapped and abused him when he was a young man.

Jack Merrill lived in a not-so-happy-home

Even though Jack Merrill was raised in a big, seemingly happy home in Evanston, Illinois, his early years were challenging. His father, Jerome Holtzman, was a prominent sportswriter credited with creating the baseball “save” statistic.

Actor Jack Merrill Recounts Being Abducted & Sexually Assaulted As A Teen By Serial Killer John Wayne Gacy
Image
Hollywood is seemingly obsessed with serial killer stories, and one veteran actor is now relating his own, all-too real encounter with John Wayne Gacy.

Jack Merrill, whose decades-long career includes parts in Eight Men Out, Law & Order, Sex and the City, Grey’s Anatomy, Numb3rs and Hannah Montana, wrote this week about surviving abduction and rape at the hands of Gacy, a serial killer who sometimes dressed as a clown and who authorities say sexually assaulted and murdered at least 33 young men and boys.

Merrill says his assault happened in 1978, when he was 19.

“One night,” he writes for People, “I was walking home. A guy pulled over and said, ‘Do you want to go for a ride?'”

Merrill recalls that he accepted, only to be drugged and dragged to Gacy’s home.

“He put this homemade contraption around my neck,” writes the actor. “It had ropes and pulleys, and...

“You are practically dating a younger version of your mother?”: Charlie Sheen Was a Class Act in One Legendary Two and a Half Men Episode That Was the Funniest Portrayal of Oedipus Complex
Image
Two and a Half Men, with its witty and hilarious quips, quickly rose to the ranks of being one of the most popular sitcoms. Created by the legendary Chuck Lorre, the show presented Charlie Sheen as Charlie Harper and Jon Cryer as Alan. The show mostly revolved around their relationship and banter, as well as Charlie Harper’s several love interests.

The jingle writer was quite popular among the ladies and dated several beautiful women on the show. One, however, reflected a major Oedipus complex on the character’s part, given that he was literally dating the younger version of his mother, Evelyn Harper.

‘A League Of Their Own’ Baseball Field Goes Up In Flames
Image
A little piece of Hollywood history is gonna. The baseball field where A League Of Their Own and several other movies were filmed was decimated in a fire overnight. Just before midnight on Thursday, it was reportedly engulfed in flames. The 1930s ballpark was unable to be saved and there is an investigation underway. Here are the details.

Jay Littleton Ball Park Goes Up In Flames

Local reports say that the fire started at the Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario, California around 11:30 p.m. Firefighters responded to the scene, but the historic ballpark was already engulfed in flames.

The fire seemed to originate from the stadium and dugout, which was featured in films like A League Of Their Own. Unfortunately, nothing could be done to save the ballpark.

Photos from the scene showed the fire tearing through the stadium as firefighters attempted to put it out. It still...

Fire Destroys Historic Baseball Park Where ‘A League Of Their Own’ & Other Movies Were Shot
Image
Tom Hanks’ A League of Their Own character famously said, “There’s no crying in baseball,” but folks might make an exception today. A baseball park east of Los Angeles that has been a popular filming location for movies and TV shows was badly damaged in a fire overnight.

Along with the Penny Marshall-directed 1992 pic that starred Hanks, Geena Davis, Rosie O’Donnell, Madonna and Lori Petty, the park also has hosted film shoots for such features as the 1988 Charlie Sheen-John Cusack Black Sox movie Eight Men Out and the 1992 biopic The Babe starring John Goodman as Babe Ruth. It also has been used for numerous TV commercials, the city said.

The blaze was reported around 11:30 p.m. Thursday at Jay Littleton Ball Park in Ontario. An Ontario Fire Department spokesperson told Key News Network that the fire was fully involved when the crews reached to the scene.

“We thought it was funny – he didn’t”: Charlie Sheen Had Such an Extravagant Condition When Two and a Half Men Wanted Him to Return That the Show Had to Say No
Image
Charlie Sheen rose to prominence in the 80s with successful films such as Platoon, Red Dawn, Wall Street, and Eight Men Out. The actor proved that he had the dramatic chops that elevated the material he was given. By the time the 2000s rolled in, he started appearing in comedic roles, replacing Michael J. Fox as the lead of Spin City.

The actor then went on to star in the beloved sitcom Two and a Half Men and played his iconic role, Charlie Harper. After appearing in 8 seasons, Sheen was fired from the show after he made disparaging remarks regarding the show’s producer Chuck Lorre in 2011. The actor had a wild condition for his return when Lorre approached him to appear in the series finale.

Every summer, The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences invites a deluge of new members to join its ranks. As usual, a slew of Oscar nominees and winners are gaining admittance to the club (71 Oscar nominees and 19 winners), including actors Lily Gladstone (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), Sandra Hüller, and Da’Vine Joy Randolph (“The Holdovers”), costume designer Holly Waddington...

‘Eephus’ Review: An Existential Baseball Comedy That’s Less About the Game Than a Dying Pastime
Image
Most baseball movies are not, per se, about baseball. To take some examples: The Natural is about a prodigy overcoming trauma; Eight Men Out is about greed and corruption; Bad News Bears is a foul-mouthed coming-of-age flick; Bull Durham is all about Kevin Costner’s sex appeal; Moneyball carries the sport into the information age; and Field of Dreams (Costner, again) is haunted by the ghosts of baseball past.

First-time director Carson Lund clearly had this in mind when he made his feature debut Eephus, a movie steeped in nostalgia for the game itself, as well as what it represents for a bunch of men past their prime: the long afternoons in the sun, the trash-talking at the plate, the brewskies in the cooler and the kind of camaraderie you can only find in the dugout.

In many ways, this existential and increasingly surreal indie effort, which seems to be...

The story of Beowulf and Grendel is one of the most famous stories in English literature. The epic Beowulf is one of the most important works of English literature in general and it has been an inspiration for many authors over the centuries. John Sayles, ‘City of Hope,’ and the Hope for Cinema’s Preservation
Image
Despite not having made a film of his own since 2013 (the under-appreciated “Go for Sisters”), John Sayles is having quite the year. In January, his 1996 neo-Western mystery film “Lone Star” entered the Criterion Collection with a 4K Uhd edition that features interviews with director of photography Stuart Dryburgh, as well as an interview with Sayles himself conducted by “El Norte” director Gregory Nava.

Then in April, his largely unavailable 1991 inner-city saga “City of Hope” received the Blu-ray release many fans had been pining for since a restoration was screened at Sundance in 2016 for the 25th anniversary. Adding to this newfound availability of quality copies of his work, a large number of Sayles’ films are currently streaming for free on apps like Tubi, Kanopy, and Pluto TV, as well as cost-based apps like AMC+, Starz, and Prime Video.

At no other point in his career has his library of work been...

This ‘90s Matthew McConaughey Western Is Also a Sharp Crime Thriller
Image
There are few great American filmmakers who have been as consistently undervalued as John Sayles, a quiet maverick filmmaker whose remarkable deconstruction of quintessential archetypes of “Americana” made him one of the most exciting of the 1990s. Sayles has a fascinating approach to traditional “American” genres, as he tends to deconstruct the facades behind them, yet still celebrates the beauty of the character. Eight Men Out is a baseball film that dramatizes one of the most famous conspiracies within the history of the sport, yet still celebrates virtues such as honor, respect, and loyalty.

Ged Dickersin To Launch Production Company True Indy With Aim Of Empowering Independent Cinema
Image
Exclusive: Brooklyn-based filmmaker Ged Dickersin (Coda) is launching True Indy, a production company intent on making films that can and should be made independently, with filmmakers telling acutely relevant stories for the world market.

True Indy sees the opportunity to attract financing for films that can be made in the $1 million-$5 million range, reducing the financial risk to investors and increasing the chances for a return on the investment. The company is introducing its slate of original U.S.-born indies at the upcoming European Film Market in Berlin, as well as looking to partner with filmmakers from around the world in international co-productions.

“Independent filmmaking has developed so much, with budgets that exceed what the new world market can return, making it difficult for private equity to support the independents,” Dickersin said. “Coming out of the pandemic and the strikes, the cost of making a film has inflated drastically,...

The B-Side – In Conversation with John Sayles

Today we’re honored to chat with iconic director John Sayles, whose essential crime epic Lone Star is now available from The Criterion Collection in both 4K Uhd + Blu-ray.

Our B-Sides today include Limbo, Amigo, and Go For Sisters. We also discuss Sayles’ parallel careers as a screenwriter and a novelist. He talks about the work he did on the Toshirô Mifune/Scott Glenn actioner The Challenge (director John Frankenheimer asking him to write new draft over a weekend before an impending strike); he discusses what he learned working for Roger Corman early in his career; which genre he’s still itching to direct; his love of the recent Godzilla Minus One; and the slew of scripts that never got made.

John Sayles Looks Back on the Making of ‘Lone Star’
Image
John Sayles has made a career out of writing and directing some of the finest ensemble films of all time, movies like “Matewan,” “Eight Men Out,” and “Sunshine State” that create rich tapestries of American life filled with intimate detail and epic sweep. One of his most entertaining and sophisticated works, the 1996 contemporary Western “Lone Star,” is newly available in 4K and Blu-ray editions from Criterion, and it has, like most of Sayles’ movies, only improved with age. As a Texas sheriff investigates an old murder, the film becomes timeless and specifically of its era (particularly in the border crossing scenes conceived and shot before the wall that eventually went up in Sayles’ location), a complex consideration of cultural conflicts and generational divides that seem hardwired into the American consciousness.

It’s a great American epic, yet like all of the director’s films it was shot on a modest...

There’s a lot to watch on Prime Video in October and, as you may have guessed, there’s spooky stuff galore in amongst Prime’s usual rotation of extensive library content.

In the movie Totally Killer, Chilling Adventures of Sabrina star Kiernan Shipka travels back in time to the 1980s to stop a serial killer. Then there’s Make Me Scream, a Halloween special that challenges celebrities to “a gruesome game of terror.” Renfield will also be streaming on the service for anyone who’s been dying (muahahaha!) to catch the Nic Cage Dracula film.

Every Real Baseball Player Portrayed In Field Of Dreams
Image
Field of Dreams is a classic baseball movie, and its dramatic story depicts a lineup packed with legendary players from the pastime's rich history.
