Uma Thurman Saved Stephen Frears’ 1988 Film from Becoming Sarah Jessica Parker’s Mess
Image
If there is one person that you can count on during the production of a film, it is Uma Thurman. The actress has become known for embodying stage presence; it is difficult for her not to leave an impression on the audience, even if she is in a supporting or insignificant role. This seems to have been the case even before she gained a name for herself, leaving lasting impressions on her audience and producers.

While many believe that Quentin Tarantino kick-started her iconic career in the film industry, the true origins can be traced almost a decade before she starred in 1994’s Pulp Fiction. More specifically, Thurman first played a notable role in 1988’s Dangerous Liaisons, helmed by British director Stephen Frears.

However, it would seem that this role almost went to several other actresses, all of whom could not have done what Thurman did.

Sarah Jessica Parker was...

Hollywood’s Uncrowned: 10 Extraordinary Actors Still Waiting for Their Oscar
Image
The Academy Awards, colloquially known as the Oscars, are widely regarded as the “pinnacle of an actor’s career” and the “most prestigious awards in the film industry globally.” To receive that coveted golden statuette is often seen as the “ultimate seal of approval from the film industry”, a profound acknowledgment from peers that an actor’s dedication and artistry culminated in a performance “so impactful that they felt motivated to crown you the best in your category”. This singular honor signifies a level of performance few achieve.

Despite this immense prestige, a surprising number of Hollywood’s most revered talents, actors who have consistently delivered “exemplary work year after year”, have found themselves repeatedly “passed over” for a competitive acting Oscar. This recurring phenomenon is often viewed by film enthusiasts and critics alike as a “crime of art and good taste”.

This exploration celebrates the careers of ten such luminaries,...

More Than ‘1944’, Another Taylor Sheridan Yellowstone Spinoff Has My Attention for Casting a DC Legend in the Lead Role
Image
Taylor Sheridan’s Yellowstone universe has continued to expand on the heels of its massive success, with a slate of sequels and prequels currently in the works. And as much as fans are looking forward to its next chapter, 1944, with its dramatic backdrop of World War II reshaping the Dutton legacy, there’s another project that’s grabbed my attention even more.

And it’s not just about rugged ranch life or generational drama this time, it’s about a casting choice. I’m talking about The Madison, the upcoming spinoff featuring none other than Michelle Pfeiffer. What is the upcoming Yellowstone spinoff, The Madison, about?

Nearly a year ago, Paramount announced that Michelle Pfeiffer would lead a new spinoff set within the Yellowstone universe, titled The Madison. She will...

Michelle Pfeiffer movies: 15 greatest films ranked worst to best
Image
Michelle Pfeiffer is a three-time Oscar nominee who has starred in a variety of classics in her long career, excelling at everything from comedy to drama, romance and action. Take a look back at 15 of her greatest films, ranked worst to best.

Pfeiffer has had a 40+-year career on screen and has managed to overcome being known at first just for her looks. While her beauty was prominently on display in many of her first roles she quickly became more than just a pretty face and plunged herself into deeper and more complex roles. Pfeiffer’s first professional acting job was on a TV series version of the film “Animal House” called “Delta House.” Her character on the TV show was referred to simply as “The Bombshell.” This debut hardly signaled the arrival of an actress good enough to someday earn three Oscar nominations and seven Golden Globe nominations along with one win.

Netflix Reveals Steamy K-Drama Adaptation of ‘Dangerous Liaisons’
Image
Netflix has lined up its next high-profile Korean drama series — and this one could get steamy. Currently given the working title Scandals, the show will be an adaptation of the 2003 Korean film Untold Scandal, which reimagined the promiscuous world of the classic French novel Dangerous Liaisons within the context of Korea’s Joseon era. The show will be led by a star-studded cast including Son Ye-jin (Crash Landing on You), Ji Chang-wook (Welcome to Samdal-ri) and Nana, aka Im Jina (Mask Girl). It has already started shooting in Seoul, South Korea.

Directed by K-drama mainstay Jung Ji-woo (Somebody, Tune in for Love), Scandals revolves around a daring and dangerous love game between the remarkable, high-born Lady Cho (Son) and Cho Won (Ji), the era’s greatest playboy —with the conflicted young widow Hui-yeon (Nana) unknowingly entangled in the middle.

A sumptuous re-creation of Korea’s Joseon era, Scandals “brings to...

Why Are Frankenstein Movies Suddenly Hot Again in Hollywood?
Image
More than 200 years after “Frankenstein” was published, Mary Shelley has never been hotter. The hulking character that the Gothic novelist conjured up — half man, half beast, all monster — will feature prominently in two upcoming movies from A-list directors that debut mere months apart.

The first, “Frankenstein,” is courtesy of Guillermo del Toro, a master of the macabre whose credits include “The Shape of Water” and “Crimson Peak.” It launches on Netflix in November and stars Mia Goth and Oscar Isaac. The second, “The Bride,” will be directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, who is following up her acclaimed feature directing debut, “The Lost Daughter,” with a $90 million creature feature inspired by “The Bride of Frankenstein.” Warner Bros. will open this one in theaters on March 6, 2026 with Jessie Buckley and Christian Bale playing the undead couple. It was originally slated to debut on September 26, 2025, but the studio pushed it back this week, giving...

Image
A household name after starring in Korean epics like Taegukgi: Brotherhood of War and Friend, Jang Dong-gun has been part of the explosive growth of the Korean film industry and has worked with a lengthy, star-studded list of talent over the last three decades.

Glenn Close movies: 17 greatest films, ranked worst to best
Image
Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”

Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.

Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman's performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

'Cruel Intentions' Canceled at Prime Video After One Season
Image
Amazon has dealt a cruel blow to fans of the teen drama remake of Cruel Intentions by shelving the series after a single season. Fans of the 1999 movie had been quite on board with this new take on the story, although critics panned it as another unnecessary rehash of a popular franchise that failed to capture anything that made the movie a cult classic.

According to Variety, Cruel Intentions, which took more than three years to make it from its original pitch to screens on Prime Video in November 2024, failed to land a place in the streaming Top 10 during its run, which is probably the biggest reason for its cancelation, but no doubt the dismal 24% from critics didn’t help its cause.

For those who have not seen the series, the synopsis reads, "Following the elite students of Manchester College, a Washington, D.C.-adjacent university, where reputation means everything,...

‘Cruel Intentions’ Canceled at Prime Video After One Season
Image
“Cruel Intentions” will not be returning to Prime Video.

Prime Video has opted not to renew “Cruel Intentions” for a second season, an individual with knowledge told TheWrap. The news comes just under four months after “Cruel Intentions” first launched on Prime Video in November.

The series, which was led by “The White Lotus” star Sarah Catherine Hook, reimagined the 1999 cult classic film of the same name as well as 1988’s “Dangerous Liaisons,” except this time the tale took place in collegiate Greek life.

Hook starred as Caroline Merteuil, who made a deal with her step-brother, Lucien Belmont (Zac Burgess), for Lucien to seduce naive newcomer and daughter of the VP, Annie Grover (Savannah Lee Smith), in order to sway her to join Caroline’s sorority as a way to shield her chapter from an ongoing hazing scandal. If Lucien was successful, Caroline promised him that she would give him what he really wanted: her.

TCM Classic Film Festival to Honor Michelle Pfeiffer With Hand and Footprint Ceremony
Image
Fans of Michelle Pfeiffer will get an opportunity to celebrate wildly — let’s call that “makin’ whoopee” — when she leaves her handprints and footprints in cement at the Tcl Chinese Theatre next month.

The ceremony will take place during the April 24-27 TCM Classic Film Festival, it was announced Thursday.

One of Pfeiffer’s most unforgettable performances — that of smoldering lounge singer Susie Diamond in The Fabulous Baker Boys (1989), for which she received the second of her three career Oscar nominations — will be showcased at the 16th annual event as well. (Watch her in that film on the piano, and we do mean On the piano, here.)

“There’s an undeniable quality to any part played by Michelle Pfeiffer,” TCM host Ben Mankiewicz said in a statement. “She blends — seemingly effortlessly (though it surely isn’t effortless) — elegance with depth, capturing the complexity in every character she plays.

28 Years Later, This Portrayal of a Classic Batman Villain is Still the Best Thing About 1 of DC's Worst Films
Image
Quick LinksPoison Ivy Is One of the Few Bright Spots of Batman & RobinWhy Uma Thurman Was the Perfect Choice to Play Poison IvyUma Thurman Has No Regrets About Starring in Batman & Robin

Batman & Robin is often considered to be one of DC’s worst films, but years later, some fans have warmed up to it, seeing it as an attempt to try and recapture the campiness of the '60s Adam West era in a more modern setting. Many of the actors, including George Clooney, have since apologized for participating in the film, and it was obvious that many of them didn’t know how to handle Joel Schumacher's more lighthearted take on the material. When it comes to Uma Thurman as Poison Ivy, on the other hand, it’s a much different story. Watching it now, it's clear just how much fun she’s having in the role,...

The Oscars Stopped Being Relevant Long Ago, but if Ralph Fiennes Loses Best Actor We Know How Incompetent the Voters Really Are
Image
The Academy Awards were once the gold standard of cinematic excellence. Since then, they have spiraled into a glittery, self-important popularity contest. Now, merit takes a backseat to politics, nostalgia, and the inexplicable desire to award the most Oscar-bait performance of the year.

It’s a chaotic mix of questionable snubs, undeserving wins, and choices so baffling they make you wonder if the voters are watching the same movies as the rest of us.

Ralph Fiennes in Conclave | Credits: Focus Features

Ralph Fiennes, a man who has spent his entire career delivering performances so layered, so mesmerizing, that he should have at least three Oscars on his shelf by now. And yet, despite decades of brilliance, the Academy continues to treat him like a second-tier actor instead of the acting powerhouse he is. But this year? This year should be different.

Ralph Fiennes has been snubbed by the Academy before...

‘Miss Scarlet’ Finale: How Do You Feel About That Eliza-Blake Ending? (Poll)
Image
[Warning: The following contains Major spoilers for the Miss Scarlet Season 5 finale, “Dangerous Liaisons.”] Miss Scarlet Season 5 was a season of change. The formerly titular Duke, William (Stuart Martin), departed the series after Season 4, and Tom Durant-Pritchard joined the cast as the by-the-book detective Alexander Blake, who wasn’t keen to let private detective Eliza Scarlet (Kate Phillips) work out of Scotland Yards. Eliza pursued her work anyway, putting her in close proximity to Blake throughout the season’s six episodes. They grew on each other as the season progressed, leading to a moment in the finale that wasn’t a long-time coming per se but a major development for Eliza. The February 16 finale featured a dangerous case that saw Oliver Fitzroy (Evan McCabe) attacked. As Blake and his men worked to solve the mystery, Eliza was hired by Oliver’s mother. Marianne Fitzroy (Robin Weaver), to investigate his father, Commissioner Fitzroy (Stephen Boxer), whom she suspected was being unfaithful.

‘Back In Action’ Cast And Characters Guide
Image
Netflix’s latest action comedy, Back In Action, boasts a stacked cast filled with heavyweight actors, but unfortunately, like numerous such forgettable Ott ventures, their talents are completely wasted by an unimaginative script. The movie focuses on a spy couple who leave their old life to turn a new page and decide to settle for a peaceful family life, only for the situation to spiral out of control and drag them back into the game. Instead of trying something new with this age-old premise, the movie mostly depends on nostalgia pandering through extremely dated characterization, which is seemingly drawn straight out of unfunny sitcoms. The makers perhaps intended the tone to be family friendly, but the way they went about it turned the movie into something that feels more like a caricature than an organic venture. There is a possibility that a sequel entry gets made, given there are several...

You Can Watch John Malkovich Play a Bombastic Mentalist in One of His Most Underrated Movies for Free
Image
I mean the following statement as a 100% compliment: the thing that makes John Malkovich such a great actor is that his characters always seem a little deranged. Not deranged in a dangerous and sociopathic way, but in a way where he can seem to be possessed by a mad persuasion about anything his characters say, no matter how outlandish it may be. He's used that short-tempered conviction to play so many great villains, like in Dangerous Liaisons and Con Air. However, one of his best roles saw him use it to play a relatively more genteel and benevolent figure, as the title character of The Great Buck Howard, a tribute to the mentalist profession produced by (and featuring) America's kindest movie magician, Tom Hanks.
