Robert De Niro‘s latest movie, “The Alto Knights,” gives the Oscar winner twice as many roles as usual. Directed by Barry Levinson and written by “Goodfellas” writer Nicholas Pileggi, the film charts the real-life power struggle between 1950s Mafia bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello as it spirals into an all-out, blood-on-the-streets conflict. De Niro plays both Genovese and Costello in the drama, which also stars Debra Messing and “Shōgun” breakout Cosmo Jarvis.
De Niro is not the first major actor in Hollywood history to take on the sizable challenge of playing more than one role in a film. Some have even dared to take on more than two In honor of De Niro’s dual turns in “The Alto Knights,” though, here are five other great films that also star actors in two roles.

Is there a kernel of truth to the notion that "popcorn stars" don't win Oscars? It certainly felt that way to fans hoping to see Demi Moore pull off a Best Actress victory at the 2025 Oscars. Her daring performance as Elisabeth Sparkle in The Substance had earned her a Golden Globe, Critics Choice, and SAG Award, putting her in frontrunner position as she arrived at the 97th Academy Awards on March 2. But suddenly, those hopes were dashed when Emma Stone read out the winner: Mikey Madison in Anora.
It wasn't unfamiliar to see one of the biggest box-office draws from decades past lose the big one. Perhaps the Academy couldn't see past what Moore had once been told she was — a popcorn actress. She addressed the demeaning title in her Golden Globes acceptance speech nearly two months prior, stating that a producer called her a “popcorn actress” 30 years ago, which...

Clue may not be one of the best mystery movies of all time, but it's certainly one of the funniest. It's based on the board game Clue, in which players try to find out who killed Mr. Boddy and end the game by identifying the murderer, the weapon, and the room in which the murder took place. Director Jonathan Lynn (who would later direct My Cousin Vinny) co-wrote the screenplay with John Landis, who also co-wrote and directed comedy classics including The Blues Brothers and Coming to America. With those two behind the script, the result is a movie that's absolutely packed with hilarious one-liners that often come out of nowhere. This may be a whodunit, but the genre is largely just an excuse to make a ton of jokes.

Though the summer movie season of 1988 would not officially begin until the May 20 opening of Ron Howard and George Lucas' "Willow," movie buffs hungry for spectacle after enduring an unusually weak spring (led by Tim Burton's "Beetlejuice" and Oscar-winning holdovers like "The Last Emperor" and "Moonstruck") were eagerly looking forward weeks in advance of this kickoff and wondering which of the studios' big-ticket offerings would satisfy as wholly as "The Untouchables," "RoboCop," and "Predator" had done the previous year. Amid the glut of mostly unpromising sequels, there were two seemingly sure things (Robert Zemeckis' "Who Framed Roger Rabbit" and the Eddie Murphy vehicle "Coming to America") and a smattering of originals toplined by some of the biggest stars in the industry.
And then there was "Die Hard."
As you likely know, John McTiernan's classic was initially viewed by some as a looming folly based on 20th Century Fox...

There are a handful of book series that are geared towards girls and young women that have managed to really stand the test of time, like the always-fun "The Baby-Sitters Club," and one of the great classics, "Little House on the Prairie." The semi-autobiographical novels by Laura Ingalls Wilder followed her family as they made their lives on a tiny farmstead near Plum Creek and the town of Walnut Grove, Minnesota, from the 1870s through the 1890s. The beloved novels were turned into a TV movie and then a television series by NBC, starring Michael Landon as patriarch Charles Ingalls, Karen Grassle as his wife Caroline, Melissa Gilbert as middle daughter Laura, Melissa Sue Anderson as Laura's older sister Mary, and twins Lindsay and Sidney Greenbush as younger sister Carrie Ingalls. The series ran for nine seasons, from 1974 through 1983, giving audiences nearly a decade to get to know the Ingalls...

After a lengthy hiatus, Netflix’s spy series “The Recruit” is back for season 2, and it’s bringing a few new faces with it.
Don’t worry, we’re still with the characters that fans have come to know and love. It’s just that, this season, Owen Hendricks’ (Noah Centineo) antics take us to South Korea, after he was kidnapped at the end of last season. And that means a whole new set of spies (and potentially enemies).
Here’s who you need to know and remember in “The Recruit’s” Season 2 cast.

By the start of the 1990s, Eddie Murphy had transcended his origins as a standup comedy genius to become one of the biggest stars in Hollywood. Having grown used to relying on his motormouth shtick with classics like 48 Hours and Beverly Hills Cop, Murphy sought to evolve how audiences saw him on-screen. After the smash success of Coming to America, where he'd first unveiled his talent for playing multiple characters in one film, Murphy cooked up a film that would show him in a brand-new light and pair him with a cadre of prominent Black talent, including an up-and-coming Halle Berry. That film was the unfairly maligned Boomerang.

George Folsey Jr., the longtime producer and film editor for director John Landis, has died at the age of 85, according to his family.
The son of 13-time Oscar-nominated cinematographer George J. Folsey, whose credits included “Meet Me in St. Louis” and “Forbidden Planet,” Folsey Jr. got his start in editing at Kabc in Los Angeles, where he edited documentaries and news reports for broadcast in the 1960s.
He then moved into cinema by learning the trade at MGM, where his father had worked, alongside “Grand Prix” Oscar-winning editor Henry Berman. His first feature film project was Alexander Singer’s “Glass Houses,” a 1972 film in which Folsey was editor, cinematographer and producer.
A year later, Folsey was hired to edit John Landis’ debut feature film “Schlock,” a sendup of “King Kong” in which an ape man chased out of his cave wanders into a Southern California neighborhood and develops an unrequited crush on a teen girl.

While the doctors were normally the stars of House, in season 6, episode 4, "The Tyrant," James Earl Jones plays a one-off character that stole the episode and changed the course of the entire show. House had many actors make cameo appearances, and Jones played a character that was completely against type. Jones' character was President Dibala of an unnamed African country, who Dr. Allison Cameron (Jennifer Morrison) calls "one of the most repressive dictators in the world."
Dr. Robert Chase (Jesse Spencer) and Cameron are happily married and, while still part of the cast of House, they no longer work for House directly, but they are asked to help on Dibala's case. This causes Chase and Cameron a lot of ethical stress, because Dibala is accused of repressing an ethnic rebellion through genocide, and initially, Cameron finds treating him reprehensible but Chase finds it "interesting." With future seasons of Sylvester Stallone's popular crime drama Tulsa King confirmed, a show in which he plays the head of a mafia family, we can't help but be reminded of one of the actor's earlier portrayals of a gangster. By 1991, Sylvester Stallone had already starred in five Rocky movies and three Rambo flicks, cementing himself as a bona fide action star who seemed most at home on screen when he was hitting something — or rather, someone. This is part of the reason why it was so shocking when his next project was as the lead role in Oscar, a comedy from one of the great filmmakers of the genre, director John Landis.

The incomparable Eddie Murphy has been a staple on both the big and small screen since skyrocketing to superstardom on Saturday Night Live in the early 1980s, with the talented comedian and actor going on to star in a slew of fan-favorite hits like Trading Places, Beverly Hills Cop, Coming to America, and the beloved Shrek franchise. The recipient of numerous accolades like a Golden Globe and Primetime Emmy, Murphy is one of Hollywood's most respected and illustrious performers, but there is one award he hasn't nabbed: an Oscar.
Though Murphy was nominated for the award for his impressive work in the musical Dreamgirls, he has yet to take home the prestigious statuette, a fact that Ryan Reynolds believes is downright shameful. In fact, the Deadpool star feels that Murphy's side-splitting performances in the '90s sci-fi comedy The Nutty Professor was worthy of winning the coveted Oscar, as he...

Jim Abrahams, a film director and writer behind hit slapstick comedies like “Airplane!,” “Hot Shots!,” the “Naked Gun” series and more, died Tuesday, his son Joseph confirmed to Variety. He was 80.
With his childhood friends Jerry and David Zucker, Abrahams formed the filmmaking trio, called Zucker, Abrahams and Zucker, and popularized the spoof genre of the 1980s.
“Jim Abrahams redefined the boundaries of humor through groundbreaking works like ‘Airplane!’ and ‘The Naked Gun’ series. Together with Jerry and David Zucker, he transformed satire into an art form, inspiring generations of comedians and filmmakers and leaving an indelible mark on the world of comedy,” said the National Comedy Center executive director Journey Gunderson in a statement.

It's been quite a ride for Cuba Gooding Jr. When we first saw him, he was just a goofy-looking 20-year-old kid trying to keep a straight face as Eddie Murphy and Arsenio Hall yukked it up as heavily made-up (by the great Rick Baker) old-timers at a Queens barbershop in "Coming to America." Three years later, he was the lead of John Singleton's groundbreaking drama "Boyz n the Hood," which launched him to big-screen stardom. Or should have, anyway. Instead, Hollywood relegated him to thankless supporting roles in crap like "Lightning Jack" and "Outbreak" until he finally got another role worthy of his talent in Cameron Crowe's "Jerry Maguire." As Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Rod Tidwell, Gooding did the sports world a service by demonstrating that uniquely talented individuals fighting to maximize their earnings before said talent fades are not the enemy; it's the business that fights hard...

Sometime in the 2000s, comedian Eddie Murphy began experiencing a career slump that, quite sadly, would remain with him for years. Ron Underwood's 2002 sci-fi comedy "The Adventures of Pluto Nash" was a notorious bomb, making only $7.1 million on a $100 million budget. Murphy's cinematic update of "I Spy" from the same year also lost money, and Murphy turned to making mediocre but popular kiddie flicks like "The Haunted Mansion" and "Daddy Day Care" to make ends meet.
In 2006, Murphy received an Academy Award nomination for his performance in "Dreamgirls," but he immediately chased it with the universally hated "Norbit" only months later. "Norbit" made money, but no one seemed to like it. Some have even said that the presence of "Norbit" in theaters harmed Murphy's chance of winning an Oscar that year. He lost to Alan Arkin in "Little Miss Sunshine."

With its ’70s-era production details and sprawling age-spanning ensemble, Saturday Night has high hopes for the Oscars this year. But if the Jason Reitman period piece manages to win one, it will achieve something that the cast it depicts never could.
Though Saturday Night Live has racked up a record-breaking 103 Emmys and churned out generational talent with regularity over its 50 seasons, only six among its more than 150 castmembers have ever been nominated for an Oscar (five if you don’t include one-episode-and-done player Laurie Metcalf).
Its only winner? Robert Downey Jr., just this past March for Oppenheimer. And his 1985-86 SNL stint is a career footnote.
“I don’t think it’s conscious,” says Turner Classic Movies host Dave Karger, an Oscar prognosticator and author of 50 Oscar Nights, “but there might be something going on. There’s obviously a disconnect between SNL and [film] awards.”

When the horror genre comes to mind, it's hard not to think of Wes Craven. The popular genre director gave us such films as A Nightmare on Elm Street, People Under the Stairs, Red Eye, and Scream. However, not everything Craven has made is considered a classic. One of the biggest examples of that is 1995s Vampire in Brooklyn. The horror comedy starring Eddie Murphy (Coming to America) failed to connect with moviegoers when it was initially released, but now Cravens fans can give it a second shot or a first watch on Vizio's free streaming service.

He’s played multiple characters in several of his films, most notably the two “Coming to America” films and the two The Nutty Professor movies. The first Nutty Professor film contains one of Murphy’s signature scenes, when the Klump family sits down to dinner, and Murphy plays five of the six characters on the screen. It wound up being a tour de force performance for Murphy, but he once told us they had their doubts about how it would turn out. The Oscars has added many different award categories across its history, with one being added after the success of a 1980s drama, The Elephant Man. The Academy Awards are easily the most prestigious awards in the movie industry, with the first ceremony taking place in 1929. Across the history of the Academy Awards, there have been many award categories that have been added and retired across the years; most recently the award for Best Sound Editing, which was retired in 2019.
In 2024, the Oscars announced the creation of a new awards category that will recognize a movie's casting decision. The first Academy Award for Best Achievement In Casting will be awarded at the 98th ceremony in 2025; this is the first new award category since the creation of the Best Feature Film category in 2001. Further new categories may be created in the future as seen in the movie industry's campaign for a Best Stunt Award.

Ron Howard's 1988 fantasy film "Willow" was a striking hit when it was first released, mixing Tolkien-like wizard magic with traditional "Star Wars"-like story beats. The title character (Warwick Davis) was an innocent Nelwyn sorcerer who finds an abandoned human infant in his remote village. This infant was born with a mystical birthmark, implying that she would bring about the downfall of the evil Queen Bavmorda (Jean Marsh). The birthmark also explains why hellhounds seem to be on its tail. Willow decides to leave home and return the baby to her parents. Along the way, he'll fall into the company of a wisecracking criminal named Madmartigan (Val Kilmer), and several other co-adventurers besides.
The film was a notable hit, making over $137 million on a $36 million budget, although it wasn't a runaway success. It did, however, face still competition that year from films like "Big," "Rain Man," "Who Framed Roger Rabbit?...

It's a bit of trivia that you can use to stump friends at parties, especially those folks who fancy themselves a know-it-all about how the film industry works: doesn't a major motion picture based on a Marvel comic produced by "Star Wars" and "Indiana Jones" guru George Lucas during the peak of his filmmaking career sound like a sure-fire hit? Of course, it's a trick question, as the movie in question, 1986's "Howard the Duck," was a notorious flop, one which sent Lucas back to the "maybe I should think about making some 'Star Wars' prequels" drawing board and very likely helped keep more Marvel properties off the big screen for several years. Although the film was certainly not a complete waste of time — its long research & development process regarding the title character eventually led to what became Pixar — its status as a flop tarnished the careers of Lucas, director/co-writer Willard Huyck,...

When Eddie Murphy debuted on SNL in 1980, he instantly became the show’s biggest star — in large part because of the characters he created. And it definitely was characters, as in plural, as in many more than just one. In fact, they’ve transcended era, too, as they’ve remained some of the most well-known in SNL history, particularly Gumby, Buckwheat, Mr. Robinson and Murphy’s take on James Brown.
For the most part, Murphy crafted them with the help of the writing duo Barry W. Blaustein and David Sheffield, both of whom would later play a big part in Murphy’s film career, writing Coming to America, Nutty Professor and several other of his movies.
I recently caught up with Blaustein about his time writing with Murphy on SNL, who, during our call, shared the financial advice James Brown gave Murphy, why Gumby’s creator loved Murphy’s twist...

Timing is everything, horses for courses, styles make fights, and every movie, no matter how packed with potential on the page, is subject to the whims of fate. And here's a casting "what if" that, had it gone a different way, might've turned one of the most beloved movies of the 1990s into a colossal flop.

On Friday, Oct. 19, Variety partnered with the Santa Fe International Film festival to celebrate its 10 Screenwriters to Watch. The 80s and early 90s were full of interracial buddy comedies in the action genre. Beginning with 48 Hrs. in 1982, Hollywood was churning out such movies, often paring Caucasian and African-American male leads struggling to see eye-to-eye while dealing with a larger problem. Amos & Andrew was no exception with the casting of its stars, Nicolas Cage and Samuel L. Jackson. At the time of its production, Cage had a reputation for portraying eccentric comedic roles in classics such as Moonstruck, Honeymoon in Vegas, and Raising Arizona. Similarly, Jackson was a steady character actor whose face became increasingly familiar to audiences by appearing in Spike Lees projects and supporting roles in Coming to America and Strictly Business. Both actors were hardly the box office draws they would become later in the decade. Yet, they had the talent to play societal opposites of each other in this racially charged comedy.

LeVar Burton shared his thoughts on the late John Amos during an appearance on ABC’s The View today, praising his Roots costar – they played the enslaved person Kunta Kinte at different points in the character’s life – for his groundbreaking TV portrayal on Good Times.
“James Evans, the character that John played on Good Times, was the first Black man as householder on TV,” Burton said. “The whole family, the father making it work for the family. When I was coming up Black men were generally portrayed as absent fathers, shiftless, fodder for prison and criminals. And John Amos changed that. May his name forever be blessed.”
“And it will,” responded View moderator Whoopi Goldberg.
Amos died August 21 at the age of 84. His death was announced on October 1 by his son Kelly Christopher Amos. According to the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s office, Amos died of congestive heart failure.
