Jeff Tweedy Will Fight Our Dark Times With a New Triple Album
Image
If you’re a fan of Jeff Tweedy, you know that he writes a lot of songs. Not just in the sense that he’s spent more than 30 years leading Wilco through one of the most rewarding and varied catalogs in American music, although that’s also true. On the most literal level, Tweedy generally writes at least one song every day. “I sincerely feel a need to have that in my life,” he told Rolling Stone in 2020, the year that he published a great book about this daily practice.

The B-Side Ep. 160 – Debra Winger (with Murtada Elfadl)
Image
Welcome to The B-Side! Here we talk about movie stars! Not the movies that made them famous or kept them famous, but the ones that they made in between.

Today we talk about the great Debra Winger! Our B-Sides include Legal Eagles, Betrayed, The Sheltering Sky, and Forget Paris. Our guest is the inestimable Murtada Elfadl, Culture Writer, Critic, and Film Curator.

We discuss Winger’s stratospheric rise to stardom, her indescribable performance in Terms of Endearment, and her (unfair?) reputation for being “difficult.” There’s also plenty of discussion about Rosanna Arquette’s documentary Searching for Debra Winger, a film in which Arquette speaks with many famous actresses about aging in Hollywood. The motivation of the piece was partly motivated by Winger’s exodus from the business for over half a decade in the mid-1990s.

There’s also conversation about Shirley MacLaine’s 1984 Oscars speech, Tom Berenger being...

Police are reportedly looking for rapper Lil Xan after the rapper was recorded on a video striking an audience member during his Boston gig last week.

Norwegian Director Eirik Svensson’s Africa-Set Drama ‘Safe House’ Tells Pulled-From-Headlines Story of Aid Worker’s Harrowing Plight
Image
An explosive confrontation between a Muslim man and a Christian mob in an African nation on the brink is at the heart of “Safe House,” an upcoming drama from Norwegian filmmaker Eirik Svensson. The film, which is being repped internationally by TrustNordisk, was presented among the works in progress this week at the Finnish Film Affair in Helsinki.

Written by prolific screenwriters Harald Rosenløw-Eeg and Lars Gudmestad, “Safe House” is based on the real-life story of Lindis Hurum, a Norwegian field worker with the aid group Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors Without Borders) who was stationed in the Central African Republic when civil war erupted in 2013.

The story unfolds on Christmas Eve at a field hospital outside a refugee camp in the capital, Bangui. As Hurum and her colleagues tirelessly work to save lives, a desperate Muslim man rushes into the clinic, fleeing persecution by an angry Christian mob. As the...

Image
Labor Day weekend has come and gone, and that can only mean one thing – it’s TIFF time, baby! Once again, I’ll be attending the Toronto International Film Festival on behalf of JoBlo.com. I’m looking forward to getting an early look at some of the prestigious awards fare we’ll all be hearing plenty about in the coming months. Crazy enough, this will be my sixteenth year in a row covering the festival!

Here’s what I’m most excited to check out at this year’s edition:

Conclave:

Edward Berger’s All Quiet on the Western Front was one of the biggest surprises of the 2022 edition of TIFF, as that new adaptation of the classic novel/ film proved to be one of the most dazzling war films in recent memory. It put Berger on the map in a big way, with him tipped as potentially taking...

Bold and the Beautiful: Luna Hit with Whopping Trio of Betrayals Next Week?

Bold and the Beautiful has Luna Nozawa thinking her conversations with Rj Forrester are just between them, but when her mother gets carted off, it looks like the young intern can’t trust her boyfriend anymore on this CBS soap. But he’s not the only betrayal Luna faces when B&b rolls out next week.

Bold and the Beautiful: What’s Up with Rj Forrester?

Luna Nozawa (Lisa Yamada) trusted Rj Forrester (Joshua Hoffman) with what she found in the apartment she once called home. She was concerned that her mother hid Tom Starr’s (Clint Howard) backpack behind the couch for a devious reason.

Poppy Nozawa (Romy Park) denied any knowledge of the beat-up bag holding all Tom’s earthly belongings. This included letters he wrote to Poppy but were returned to the sender. It soon appears Luna Nozawa made a grave mistake on Bold and the Beautiful last...

Leonard Engelman, Makeup Artist on ‘Rocky IV,’ ‘Moonstruck’ and Much More, Dies at 83
Image
Leonard Engelman, the esteemed makeup artist who worked on films including Rocky IV, The Princess Diaries, Batman & Robin and How the Grinch Stole Christmas and did Cher’s makeup for more than 30 years, has died. He was 83.

Engelman died Thursday at Northridge Hospital Medical Center, his wife of 42 years, artist Esther Engelman, told The Hollywood Reporter. The cause of death is unclear, she said.

The son of a Hollywood makeup artist, Engelman labored for a long time to convince the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences to install a makeup branch, as those artisans had always been “at-large” members. And when it did so in 2006, he was elected its first governor. Later, he worked to have hairstylists added.

He also served as an Academy vice president and board member for many years.

Engelman received Emmy nominations in 1972 for an episode of Night Gallery and in 2001 for the miniseries Jackie Bouvier Kennedy Onassis,...

10 Most Watched Netflix Series Of All Time(Photo Credit –Instagram)

In the past decade, Netflix has dominated the television landscape, doling out the biggest hits in entertainment. Netflix, which launched as a streaming platform a decade later in 2007, pioneered the streaming era, dishing out a slew of original shows that have enabled the streamer to establish itself as an award-winning content giant.

Netflix’s top 10s enable viewers to see the biggest original hits within the first 91 days of release. The hits are measured by taking the runtime of the show or movie and dividing it by the number of hours watched. While the mechanism is a bit convoluted, that’s all the steamer has for you now. At Least the numbers aren’t cloaked in secrecy like in Apple.

The numbers are recorded from October 2021 to June 2024 after Netflix switched its scale from the number of households who watched within the first 28 days.

Talos' Big Problem in Secret Invasion Is Only Getting Worse
Image
The following contains spoilers from Secret Invasion Season 1, Episode 3, "Betrayed," now streaming on Disney+.

With so many bombshells coming to light in Secret Invasion, it's tough to see the heroes keeping their cool. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury, for example, has clues James "Rhodey" Rhodes is a Skrull, affirming that he really can't trust the people he usually would. Even his wife, Priscilla, has him thinking twice about things. All this suspicion paints Gravik and the shape-shifters as cerebral, intimidating threats.

This subterfuge leaves Ben Mendelsohn's Talos on edge as well. Talos realized his and Fury's plan to offer temporary refuge has backfired, dooming Earth as Gravik carries out his extremist plot to take over for his species. Sadly, while Fury is still keeping his wits about him, Talos is turning out to be a problem. In fact, Talos succumbing to one flawed trait could spell major disaster down the line.

Secret Invasion Shows Nick Fury Owes Everything to the Skrulls
Image
The following contains spoilers from Secret Invasion, Season 1, Episode 3, "Betrayed," now streaming on Disney+.

The prequel story in Captain Marvel introduced Nick Fury as a mid-level S.H.I.E.L.D. Agent making first contact with two kinds of aliens. While the quasi-Kree Carol Danvers was the most powerful one, the most important aliens he met were the ones she was originally hunting. The third episode of Secret Invasion reveals that everything Nick Fury became is owed to the Skrulls he had working for him.

The end of Captain Marvel suggested that Carol took the Skrulls to find a new home. That's been retconned into gathering up the Skrull refugees and harboring them on Earth. Nick Fury was alone with the aliens in Episode 2's 1995 scene introducing both Varra and Gravik. He promised to find them a place they could call "home," but first, he asked them to help him protect Earth.

Secret Invasion Has What Agents Of Shield Was Missing
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion, Episode 3, "Betrayed," streaming now on Disney+.

When Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. was released hot off the heels of The Avengers, it seemed like a new opportunity to explore the world of espionage that fueled the organization. Furthermore, with Phil Coulson leading a team of agents, it raised questions regarding his resurrection and how the many cases they'd face would answer them. What resulted was seven seasons that explored spies, aliens, the supernatural and time travel.

Though this method worked for the series, it was clear the core expectations of the series had all but dissipated. Secret Invasion, on the other hand, has managed to use spycraft and science fiction to build a story that's filled with drama and tension. But the biggest surprise of all has been how the series succeeded in using the same foundation of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. but utilized it more effectively.

Secret Invasion Simplified Trust Better Than the Comics
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion, Episode 3, "Betrayed," streaming now on Disney+.

When the Secret Invasion comic by Brian Michael Bendis and Leinil Francis Yu was released, it was a deeply personal story about heroes fighting the Skrull Empire. It was a tale of desperation where the Skrull race were more victims than villains yet still antagonists. As a result, it became one of the most turbulent events, as trust became the only tool that could separate friend from foe. It also formed the foundation on which the entire television series was based.

The Secret Invasion show does away with capes and masks and focuses on Nick Fury, who, after returning to Earth from S.A.B.E.R., finds himself in a war against a rogue Skrull army. Unlike the comics, the show is more of Fury answering for the mistakes of his past rather than the world's heroes fighting a war before it reached civilians.

Secret Invasion Connects Nick Fury's Wife to Black Widow
Image
The following contains spoilers from Secret Invasion, Season 1, Episode 3, "Betrayed," now streaming on Disney+.

As Secret Invasion proceeds, the old adage of "don't trust anyone" resonates as loudly as ever. Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury is learning that firsthand as he uncovers more of the Skrull's plans to take over. Clearly, Fury's project to offer refuge and find them a new home backfired, which leaves him on edge.

It creates more tension with characters like Talos and the sinister G'iah. Interestingly, as Secret Invasion unravels yet another betrayal, the series connects Fury's wife, Priscilla, to someone important in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. This is none other than Black Widow, hinting the past holds a lot more secrets than first assumed.

Secret Invasion Star Insists Green Screens Didn't Hurt the MCU Show's Performances
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion, Episode 3, "Betrayed," streaming now on Disney+.

Secret Invasion star Emilia Clarke recently disputed the claim that the Marvel Cinematic Universe miniseries' use of green screens negatively impacted the cast's performances.

Clarke argued that the quality of acting in Secret Invasion is as high as in other, less visual effects-heavy shows in an interview with The Los Angeles Times. "The stigma is that people don’t do any acting in these shows [because of all the green screens]," she said. "[But] then you're like, 'Well, then why are they asking all these great actors to do it, and why are they saying yes?'" Clarke can certainly speak from experience, having previously appeared in other productions that made extensive use of green screen technology, such as Game of Thrones, Terminator Genisys and Solo: A Star Wars Story.

Secret Invasion Is Finally Redeeming Iron Man 3
Image
This article contains spoilers

As Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion reaches its halfway point, the spy series is surprising us in more ways than one. It’s not just the shocking death of Emilia Clarke’s G’iah and the well-signposted reveal that Don Cheadle’s James “Rhodey” Rhodes is a Skrull that make Episode 3 worth a watch. Somehow, Secret Invasion has done the almost unthinkable and made us reconsider Iron Man 3.

Up there with Alan Taylor’s Thor: The Dark World and (more recently) Chloé Zhao’s Eternals, Shane Black’s 2013 threequel is often held as one of the ‘worst’ Marvel Cinematic Universe movies. While even a bad MCU outing usually fares better than an average DC movie, Iron Man 3’s reception hasn’t exactly improved over the years. With botched villains, a bizarre push to release in 3D, and That Mandarin twist, it’s taken a...

Secret Invasion Episode 3 Review
Image
With its third episode, "Betrayed," Marvel's Secret Invasion benefits from finally finding some semblance of narrative cohesion and momentum in its primary storyline, but the show as a whole continues to feel unfocused and disparately crafted.

After two episodes of Secret Invasion throwing unmotivated action at the wall to see what sticks, the series has put itself into a corner. In an apparent bid to avoid audiences finding the first two episodes slow-paced, Marvel elected to have Secret Invasion hit the ground running, but without ever taking the time to properly lay the foundation for the show, its characters, or its themes in the first place. The larger issues and dissonance inherent to these choices come home to roost in "Betrayed," which sees Secret Invasion halfway through its run and just now beginning to kick off its primary storyline properly.

Secret Invasion Episode 3 Seemingly Kills Emilia Clarke's Gi'ah
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 3, "Betrayed," now streaming on Disney+.

Emilia Clarke's G'iah took a bullet and was left for dead in the third episode of Marvel Studios' Secret Invasion.

Two weeks after Maria Hill's death in the series premiere shocked the Marvel Cinematic Universe fandom, Secret Invasion has once again left a character's fate ambiguous. In "Betrayed" -- the third episode of the Disney+ limited series -- it is revealed that the rebel Skrull's leader, Gravik, set a trap to find out which Skrull was working with the humans. Although G'iah tried to escape, she was stopped by Gravik who revealed that he knew she was the spy. Gravik then shot G'iah right in the chest. Fans were left with an image of G'iah bleeding out. At this time, it is unknown if G'iah will survive the gunshot wound or meet a similar fate to that of Maria Hill.

Secret Invasion Episode 3 Confirms [Spoiler] Is a Skrull
Image
The following contains spoilers for Secret Invasion Episode 3, "Betrayed," now streaming on Disney+.

Secret Invasion has confirmed that James "Rhodey" Rhodes has been replaced by a Skrull.

There are several moments in "Betrayed" -- the third episode of the Disney+ limited series -- that hint at Don Cheadle's beloved Marvel Cinematic Universe character being a Skrull before it is confirmed in the episode's final moments. Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) is seen telling Talos that he's "got a lead on a rebel Skrull that's high up in the U.S. government, and he's in London right now." Rhodey was previously in London as Envoy for the United States. Then later in "Betrayed," Fury states to the Skrull pretending to be Talos that nobody calls him by his first name, something that Rhodey did during their conversation in Episode 2.

Secret Invasion Episode 3 Review: Rhodes to Redemption
Image
This review contains spoilers

Not much happens in the third episode of Secret Invasion, but “Betrayed” is easily the best instalment of the Marvel show yet. The show got off to a messy, uneven start, but after a much-improved second episode it seems to have hit its stride here, as the relationships between the main players gel together and the fraught nature of their history deepens. This episode also has some of the best lighting and composition I’ve seen in the MCU to date.

In “Betrayed”, little time has passed since the “Nick Fury has a wife!” twist at the end of last week’s episode. To be clear, we’ve known Nick had a wife since Captain America: The Winter Soldier, but we didn’t know she was a Skrull. Their marriage is naturally a mess, with Nick having been thought dead for five years during The Blip,...

After many accolades with nominations and awards from around the globe, “Beneath Us All” is moving from the festival circuit to VOD & physical media from Painted Creek Productions and Deskpop Entertainment.

“Beneath Us All” is from the same writer/director and producers from last years big hit “Ash and Bone”. It’s easy to see why the horror community is so excited with Harley Wallen directing and written by Bret Miller (same collaborators from Ash and Bone) and a pretty amazing ensemble with Sean Whalen (Twister/The People Under the Stairs), Maria Olsen (Percy & the Olympians/I Spit on Your Grave), Yan Birch (The People...

15 Lightsaber Designs Way Cooler Than Anything Star Wars Movies Have Ever Done
Image
Lightsabers have always been an essential aspect of the Star Wars universe. In fact, they may very well be the most iconic and recognizable item from the galaxy far, far away. Ever since Luke Skywalker first ignited his father’s lightsaber in Obi-Wan Kenobi’s hut, Star Wars hasn’t stopped exploring all the variants of the humble weapon. The original trilogy solidified the most basic lightsaber colors and their meanings, but the prequel trilogy really started to experiment with cool and creative new lightsabers—such as Darth Maul’s iconic double-bladed lightsaber—much to the delight of the audience.

While the Star Wars movies have showcased some pretty cool lightsabers (like Kylo Ren’s crossguard saber), they have barely scratched the surface on the plethora of saber designs in the Star Wars universe. Both Star Wars canon and Legends have shown several intriguing hilt and saber designs. With seven...

‘Betrayed’ Review: A Treacherous Holocaust Tragedy
Image
“Betrayed” doesn’t depict anything that hasn’t been seen many times before, but that’s less a knock on its lack of originality than a sad reflection of the fact that millions suffered similar hardships, tragedies and horrors during the Holocaust. Based on a true story, Eirik Svensson’s WWII saga focuses on the Braude family, who along with hundreds of fellow Norwegian Jews were rounded up and sent to work camps or, via the SS Donau cargo ship on Nov. 26, 1942, to Auschwitz, from which they never returned. , and no less valuable — or powerful — for being regrettably familiar.

Svensson opens “Betrayed” with Nazi collaborator Knut Rød (Anders Danielsen Lie) tranquilly dispensing orders to his men to detain the remaining Jews left in Oslo. It’s a small, quiet vision of the bureaucratic work upon which fascist genocide is built, and it casts a mournful pall over the ensuing action,...

Committee chief, Kjersti Mo, who is also Director of the Norwegian Film Institute, called the movie a “tribute to film art in the form of a drama comedy that conveys deep seriousness with playful lightness and elegance.” This is Trier’s third time repping his home country.

The Worst Person In The World debuted at the Cannes Film Festival in July, winning the Best Actress prize for lead Renate Reinsve. It later went on to play myriad festivals including Karlovy Vary,...

Piotr Domalewski to Direct Afghan War Film ‘Betrayed,’ Producer of Oscar Nominated ‘Corpus Christi,’ Leszek Bodzak, on Board (Exclusive)
Image
Polish director Piotr Domalewski, whose film “I Never Cry” screens this week in El Gouna Film Festival’s Out of Competition section, is facing a growing controversy surrounding his next project. It centers on the Nangar Khel incident, when Polish soldiers fired mortar shells into a wedding party in an Afghan village in 2007, killing six civilians. It became known as “the event that changed the Polish army.” “Some monstrous online discussion has already started,” Domalewski says.

The film is an adaptation of the book “Betrayed” by journalist Edyta Żemła, which investigated where the blame lay for the incident, and itself had an explosive effect, mostly because of Żemła’s claim that “in Nangar Khel, it wasn’t the soldiers who tarnished the honor of the Polish army, but the politicians.” Żemła will act as a consultant on the film, which has the working title “Nangar Khel – Zdradzeni” (“Nangar Khel – Betrayed...
