Superman is a pop-culture phenomenon that has stood the test of time, from cartoons, movies, and comic books, people just can't get enough of The Man of Steel. In fact, DC's most iconic hero has been so successful that you might wonder why there haven't been more spinoffs that focus on Superman when it comes to TV. There have been attempts: recent examples include "Supergirl" over on CBS and "Krypton" aired on SyFy about a decade ago, but one earlier live-action adaptation would have been a massive hit if it ever made it to series. "The Adventures of Superboy" was a canceled '60s Superman show that could have been a classic in the genre if it had gotten the push the show needed. Instead, it lives on as a curiosity of a bygone era of TV.

The Last Son of Krypton, the Man of Steel, the original superhero. Superman has been a part of the very fabric of pop-culture since he first arrived on the comic book scene in 1938 when he truly made people believe that a man could fly. It's no surprise that the awe, the wonder, and the hope that the DC Comics legend has inspired has lasted through the generations, entertaining audiences and readers around the world for almost a century.
We say "audiences" because, yes, the Man of Tomorrow has transcended his genre to become a movie legend, a TV legend, an animated legend, and a video game legend. There are so many fields that the hero has become a part of over the years (and so many more that we haven't mentioned) that it's hard to imagine what they all looked like without him. But that's just another clear example of...

Arguably the most iconic superhero in the world is Superman, the flagship character of DC Comics created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster in 1938. A smash success with readers upon his debut, the Man of Steel was immediately adapted into other mediums, from radio and movie serials and among the earliest superhero television series. With that in mind, there have been a lot of actors to play Superman in live-action, beyond small cameos and one-off appearances. And just like the many live-action Batman actors, everyone has their own favorite who played the legendary superhero.
From the franchise's black-and-white days on film and television to its big-budget Hollywood blockbuster era, the coming of a live-action Superman still feels like an event. But as beloved as many of these interpretations of the classic characters are, some just clearly stand as superior compared to their counterparts. It's a bird! It's a plane! It's a new Superman movie! DC Comics' flagship hero once again takes flight in James Gunn's universe re-launching blockbuster, which arrives in multiplexes on July 11 after years of false starts at getting a new Man of Steel-led feature film into production.
That's nothing new for this particular superhero franchise, though. Multiple live-action Superman feature films have soared headlong into dead ends in the decades since Richard Donner and Christopher Reeve first made audiences believe a man could fly on the big screen in 1978. Even the involvement of big-name directors like Tim Burton and George Miller or famous faces like Jude Law and Nicolas Cage couldn't overcome the Kryptonite that is development hell.
While the Last Son of Krypton isn't a regular presence at the Oscars — and Gunn's take likely won't change that — some of those never-made movies boasted elements that could have made them awards players.

This article contains spoilers for "Superman."
Superman's archenemy is, without a doubt, Lex Luthor. But the problem the movies have always run into is that Luthor is a normal guy; one punch from Superman and he's dust. So how do you make Lex stand toe-to-toe with the Man of Steel? Traditionally, there have been two options: Either put Lex in a suit of armor, or give him a superpowered enforcer.
Superman movies have always gone with the latter, and James Gunn's new "Superman" is no different. Lex's (Nicholas Hoult) muscle is Ultraman. Yes, the rumors were true, Ultraman does appear in "Superman" as a key villain. However, he's a bit different than the comic book version.
During "Superman," Ultraman stays silent and wears a full body black suit, with a goggled mask resembling Doomsday's.

It's an exciting time to be a DC fan, as James Gunn's Superman is about to hit theaters and with that has come a whole lot of merchandise. However, this high-flying film isn't a one-off. It’s a cinematic fresh start for a new shared universe, a world that's going to include Justice League members like Batman, Green Lantern, Hawkgirl, and Wonder Woman. Now, ahead of Superman’s arrival, McFarlane Toys have unveiled their latest wave of comic book figures.
A part of McFarlane's DC Direct Page Punchers series, there are two new seven-inch scale figures: Wonder Woman and Superboy. Both figures are based on their first self-titled comic appearances, with Wonder Woman's first full appearance dating back to 1942. Each figure includes extra hands, an art card, a base, and a re-printed issue of Wonder Woman #1 and Superboy#1. They'll be $27.99 Usd each. Wonder Woman and Superboy now join the...

This week we say goodbye to a true, true titan of comics history, as Jim Shooter pulls his chair up to the great writing, editing desk in the sky. Normally, when I have been doing these obituaries, I have passed over divisive elements of people’s careers. I don’t believe Shooter set out to be divisive in his distinguished career; he made decisions based on his love for comics. So the good, the bad and the ugly will remain this time and don’t think Shooter would have had it any other way. Living on the other side of the pond from all the big comics news, I discover things in different ways. On the morning of July 1st, I woke to an Instagram post from Marc Bernardin showing the cover to Secret Wars #4. Was he just posting a favourite cover or an image related to some movie news?...

Jim Shooter, the iconic comic book writer who broke into writing comics for DC when he was just 14 years old, and who later became one of the most influential Editors-in-Chief in Marvel history, has died at the age of 73, according to comic book writer, Mark Waid, who noted that Shooter had been suffering from esophogeal cancer for a few years now.
Famously (it was literally the first legend I did as part of Comic Book Legends Revealed), Shooter started writing for DC when he was just 14 years old. As a big comic book fan, he understood that the Marvel Comics of 1964-65 were a good deal sharper than most DC books of the era, so Shooter's idea was to pitch DC on stories that were more like Marvel ones. Really thoughtful idea, right? He also actively looked for a comic book that he felt had the biggest problems with its story,...

I need my fellow Gen-Xers to chime in:
"When criminals in this world appear / And break the laws that they should fear / And frighten all who see or hear / The cry goes up both far and near / for Underdog!"
Those are the lyrics to the theme song for the 1964 animated series "Underdog," a series about a canine named Shoeshine Boy (Wally Cox) who would occasionally transform into the eponymous flying, super-strong superhero to protect his girlfriend, Polly Purebred (Norma McMillan), from the evils of the mad scientist Simon Bar Sinister (Allen Swift). "Underdog" was in heavy syndication for years, so those of a certain age likely saw multiple episodes without trying. Underdog was an appealing character because he seemed mild-mannered even while in hero mode, and because he always spoke in rhyming couplets. Curiously, Underdog seemed to get his superpowers by popping "super energy pills," which sounds narcotics-adjacent to the modern ear.

By now, you’ve probably seen all the posters, trailers and promo material pushing James Gunn’s new Superman reboot starring David Corenswet, which arrives in cinemas on 11 July 2025. Of course, with every new actor who puts on the red boots and red undies, fans rush in to debate who wore the cape best. But here’s a weird bit of Man of Steel trivia you probably didn’t know: One Superman actor nearly got cast as Kal-El twice, simply because the producers didn’t realise he had already played him before. That might be the most Clark Kent thing ever. Gerard Christopher took over the role of Clark Kent in the 1998 Superboy TV series in Season 2 and actually managed to stick around for three seasons of the show. Yeah, Superboy might not be at the top of the list of best live-action Superman adaptations, and it’s not as...

While the Devil hasn’t shown his head in Salem for a while, Days of Our Lives has still delivered some horrific moments, such as when Ej was shot or John was engulfed in the meth lab explosion. Star Stacy Haiduk, who plays the seductive and scheming Kristen Dimera, is no stranger to horror movies and TV shows. The actress had previously urged fans to buckle up for her vampire horror short, Brand New Cadillac, in October 2024. And recently, she shared some gruesome fun she had at a horror convention.
She Became a Bride
Haiduk shared a video on Instagram set to Bachman-Turner Overdrive’s rock classic, You Ain’t Seen Nothing Yet. The video was a fast-motion time-lapse of her having extensive makeup and prosthetics applied to her, giving her a stitched-together, Bride of Frankenstein-type look, yet unique and refreshing. Despite the heavy makeup effects, Haiduk’s incredible beauty shone through.

James Gunn's Superman is less than two months away from releasing in theaters, and DC Studios has heavily ramped up the marketing. The latest trailer for Superman showed off more of David Corenswet's Man of Steel, while giving fans a better look at the movie's various villains. While fans got the best looks yet at Lex Luthor (Nicholas Hoult), The Engineer (María Gabriela de Faría), and the Hammer of Boravia (unknown), some fans believe that a fourth, bizarre villain is hiding within the trailer. Unfortunately for Superman fans, James Gunn quickly shut that rumor down.
The latest trailer for Superman included a shot of David Corenswet's Superman flying from the sky towards the camera. Due to the distorted color of the shot, some fans thought the shot revealed Bizarro's unexpected Dcu debut. "Obviously distorted for the trailer, but could this really be Bizarro?" wrote one fan on Threads,...

No one could ever accuse the 1990s sitcom "Seinfeld" of being a show for the book-averse jocks of the world, but in season 8 the series took its nerdiest turn of all in the episode "The Bizarro Jerry." They end up being the complete opposites of her other ex-boyfriend, Jerry (Jerry Seinfeld), and his two best friends, George (Jason Alexander) and Kramer (Michael Richards). When Elaine tries to discuss the whole freaky experience with Jerry, he immediately turns to his love of "Superman" to explain it in a very comic book way: she's met the bizarro versions of her friends! The French Connection. Unforgiven. The Poseidon Adventure. Crimson Tide. Hoosiers. Gene Hackman is one of the most outstanding actors of this generation—or any generation. At the age of 95, he lived a remarkable life, one of acclaim and prestige. Regretfully, his death is clouded in mystery. His roles will be cherished for decades to come. His two Oscars will be on the cinephile's mantle forever.
Yet, among nerds, he will always be Lex Luthor.
Some nerds (and critics) thought Hackman's portrayal of Superman's criminal nemesis was part huckster and used car salesman. When it's that guy, Hollywood thought they were getting a more serious tone with grit and that signature gravely voice barking commands.
He was paired with Ned Beatty, another serious thespian. Yet, when faced against Christopher Reeve, they became Abbott and Costello.
And you know what? DC Comics wouldn't have had any other way. It worked splendidly.
Critics loved the performance.

However, the same is true of Lex Luthor, the Man of Steel's main nemesis in comics, animation and live action adaptations. There have been actors who brought this role to life, but nearly a decade after his first appearance, I'm convinced most critics are wrong about Lex Luthor as realized by Jesse Eisenberg in the DC Extended Universe of films. Fortunately for the series, it fell under the new "cost-effective international content strategy" at the network, helping to secure the renewal. The show reportedly costs less than $1 million per episode for network-quality content, and better yet, it garnered high viewership. Murder in a Small Town reportedly ranks among the Top 3 new shows for Fox series on Hulu, as well as for all Fox content from the 2024-25 television season. The pilot episode alone drew 11 million viewers to date across platforms.

Per Deadline, it has been revealed that Murder in a Small Town has been renewed by Fox for Season 2.

Superman was the first fictional character to fully embody the archetype we now call a "superhero" — and as with any prototype, he didn't arrive fully formed. The Superman we know today is a fair bit different from the one who debuted in Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster's "Action Comics" #1. He didn't fly, for one, nor were there any glowing green rocks called "Kryptonite" to weaken him.
As the good folks at DC Comics will tell you, Kryptonite first appeared in 1943 on the "Adventures of Superman" radio show. It then made it to the comics in 1949 and got its trademark green color in 1951.
When Superman is near Kryptonite, he'll show several classical symptoms of weakness: losing his equilibrium and collapsing, struggling to move, bleeding from his nose, etc. Depending on the version, the mineral either explicitly negates Superman's powers or just makes him too weak to fight. Generally, Kryptonite is...

2025 has already confirmed that one DC villain has been carried over from the Dceu to the DC Universe, and I'm stoked to see them cross the threshold into the franchise's new world. The early weeks of 2025 are providing a bountiful point of time for those invested in the MCU and blossoming Dcu, with the DC Universe's Batman getting his first proper cameo on the second day of the year, and Captain America: Brave New World being set to finally bring Sam Wilson's Captain America to the big screen with its February 2025 release.
However, one of the most interesting revelations for 2025 revolves around a character who has traditionally been a villain. With the DC Universe keeping elements from the Dceu timeline, characters transitioning over from the old world isn't unheard of - especially since the first few shows on the DC Universe release schedule are about some of these figures,...

Quick Links Lex Luthor First Lived in Smallville in the Superboy Comic Book Series Smallville Added a New Dimension to Superman's Greatest Nemesis A Criticized Element in Smallville Is Very Important Characterization How Future Adaptations Can Look to Smallville's Finale for Inspiration Smallville Didn't Need to Revert Luthor to the Superman Comics' Status Quo
With nearly 90 years of history, there have been many versions of the Superman story in comics and in other media. Many elements that appeared outside the comics became integral pieces of the character's mythology. The 23-year-old Smallville series made Clark Kent and Lex Luthor friends first. That unique dynamic should become an indelible part of their backstory in future adaptations.

Warning: Spoilers for Action Comics #1081Superman may be regarded as a paragon of justice in the DC Universe, but even the Man of Steel isn't perfect, and his greatest failure demonstrates just how flawed he is. At long last, Superman has been forced to acknowledge that there's one person he's unable to save: his own brother. Despite his many successes, Superman must contend with a major shortcoming of his in a heartbreaking moment.
The preview for Action Comics #1081 by Mark Waid, Clayton Henry, Matt Herms, and Dave Sharpe sets the stage for an epic finale as the Phantom Zone's escaped prisoners converge on Earth to take out the Super-Family once and for all. As Xa-Du rallies his forces, Superman has a serious discussion with his brother Mon-El about his current status.
Mon-El is becoming solid outside the Phantom Zone, which would kill him, so Superman forces him back into exile.

Smallville was a truly groundbreaking show. It brought Superman to life in a live-action adventure that featured him as a dramatic teenager, rather than a larger-than-life hero. Instead of glossing over his origin story, it went into depth about every detail, making Clark Kent much more relatable to modern audiences.
Yet, to modernize the story, it still needed to make some massive changes to Superman lore. Instead of relying on the narrative established in the Superboy, Superman, and Action Comics releases, it created its own origin story. Those deviations often made for a better structure, but it did mean that the show was not always faithful to the source material.
The Show Invented Many of Its Early Villains
Smallville was intentionally structured as an episodic series. Though it did feature serialized elements, it focused on a villain-of-the-week structure that quickly would have run through many of Superman's comic antagonists. As a consequence,...

Warning: Major Spoilers from the Superman & Lois series finale.Jordan Kent actor Alex Garfin, takes ScreenRant behind the makings of the Superman & Lois series finale and bids farewell to his DC role of Superboy. In 2006, after merging Upn and The WB into one network, The CW began its DC TV era with the Superman prequel show Smallville, featuring Tom Welling as a young Man of Steel discovering his Kryptonian heritage. With the changes behind The CW under Nexstar, it was only fitting that a different Superman series brought the superhero genre to an end on the network, with Superman & Lois season 4.
The Superman & Lois season 4 finale, "It Went By So Fast," saw Tyler Hoechlin and Bitsie Tulloch's Clark Kent and Lois Lane finally deal with Doomsday, and Lex Luthor once and for all. While the Lane-Kent family dealt with their final big bad, the Superman & Lois...

Superman and Lois had an amazing series finale with a truly powerful climax that closed out the Arrowverse in a bold way!
Caution: This article contains Spoilers for the Superman & Lois series finale
The grand finale for the series “It Went By So Fast” opened with Superman battling Doomsday, aided by his sons. It was a brutal fight before Superman finally managed to fly Doomsday into the sun. An oddly warm-hearted moment had Doomsday, in its final moments, remembering its life on that other Earth with Superman actually sad to see the brief man within the monster before it was consumed by the sun.
With Doomsday taken care of, the next step was Lex Luthor in a Kryptonite-powered suit of armor. By now realizing what a psycho Lex was, Amanda tried to quit with Lex trying to kill her, but thankfully, Jordan and Jonathan saved her.

DC Comics ass-backwards anti-hero 'Bizarro' waits patiently on the sidelines for his full-length live-action moment in the spotlight:
'Bizarro' was created by writer Otto Binder and illustrator George Papp as a 'mirror image' of Superman debuting in "Superboy" #68 (1958).
Since then, Bizarro has appeared as an antagonist to Superman.
His origins started with a scientist demonstrating a newly invented 'duplicating ray' to Superboy...
...but an accident causes the ray to duplicate the teen hero, as a flawed imitation with chalky white skin and childlike erratic behavior.
Bizarro is depicted as having all the abilities of Superman...
...although in some incarnations several of these traits have been reversed.
These powers include 'freeze vision' instead of 'heat vision', 'flame breath' instead of 'freeze breath', 'vacuum breath' instead of 'super breath', etc.
A stand-alone "Bizarro" feature film is being developed by writers Dean Parisot and Robert Gordon.

In what can only be described as saddening news, legendary actor Ron Ely has passed away at the age of 86. The announcement came from his daughter Kirsten Casale Ely, who told The Associated Press that he died on September 29 at his home in Los Alamos, California.
Ely was best known for portraying Tarzan in the NBC TV series, which ran for three seasons between 1966 and 1968. A time when action-packed TV shows based on classic characters were big commodities for network television (See: Batman), Tarzan maintained many of the elements that were popular with the source material, but it is particularly notable for not featuring Jane. It's also notable for the fact that Ely did the majority of his own stunts (and suffered some injuries as a result of that).

Warning! Spoilers for Action Comics #1071!There are tons of different members of Superman's Super-Family, but few people remember his oft-forgotten brother - who has just returned in a major way with a villainous new identity. While there's no doubt that Superman always hoped to see Mon-El again, it's unlikely he ever expected to see him as the new Phantom King.
The shocking return of Mon-El is revealed in Action Comics #1071 by Mark Waid and Clayton Henry. In this story, the Phantom Zone has begun to change, and Superman can't see what's going on inside it. Considering that the Phantom Zone holds some of the worst criminals in the universe, this naturally concerns Superman. With no other choice and wanting to get to the bottom of this, Superman enters the Phantom Zone, where he meets the Phantom King - otherwise known as Mon-El.

Smallville adapts Golden Age Superman and Superboy comics for a modern audience, showing the Man of Steel's upbringing in Smallville, Kansas, and his journey to becoming an icon. The town is plagued by disgruntled citizens imbued with powers from Kryptonian radiation, and it's usually up to Clark and his friends to save the day.
Golden Age Superman stories were notoriously weird, and Smallville perfectly captures that weirdness, balancing the interpersonal relationships of teenagers with world-ending threats. There are two kinds of weirdness: good weirdness comes when storylines start to explore goofy concepts like those from the original comics, while bad weirdness comes from beloved characters thrust into uncomfortable situations. Smallville tries to lean into good weirdness, but sometimes the bad kind seeps through.

Ron Ely, the hunky and handsome Texas native who portrayed the Lord of the Jungle on the first Tarzan series for television, has died, his daughter Kirsten told Fox News Digital. He was 86.
He died Sept. 29 at the home of one of his daughters near Santa Barbara, The New York Times reported.

Superman’s canine best friend will be joining him onscreen next year.
Krypto the Superdog will appear in James Gunn’s upcoming “Superman,” the director confirmed on social media Tuesday. He made the announcement in honor of October being Adopt a Shelter Dog month.
“Krypto arrives on screens in Superman this summer,” Gunn wrote. “Krypto was inspired by our dog Ozu, who we adopted shortly after I started writing Superman. Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture – he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him. I remember thinking, ‘Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?’ – and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life.

Now that the fourth and final season of Superman & Lois is upon us, it's time that we address the elephant in the room. Alex Garfin is great as Jordan Kent, there's no doubt about that, but it feels like the character himself hasn't grown too much since his family first moved to Smallville. Sure, Jordan has developed powers, learned that he can't always get what he wants, and has become Kansas' latest "Superboy," but as far as impulse control is concerned, Jordan has basically none. Never has that more been on display than now, especially now that his father is gone.

As such, the Kent family are in a much more precarious position than ever before, since Lex Luthor remains committed to targeting them in order to get revenge on Lois Lane.
Despite his superhuman powers, this overarching setup is especially worrying for Jordan Kent, who'd been training to at least partially step into his dad's shoes. While a hologram Clark is revealed in the Fortress Of Solitude, his ability to provide guidance isn't quite the same as the real in...

Warning: This article contains spoilers for Superman & Lois season 4, episode 1 & 2.Superman & Lois season 4 has been released, and the first two episodes of the DC series make its version of Superboy closer to Batman than the Man of Steel due to one tactic. The original plan for the Superman series was for it to run at least seven seasons, but due to changes at The CW, Superman & Lois' network, and DC, the hit show was canceled. Superman & Lois season 4's cast has suffered many cuts due to budget changes.
With a shorter cast of series regulars, Superman & Lois has focused more on a select few in each of its first two episodes. That, and the death of Tyler Hoechlin's Superman, have led to the DC show shining a spotlight on Clark Kent's sons. Being the only one of the two to have powers, Alex Garfin's Jordan Kent...

There have been a slew of cartoons to come out on Cartoon Network and other networks that featured animated shows that were killed for no apparent reason. Despite smooth productions, great storylines, and even sizable viewership, shows like Young Justice, Generator Rex, ThunderCats, and Green Lantern: The Animated Series just did not have what it takes to keep them on air.

While these shows had a lot of good storylines and great viewership behind them, action cartoons, especially the likes of Generator Rex and Ben 10, actually need one pillar to work out more than anything else: merchandise. The products that sustained these shows were usually toys, the sales of which would determine whether the investment behind the shows that were supposed to sell them was even worth it.

The following contains spoilers for Season 1 of Terminator Zero, now streaming on Netflix.
A major draw of the James Cameron Terminator movies and the sequels that are now out of canon is how they always raise more questions than answers by the time they conclude. A big part has to do with the anchor of the franchise. This is that everything is in a closed loop; one where time paradoxes occur.
That's the risk one takes with sci-fi properties that bend space and time. Season 1 of Terminator Zero raises many mysteries in the same manner. However, these burning questions don't just involve time-travel; they involve character motivations over a slew of different eras. With that in mind, here are the most pertinent questions left hanging after the eight episodes aired.
