A recent Los Angeles Dodgers and San Francisco Giants game featured a surprise shoutout to JoJos Bizarre Adventure as MLB star Shohei Ohtani walked up to the plate, courtesy of Ohtani's wife Mamiko Tanaka in celebration of "Womens Night" at LA's Dodger Stadium.
Via Yahoo News (Jp), The latest Dodgers game saw star hitter and designated pitcher Shohei Ohtani walk up the plate to "Il vento doro," a song from the fourth season of JoJos Bizarre Adventure's "Golden Wind" arc. Chosen by the player's wife, Mamiko Tanaka, for "Womens Night," which saw the players enter to songs chosen by their partners. Ohtanis usual walk-up music of "The Show Goes On" by rapper Lupe Fiasco was swapped out for the Yugo Kanno piece, usually played when the heroes figure out the best trick or strategy to beat their adversarial stand users.

They've done what they've had to do to survive on AMC's The Walking Dead, brining hope and despair to palpable life on the small screen with gritty realism every week. Covered in grime, splattered in blood, and trudging down the sun-baked backroads and brush-bordered trails this season, the stellar cast and crew of The Walking Dead have paid their dues and then some, and now they're getting a tip of the cap in return with seven nominations for the 41st Annual Saturn Awards.
Andrew Lincoln, Norman Reedus, Emily Kinney, Melissa McBride, Chandler Riggs, and Andrew J. West have all earned nominations, with the TV series itself receiving one as well. Also recognized in this year's nominations is Scream Factory's Nightbreed: The Director's Cut Blu-ray, NBC's Hannibal TV series, Only Lovers Left Alive, and many more.

This weekend is a box office wild card.
Liam Neeson is an earnings force unto himself, and his latest turn as an air marshal on a hijacked transatlantic flight in Non-Stop should evict The Lego Movie from its three-weekend stronghold on the No. 1 spot. But the big, looming unknown is Mark Burnett and Roma Downey’s Son of God. Its weekend prospects have analysts stumped, with estimates ranging anywhere from $12 million to $30 million. And even the high end of that could be wildly off.
With that said, here’s how things might play out. And, to change things up a bit,...

I had a great time at last night's Critics' Choice Movie Awards at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. I'm a proud voting member of the Broadcast Film Critics Association and I always look forward to our Movie Awards!
It was a great night with an equally great party vibe, and all the stars were relaxed as they imbibe on cocktails and eat fantastic food.
But the best part of the evening was the awards show itself (I always feel that the Critics' Choice is a much better Oscar predictor than the Golden Globes) where Alfonso Cuaron's "Gravity" triumphed in all the technical categories including Best Director and "12 Years a Slave" received the top honor of Best Picture with Lupita Nyong'o beating "American Hustle's" Jennifer Lawrence for the Best Supporting Actress trophy.

The critics have spoken, and 12 Years a Slave has been named Best Picture of the Year at the 19th Annual Critics' Choice Awards.
Slave beat out American Hustle, Her, Gravity, Captain Phillips, Nebraska, The Wolf of Wall Street, Saving Mr. Banks, Inside Llewyn Davis and Dallas Buyers Club at a ceremony that came just hours after the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences named their nominations for this year's Oscars.
Getting off on a comedic foot, Anchorman 2 stars Christina Applegate and James Marsden presented the award for Best Actor in a Comedy Movie to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf Of Wall Street, while Amy Adams was named Best Actress in a Comedy for American Hustle, which also won the award for Best Comedy Movie.

Oscar nominations 2014: Quite a few surprises (photo: Best Actress Oscar nominee Amy Adams in ‘American Hustle’) The Oscar 2014 nominations were announced early on Thursday morning, January 16, at the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Samuel Goldwyn Theater. Was Amy Adams shortlisted for American Hustle? Did Meryl Streep break another Oscar record? Did Robert Redford nearly break the record for longest gap between nominations in the acting categories? Was Jennifer Lawrence snubbed? Did Scarlett Johansson make Oscar history for her voice performance as Joaquin Phoenix’s love interest in Her? Was Peter Jackson-Ian McKellen’s The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug shortlisted in the technical categories? Well, below you’ll find the answers to all these questions. Be prepared: as usual, there were quite a few surprises. (You can compare the Academy’s choices to our Oscar 2014 predictions.) Full list of Oscar 2014 nominations Best Picture: American Hustle,...

The 2014 Oscar nominations were announced this morning and I have already made note of some of the "surprise" omissions in my post with the complete list of nominees, but it's always better to open up a new thread to look at little closer and see what surprises the Academy had to offer. Now I know the headline uses the word "snub", but that's just more out of familiarity since there really isn't anything such as a snub as there are only so many slots to be filled, which is why when making predictions for the nominees if the films and performances you predicted would be nominated didn't get in, they were probably replaced by those films you almost predicted would be nominated. That said, let's go down the line shall wec Best Picture No big surprises here unless you look at the nominations as a whole, which would be to...

With the awards season very much in full swing, the 2014 Golden Globes were held out in Beverly Hills last night, with Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosting the event once more.
The awards are noted for being one of the few major prizes to divide the categories by genre – i.e. giving one for Drama and one for Musical or Comedy in the Motion Picture Categories. So using them to predict what comes next in the likes of the BAFTAs and the Oscars can naturally be difficult. Regardless, it’s clear that Steve McQueen’s 12 Years a Slave and David O. Russell’s American Hustle were big winners last night, and both continue to build momentum towards the awards still to come.
As we eagerly await the Oscar nominations announcement later this week, here’s the full list of winners from last night’s 2014 Golden Globes. A great way to start the week.

12 Years a Slave, nominated for seven Golden Globe Awards, narrowly avoided getting shut out when it took home the night’s final and biggest prize for Best Drama. Steve McQueen’s period slave drama looked to be out of favor with the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, with Gravity’s Alfonso Cuaron winning for Best Director, Her’s Spike Jonze winning for Best Screenplay, and the Dallas Buyers Club duo of Matthew McConaughey and Jared Leto winning the acting awards. But when Johnny Depp announced the big prize, 12 Years a Slave came out on top.

Golden Globes 2014 predictions: ‘American Hustle’ tops? (photo: Amy Adams in ‘American Hustle’) The winners of the 2014 Golden Globes will be announced on Sunday, January 12, 2014 — the same day that two-time Oscar winner Luise Rainer (The Great Ziegfeld, The Good Earth) turns 104 years old. (I’d have said "cosmic," except that Luise Rainer has never won or been nominated for a Golden Globe.) Now, who’s going to take home the dozen or so Golden Globes in the Motion Picture categories? Curiously, there’s no absolute, clear-cut favorite in any of them, except perhaps for David O. Russell’s American Hustle in the Best Comedy or Musical category, even though (or perhaps because) Russell’s ’70s throwback film is not exactly a comedy — and it’s certainly not a musical. (See full list of 2014 Golden Globes nominees.) But who cares about the Golden Globes, anyway? They’re not important. Well, whether or not you find them important,...

This Sunday the first major award show, The Golden Globes, is set to air and will give us our first true look at what the awards season might bare out. With Oscar nomination being announced on Thursday, the Globes might be the first place to convince people to put you down to win the big prize. So who will win at the Globes? I took a look at the nominations and offered some predictions and analysis.
Motion Pictures
Best Drama
12 Years a Slave
Captain Phillips
Gravity
Philomena
Rush
Analysis: 12 Years a Slave should have this in the bag But the HFPA has shown willingness to award big films (they gave the prize to Avatar in 2009) so don’t count out a Gravity win here.
Best Musical/Comedy
American Hustle
Her
Inside Lleweyn Davis
Nebraska
The Wolf of Wall Street
Analysis: American Hustle has 7 nominations, the most of any comedy.

The 2014 Golden Globe Awards will take place this Sunday, January 12 and we will be live-blogging and announcing the winners as they happen, but I felt before we do that we may as well revisit the nominees and attempt to do a little predicting. I should warn you, predicting the Golden Globes is something I find near impossible so if you're the betting type I'm not sure I would look at these predictions as anything more than a bit of fun to ponder and debate in the comments below. It's not like predicting the Oscars, where you know the people deciding the awards. Who exactly is the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA)c In fact, when I mention the HFPA did you even know they were the ones that put on the Golden Globes or did you think it was something more prestigiousc Truth of the matter is, as far as I know,...

Just a quick scan down the list below reveals an extraordinary breadth of genres and subject matters, from imposing, expensive science fiction films to quiet, intimate stories about men at sea on boats or outlaws breaking out of prison to be with their wives. My 2013 retrospective is dominated by strong character pieces, where an individual rises or falls due to the extraordinary circumstances of their surroundings. No other film encapsulates this philosophy more than Steve McQueen's brilliant adaptation of 12 Years a Slave, which kicks off my 10 Ten Movies of 2013. Without further ado, here is the rest of my list.
Top Ten Films of 2013
112 Years a Slave
Steve McQueen's adaptation of Solomon Northup's 12 Years a Slave is the best film of 2013 and the best movie ever made about slavery in the United States. Chiwetel Ejiofor wins the Best Actor Oscar as Northup in this true story of an upstate New York musician who is lured, drugged, and sold into slavery. A harrowing story, 12 Years a Slave is not a brow beating epic with grand visuals and lengthy monologues. It looks at the small story of a free man's brutal incarceration of servitude in the antebellum south.

’12 Years a Slave’: 2013 movie about slavery in the American South is Best Film of the year for some U.S. critics’ groups (photo: Chiwetel Ejiofor in ’12 Years a Slave’) Directed by Steve McQueen and starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, 12 Years a Slave remains one of the favorites — perhaps the favorite 2013 release — among U.S.-based critics’ groups. Below is the list of winners from four of those: the Austin Film Critics Association, the Southeastern Film Critics Association, the Florida Film Critics Circle, and the Las Vegas Film Critics Society. Their winners were announced within the last week or so. McQueen’s slavery drama was the top choice of three of the aforementioned groups. The one exception was the Austin Film Critics, who went for Spike Jonze’s Her, in which Joaquin Phoenix falls in love with a computer with Scarlett Johansson’s voice. In the acting categories, 12 Years a Slave‘s...

Steve McQueen and David O Russell's movies each land 13 nominations, while Gravity takes 10 and four other key contenders make do with six
Two of the key bruisers of contemporary cinema are to square up against each other at this year's Critics Circle awards. In the red corner: Steve McQueen, whose 12 Years a Slave – a devastating drama about deep south slavery – has landed 13 nominations. And in the blue: David O Russell with American Hustle, an exuberant comedy drama about the FBI Abscam con of the 1970s, which has taken the same number.
This leaves Gravity trailing with 10 nominations, while Captain Phillips, Her, Nebraska and The Wolf of Wall Street all take six. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug came in with five, while August: Osage County, Enough Said, Iron Man 3 and Rush took three.

‘Her’ movie tops 2013 San Diego Film Critics Awards (Joaquin Phoenix in ‘Her’) The San Diego Film Critics Society has released its list of 2013 nominees and winners. The nominations themselves were quite eclectic, ranging from Best Actress nominee Brie Larson for Short Term 12 to Best Film nominee Gravity. The list of winners, however, tended to be more mainstream. For instance, Warner Bros.’ Spike Jonze-directed Her, starring Joaquin Phoenix as a man who falls in love with a Scarlett Johansson-voiced computer, was chosen as the Best Film of 2013, in addition to receiving honors for Best Original Screenplay (also Spike Jonze) and Best Score (Arcade Fire). Alfonso Cuarón was the Best Director for another Warner Bros. release, Gravity, a 3D space action melodrama about an astronaut and bereaved Mom (Sandra Bullock) who learns that, no matter what, Life Is Worth Living. George Clooney co-stars. Among the other San Diego Film...

Was 2013 a weak year for film scores? I feel like it was. At least in terms of the scores that Oscar's music branch would pay attention to. I mean, four of my favourite scores of the year aren't even eligible! They would be Great Expectations (Richard Hartley), A Touch of Sin (Giong Lim), Lore (Max Richter - my no. 1 from 2012, but not released in Us until this year), and Only God Forgives (Cliff Martinez). Also not eligible for whatever reasons are Lone Survivor (Stephen Jablonsky), Frozen, Inside Llewyn Davis (T-Bone Burnett), and Nebraska (Mark Orton) - sorry Anne Marie!
I'm sure there is plenty of excellent music featured amongst this year's 141 (the documentary win this year's bragging rights, then) eligible scores, but Oscar will only look at about 10 or 12. Sorry Joseph Bishara - your abrasive strings on Insidious: Chapter 2 and The Conjuring just won't factor despite their effectiveness. Sorry...

The nominations are out for the 2014 Golden Globe Awards! I'm not surprised by what was nominated. I will say however, having just seen Saving Mr. Banks, I'm a little disappointed it didn't get more nominations. It was just such a phenomenal film. I'm happy that that Emma Thompson got nominated for Best Actress, but the movie deserved a Best Picture nomination, and if I had to swap out one of the movies it would be Captain Phillips, which Tom Hanks was also nominated for. Then, as much as I enjoyed the film Rush, I'm not sure it is Best Picture material either. It will be interesting to see who wins, but I'd put my money on Gravity or 12 Years a Slave. As for the TV aspect of the awards, Showtime's Homeland got completely snubbed!
Check out the full list of nominations below! Who do you want to see win?
