This article contains spoilers for "MaXXXine."
Writer/director Ti West trilogy of films starring Mia Goth — "X," "Pearl," and now "MaXXXine" — are, first and foremost, a solid trio of character-based horror films. Taken at face value, they tell an eerie, sexy, and violent cautionary tale about two women, Pearl and Maxine (both played by Goth), whose ambitions for stardom lead them to commit sinful acts.
Taken metaphorically, however, the films have a ton to say about the history of cinema itself, with a particular focus on the tense relationship between prurience and art that's existed within the medium since its inception. Horror movies and pornographic films have long been associated with each other, and West draws on that connection to explore the effects cinema has on everything from standards of youth and beauty -- particularly when it comes to women -- as well as the American Dream of going from rags to riches.

The 1980s were a heyday for Hollywood horror movies thanks to a slasher boom generating a roster of icons, sexy vampires like "The Lost Boys" and "Fright Night," and movies like "The Shining" that appeal to audiences beyond the Real Sickos. But never fear, Sicko Cinema was alive and well throughout the decade, even if your average movie fan isn't familiar with Gary Sherman's "Vice Squad," Katt Shea's "Stripped to Kill," or Robert Vincent O'Neil's "Angel." These were films that were given exponentially smaller budgets and focused on communities deemed too risqué or taboo for the status quo. Deemed "trashy," "exploitative," or "low-brow," these schlock-fests [complimentary] were some of the last vestiges of explicit, fearlessly envelope-pushing cinematic storytelling. As far as I'm concerned, there's been a void ever since.

Here’s a list of more than 50 different horror movies that are currently streaming for free on both the Tubi and Vudu platforms, featuring slashers, creature features, sci-fi/horror mash-ups, cult classics, and films from the likes of George A. The only caveat is that you have to endure some advertisements and then you’re all set with endless terror-filled entertainment choices for this Memorial Day Weekend. Also, keep in mind that this list doesn’t include all the great horror that’s currently streaming on both services, so be sure to poke around to see all the excellent other genre films they offer as well.

Nancy Drew is a lucrative literary franchise, so naturally Hollywood would consider it for a film franchise. The latest incarnation of Nancy Drew came from a surprising source. Well, it’s not so surprising that Ellen Degeneres wanted to produce a Nancy Drew movie under her Very Good Pictures banner, but Katt Shea, director of ‘80s […]

Brian DePalma’s Carrie (1976) has cast a very wide shadow since it hit theatres. Many horror films have used the trope of telekinesis for the greater bad following its release, including Jennifer, The Fury, Patrick, The Medusa Touch (all ’78), Scanners (’81), and several more. (You can’t make me mention Friday the 13th Part VII. Oh. Dammit.) Of course, television is anything if not inclusive, and the networks scrambled to come up with their own takes on teenage angst. However, ABC’s The Initiation of Sarah (1978) took a slightly different tact and sent the girl off to college – and ended up serving a strong dose of female empowerment.
First broadcast on Monday, February 6th, Sarah had her work cut out, not so much from NBC, who provided their own Monday Night at the Movies, but from CBS’ juggernaut of M*A*S*H/One Day at a Time. Regardless of ratings,...

February was Women in Horror Recognition Month and there are plenty of women that we recognize in horror year round.
Consider the “Scream Queens” we all know and love—Michelle Bauer, Janet Leigh, Jamie Lee Curtis, Linnea Quigley, Marilyn Burns, Elsa Lanchester, Brinke Stevens, Camille Keaton, Sybil Danning, Ingrid Pitt, Barbara Steele, Fay Wray, and Beverly Garland.
But there are countless other women, actresses, writers, directors, who you may not know and don’t get proper recognition.
Here's a short list of some female directors that deserve to be mentioned.
Barbara Peters - Humanoids From The Deep (1980)
Katt Shea - Stripped To Kill (1987), Dance Of The Damned (1988), Poison Ivy (1992)
Ida Lupino - The Hitch Hiker (1953)
Elizabeth Fies - The Commune (2009)
Jennifer Chambers Lynch - Boxing Helena (1993)
Fran Robel Kuzui - Buffy The Vampire Slayer 1992)

The 1970s was a significant decade in the history of American cinema. The sometimes wild experimentation of the avant garde movement of the 1960s had pretty much disappeared by the mid 70s. The decade gave birth to the adult film industry (Deep Throat), the modern slasher film (the one-two punch of Halloween and Friday The 13th), and the Hollywood blockbuster (Jaws and later Star Wars). The exploitation film subgenre (blaxploitation, sexploitation, etc.) peaked and gave way to teen comedies and horror films. The Western was all but dead. However, in 1976 American International Pictures released a wonderfully offbeat and satisfying Western comedy into this rapidly changing marketplace, The Great Scout And Cathouse Thursday, which regrettably is Not available on DVD.

The List, which details a group of young teenage males who form a list of those that they want to seek revenge on, has been delayed yet again. The film which was originally set to start filming in summer 2010 was delayed till October 2010. It has been delayed yet again until spring 2011.
According to director Katt Shea, the money is still in place for The List and that the script will be filmed just not till spring 2011. Knowing Katt Shea's penchant for strong characterizations, honest dialogue, timely material and an ability to draw strong performances from her cast, The List should be something to look forward to. This will mark the director's first film after a ten year absence. Noteworthy projects in the past include Stripped To Kill, Poison Ivy and The Rage: Carrie II.
Cast members currently attached to The List include Haley Bennett, Evan Peters, Louis Gossett Jr.,...

A double feature screening of director Katt Shea's Stripped to Kill and Poison Ivy hosted by FanGirlTastic at the Silent Movie Theater in Hollywood on Oct 24th, 2010 at 7:30 Pm.
Katt Shea, in a story that sounds like it could belong to one of the sexy but tough heroines in her films, rolled into Hollywood when she was only ninteen years old. After brief stints modelling and studying at UCLA, she began to work in the Corman exploitation factory/film school as an actress, but boldly cornered Roger with an idea so good that she ended up writing, and then directing it, for him. Since then, she’s crafted a career in which her “trash” has been treasured in retrospectives at classy joints like MoMA and the British Film Institute. Tonight we’ll be privileged to have Katt her in our midst to...
