May the odds be ever in your favor – again! “The Hunger Games” franchise from author Suzanne Collins has entered a new era as its latest book, “Sunrise on the Reaping,” hit shelves this week.
The prequel novel follows a young version of Katniss and Peeta’s mentor Haymitch Abernathy, played by Woody Harrelson in the films, as he emerges as the victor in the 50th annual Hunger Games. A film adaptation from Lionsgate was announced at the same time as the book.
With five books, six films and even an upcoming stage adaptation set for London this October, there’s no sign of slowing down for this juggernaut dystopian franchise. The staying power of Panem was showcased at a midnight release party at the Barnes & Noble in Union Square in New York City on Monday, one of hundreds held across the country for the Scholastic launch.

Lifelong Democrat George Clooney was undoubtably upset that Kamala Harris lost the presidential election. But the A-lister isn’t dwelling in his negative emotions.
“What am I supposed to do — storm the f–king Capitol? It didn’t work out, that’s what happens. It’s part of democracy,” Clooney told Stephen Colbert on Tuesday night. “Most of us still like each other. We’re going to get through it.”
Clooney then brought up his son, who loves to play chess but is often beaten by other kids. Whenever that happens, Clooney tells him not to get upset but to instead tell his rivals, “Good game and I’ll get you next time.”
“You’ve got to live by those rules, which is ‘All right, good for you. I hope you do well because our country needs it. And then we’ll meet you in three and a half years...

Due to cold temperatures on Monday, Donald Trump’s inauguration was moved indoors, rendering the tickets of thousands of fans who flew out to participate in the event useless. For Seth Meyers, that was pretty ironic, considering those same supporters had no trouble accessing government buildings when Trump left office.
To kick off his “A Closer Look” segment during “Late Night” on Monday, Meyers first danced around the subject of Trump’s inauguration, joking that the biggest story of the day was either TikTok returning after less than 24 hours, Taylor Swift and Caitlin Clark hanging out at a Chiefs game together, or Timothée Chalamet receiving a fine for riding a bike to the London premiere of “A Complete Unknown.”
In the end though, he begrudgingly got into the events of the inauguration, immediately zeroing in on Trump supporters being left out in the cold, literally, when the event moved indoors.

The Hunger Games setting of Panem is split into The Capitol and thirteen districts. The Capitol houses the country's ruling class in lives of luxury, as well as their servants. By contrast, the districts are home to impoverished and oppressed people who produce all of Panem's goods and see to the nation's needs. Although Panem refers to itself as a democratic constitutional republic, its government can best be described as an authoritarian dictatorship.
In other words, Panem uses harsh conditions and limited contact between the districts to curtail the possibility of rebellion. Each district is responsible for one essential good or service provided to the Capitol, with limited opportunities outside these industries. As a result, each one has a solid cultural identity around their common trade, with some having hidden enterprises outside the public eye.

Warning! Spoilers for Netflix's Uglies and Scott Westerfeld's continued book series ahead!
An interesting theory suggests that Netflix's new sci-fi movie, Uglies, is secretly a prequel to Katniss Everdeen's story in The Hunger Games. The 2024 dystopian movie is based on the book of the same name by author Scott Westerfeld, which was first released in 2005. Since The Hunger Games was written by Suzanne Collins, and the first book was released in 2008, these two stories can't actually be directly related. However, it's interesting to consider how they might fit together.
Like Netflix's adaptation, the Uglies book series follows a 15-year-old girl, Tally, who lives in a future centuries after the near collapse of human civilization. To combat humanity's destruction of the planet and itself, those who survived the apocalypse devised a plan to turn everyone into docile and compliant citizens, therefore allowing for a utopia. The dystopian sci-fi film "Logan's Run" is set in a supposedly idyllic future society where residents above 30 mysteriously disappear. The hedonistic metropolis is enclosed by a dome, and those who choose to explore the world outside — and the secrets that it holds — are labeled "runners." Michael York stars in the film as the titular protagonist, an undercover police officer who infiltrates the runners only to find that he, too, opposes the laws that he once worked to uphold and helps them lead an uprising.
"Logan's Run" was nominated for its cinematography and set decoration in the 1977 Academy Awards. It even received a special achievement award for its visual effects. The futuristic set and costume design were almost identical to the smash-hit sci-fi adventure film "Star Wars: Episode IV -- A New Hope," which was released the following year. It's possible that "Star Wars" even drew inspiration from the 1976 film. However,...

Donald Trump announced his next piece of memorabilia last week, this time coming in the form of golden sneakers, priced at almost $400. And though “The View” hosts were gobsmacked at the price, Joy Behar did guess at one perk of the shoes.
“Well, maybe his supporters who buy them will be able to run faster from the Capitol Police in these sneakers,” she joked.
The shoes came up as part of the first Hot Topic of the day, in which the women discussed how Trump was ordered to pay $355 million in the verdict of his New York civil fraud trial. But, looking at the footwear, host Sunny Hostin couldn’t help but notice that they looked awful familiar.

Quick Links What Is the History of Panem in The Hunger Games? The World of The Hunger Games Beyond Panem Life Outside Panem Remains Untouched
Popular series The Hunger Games is set in the dystopian nation of Panem, which is composed of numerous districts. Ruling the country is the tyrannical Capitol, which enforces its will upon the less-than elite. This manifests in the Hunger Games themselves, with the citizens of the districts forced to engage in this barbaric practice at the behest of The Capitol. Though the bloody arena of these battles are frequently focused upon, the series never really explores what's outside the sovereign state.
As the only known home for humanity following the nuclear wars and climate change that decimated the planet, Panem's citizens believe life simply does not exist outside their walls. In both the Hunger Games novels and movies, the world outside of Panem is rarely mentioned.

The Hunger Games franchise's success has sparked renewed interest in the series' mythology, including the Panem map and its 13 Districts. Most of the information about the Districts comes from Katniss Everdeen's point of view, resulting in some gaps in knowledge. Panem is a dystopian nation that rose from the ashes of natural disasters and wars, governed by President Snow and characterized by a stark divide between The Capitol and the outer Districts.

Things once again got physical in Congress this week, so “The Daily Show” decided to report straight from the middle of the action on Wednesday night. Unfortunately for correspondent Desi Lydic, that meant some torn clothes and a clear black eye, because you “can’t report on congressional fight club without joining it.”
Before Lydic entered the scene though, guest host Leslie Jones shamed the near-brawls, and specifically called out Kevin McCarthy, who purportedly elbowed a Republican congressman who voted him out in the kidneys.
“Oh my God, you guys are such children. You act like 5-year-olds, this is insane,” Jones scolded. “Listen, I know what it’s like to want to fight a co-worker. But don’t do that at work! You wait for them in the parking lot like a responsible adult!”
From there, Jones handed things over to Lydic, reporting from the halls of the Capitol. But the moment she appeared on-screen,...

Actress Rachel Zegler, who stars as District 12 tribute Lucy Gray Baird in the upcoming ‘The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’ film, has recalled her very first time venturing to the Capitol of Panem (the franchise’s metropolis) just over 10 years ago.
“I went with my sister and my mom to the theatre to see it,” Zegler said of her movie-going experience, reports People magazine. Although she was prepared, she couldn’t say the same for another audience member. “The woman next to my sister had never read the books or seen the film before, and when the mutts came out, she started screaming, ‘What’s gonna happen next?’” she shared.
Most ‘Hunger Game’ fans would know that mutts, also known as muttations, are ferocious creatures created by The Capitol to add a bit of excitement for those watching the tributes as they try to survive the games. “And...

Copycat movies have been a thing forever. You can look at the broader scope and consider that most slasher movies became copycat in one way or another. A supernatural killer, excessive gore and nudity, and even the high body counts. That style of horror movies could become a dime a dozen. Twin films are similar, but they are made at roughly the same time and actually trying to release first to beat the other to market so as to not be seen as an attempted clone of the other studios idea. Boiling it down even further, some copycats go beyond just the themes and even try to take direct elements from the previous movie that made money.

The Hunger Games pays unusually close attention to propaganda, and how it sways the masses in its future dystopia. It's a common part of such stories -- George Orwell devoted a great of time to it in his seminal novel 1984 -- but The Hunger Games adds a fascinating wrinkle: celebrities, not all of whom wish to be the center of attention. That connects its story more closely to the contemporary world, where everyone really is famous for 15 minutes.
That includes a camera crew and director who follow Katniss Everdeen around during the saga's final act, recording her engagements with the forces of the tyrannical Capitol. Messalla, played by Evan Ross, works as a production assistant and helps keep Katniss safe during The Hunger Games' climactic revolt. The actor does the same job that so many of the movies' supporting figures do: create a fleshed-out character with just a few precious minutes of screen time.

“Morning Joe” slammed the GOP’s “deeply unserious” calls for a red state secession, calling it a money-making ploy to appeal to far-right donors.
On Monday morning, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) tweeted that “We need a national divorce. We need to separate by red states and blue states and shrink the federal government,” drawing furious responses from the left and more moderate right.
“This is so laughable because blue states as we all know are the donor states, or the states where taxpayers take it on the chin to take care of districts like Marjorie Taylor Greene’s, to take care of districts across taxes where Ted Cruz talks about secession,” host Joe Scarborough said on Tuesday’s episode of “Morning Joe.”
“What is it that so deeply offends [Republicans], like three trans athletes in Utah want to swim? Is that real?” he asked guest commentator Charlie Sykes.

One year after the fact, the uprising that took place, before millions of horrified and amazed eyes, at the U.S. Capitol in Washington, D.C., on Jan. 6, 2021 — a protest, an insurrection, a riot, an act of mass vandalism, a piece of made-for-the-media guerrilla theater, and a primal assault on democracy — looks, if anything, even scarier now than it did then.
A group of anarchists posing as freedom fighters, busting into the Capitol, threatening and committing violence, taking cues (one almost wants to say orders) from on high — that is, from the President of the United States. However ramshackle it may have been in execution, this was an attempted coup, and the meaning of it should never be far from our minds. The reason you could say it’s scarier now is that the riot, at the time, was contained; it was a slipshod coup that failed. But with a year of hindsight,...

Lt. Michael Byrd, the U.S. Capitol Police officer who shot and killed Ashli Babbitt during the Jan. 6 insurrection, is telling his side of the story.
Byrd sat down with NBC’s Lester Holt for a revealing interview that aired on the network on Thursday. In it, he recounted the events of the fateful day a horde of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol and opened up about the fallout he’s faced afterward.
Byrd said that the shot he fired at Babbitt’s shoulder was the first in his 28 years as an officer.
“I spent countless years preparing for such a moment. You ultimately hope that moment never occurs but you prepare as best you can,” he told Holt. “I know that day, I saved countless lives. I know members of Congress, as well as my fellow officers and staff, were in jeopardy and in serious danger and that’s my job.
