the lovely Laure awaits the attentions of both

I nearly didn't watch this after reading the very few IMDb reviews which seemed to suggest the film was dull, uninteresting and suitable for twelve year olds. Something intrigued me, however, and I couldn't see a Trintignant film was likely to be completely without merit. In fact this is a must see film, yes, Trintignant is great and the other two leads, Carole Laure and Richard Berry are also very good and the tale is so well told. Yes, it is understated and I guess i wouldn't describe it as 'exciting' or 'fast paced' but I was hooked from the start and most intrigued for the duration. Nothing is overtly explained and we just have to watch as Berry as the lonely serial killer goes about his stuff, Trintignant similarly about his, as a most unorthodox cop, and the lovely Laure awaits the attentions of both. Some difficult territory explored and welcome recognition that desire and love and friendship do not all line up as we might wish.

    Us and them.

A serial killer who is just passing through..At the time this intellectual thriller was a PG -18!Well today...time has passed and I'm not even sure it would get a PG-12.

The director had big ambitions.Richard Berry portrays a serial killer with frames of mind.A smiling nice one searching for compassion, affection, company .No dramatization,no suspense, the viewer is supposed to find the killer's behavior "normal" .There's just one problem:we know nothing about the gentle criminal's background and all that he does does not concern us .Carole Laure's part is not credible either. She's supposed to be a great star, but she does not have any bodyguards, wherever she goes. And,as one of the cops points out,she might (must) have appreciated to be used as a bait. And what cops! All are senseless brutes, always bullying their suspects. There's no difference -that's what the flick tends to prove- between us (the Police) and them (the criminals).

This is a deadly dull film.
