Subhash K Jha celebrates 19 Years of Karan Johar’s Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna, which starred Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherjee, Abhishek Bachchan, Preity Zinta, Kirron Kher and Amitabh Bachchan in a new installment of This Day That Year.
Sometimes you hold a film close to your heart not because the characters embrace you, but for the opposite reason. The four protagonists who colonize Karan Johar quadrangular marital romance are so distanced from their spouses and their dormant desires, you wonder why they got married in the second place!
…Or why any two people decide to opt for what many would say is an obsolete institution in the first place!!
Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna (Kank) is indeed a definite sign of Karan Johar maturation as an artiste and a filmmaker. This is a film that derives its inspiration energy from Karan’s favourite filmmaker Yash Chopra’s interesting but abortive Silsila.

Muzaffar Ali’s Umrao Jaan returns to movie theatres 44 years after release. There doesn’t seem to be much interest in the project. The Kotha culture which this exquisite film embraces is no more of interest to moviegoers.
1981 was the year of realistic cinema, with Smita Patil in Marathi and Hindi in Jabber Patel’s Subah, Saritha in K. Balachander’s Tamil Thaneer Thaneer and Jennifer Kendal in 36 Chowringhee Lane, pulling out all stops.
But Rekha as Umrao Jaan was extra-special. She proved she was the Chosen One. Umrao Jaan was the story of a restless woman whose wandering soul takes her through warm and robust relationships with a bashful Nawab (Farooq Shaikh), her childhood friend and admirer (Naseeruddin Shah) and a long-haired dacoit (Raj Babbar).
There’s a touch of dangerous poetry in the presentation, as though underneath all the posturings of decorum these characters are hungering for the...

Silvat (2018):
Playing a Muslim darzi in Tanuja Chandra 40-minute film situated in the crowded gully of what looks like Mumbai’s Haji Ali locality, Kartik is every bit Anwar, the shy sensitive tailor who develops a secret passion for his favourite client: a lonely abandoned wife Noor (Meher Mistry) whose husband has migrated to Riyadh for a job with nary a glance back for the woman he has left behind. The focus of the passionate plot, pulsating with unspoken ardour, is Noor. But it’s Kartik’s Anwar who silently steals the show. There is no exhibition of outward passion here. And yet so much is said through Anwar’s eyes. Every stolen glance is laden with longing. The film is shot on location in a Muslim locality with streetside vendors frying parathas and malpuas,...

The iconic partnership of Salim-Javed, which gave Indian cinema blockbuster movies like Sholay, Zanjeer, Deewar, Don, and many others, broke up in 1982. This moment changed the landscape of Hindi cinema, as Javed Akhtar went on to work as a lyricist for Hindi songs, while Salim Khan worked as a solo screenwriter for a few films till 1996, after which he stopped working altogether.. The duo never got back to work on any other movie.
Javed Akhtar initiated the decision to split, but Salim Khan accepted it maturely without causing any friction in their relationship. However, a heartbreak was inevitable for Salim Khan, and it was Salman Khan, who was a child then, and he saw it through his own eyes.

Why Did Rekha Never Work With Amitabh Bachchan After Silsila? (Photo Credit – YouTube)
Bollywood legends Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha’s rumoured relationship has always been a topic of discussion in the industry. Their alleged romance began on the sets of Do Anjaane. Bachchan was already married to Jaya Bhaduri at the time, and Rekha got the title of ‘other woman.’ They last worked together in Silsila, and the audience loved their on-screen chemistry.
Rekha Said Not Working With Amitabh Bachchan After Silsila Was Her Own Loss
In an interview with Filmfare, Rekha reflected on her decision not to work with Big B and called it her ‘own loss.’ “My loss is that I didn’t get a chance to share the phenomenal growth of Amitji as an actor. The only rational answer that I can think of is that the wait to be able to co-star with Amitji is worth it.

Actor Dhaba Struggle Story (Photo Credit – Instagram)
Sanjay Mishra took a long and rough walk in Bollywood. His first film, Oh Darling! Yeh Hai India! was released in 1995 and also starred Shah Rukh Khan. A debut like this ought to have been his ticket to lead roles, but he continued to lose out on good opportunities. On a very small scale, he did what he could to remain in the spotlight, appearing in films like Satya and Dil Se.
Slowly, light began shining on him in 1999, after he had done an advertisement for the Cricket World Cup in which he portrayed Apple Singh. His popularity rose with the hit series Office Office, where he proved himself to fit well in films of the comedy genre-Golmaal, Bunty Aur Babli, and All the Best.
However, personal adversities kept trailing his success in humor. The death of his father in the early 2000s devastated him.

What Did Anurag Kashyap Say About John Abraham’s The Diplomat? (Photo Credit – Instagram)
John Abraham has become one of Bollywood’s leading faces in action and patriotic films. From Dhoom (2004), Force (2011), Madras Cafe (2013), to Parmanu (2018), and Batla House (2019), John’s filmography is dominated by intense, adrenaline-pumping roles. His ability to command the screen with his physicality and intense performances has made him a go-to choice for action-packed entertainers.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day, Subhash K Jha asked Filmistan what their favorite prem kahaani films are and the answers were amazing!
Amitabh Bachchan:
“Guru Dutt’s Kagaz Ke Phool: poignant and incredible theme, most lingering visuals, music, performances, and the ethereal Waheedaji, she’s my favourite; Anupama … “I just love the softness and simplicity of the film, its unexaggerated performances. It had a lyrical quality about it. This was a film by one of my favourite directors, Hrishikesh Mukherjee.” Bimal Roy’s Devdas: “I have always idolized Dilip Saab; his portrayal of doomed love in Devdas remains unparalleled.”
Sanjay Leela Bhansali:
“Bimal Roy’s Devdas, Vijay Anand’s Guide, Kamal Amrohi’s Pakeezah, K Asif’s Mughal-e-Azam, Satyajit Ray’s Charulata.”
Raakhee Gulzar:
“Satyajit Ray’s Charulata, Vijay Anand’s Guide, Raj Kapoor’s Sangam, Raj Kapoor’s Bobby, Yash Chopra’s Kabhi Kabhie.”

Continuing to shine the spotlight on the esteemed actress, Subhash K Jha revists Preity Zinta’s five finest films.
1. Kabhi Alvida Na Kehna (2006):
Sometimes, you hold a film close to your heart, not because the characters embrace you but because they do so for the opposite reason. The four protagonists who colonise Karan Johar’s marital romance are so distanced from their spouses and their dormant desires that you wonder why they got married! Or, why do any two people decide to opt for what many would say is an obsolete institution in the first place!! Kabhi Alvidaa Na Kehna (Kank) is indeed a definite sign of Karan Johar’s maturation as an artiste and a filmmaker. This is a film that derives its inspiration energy from Karan’s favourite filmmaker Yash Chopra’s interesting but abortive Silsila. Even more interesting is the casting… the role of the unfaithful...

There was a time when Javed Akhtar found a roof over his head at the Kamalistan studios in suburban Mumbai. During one of those nightly stopovers when he dreamt 70 mm dreams of success as a writer and poet, Javed came across Filmfare trophies of the legendary Meena Kumari. As he caressed those gorgeous statuesques he dreamt of having one of those for himself one day.
Son of the eminent poet Jan Nissar Akhtar, Javed’s dreams have been realized many times over. He is the recipient of every popular award in the country including the National award for best lyricist.
Javed’s career isn’t very easy to define or explain. His long stint as a screenwriter in partnership with Salim Khan and later, solo, yielded such mega-boxoffice bonanzas as Zanjeer, Deewaar, Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baraat(the film in which Aamir Khan was cast as a child) and Mr India.

Shah Rukh Khan’s Darr by Yash Chopra is one of the most significant films in the actor’s career. The movie also featured Sunny Deol and Juhi Chawla in leading roles, but Srk’s negative portrayal stole the show. However, apart from the movie, the feud between Sunny, Srk, and Yash Chopra made headlines, leading the lead actors to not speak to one another for years. Renowned action director Tinu Verma worked on that and has now spilled the between their infamous feud.
The movie was released in 1993, and Shah Rukh played an obsessive lover who goes crazy when Juhi’s character gets engaged to Sunny’s character. Deol played a navy officer in the film and reportedly disagreed with a certain action sequence. It allegedly contradicted his character’s capabilities as a naval officer.
