Because the movie is set in Boston, Massachusetts, USA and there is a methodical serial killer on the loose there, the picture evoked the earlier real life case and theatrical feature film L'Étrangleur de Boston (1968). The interval between the two pictures being made and first released was about thirteen years. In this latter movie, the murderer is not a strangler, but a slasher.
