Prior to the mid-late 2000s, anime as a concept was something many fans in English-speaking countries was not aware of. Even for those who did understand that certain shows they were watching – like Dragon Ball Z and Sailor Moon – were from Japan, they weren't always aware of just how many series they enjoyed were actually anime. The confusion certainly wasn't helped by the popularization of Western animated series adopting the style of anime.
For many kids growing up in the 90s and early 2000s, anime like Yu-Gi-Oh! and Pokémon just seemed to be uniquely styled animated series. Today, there's no secret about what they are, and almost everyone knows what anime is, but several localization companies of the era, including 4Kids Entertainment, worked hard to hide the truth. These series are all nostalgic favorites for countless fans, and they're worth re-visiting with a fresh perspective.

Nothing says horror quite like the white picket fences and child-rearing fantasies of American suburbia. The idea of introducing unfathomable evil to an idyllic, middle-class neighborhood has provided the foundation for horror classics such as Halloween and Nightmare on Elm Street — but it has also inspired a handful of newer films as well. Lorcan Finnegan's 2019 hit Vivariumis another take on the nightmares of suburban living and the nuclear family, and it's currently available to stream for free on Freevee.
A combined psychological horror and science fiction thriller, Vivarium follows Gemma and Tom, a young couple played by Jesse Eisenberg and Imogen Poots respectively. The two are looking to purchase their first home together, which leads them to encounter Martin, a strange real estate agent who takes them to a suburban development called Yonder, and disappears while the couple are exploring one of the houses. When Gemma and Tom attempt to leave,...

Lisa Wilcox has joined the cast of The Last Sleepover as Bethany Drake, a popular matriarch and pillar of the community.
The actress is best known for going toe-to-toe with Freddy Krueger as Alice Johnson in A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master and A Nightmare on Elm Street 5: The Dream Child.
“Whether someone loves the horror genre or not, everyone is familiar with the Nightmare franchise,” producer P.J. Starks (10/31) tells Bloody Disgusting. “As a fan of those films, having Lisa join the project is very cool. She is a solid talent, and the gravitas she brings due to her status in the horror community only elevates the excitement of making this movie.”
Sleepaway Camp‘s Felissa Rose also stars in the indie slasher alongside Spooky Madison, Audri Curtsinger, Jason Crowe, Ashe Parker, and Tj Moreschi.
A group of former friends reunite on the night of their 20-year high school reunion.

Cults, Kooks, and Conspiracy! You get it all in Elijah Sullivan’s rabbit hole documentary The Hole Story, which recently celebrated its World Premiere at the 2025 Slamdance Film Festival. Pulling at the ever-increasing threads of a local mystery, The Hole Story charts the evolution of a mysterious hole from a simple act of property destruction to a top-secret hunt for a mythical society. Cut like a true-crime documentary for those of us obsessed with the world’s most far-fetched barroom tales, The Hole Story is loaded with preposterous theories, kooky mountain folk, secret societies, and government cover-ups.
Picture this: One day, you’re walking through the woods in Nothern California’s idyllic forests, minding your own business. Suddenly, you spot something odd. It’s a giant, 60-foot hole big enough to bury a military tank! But what the hell is a massive hole like this doing out in the remote woodland?...

Celebrating 21 years of independent, breakout cinema and its first year in its new LA home, Slamdance 2025 kicks off for another edition of bold, original storytelling. First up on our docket is Cory Santilli’s In The Mouth, a crisp black-and-white comedy that operates on dream logic and plays by its own rules. A surprisingly personal film for how absurd it gives itself permission to be, but hands down one of the highlights of this year’s festival.
In The Mouth stars Colin Burgess (Inspector Ike) as an anxiety-riddled man named Merl, desperately looking for roommate. If he can’t scrape together some extra cash fast, he’s going to get evicted. But desperation doesn’t exactly attract the most trustworthy people and Merl is too occupied with his own problems to notice that he’s just welcomed a dangerous criminal into his home. It’s a real will-they/won’t-they-kill-eachother-in-their-sleep...

Spoiler Alert: Spoilers follow for The MonkeyEven in a genre so famous for iconic figures like Freddy Krueger and Jason Voorhees, Stephen King is arguably every bit as much a hot IP as the Nightmare or Friday franchises. Adaptations of his works like The Shining (even if King himself hated the film), Carrie, and Misery are almost unanimously seen as holy texts for horror fans, and there’s no contemporary figure who’s proven quite as influential on the genre. Even nowadays, King's impact can be felt in Stranger Things and the work of filmmakers like Robert Eggers.
But despite being such an iconic figure, don’t think that King doesn't have a sense of humor about himself. Again, putting aside his public disagreements with Stanley Kubrick, King has regularly welcomed the countless adaptations of his books and short stories, often agreeing to cameo in them. Whether it’s for...

We're just a short time away from the theatrical release of The Monkey, Osgood Perkins' follow-up to his 2024 hit Longlegs, and if that news isn't good enough for you, maybe its Rotten Tomatoes Score will be. Embargoes have lifted, the reviews are in, and at the time of this writing, the newest Stephen King adaptation sits at a healthy 86% on the website, which bodes well for its box office take this coming weekend.
Based on King's short story that was first published in 1980 and then collected into 1985's Skeleton Crew, The Monkey stars Theo James as twin brothers Hal and Bill Shelburn who, at a young age, stumble upon their father's vintage toy monkey in the attic, and witness a string of horrifying deaths all around them. Years later, the toy resurfaces, causing the siblings to reconcile and embark on a mission to permanently eliminate the cursed toy. "Osgood Perkins'...

Kyle Richards isn’t in a hurry to file the divorce papers. There’s a good reason. The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star is still navigating her separation from her estranged husband, Mauricio Umansky.
Complicated Divorce

It’s been 18 months since they announced their separation. An insider told The U.S. Sun that Richards and Umansky aren’t divorced yet because the exes aren’t rushing to file the papers. They know there’s going to be more paperwork involved. The duo has a lot of finances involved, especially with the real estate business.

The past couple of weeks have seen many casting announcements for Scream 7. At first, they seemed fairly normal, with people like Isabel May and McKenna Grace fulfilling the teen roles. Makes sense, as they always need a new cast of young victims, as Neve Campbell’s Sydney Prescott can only do so much. Then part of the Core Four was announced, with Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy-Brown returning as the Meeks’. Very cool considering the Barrera/Ortega films appeared to be getting excised. But that’s when things started to get weird. Despite rumors of his involvement for months, Patrick Dempsey was not cast as Sydney’s husband, instead Joel McHale ended up taking the role. Unexpected but scheduling conflicts happen and they clearly have a movie to make. But that’s when we got some true head-scratchers. Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard were both announced as having roles in the film.

Every anime fan knows that a key aspect of any true shonen protagonist is their transformation. Transformations act as a breakthrough, allowing these characters to tap into their true nature, unleashing a level of power that leaves a lasting impression. Practically every shonen series features a main character who relies on at least one form when the going gets rough — whether it's Yusuke Urameshi, Naruto Uzumaki, or Son Goku, the Godfather of Shonen. Naturally, Monkey D. Luffy from One Piece is no exception, pulling out a range of forms from his rolodex of tricks whenever necessary.
Luffy is hands-down one of the most creatively adaptable fighters around. This verdict isn't just because of his Devil Fruit power, which allows him to stretch beyond the competition, but also because he's an intelligent combatant who can think on the fly to come up with innovative maneuvers. His goofy style of creativity has...

The end of the world as we know it gets closer and closer with each passing day, but how do you plan to spend the apocalypse? For the protagonist of Meera Menon’s Didn’t Die, the apocalypse has been a bummer, but mostly because her podcast audience is shrinking away as they get eaten by the living dead. With a couple clever twists and a strong sense of good-humored doom ‘n’ gloom, Didn’t Die presents a very tangible vision of what the immediate aftermath of a zombie outbreak might look like.

The Virgin of The Quarry Lake, adapted from the short stories of Mariana Enríquez (Things We Lost in The Fire), recently celebrated its World Premiere at the 2025 Sundance Film Festival. It’s a simmering, atmospheric story that has horror in its heart but mostly plays like a brooding summer hangout with a group of girls on the verge of adulthood where the vibe is all wrong. It’s an Elevated Horror that spends the majority of its time in a coming-of-age story but packs a creeping cold open and a ripping finish.
Directed by Laura Casabé (The Returned) from a screenplay by Benjamin Naishtat (Rojo), this early 2000’s-timepiece follows a young girl caught in a love triangle with a boy and an older “more experienced” woman. The debut feature film of Caitlin Cronenberg, daughter of legendary body horror auteur David Cronenberg, is quickly rising on Hulu's charts. Sitting at number three as of this writing, Humane was released in April 2024 but didn't receive much attention at the time. The psychological thriller hit Shudder in July of that year, but still didn't make much of a blip. It seems the underrated film is finally getting its due on Hulu.
Humane takes place in an alternate reality Canada, where the climate crisis has prompted the world's governments to institute a euthanasia campaign in order to rid Earth of 20% of its human population. The narrative centers on the Yorks, an estranged family brought together one evening by patriarch Charles. He has a surprise for his children, one that will lead the night into a terrifying nightmare full of twists and turns.

Written and directed by Drew Hancock, Companion is a rock-em sock-em Rom Com with a bigger body count than Wolf Man and more laugh-out-loud moments than an entire season of The Bear. The genre mash-up stars Jack Quaid (The Boys) and Sophie Thatcher (Heretic) as Josh & Iris, a young couple looking to spend a quite weekend with friends in a remote getaway. Unfortunately, their little relaxing vacay goes awry after the sudden death of their host and the group quickly scrambles into survival mode as they figure out what to do next. If you’ve already seen the full theatrical trailer, you know a little bit more than I’m letting on, but if you haven’t seen that trailer yet- Good.
We’re only one month into 2025 and we already have our first Impossible To Review Genre Film of The Year! It’s not that Companion has some sort of Shyamalanian twist halfway through,...

So, you survived The Substance. Congrats! But if your brain’s still buzzing with its trippy visuals and squirm-worthy themes of transformation, you’re probably itching for more horror that messes with your head—and maybe your stomach. Body horror is all about taking the human form and saying, “What if we… didn’t?” And when you add female leads, vibrant aesthetics, and stories packed with emotional (and sometimes literal) guts, the result is an unforgettable lineup of films that are as smart as they are …squishy.
But let’s get one thing straight—not every movie on this list is straight-up body horror. Some lean more into psychological horror, others tackle themes of identity and empowerment, and a few just want to paint the walls red. What they all have in common? Bold female protagonists, jaw-dropping visuals, and transformations that’ll leave you squirming in the best way possible.

When you think of werewolves, your mind probably goes straight to foggy forests and full moons—but let’s not forget the other perfect backdrop for a beastly horror story: snow. Wintery werewolf movies are quite the niche but still an oh-so-satisfying subgenre. One where the frigid chill of the season cranks up the tension, and the isolation of a snowy landscape creates the perfect hunting ground for our furry friends.
Werewolves in the snow are pure nightmare fuel. There’s something about the mix of primal creatures and icy environments that feels so right. Maybe it’s the visual of blood staining freshly fallen snow, or the way a howling wind seems to mimic the call of a wolf. Whatever it is, winter werewolf movies hit a little differently, offering both atmospheric dread and some ferocious fun.

It’s always a shock how quickly things can go from completely normal to totally f*cked up. In Michiel Blanchart’s Night Call (La Nuit se Traîne), a college student moonlighting as a locksmith gets pulled into an organized crime conspiracy after he opens a door into the Belgian underworld. What should have been a routine night of studying in between service calls suddenly becomes a fight for survival after he’s tricked into helping a stranger rob some very, very dangerous people. It’s a tight thriller with dynamite performances top-to-bottom, and some really clever camerawork that punches up a “one bad night” tale into a crisp, action-packed adventure through the seedy underbelly of downtown Brussels.
Set against the backdrop of a Black Lives Matter protest, which Michiel Blanchart weaves into his story in a really interesting way, our hero is left with no one to turn to...

Even though The Nightmare Before Christmas is a classic holiday movie and over 30 years old, there's still a misconception that it was Tim Burton who directed it. The Nightmare Before Christmas was released in 1993 and introduced the world to the Pumpkin King Jack Skellington, who has grown bored with his role ruling over Halloween and seeks to take over the running of Christmas, to predictably drastic results. Nightmare Before Christmas' blossoming romance between Jack and Sally, the rag doll, is also threaded throughout the story.
Despite its trim 76 minutes, The Nightmare Before Christmas packs tons of heart, humor, and charisma into the story. Plenty of grown adults struggling with career burnout can find much to relate to in The Nightmare Before Christmas' deeper meaning and themes of Jack's midlife crisis. Despite its relative brevity and being aimed at children, it's a shockingly complete movie that holds up well. It's why...

Tim Burton, Danny Elfman, and Henry Selick's most notable and recognizable film is The Nightmare Before Christmas. Fans often speculate that the movie is so unique that the story, now considered a classic, would be a tough sell to producers today. It's such a gem in terms of music, setting, design, and characters, that fans often keep an eye out for a potential sequel.
Though Tim Burton enjoys making and producing movie remakes, like his film remake of the series Dark Shadows and his film retelling of the short story Sleep Hollow, there is no current indication that The Nightmare Before Christmas is due for a remake or a sequel. Nevertheless, fans revisit the movie often around Halloween and the Christmas seasons. If the Nightmare creatives were to ever get together again and create a sequel, there is one character, in particular, that would be the perfect vehicle for another story in Halloween Town.

2024 was a momentous year for Thor, with a series of major events leading to him leaving the Avengers. Thor made this decision due to a serious issue with his powers which led to him being suspected of murder with no way to clear his name. However, he didn't leave Earth's Mightiest Heroes without divine muscle - before taking his leave, Thor asked a different god to officially join the team. The move is part of a far larger evolution in Thor's powers that has seen him ascend to true 'All-Father' status, like Odin before him.
The momentous change came in Avengers #17, with Sam Wilson's Captain America asking Storm to join their ranks. The mutant hero was undecided on the offer until she spoke to Thor, who revealed he planned to leave, and asked her to ensure that "a God of Thunder rides with the Avengers still."

It’s been almost two years since Chainsaw Man first premiered as the series took the anime scene by storm and continues to impact the genre. The slasher anime is nothing short of legendary in most aspects.
With Mappa’s creative brilliance, the series spotlights Tatsuki Fujimoto’s excellence as a mangaka. The blood, violence, and gore coupled with fantasy is what makes it stand out. However, fans are not happy with the studio’s latest development.

Tim Burton and Henry Selcik's 1993 stop-motion animated classic is a perennial favorite for end-of-year festive viewing, but an intense debate rages: Is The Nightmare Before Christmas a Halloween movie or a Christmas movie? The beloved film centers around Jack Skellington, the wistful Pumpkin King of Halloween Town who stumbles upon Christmas Town and becomes determined to make the holiday his own. Also a musical, The Nightmare Before Christmas has a bevy of catchy songs that diehard fans know by heart.
One of the most popular of these songs is "This Is Halloween", which isn't just a catchy tune but a rallying cry for Nightmare Before Christmas fans who decree the film a definitively spooky season movie. However, the definition of what can be considered a Christmas film grows increasingly broader with every year, with the once popular "Is Die Hard a Christmas movie?" debate now considered passe, with many accepting...

Bloodywood are taking the music world by storm, bringing their “Nu Dehli” sound to the masses. Combining the forces of more traditional Indian music with the raw power of metal, plus a smattering of anime influences, the band have a sound unlike any other. I was able to chat with the band to learn more about their gateway anime, the anime influences of the video, and working with the legendary Japanese metal idols. Can you tell me a little about your anime journey? How it started and where you are now? Are there genres you gravitate toward? What is your favorite anime series or movie of all time? Like the grand majority of film critics out there, Roger Ebert, the famous Chicago Sun-Times referent for all things regarding movies, and probably the most important film critic in history, didn’t exactly love horror movies. It didn’t matter if it was on the TV show Siskel & Ebert, with fellow critic Gene Siskel, or reviewing in print material, Ebert famously looked down on most horror movies. Only a handful of scary films made his Great Movies list (according to his website there are only 16), and a four-star rating was not common. But this doesn’t mean he wasn’t impressed by them occasionally, a good example being Wes Craven’s New Nightmare.
Made in 1994, but from an idea director Wes Craven had in 1987, New Nightmare is a different kind of horror film. There’s nothing quite like it in the universe of scary films, and this is probably...

It's hard to overstate just how significant Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street still is. The slasher classic has successfully infiltrated our popular subconscious, reaching a sinister gloved hand into the imaginations of generations of filmmakers and reshaping modern horror cinema. It's perhaps only with hindsight that the full extent of the 1984 movie's impact can be appreciated. But even with its iconic villain, inspired premise, and archetypal story, the original A Nightmare on Elm Street is much more than an artifact to be admired. It remains a thrilling spectacle albeit with some of its originality tarnished.

(Welcome to Tales from the Box Office, our column that examines box office miracles, disasters, and everything in between, as well as what we can learn from them.)
"Every studio rejected it." These are the words of the late horror master Wes Craven, speaking in a 2014 oral history with Vulture regarding his 1984 cinematic classic "A Nightmare on Elm Street." It's difficult to imagine the horror genre -- if not broader pop culture -- without Freddy Krueger in it, but it was, indeed, a Herculean task getting this now-classic horror movie made. "I have the rejection letter from Universal framed on my office wall," Craven added.
What's perhaps most amazing of all is that this wasn't even Craven's first film. The man that would eventually go on to save the slasher in the '90s with "Scream" already had "Last House on the Left" and "The Hills Have Eyes" on his resume,...

Fans of Type O Negative should sink their teeth into the new Neon Nightmare album, which channels Peter Steele’s gothic doom sound with a modern twist.
From the press release: “Born out of the elemental primordium contained in heavy metal’s working class roots, from the war-scarred industrial landscapes of Birmingham to the beat up bars and basements of Brooklyn, Neon Nightmare arrive like a ghost in the night to carry on the tradition.
“A blink-and-you’ll-miss-it but unmistakable deadpan satirical strain runs through the debut LP, Faded Dream. For all its genuine foreboding and confrontation with real depression, the album never loses itself in the mire or gives up on its predilection for thrill-seeking amusements and sanguine fascination. The sounds conjured have lived in many momentous forms throughout the decades of heavy metal history, and Neon Nightmare are here to continue the cycle.”

From the minds of Scott Beck and Bryan Woods, Heretic starts strong, cooking up a tension-filled thriller with a faith-based twist, but halfway through, the recipe seems to fall apart. The setup is solid, with a well-calibrated blend of tension and Hugh Grant’s unsettlingly disarming charm. But for all its ambition, the film bites off more than it’s willing to chew, delivering theological debates without the promised payoff. Heretic sets the stage for a wickedly clever horror thriller but loses its nerve right as things get interesting.
