Everyone is Welcome in the Land of Oz

The Children's Theatre Company of Minneapolis adapted L. Frank Baum's novel to a musical theatre production in the early eighties. If I was a child growing up in the twin cities, I would have loved to attend this theatre aimed at younger audiences. The filmed production does not age well though. Julee Cruise is great and unrecognizable as General Jinjur though. Wendy Lehr is perfect as the witch. The child actor who played Tip did a terrific job. This production was filmed in front of a live audience. The production does a fine job in moving the story along. It's entertaining but it's dated to by today's standards.

Marvelous Land of Oz is Magical!

I saw this live stage production on HBO when I was quite young and was thrilled to finally get my hands on a VHS copy a few years ago. If you are an Oz fanatic like I am, this is a MUST SEE! If you are also a musical theater fanatic, this is a MUST SEE! I only wish I knew who controlled the performance rights to this wonderful work. The children's theater company who produced this stage version, captures the magic of the Land of Oz perfectly in costumes, make-up, and settings. The script and music are both well-written and the feature is very enjoyable for both children and adults alike! If you can get your hands on a copy of this, you will not be disappointed!

    • Trivia
In the novel, Ozma's father King Pastoria is said to be dead. In this play, the Scarecrow asks "Isn't Pastoria dead and gone?" to which Glinda replies "That is the popular belief." This may be an allusion to the Oz works of Ruth Plumly Thompson, the author licensed to continue the series after L. Frank Baum's death. In The Lost King of Oz (1925), a rescue party searches for Pastoria, who is living with amnesia in a remote region of Oz, surrounded by decoys and red herrings.
    • Goofs
A plot point is that the mysterious flowers have the faces of Jinjur and her army, but there is not the slightest resemblance. Presumably the props were cut before casting, and there was no way to alter them later.
    • Connections
      Referenced in Willy/Milly (1986)
