The shipwreck sequence was originally supposed to take place during a storm. The storm was changed to a fog bank because of the constraints of the low budget.

Director Paul Lynch was inspired to make this film after he heard a kid use the word "humongous."

Garry Robbins, who plays the disfigured killer, was driven to the set in full monster make-up.

A few seconds of sex and gore were cut from the Opening scene in the U.S theatrical release to avoid an X-rating. The uncut version is available on home media.
