In the Lost Lands.Paul W. S. Anderson is beaming a boyish grin when I log into our video call. Salt-and-pepper hair aside, you wouldn’t guess that the B-movie maven was turning sixty on the day of our chat. “I’m actually getting to spend my first birthday in three years with Milla,” he says by way of preamble while I fumble with my recording device. Anderson is cinema’s preeminent wife guy, and the Milla in question is Milla Jovovich, mother to his three daughters and star of seven collaborations.Theirs is one of the great actor-director partnerships of the 21st century—she the high-kicking badass with charisma to burn, he the no-nonsense conductor of bodies in (slow) motion; the enthusiastic facilitator of his leading lady’s uncomplicated cool. The surly critical dismissal of their new film, In the Lost Lands (2025), tells a familiar story. Content to miss the wood for the trees,...

Milla Jovovich has hinted that she might reprie her role as Leeloo in an animated spinoff of The Fifth Element. While promoting her upcoming film In the Lost Lands, she mentioned working with filmmaker Luc Besson again and suggested he may already be developing “some sort of spinoff of a bunch of his characters.” This is the first mention of such a project, but it’s already generating excitement among fans.
Jovovich elaborated, saying, “I think Luc is making some sort of spinoff of a bunch of his biggest characters, and Leeloo might be one of them. An animated, cartoon version. I think back in those days, people weren’t thinking about sequels, it was just about making the best movie you could possibly make. For me, Leeloo was one of the most important characters of my young life at that point. It’s what really introduced me to what...

Big bada boom! It’s been roughly 27 years since I saw The Fifth Element nine times in theaters (the most I’d ever seen a single movie at the cinema), and not a year goes by that I don’t revisit Luc Besson’s sci-fi classic at least once. Not only would I put The Fifth Element on a list of my all-time favorite movies, but it would likely crack the Top 20, maybe even the Top 10. Whether you support my enthusiasm for the film or not, there’s no chance of ignoring a quote from Milla Jovovich, who plays Leeloo Dallas in the movie, saying an animated spin-off of The Fifth Element featuring her character could be on the way.
Speaking with Comicbook.com about her upcoming film with Dave Bautista, In the Lost Lands, Jovovich mentioned she’s working with The Fifth Element director and co-writer Luc Besson again, saying...

When I saw on Deadline that filming has wrapped on an action thriller called Turbulence, my first thought was, “Is it a remake?” This despite the fact that there have been multiple films with the title Turbulence over the years. I thought it might have something to do with the 1997 film with the title, which starred Lauren Holly as a flight attendant stuck on a plane with a serial killer played by Ray Liotta. As it turns out, the new Turbulence doesn’t have anything to do with that franchise… but it is a hot air balloon thriller that stars Olga Kurylenko (Quantum of Solace) and Kelsey Grammer (Frasier), so it might make for an interesting viewing experience.

Plot: A new adult-animated anthology series featuring original stories set within the worlds of some of the world’s most beloved video games. From the creative minds behind Love, Death + Robots, each of the 15 episodes is a celebration of games and gamers.
Review: Deadpool director Tim Miller is a major animation supporter and spent a decade trying to bring a new feature film anthology based on the cult classic film Heavy Metal, based on the long-running magazine of the same name, to the big screen. When that project failed to come together, Miller helped develop Love, Death + Robots at Netflix, a concept similar to Heavy Metal but with a focus on contemporary animation styles. The three-volume animated anthology was popular with genre fans and had some cross-over appeal with mainstream audiences. Miller aims to reach a different subculture with animated shorts collected in the new Prime Video series Secret Level.

Sailor Moon Cosmos is the long-awaited conclusion to the Sailor Moon Crystal reboot. The two-part film adapts the finale arc of the original manga by Naoko Takechi, Pretty Guardian Sailor Moon. Sailor Moon Crystal and Sailor Moon Cosmos differ from the original Sailor Moon anime from the 1990s, because it's a far more manga-accurate series that doesn't shy away from some of the manga's weightier themes.
The original anime changed and cut out some vital parts of the Sailor Moon series' conclusion. Fans eagerly awaited seeing scenes they only read in the manga brought onto the screen, and they weren't disappointed. Sailor Moon Cosmos brings Usagi Tsukino's saga full circle.

He who controls the franchises, controls the world! Denis Villeneuve had not even completed the first half of his two-part Dune adaptation before plans for a TV spin-off were announced in 2019 — it was already obvious that his particular spice world would be fertile ground for future intellectual-property harvesting. Frank Herbert’s sci-fi epic had been brought to the small screen before, but this new HBO series would build off of Villeneuve’s vision and borrow from the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune, written by Brian “Son of Frank” Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson.

Greg Hildebrandt, the admired artist and illustrator who created movie posters for the original Star Wars and Clash of the Titans, drew Marvel characters and designed iconic 1970s calendars that celebrated the Lord of the Rings trilogy, has died. He was 85.
Hildebrandt died in Denville, New Jersey, his son, Greg Jr., told The Hollywood Reporter. For the past five months, he had been dealing with a serious side effect from a heart medication.
The artist, who frequently partnered with his late twin brother, Tim Hildebrandt, also illustrated covers for DC Comics and trading cards for an epic 1994 Marvel Masterpieces set; painted artwork for Dungeons & Dragons calendars; and designed covers for the 1981 Black Sabbath album Mob Rules and many LPs from the Trans-Siberian Orchestra.
Without having access to film stills and publicity photos and given a very tight deadline by 20th Century Fox, the brothers painted the “Style B” poster for the U.

The director's cuts of Rebel Moon saw improved Rotten Tomatoes scores from both critics and audiences. Adding gore and nudity didn't magically fix the flaws in the film, as critics still found the narrative and character development lacking. While neither version of Rebel Moon is great, the director's cuts are closer to Zack Snyder's original vision.
Zack Snyder has been hyping up his R-rated directors cuts of the Rebel Moon movies since the two-parter was first announced, but are the new versions any better than the original cuts? When Snyder made a deal with Netflix to essentially turn Heavy Metal magazine into a live-action movie, they disagreed on the rating. Netflix wanted a PG-13 sci-fi actioner they could market to younger viewers, but Snyder wanted to make an R-rated movie for immature grown-ups. They compromised by making both, first releasing PG-13 versions and later supplementing them with R-rated directors cuts.

[This story contains spoilers for Rebel Moon.]
After nearly three decades of development, Zack Snyder’s unadulterated vision for his Rebel Moon space opera is finally at your fingertips.
Snyder had to take an awfully circuitous path to today’s two-part director’s cut release of Rebel Moon on Netflix. Inspired by Seven Samurai, Star Wars, Heavy Metal magazine and a bevy of other properties, the project that was originally known as The Five began to formulate in 1997 alongside co-writer Kurt Johnstad. Eventually, in 2012, Snyder retrofitted his idea for Star Wars and pitched it to Lucasfilm shortly after Disney acquired the beloved IP from franchise mastermind George Lucas. When that didn’t take, he then tried to sell it as a video game and movie to his DC collaborators at the time, Warners Bros. There was even a period of time where he considered making a TV series with Narcos producer Eric Newman.

Earlier this week, with his director's cut of Rebel Moon having just arrived, The Hollywood Handle sat down with director Zack Snyder to discuss his career, what's coming next, and even talk a bit about his personal favorites, including the best scene he's ever done and the best film of 2024 so far.
But how does he get creative and not experience creative burnout with such a deluge of projects? To this end, Snyder says his passion for filmmaking keeps him juiced about creating. "Not working is more difficult. I think I get energized by the work," he said, insisting that this cadence of production is intense but not tiring.

With CSI: Vegas two episodes away from its series finale, the CBS show finally delivers the hard-hitting reveal that audiences have been waiting for ever since Season 3's Big Bad was introduced. "Heavy Metal" is a spotlight episode for Sarah Gilman's character Penny Gill, who's working toward becoming a CSI Level II. It brings back Penny's surprise engagement to assistant medical examiner Jack Nikolayevich, and also gives a little bit more screen time to Jay Lee as Chris Park, since he's supposed to be Penny's partner. Rebel Moon - Part Two: The Scargiver has lost the top spot on Netflix to romcom Anyone But You. The Scargiver is criticized for being derivative, while Anyone But You delivers on the romcom formula. Weak reception for The Scargiver may signal the end of Zack Snyder's planned six-part Rebel Moon trilogy.
Zack Snyder’s latest opus, Rebel Moon – Part Two: The Scargiver, only came out on Friday, but it’s already lost the top spot in the Netflix streaming charts to a romantic comedy that hit theaters months ago. The Scargiver is the second movie set in Snyder’s Rebel Moon universe, which mashes together elements from more successful franchises like Dune, Warhammer, and Heavy Metal magazine. It began as a Star Wars pitch before being retooled into something that’s technically original, but is totally derivative of better sci-fi stories.

Rebel Moon is a space opera on Netflix that has received mixed reviews from critics but still has a decent viewership. Despite being a big end-of-year release for Netflix, Rebel Moon has not achieved the level of success that was anticipated, especially compared to another popular Netflix movie. Leave the World Behind, which deals with the threat of technology, has surpassed Rebel Moon in popularity, likely due to better critical reception and a timely theme.
Zack Snyder’s space opera Rebel Moon has been a big success for Netflix, but its position on the streaming charts just highlights how much more successful an earlier Netflix movie was. Retooled from a failed Star Wars pitch, Rebel Moon is a soft remake of Akira Kurosawa’s samurai classic Seven Samurai set in a galaxy far, far away with elements borrowed from Dune, Warhammer, and Heavy Metal magazine. While the movie has been panned by critics,...

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon draws heavily from existing franchises like Star Wars and Warhammer 40,000, lacking originality. A fan theory suggests that Rebel Moon is actually set in the Warhammer 40,000 universe, as it shares numerous concepts and names. Henry Cavill, who dropped out of The Witcher, will lead the Warhammer 40,000 movie and TV franchise, which may benefit from Rebel Moon's negative reviews.

The film has been dubbed an original I.P., and the filmmakers have been talking up its originality in their promotional press appearances,...

Richard Romanus, the tough-guy character actor best known for his turn as Michael Longo, the Little Italy loan shark who gets into it with Robert De Niro’s Johnny Civello in Martin Scorsese’s Mean Streets, has died. He was 80.
Romanus died Dec. 23 in a private hospital in Volos, Greece, his son, Robert Romanus, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Romanus handled prominent voice roles for Ralph Bakshi in 1977’s Wizards (as the elf warrior Weehawk) and 1982’s Hey Good Lookin’ (as the leader of a 1950s greaser gang), and in between, he played the cab driver Harry Canyon in another animated film, Heavy Metal (1981).
He also appeared on four episodes of The Sopranos as Richard Lapenna, the on-again, off-again husband of Lorraine Bracco’s Jennifer Melfi, from 1999-2002.
In Mean Streets (1973), Romanus’ character is famously disrespected by Johnny when he leans on him for his money.

Star Wars: A New Hope is a clear influence on Rebel Moon, with similarities in setting and narrative structure. Heavy Metal offers a darker tone and outlandish imagery that echoes Rebel Moon's style. The Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy has an ensemble cast of misfits, making it a worthy stand-in for Rebel Moon while waiting for the sequel.
Rebel Moon: Part One - A Child of Fire's release on Netflix may have stirred up a hunger of quality space-operas, bringing some old movies back into the limelight due to their similarity. Having been a passion project for Zack Snyder for years, Rebel Moon has finally come to fruition, releasing the first part of its epic, galaxy-spanning science fiction saga for streaming on Netflix. While the slated release date for Rebel Moon: Part Two - The Scargiver bubbles on the horizon, eager fans can subsist on some strikingly similar sci-fi fare...

Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon draws inspiration from Heavy Metal magazine and animated movies, showcasing its style and aesthetics. Rebel Moon - Part 1: A Child of Fire tells the story of a farming community recruiting warriors to defend against the Imperium, influenced by Seven Samurai and various other properties. Despite comparisons to Star Wars, Rebel Moon's biggest inspiration is Heavy Metal, with Snyder's previous film Sucker Punch also influenced by the magazine.
Zack Snyder's newest Netflix movie, Rebel Moon - Part 1: A Child of Fire is drawing a lot of comparisons to Star Wars and Warhammer 40k, but it actually shares a lot more of its DNA with a somewhat obscure 1980s illustrated fantasy magazine and animated movie Heavy Metal.

This Rebel Moon article contains spoilers.
After rolling credits on Rebel Moon Part 1: A Child of Fire, you won’t be surprised to learn the Netflix movie began life as a pitch for a new Star Wars film. Director Zack Snyder brought his idea for a “more mature” Star Wars movie to Lucasfilm just before Disney’s takeover of the studio. While that version of what would become Rebel Moon never got off the ground, it freed Snyder to create his homage to George Lucas and Akira Kurosawa’s Seven Samurai completely in his own way, without having to stick to the established rules of the galaxy far, far away. The result is a movie that plays with all of Lucas’ toys but in a much darker universe full of “violence, sex, and swearing.”
Yet, while Snyder goes his own way with some of the material, there’s no...

The Academy’s Visual Effects long list of 20 finalists were notified Thursday and the results shook up the Oscar race: Christopher Nolan’s “Oppenheimer” — considered by many to be the frontrunner — did not make the cut despite a dazzling display of practical, in-camera effects and digital compositing for the Trinity explosion, and particle simulations for the subatomic world shot in cloud tanks.
IndieWire reached out to Universal, Academy VFX branch members, and visual effect studio Dneg for comment, but no explanation was offered for the exclusion of “Oppenheimer.” However, sources speculated that the determining factor was the entire film included only 150 invisible VFX shots. Two other potential contributors: Nolan’s early comments about there being no CGI in “Oppenheimer,” and the pushback when very few Dneg artists were listed in the end credits.
Speaking of CGI, Sony’s “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse” was the surprise entry, given how hard it...

Zack Snyder may have his hands full launching Rebel Moon, his sci-fi fantasy film that Netflix unveils Dec. 22, but that doesn’t mean the energetic filmmaker isn’t busy developing other projects.
Enter Blood and Ashes. The film began life as a sequel to 300 and 300: Rise of an Empire, and was one of the last projects Snyder worked on before officially leaving Warner Bros. after the debacle that was Justice League. But what he turned in was quite different from a 300 sequel.
Blood and Ashes, which he partially wrote while shooting Army of the Dead for Netflix in 2019, ended up focusing on the relationship between Alexander the Great and his second in command, Haphaestion. It was a gay love story that was also an ancient Greek war epic, one he said then-Warners executive Courtenay Valenti liked and championed.
The studio, perhaps unsurprisingly, given its subject matter and the...
