‘Papaya: Love Goddess of the Cannibals’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Sirpa Lane, Melissa Chimenti, Maurice Poli, Nat Bush, Dakar, Maria Grazia Smaldone | Written by Roberto Gandus, Renzo Maietto | Directed by Joe D’Amato

Joe D’Amato’s Papaya: Love Goddess of the Cannibals is a fascinating, if uneven, entry in both the director’s filmography and the broader canon of 1970s Italian exploitation cinema. Released in 1978, the film is emblematic of D’Amato’s fascination with the intersection of eroticism, violence, and the exotic—elements that dominated much of his work during this period. It serves as a prime example of the blend of exploitation genres that thrived in Italy’s B-movie industry, particularly the fusion of horror, sexploitation, and tropical adventure.

The film follows Sara, a journalist investigating a mysterious island where a foreign corporation plans to construct a nuclear power plant, disrupting the indigenous population. The central character of Papaya, a native femme fatale, seduces and kills white outsiders,...

‘Absurd’ 4K Uhd Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: George Eastman, Annie Belle, Charles Borromel, Katya Berger, Kasimir Berger, Hanja Kochansky, Ian Danby, Ted Rusoff, Edmund Purdom | Written by George Eastman | Directed by Joe D’Amato

Absurd (1981), also known as Horrible and Rosso Sangue, is an Italian horror film directed by Joe D’Amato. The film serves as a loose follow-up to D’Amato’s earlier work, Anthropophagus. It features George Eastman reprising a similar role, this time as a near-immortal killer who regenerates from his injuries, leaving a trail of brutal murders in his wake, building on the themes and shock value established in Anthropophagus, pushing the boundaries of gore and violence even further. Absurd opens with the brutal pursuit and impalement of Eastman’s character, setting the tone for a relentless parade of bloodshed. The plot revolves around this indestructible killer terrorizing a suburban family, turning their home into a battleground of survival.

Much like its predecessor,...

Severin’s Summer Sale – Full Lineup of New Releases Includes Dario Argento’s ‘Opera’ & More
Image
Underway now through July 16, Severin Films‘ annual summer sale is the most ambitious in the company’s history. The Dario Argento’s Opera five-disc box set — which you can preview in an exclusive clip below — is the headliner, but there are nine more releases in addition to exclusive merchandise and big savings on past inventory.

Here’s everything you need to know about this year’s Severin Summer Sale…

Opera

In my eyes — held open with needles, of course — Opera is Argento’s last true masterpiece. While the Italian maestro attained fleeting moments of greatness later in his oeuvre, Opera is the last of his efforts that can hold its own alongside his earlier, career-defining work like Suspiria, Deep Red, Tenebrae, and The Bird with the Crystal Plumage.

Co-written by Argento and frequent collaborator Franco Ferrini, the giallo stars Cristina Marsillach as Betty, a young opera singer whose big break...

‘Anthropophagus’ 4K Uhd Review (88 Films)
Image
Stars: Tisa Farrow, Saverio Vallone, George Eastman, Serena Grandi, Margaret Mazzantini, Mark Bodin, Bob Larson, Rubina Rey | Written by Joe D’Amato, George Eastman | Directed by Joe D’Amato

Anthropophagus, also known as The Grim Reaper, is a notorious Italian horror film directed by Joe D’Amato. The plot centres on a group of tourists who become stranded on a deserted island, only to discover that they are being hunted by a deranged, cannibalistic killer, played with ferocious intensity by George Eastman.

Anthropophagus is a film that has cemented its place in horror history not only for its content but also for the controversy it sparked. As a piece of cinema, it embodies the visceral, unflinching approach to horror that Italian filmmakers of the time were known for. The film’s atmosphere is one of relentless dread, enhanced by its hauntingly desolate island setting and a sparse, eerie score that lingers...

Her death was announced on social media by Mia Farrow, who said that Tisa apparently died in her sleep.

Joe Bob Briggs – Wtf Happened to This Horror Celebrity?
Image
The Joe Bob Briggs episode of the Wtf Happened to This Horror Celebrity? video series (formerly known as Where in the Horror Are They Now) was Written and Narrated by Jessica Dwyer and Edited by Victoria Verduzco. It was Produced by John Fallon and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

There’s a gold standard that horror hosts are held to. The icons become as popular as the movies that they show. Zacherley, Elvira, and Vampira are some of the names that come to mind, all of them inherently macabre in their own way. Most horror hosts have something ooky and spooky about them. And then there’s the one and only Joe Bob Briggs. Joe Bob is his own sort of creature, a Drive In Cowboy who loves blood, breasts, and beasts… and going on long, amazing rants about all the things he has a problem with in the world.

In a recent interview, Bill & Ted Face the Music writers Ed Solomon and Chris Matheson have revealed that there will in fact be numerous tributes to Carlin in the new movie. The first of these references is a new character who will be named Kelly,...

Graphic Nature: Artist Wes Benscoter on Creating the Absurd Vinyl Score Artwork for Death Waltz & PentaMusic
One of 39 titles to be successfully prosecuted under the Obscene Publications Acts in 1984, Joe D’Amato’s Absurd (aka Horrible aka Rosso Sangue) massaged the erogenous zones of gore hounds across the globe upon release. Centered around a tense, unforgettable melody, Carlo Maria Cordio’s score is a compelling mix of high-strung grindhouse funk and synthesized splinters of Italian flair. As part of Death Waltz’s video nasty series, the label commissioned the canvas work of Wes Benscoter, whose grizzly graphical style violently epitomized the film's dark, bloodthirsty aesthetic.

Creating cadaverous cover arts for many of heavy metal's legendary acts (his portfolio includes Slayer’s Divine Intervention and Black Sabbath’s The Dio Years), it was only a matter of time before Death Waltz became a regular client of Benscoter. “After [the cover art for] New Barbarians was finished, I mentioned to Spencer [Hickman, head of Death Waltz] that if they ever do Antropophagus that I’d love to do the cover art,...

‘Death Wish’ Trailer
(Aton) The trailer for the ‘Death Wish‘ remake has finally landed. The Eli Roth-directed vehicle stars Bruce Willis as Dr. Paul Kersey, a Chicago surgeon who goes out for revenge when his wife, (Elizabeth Shue) and daughter (Camila Morrone) are attacked in a vicious home invasion.

The original ‘Death Wish‘, which stared Charles Bronson and spawned four sequels, is considered to be a classic among revenge flicks, if not cult status at the least. The remake was written by Joe Carnahan, and will mark Roth’s first venture into the action/revenge genre. Carnahan was originally set to direct, but after creative differences Roth stepped in to helm the picture.

The film also stars Vincent D’Onofrio, Jack Kesy, Dean Norris, and Mike Epps. Here’s the first full trailer.

Here’s the official synopsis for the remake:

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures presents director Eli Roth’s reimagining of the classic 1974 revenge thriller Death Wish.

Blu-ray Review: Beyond The Darkness (1979)
Joe D’Amato was a filmmaker that I only knew (other than his reputation for skin flicks and sleaze) from the one movie of his I had seen, Anthropophagous (1980), aka The Grim Reaper, aka "The One Where The Guy Eats The Baby Fetus." And going by that, I had a lot of trepidation upon opening Severin Films’ brand new Blu of Beyond the Darkness (1979), D’Amato’s exploration of necrophilia, icky maternal obsession, and stuffing the ones we love. I needn’t have worried. Beyond the Darkness, aka Buried Alive, aka Buio Omega, is not only vastly superior to Anthropophagous, it gives me hope that the D’Amato catalogue is filled with further gems to uncover. I mean, they’re not All porn, right? Right?

Take pity on poor Frank (Kieran Canter – The Devil in Mr. Holmes). The wealthy, single, orphaned taxidermist’s fiancé Anna (Cinzia Monreale – The Beyond) lies dying in the hospital,...

Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures have released the first trailer for director Eli Roth’s reimagining of the classic 1974 revenge thriller Death Wish.

Bruce Willis is Out For Brutal Revenge in The First Trailer For Death Wish
"They came for his family. Now he's coming for them."

Bruce Willis shoots people first and asks questions later in this first trailer for the remake of Death Wish. He goes on a killing spree of revenge after his wife is murdered. The movie was directed by Eli Roth, and this is a different kind of film for him. Roth is mostly known for the horror films that he's made. Death Wish is more of an action-thriller, an action-thriller that involves lots of killing. So, it seems like something Roth would enjoy making.

I'm not the biggest fan of Roth, but I enjoy watching Bruce Willis movies and the screenplay was written ben Joe Carnahan (Smokin' Aces, The A-Team, The Grey). Those are the two main reasons that I'll end up watching this movie. Judging by the trailer, the movie looks like it could be fun an entertaining, but it...

Bruce Willis Has a ‘Death Wish’ in First Trailer for Eli Roth’s Remake
After reveling in the horror genre for virtually all of his directorial career, Eli Roth is switching gears slightly with his next project as he heads into action-thriller territory with a remake of 1974’s Death Wish. Scripted by Joe Carnahan and starring Bruce Willis, the first trailer has now arrived ahead of a November release.

“We wanted to bring back that great, classic Bruce Willis we all know and love and just do a fun, badass update of a revered classic,” Roth told Yahoo! Movies. “I wanted to bring Bruce back to that Fifth Element, Unbreakable, Die Hard glory and have him craft another iconic performance, and I really think he did it. I mean I really think this can be his Taken. The fun is watching him go crazy and watching someone slowly move the moral goal post.”

Also starring Vincent D’Onofrio, Elisabeth Shue, Camila Morrone, Dean Norris,...

“The Prison: When Han Suk Kyu Meets Kim Rae Won”
Veteran actor Han Suk Kyu teamed up with charming TV actor Kim Rae Won for the first time as unlikely allies in the action thriller movie, “The Prison”. Directed by experienced screenwriter Na Hyun (“Spin Kick”, “Heartbreak Library”), the movie depicts Han as a merciless prison gang boss while Kim plays a troublemaker, quick-tempered ex-cop. The two characters meet in prison and start working together as Han took Kim under his wing.

There’s a first time for everything.

While Han Suk Kyu is no stranger when it comes to playing villains in the past, he is well-known for his mild image and deep, soothing voice. Same goes for Kim Rae Won whose claim to fame was rom-com television dramas such as “Attic Cat” and “Doctors”. The two actors both raised the acting bar by taking on evil, vicious, and ruthless characters this time. Of course, it was a piece...

Fear Twd Recap: Haven and Hell
Luke Perry and Malcolm-Jamal Warner in Jeremiah (2002)
After the Season 3 premiere of Fear the Walking Dead, you might have thought that there was no place a character could possibly feel more insecure than the Ottos’ compound (at least short of, say, Negan’s Sanctuary on The Walking Dead). But in Sunday’s episode, Strand proved us all wrong by being made a “guest” at an even less safe haven — and reuniting with a foe whose comeback showrunner Dave Erickson foretold more than a year ago. How dire was the predicament in which the sly devil found himself? Let’s put it this way: If at the Otto...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Zombie (1979)
“The boat can leave now. Tell the crew.” With these words, a horror classic was born. Zombie (1979) was the first Lucio Fulci film that assaulted my eyeballs, And it was the first zombie flick I ever saw. Heady stuff for a quivering ten-year-old, but it proved to be the perfect gateway to the splattery splendors of Italian terror, a door that will forever remain ajar.

Let me be as straightforward as I can: if you’re a fan of Fulci but haven’t caught this yet, you can forget about the surrealism of The Beyond (1981) or the Lovecraftian flourishes of City of the Living Dead (1980). This is Fulci driving a simple narrative right through the hearts of horror lovers everywhere, coming out the back bloodied and unbound, unapologetic in its mission statement to horrify and repulse. Mission accomplished.

Zombie was released in Italy in August of 1979 as Zombi 2, titled...

Movie Poster of the Week: The Posters of the 4th New York Film Festival
Above: Italian 2-foglio for Loves of a Blonde (Miloš Forman, Czechoslovakia, 1965).As the 54th New York Film Festival winds to a close this weekend I thought it would be instructive to look back at its counterpart of 50 years ago. Sadly, for the sake of symmetry, there are no filmmakers straddling both the 1966 and the 2016 editions, though Agnès Varda (88 years old), Jean-Luc Godard (85), Carlos Saura (84) and Jirí Menzel (78)—all of whom had films in the 1966 Nyff—are all still making films, and Milos Forman (84), Ivan Passer (83) and Peter Watkins (80) are all still with us. There are only two filmmakers in the current Nyff who could potentially have been in the 1966 edition and they are Ken Loach (80) and Paul Verhoeven (78). The current Nyff is remarkably youthful—half the filmmakers weren’t even born in 1966 and, with the exception of Loach and Verhoeven, the old guard is now represented by Jim Jarmusch, Pedro Almodóvar,...

[Warning: This story contains spoilers from the midseason premiere of Empire, "Death Will Have His Day."] The Grim Reaper is no stranger to Empire, but the loss at the center of Wednesday's midseason premiere was unlike any of the other sudden, shocking, over-the-top deaths that came before it. The Walking Dead's Merritt Wever Reacts to Eye-Popping Twist
Andrew Lincoln in The Walking Dead (2010)
The following story contains spoilers from Sunday’s The Walking Dead. Proceed at your own peril.

Holy comic-book detour.

The Grim Reaper took aim at Merritt Wever‘s Denise in this week’s Walking Dead, but the real twist was how the dear ol’ doc croaked. Unlike in Robert Kirkman’s comics, which saw the zombie-bitten character die at the merciful hands of Michonne, Denise was executed by Savior Dwight, who shot an arrow directly into her right eye socket.

Drive-In Dust Offs: Stage Fright
The late ‘80s signaled the end of my first golden age of horror. Which is to say two things: adulthood beckoned, and horror films – especially slashers - were running low on inspiration (remember the early ‘90s wasteland? Brr.). However, looking across the waters, some veteran Italian filmmakers weren’t throwing in the towel yet. Michele Soavi’s Stage Fright (1987) stands apart from the crowd because it proved that not only was the beaten and flogged sub-genre alive, it was still capable of surprising fans with enough fresh blood pumping through its weary veins to make you sit up and notice. Just when you thought you couldn’t survive another hack ‘em up, Stage Fright made you a believer again.

Stage Fright, Aka StageFright: Aquarius, Deliria, and Bloody Bird, whatever you’d like to call it – is a triumphant call back to a half decade earlier when slashers were full of kinetic energy,...

Stars: Michael Sopkiw, Valentina Forte, George Eastman, Stefano Mingardo, Ottaviano Dell’Acqua, Massimo Vanni, Elizabeth Forbes, Carl Savage, Michele Soavi, George Williams | Written by Luca De Rita, Massimo De Rita, Morando Morandini Jr., Dardano Sacchetti | Directed by Lamberto Bava

Number four in 88 Films Italian Collection, Blastfighter is one of those movies that, at least amongst cult movie fans, has gained legendary status, even for those that have never so much as seen the film! This is the type of action flick that fans of the genre hail as the pinnacle of insane, over the top, no-holds-barred Rambo/Deliverance knock-offs – for that is obviously where this film takes its inspiration. But this is backwoods-style vigilante justice with an Italian twist of course! Which is undoubtedly why the film has gained such a cult status.

Directed by Lamberto Bava, son of Giallo master Mario Bava and the man behind the 80s cult classic Demons,...
