Buffy the Vampire Slayer is an iconic series from the nineties created by Joss Whedon. The cult classic ran for seven seasons, following Buffy and her friends from high school through college into adulthood.
In the explosive season three finale of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Buffy and the rest of the graduating class fight an epic battle against the mayor of Sunnydale and his vampire army. Mayor Wilkins transforms into a giant snake demon, and the only way Buffy and the Scooby gang can defeat him is by blowing him—and the school—up. X-Men: The Animated Series had standout episodes like "Days of Future Past," showcasing thrilling action and gripping narratives. Some episodes, like "Captive Hearts," struggled to match the dynamism and quality of the majority, hindering the overall impact. Season finales like "Graduation Day" provided poignant conclusions, offering closure to character arcs and thematic narratives.
X-Men: The Animated Series featured many great episodes throughout its legendary run, though some episodes were notably less effective. The acclaimed Marvel cartoon boasted 76 episodes across five thrilling seasons. Among these, the very strongest X-Men: The Animated Series episodes helped cultivate an impressive reputation that led to a triumphant revival decades later with Marvels X-Men 97. Other episodes, on the other hand, were far less effective though sometimes merely by comparison.

Say what you will about Max, Paramount+, Hulu, and the like, but when it comes to horror films (and television series), there's one definitive streaming service: Shudder. And, for those who like to feverishly eat popcorn in anticipation of the next scare in June as much as they do in October, don't worry because another new month means another new selection of content for the spooky streamer.
Just as April had a mixture of (relatively) old favorites such as Drag Me to Hell and Shudder exclusives such as Late Night with the Devil, so too does June. And, don't forget, in May, Shudder added B-movie classics like The Toxic Avenger, Gorgo, The Giant Gila Monster, Graduation Day (1981), and Mother's Day (1980). In other words, June's additions make for some particularly red icing on what horror fans are sure to call a delicious cake.

For many kids growing up in the '90s, the animated X-Men series would have most likely been their first point of exposure to Marvel's mutants, and – along with the Batman: The Animated Series and later, Spider-Man: The Animated Series – their introduction to comic book superheroes in general. X-Men: The Animated Series ran for an impressive five seasons between 1992 and 1997 and quickly became one of the highest-rated kids' shows on TV. This is a legacy that remains strong to this day. Director Bryan Singer used it as his primary source of research when prepping for the first X-Men film because the series had been so successful in condensing down over 40 years' worth of key storylines from the comics. In 2015, Marvel started releasing an ongoing comic series based on the cartoon, X-Men '92, to honor the show's impact and has led to a revival with X-Men '97.

This article contains spoilers for "X-Men '97."
The sixth and latest episode of "X-Men '97" was titled "Lifedeath – Part 2." Sure enough, it continued the story of Storm and Forge (adapting a classic "X-Men" comic), culminating with Ororo regaining her mutant gifts as she pounds her fears (including claustrophobia and a demon owl) into submission. Gaining her Og Dave Cockrum-designed costume and white locks to show for it, Storm (once more Mistress of the Elements) called down a lightning strike seen from orbit and soared like Superman. But that wasn't all.
Like the previous "Lifedeath," this episode was bifurcated with an unrelated story — a story set a whole galaxy away. The X-Men have told the world that their founder and mentor Charles "Professor X" Xavier is dead, assassinated by anti-mutant extremist Henry Gyrich. That's why Magneto, Charles' heir, has taken his best frenemy's place as team leader (and rekindled his...

X-Men '97 supervising producer and head director Jake Castorena recently shared how the Disney+ show's unique 2D animation style was created.
Since the first trailer for X-Men '97 was released, Marvel fans have debated whether the show's animation style was CGI to look hand-drawn or a mix of both. Not to be one of those insufferable millennials who cries out "Only '90s kids remember," but hot dog do only '90s kids remember the glory of watching "X-Men: The Animated Series," aka the best animated Marvel superhero show of all time. The '90s was a bit of a wasteland of quality superhero offerings in live-action, but animated television was absolutely thriving. "X-Men: The Animated Series" helped turn a group of marvelous mutants into fast-favorites for a new generation, and set the groundwork for what many view as the definitive portrayals of many of the characters. And because everything old is new again, a continuation series, "X-Men '97," is coming our way to Disney+. The series is thankfully not a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, meaning it is picking up where the canon of the series finale left off in 1997 with "Graduation Day."

Superheroes never really die, and that's especially true of the X-Men. Across multiple comics, films, and cartoons, Marvel's merry band of mutants have been resurrected time and time again in various forms and protocols. Yet, for fans of a certain age, the only adaptation that really matters is X-Men: The Animated Series, a beloved cartoon that took on mammoth storylines such as the Dark Phoenix saga and Days Of Future Past with impressive comic book accuracy. In fact, an entire generation was raised on nothing more than those original five seasons and a bowl of cereal every Saturday morning from 1992 to 1997 (not counting reruns). But now, three decades on, the series that started it all — and that theme tune, of course — is rising like a phoenix of its own with a new sequel show from none other than Marvel Studios.

"X-Men '97" brings back the marvelous mutants as if they never left TV screens after the original series finale, "Graduation Day." The trailer promised a tone and style befitting the original, plus plenty of Marvel comic book Easter eggs.
Now, the X-Men are larger than life — and ultimately, any one actor. In the 27-year hiatus between the 1992 series and this revival, the X-Men finally made it to live-action (we ranked their cinematic adventures here) and starred in other animated series. Since "X-Men '97" is a revival of a specific version of the X-Men, though, the show has brought back cast members and creatives from the original show. If they hadn't, then why revive this series instead of just making a new "X-Men" cartoon?
In its opening titles, "X-Men" would introduce each member of the team one-by-one with hero shots demonstrating their powers and/or quirks alongside huge text displaying their names.

"X-Men '97" is bringing the marvelous mutant heroes back to the small screen like they never left it, picking up right after the original series finale, "Graduation Day." Since that aired, the show's '90s setting has gone from contemporary to period piece.
The long-awaited trailer for "X-Men '97" debuted on February 15, 2024, and there's plenty to discuss even with less than 2 minutes of footage. For one, we've now finally seen the series' animation style, which brings modern shading and three-dimensionality to the original's classic cartoon look.
Much of the original voice cast is back (even if they only get a line each to show it), while Ray Chase and Matthew Waterson sound uncanny as Cyclops and Magneto. I'll admit I've been skeptical of "X-Men '97" before now — I've never been a huge fan of the original (the production values were quite low and often off-putting). X-Men '97 will see Magneto taking over as the leader of the team since Professor X's departure in a devastating attack in the original series. The revival picks up where the original left off, exploring complex personal lives and storylines influenced by the classic X-Men comics. Fans shouldn't expect Professor X's return anytime soon, as the series will focus on the team dynamics and growth without him present.
The X-Men are coming back to the small screen in Marvel's revival of the classic animated series, X-Men '97, though they may be missing a key team member. There has been no sign of an appearance from the world's most powerful telepath, Professor Charles Xavier, in any of the images or plot details of X-Men '97 to have been released so far. Instead, the X-Men's old enemy Magneto is set to step up in Charles' place as the leader of the X-Men.

X-Men '97 has received an official rating certification.
As shared on X, Disney+ has updated its listing page for X-Men '97, revealing that the upcoming animated series has been rated TV-14. This is somewhat surprising given that its predecessor, X-Men: The Animated Series, was rated TV-Y7. However, considering that the target demographic for X-Men: Tas has aged considerably since it went off the air in 1997, it makes sense that Marvel Studios might want to cater to the show's now older fanbase. A TV-14 rating is also similar to the PG-13 rating that most of Marvel's superhero films have received from the Motion Picture Association.

Grab your boombox and meet me at the skatepark, because we're throwing it back to the '90s, folks! Despite all the warm and fuzzy feelings that that decade inspires in Millennials like me, it wasn't exactly a golden age for superhero media ... on the big screen, that is. Rory's continuous mistakes in the show, from skipping her own mother's graduation to cheating on her boyfriend, made her an unlikable character. Rory's decision to fat-shame a ballerina in her writing for Yale's newspaper showcased her in a negative light. Rory's poor decision-making skills and entitlement led her to dismiss a great job opportunity and ultimately sabotage her career.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" remains one of the great TV shows, at least in part because of its supporting characters. The series boasted a supporting cast that became as popular and beloved as the titular slayer herself. Whether it's the Scoobies, David Boreanez's Angel, or the hugely-popular character that was originally supposed to be killed off early, Spike (James Marsters), one of the series' great strengths was the fact that its central character was, at least by the series' end, essentially one of many protagonists.
"Buffy" debuted on the WB back in 1997, but by 1999 Angel had proven popular enough to get his own spin-off, with "Angel" airing on the same network that year. In that first season of the spin-off show, Buffy's former beau is joined by Eliza Dushku's Faith, another slayer who was "called" following the death of Kendra, yet another slayer "called" after Buffy temporarily died in season one.

Buffy's friends are at risk of turning into vampires due to the constant vampire attacks in Sunnydale, showcasing the high stakes of the show's supernatural battles. Several key characters in Buffy the Vampire Slayer have been turned into vampires, such as Jesse, Angel, Harmony, and even Buffy herself in a nightmare sequence. Spike's backstory and desire for love as a human explains his loyalty to Drusilla and his actions throughout the series, shedding light on his complex character.
Buffy the Vampire Slayer follows a high schooler named Buffy given the title of Slayer to protect her hometown of Sunnydale, but even with her protection, a number of characters turned into vampires in the show. With hoards of vampires constantly terrorizing the town, things are bound to fall through the cracks. Sometimes, those things happen to be her friends who stand less of a chance fighting against supernatural creatures.

For as long as TV has existed, it has been used as a scapegoat for social and cultural issues. In a 1961 speech, FCC chairmen Newton Minow declared the format a "vast wasteland" of programming. In the 1970s, dozens of CBS affiliates chose not to show the historic episode of "Maude" that tackled abortion in reruns, caving to the pressure of critics who thought it would encourage viewers to do the same. The '80s saw the Satanic Panic, in which TV at large got swept up in a whirlwind of conspiracy, cited alongside metal music and board games as negative influences on the state of American children's souls.
Then there were the '90s. While the paranoid attitudes behind the Satanic Panic still raged on in some households, America became gripped by an unimaginable and seemingly new phenomenon: the school shooting. A few school shootings had happened before the 1990s,...

A new rumor surrounding X-Men '97 claims that a character with connections to both Cyclops and Jean Grey will pop up in the long-awaited Disney+ and Marvel Studios series.
Over on Can We Get Some Toast's Instagram account, a post was shared announcing that Madelyne Pryor/Goblin Queen will "make her animated debut" in X-Men '97. In the comics, Pryor is an evil clone of Jean Grey created by Mister Sinister -- whose name is mentioned alongside the word "Cloning" in the post's description -- and was married to Cyclops. Fittingly, the proclamation about Madelyne's supposed appearance in the series has an image of her next to one of Jean. However, as this news is just a rumor for now, it should be taken lightly.

Back in 1990, legendary scream queen Linnea Quigley – whose many horror movie credits include The Return of the Living Dead, Night of the Demons, Witchtrap, Graduation Day, Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-o-Rama, Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers, Nightmare Sisters, A Nightmare on Elm Street 4: The Dream Master, and Silent Night, Deadly Night – made her own hour-long, horror-themed workout video. Directed by Kenneth J. Hall, Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout has the following synopsis: After a nice shower, Linnea does some warm-up stretches and then goes for a run. X-Men '97 head writer and executive producer Beau DeMayo has left Twitter.
In a statement posted on his Twitter page, DeMayo announced that he was leaving the social media platform following several heated exchanges with fans over the casting of X-Men member Sunspot. "Well, guys, sad to say. This page will be going dark for a bit. Could be a week. Could be a year. I haven’t slept. Advocation matters. I value fan’s opinions but the sheer amount of vitriol in the last 24-hours is truly taxing, and actually risks working against what you’re trying to do as it’s now closed off an access point because I have to protect myself," he wrote. DeMayo explained that decided to leave Twitter after being attacked "over a leak I can’t really discuss at the moment. I am not the typical person you see in this position with this sort of property,...

Right now is an excellent time to be a fan of the horror genre and collector of physical media, as there are so many incredible companies doing great work in the space.
Here are five labels every horror fan should be aware of…
Vinegar Syndrome
If you have a deep interest in film preservation and film archives, you may already know the term “vinegar syndrome” which refers to the chemical process that causes a breakdown of film reels over time. These reels smell strongly like vinegar, hence the name.
Vinegar Syndrome the label was founded in 2012 with the goal to preserve and restore films from the 1960s through the 1980s. Preservation has always been top of mind with Vinegar Syndrome. Still, because of their fantastic preservation and restoration work, we also get some of the best DVD, Blu-ray, and 4K releases on the market from their archive.

"Buffy the Vampire Slayer" is remembered for many things: transcending genre, witty dialogue, creating one of TV's greatest female icons, and complex plot lines built on monstrous metaphors, to name a few. These days, creator Joss Whedon may be best known for his abusive behavior on set, but there was a time when his feminist credentials seemed unimpeachable. Despite the revelations about Whedon's actions, his magnum opus remains my favorite series of all time. Although my relationship with the show may be a bit more complicated now, I will never love it any less.
Whedon plotted out "Buffy the Vampire Slayer" seasons well in advance and there are allusions to upcoming storylines scattered throughout the series. One particularly fascinating trail of breadcrumbs leads directly to the death of our hero, Buffy Summers (Sarah Michelle Gellar). The character was killed off in one of the show's best episodes, the season 5 finale "The Gift,...

1981 was a huge year for slasher movies. Not only did we get Friday the 13th Part 2 and Halloween II that year, but we also got a ton of others like My Bloody Valentine, The Prowler, Madman, Just Before Dawn, The Funhouse, Night School, Hell Night, Happy Birthday to Me, Bloody Birthday, Graduation Day, the list goes on… and includes The Burning (watch it Here), the movie we’re looking back at with the latest episode in our video series The Best Horror Movie You Never Saw. Check it out in the embed above!
Directed by Tony Maylam, who also crafted the story with Bob Weinstein, Peter Lawrence, Brad Grey, and, unfortunately, Harvey Weinstein, The Burning has the following synopsis:
At summer camp, some teenagers pull a prank on the camp’s caretaker, Cropsy. But the joke goes terribly wrong, and the teens leave Cropsy for dead after setting him on fire.
