Friday the 13th's upcoming prequel series, which is appropriately called Crystal Lake, has been in the works for years now. Peacock originally ordered the project back in 2022 when Bryan Fuller was still attached as its creator, but Brad Caleb Kane took hold of the baton in August 2024 and replaced Fuller as the creator, showrunner, and writer. Today, casting the role of the younger version of the hockey-masked murderer’s mother is the first major piece of news to break in quite some time, and it’s now official that the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s own Linda Cardellini will portray the killer part of Pamela Voorhees.
Cardellini goes from playing the wife (Laura Barton) of Hawkeye, a.k.a. Clint Barton, in the MCU to portraying the peculiar parent of Camp Blood’s serial-killing mama’s boy, Jason Voorhees. Currently, there aren’t any plot details to reveal about the project,...

Movies are a love language. When you stop to think about it, it’s a grand gesture for hundreds of people to put years of effort, time, and sacrifice into making something for you. On a tangential level, to crib from Roger Ebert’s wise words, movies are an “empathy machine.” We’re allowed to feel some sense of, if not love, then at least compassionate understanding. I’d argue this ability to feel empathy is not limited by genre or subgenre. This is not to say that every movie invites empathy, but rather that it can be found regardless of the aspects that make up the genre.
And yes, that even includes what Ebert called “Dead Teenager Movies,” more commonly known as the slasher film. As recent entries in the subgenre have proven, there’s plenty of compassion to be squeezed from the slasher genre as well. You may...

In Sean Cunningham's 1980 slasher "Friday the 13th," Jason Voorhees is little more than the subject of a notorious ghost story. Camp counselors at Camp Crystal Lake, New Jersey, loved to scare young campers by telling them the very true story of the developmentally disadvantaged who wandered off and drowned in the lake decades earlier. It seems that the counselors who were tasked with caring for Jason were too busy copulating to notice he was in danger. Years later, however, counselors are suddenly being systematically murdered by an unseen assailant. Is it Jason returned from the grave, murdering counselors as revenge?
In the first "Friday," it was revealed that Pamela Voorhees (Betsy Palmer), Jason's mother, had snapped and was killing counselors in honor of her dead son. In "Friday the 13th Part 2," however, it was revealed that Jason had been alive all along, and had grown to adulthood living in the woods,...

When it comes to slasher films, the iconography of the killer is often more important than the story. As long as fans are being given the chance to watch Michael Myers show up in his white-painted Captain Kirk finest to slaughter anyone who gets in his way, no one cares about trying to make sense of the the nonsensical and convoluted timeline of the "Halloween" franchise. Even people who have never watched a horror movie in their life could probably identify Jason Voorhees from "Friday the 13th" in his iconic hockey mask, or clock Leatherface from "The Texas Chain Saw Massacre" even without his titular weapon. The look of a slasher villain should strike fear into the hearts of the audience ... but it should also be memorable enough to be marketable.

Steve Miner is a prolific director known for some of his horror movies that continue to be cult classics in the genre, including iconic sequels in major franchises such as Friday the 13th: Part 2 (1981) and Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998). However, arguably, Miner's most underrated directorial work is the '90s creature feature, Lake Placid. Though other creature features of the time period, such as Anaconda and Tremors, have been widely praised for influencing the horror subgenre, this crocodile movie deserves far more credit than it gets.
Despite having a 47% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a slightly higher rating on IMDb with a 5.8/10, Lake Placid is one of the most impressive dark comedy creature features in the niche genre.

Stephen King spends a lot of his time writing ... and by a lot I mean a lot, judging by the Jenga-like towering pile of novels, novellas, and short stories the King of Horror has written over his lifetime. And when he's not writing, he's probably got his nose in a book somewhere, be it a surefire future best-seller by Liane Moriarty or some niche tome that's piqued his interest. But when he's not doing either of those things, King is likely either streaming that critically-acclaimed TV show your dweebiest sibling won't shut up about or renewing his cineaste card by watching one of the year's most buzzed-about indie or non-franchise genre flicks.

When Friday the 13th (1980) was first released into theaters, there was not a lot of hope for a sustained franchise. After all, they knock off most of the characters and the villain out of the gate. Yet in the last days of filming, Jason Voorhees made his first appearance, and Friday the 13th became a twelve-film phenomenon. With December 13th falling on a Friday, it’s a perfect time to revisit the fun franchise.
12. Friday the 13th Part V: A New Beginning (1985)
It’s almost unfair to rank this movie this low. However, Friday the 13th Part V is a mess from beginning to end. After Corey Feldman’s cameo, it takes more than twenty-five minutes for Jason to return to the screen. Even then, it’s not the Voorhees we’ve come to love. The result was so disastrous, that producers decided to bring Jason back from the dead immediately.

Director/producer Sean S. Cunningham has admitted that his 1980 slasher film "Friday the 13th" was a deliberate effort to imitate the style and success of John Carpenter's "Halloween," which had come out only two years prior. Cunningham tried to copt Carpenter's "killer's eye perspective" camera angles, and it's no coincidence that both films take place on dates famous for horror, bad luck, and death. Cunningham's gambit was successful, though, and his $550,000 movie ended up making nearly $60 million at the box office. It also spawned 11 sequels, many of which came to define the horror trends of the '80s. Although none of the "Friday the 13th" movies are particularly beloved by critics, they are a gestalt-defining phenomenon.
Holiday-themed horror films began popping up regularly in theaters. The years after "Friday the 13th" saw the release of "April Fool's Day," "New Year's Evil," "Prom Night," and "Silent Night, Deadly Night."

In 1980, Friday the 13th kicked off a whole new franchise that has since become one of the most indelible parts of the slasher genre, if not horror as a whole. Throughout the course of a dozen feature films, the Friday the 13th franchise has cut down hundreds of characters, transforming its tent pole slasher, Jason Voorhees, into one of the most prolific killers in the genre.
Of course, not every Friday the 13th film has the same body count, nor do they all hold up as triumphs of filmmaking. In fact, many of the franchise's entries have gone on to hold a special place in the hearts of fans not for how good they are as movies unto themselves, but for the overtly absurd directions that they pushed the franchise toward. That being said, every Friday the 13th film has something to offer audiences, and what they offer is always...

In 2000, during the prime of the slasher boom from the Scream trilogy, the Wayans brothers made Scary Movie, which is often regarded as the best horror parody of all time. It led to a franchise, with each new entry poking fun at whatever was popular in the genre at the time. However, despite how popular they all were, they all pale in comparison to a little film from 1981 called Student Bodies. This horror parody lovingly mocks slashers, and it's surprising just how effectively it has all the tropes nailed down for a subgenre that was just starting to explode. 1981 gave us Halloween II, Friday the 13th Part 2, The Burning, and The Prowler among many others, and Student Bodies had them all figured out immediately. A cast of no names produced a parody that all horror fans need to see.

Following the excitement of Freddy vs Jason putting the two slasher icons against one another, fans have been hoping for Jason vs Michael Myers and other horror movie match-ups to see who can beat the hockey mask-wearing killer. Ever since Jason was introduced in Friday the 13th Part 2 in his true villainous role, he has stacked a massive horror movie body count and cemented himself as one of the most formidable killers in the genre. While Freddy Krueger put up a good fight in their crossover film, Jason came out on top.
For decades, fans have speculated which horror baddies Jason would utterly beat down in a one-on-one bout and sometimes, which ones would deliver a knockout themselves. Jason Voorhees has already faced off against fellow slasher movie icons in comics and movies in the past. However, it remains a tantalizing 'What If...' type scenario to imagine the...

Another Friday the 13th is upon us – unfortunately, we’re just talking about the date, not the release of a new Friday the 13th movie. Halloween approaches and with it the desire to revisit some of your favorite horror movie franchise, in order, from start to finish. What better franchise to binge than “Friday the 13th,” the celebrated slasher film series that started with Sean S. Cunningham’s 1980 original before spawning sequels that would introduce iconic killer Jason Voorhees before sending him to Manhattan, outer space and back in time (Ok we made that last one up).
Ostensibly the cornerstone of the 1980s slasher film craze, “Friday the 13th” is one of the more inventive franchises, particularly when the concept was given a little more elasticity. For more than a decade, though, the franchise has been fully dormant – the last movie was 2009’s Michael Bay-produced reboot/remake “Friday the 13th.” A24 did recently announce a “Crystal Lake” series to be overseen by “Hannibal”/”Pushing Daisies” mastermind Bryan Fuller, so at least we have that to look forward to!

Jason Voorhees is the iconic hockey mask-wearing antagonist of the Friday The 13th franchise, though there are many times his headwear has been removed to show the gruesome face beneath. When anyone thinks of Jason Voorhees, the image of the iconic hockey mask instantly comes to mind. However, for the fans, the face behind the mask is always a highlight. Usually saved until the climactic final act, Jason's face is revealed, and over the course of eleven movies, each unmasked Jason is unique.
When Jason Voorhees was first scene in the final moments of 1980's Friday The 13th, he emerged from Camp Crystal Lake to drag final girl, Alice, dopwn into the depths. While this was only a dream, and the creature that grabbed her had no mask, Alice correctly predicted that Jason was still alive. Although In A Violent Nature owes an obvious creative debt to the Friday the 13th series, the indie horror movies direct connection with the slasher franchise is easy to miss. 2024s In A Violent Nature is a slasher movie like no other. Filmed in a style reminiscent of Terrence Malick and Gus Van Sant, In A Violent Nature is a meditatively paced horror that takes place from the slasher villains point of view. Great swathes of the movies relaxed runtime are spent wandering through empty, quiet woods and across idyllic fields, only for every human encounter to end gruesomely.

Throughout the Friday the 13th series, many actors have played the iconic killer, Jason Voorhees, some better than others. Jason Voorhees cycled through looks and costumes across the years, as well as actors, many of whom only played the character once. The films sometimes brought in different actors in each movie to stand in for Jason when he wasn't wholly on screen, but each movie generally has one or, in some cases, two actors associated with the role. Many shots of the killer remain faceless, mirroring Jason's menacing yet sneaky killing style.

The character design allowed him to be played solely by stuntmen since throughout the Friday the 13th franchise, Jason kills but doesn't speak. New Friday the 13th inspired art shows a look at Jason and his mother. Jason Voorhees is the classic masked killer from the series Friday the 13th. The first Friday the 13th movie was released in 1980, and followed up in 1981 with Friday the 13th Part 2. Since then, there have been multiple renditions of Friday the 13th, including more sequels and a 2009 remake. Jason is now one of the most popular horror villains out there, and is transformed into countless Halloween costumes.
Now, art from @master_of_cringe_art shows a look at Jason and his mother. The artists revealed the digital art in a series of photos. In the first photo, Jason is seen in his full killer garb, replete with his iconic mask. He embraces his mother, Mrs. Voorhees. In subsequent images, the artist showed some in-progress shots of how the piece went from a sketch to a fully colored in art piece.

Ripped To Shreds is a period-authentic graphic novel adaptation of Michael Johnson’s “lost slasher” screenplay from 1980. Originally scheduled to begin filming in Dec. 1980, Ripped To Shreds went through years of development hell before funding ultimately fell through and production collapsed.
Now, nearly 45 years later, the long-lost script is getting a faithful adaption in graphic novel form. At long last, fans of 80s horror can, in some way, see what might have been.
About the adaptation:
Adaptation director Scott Alan Gregory, artist Thiago Motta, and colorist Karla Aguilar have taken period-accuracy seriously. The overall experience is painstakingly designed to mimic the feeling of watching an actual 80s slasher film. Wardrobes, props, settings, camera angles, and even the filmic color palettes of the 80s have been faithfully recreated for the book.
Friday the 13th connection:
Russell Todd and Lauren-Marie Taylor from “Friday the 13th Part 2” reunite… in comic book form!

Amy Steel, John Furey, Adrienne King, Stuart Charno and Tom McBride star in Friday the 13th Part II, wherein Jason Voorhees officially begins his decades-spanning murder spree.

You don't need to have seen the first Friday the 13th film to know its killer twist. Just watch Scream, and you'll learn from Ghostface that it's not Jason Voorhees who was the killer in that movie, but his mother, Pamela (Betsy Palmer). Just because there's no guy in a hockey mask slashing teenagers doesn't mean that the original Friday the 13th isn't as good as the sequels. It still works and even features a fun early performance from Kevin Bacon, and a stellar final girl in the form of Alice Hardy (Adrienne King). Even though Alice survives the events of Camp Crystal Lake in a film that was a big success (it made nearly $40 million at the box office), she is quickly killed off by Jason in the very first scene of 1981's Friday the 13th Part 2. This wasn't done because of creative or salary issues. Instead, Adrienne...

Lauren-Marie Taylor may be best known for her role as the plucky, resilient Vickie in the iconic slasher sequel Friday the 13th Part 2, a film that cemented her place in the annals of horror history. Her portrayal of the tenacious camp counselor, caught in Jason Voorhees’ lethal path, left an indelible mark on genre fans and established her as a scream queen to watch. Yet, Taylor’s career is far from confined to the shadows of Crystal Lake. Fast forward to today, and she’s stepping back into the spotlight with her role in the chilling new horror In a Violent Nature.
In a Violent Nature is a modern slasher that delves deep into the human psyche, exploring themes of nature, survival, and the primal instincts that reside within us all. The film, directed by rising talent Chris Nash, has been generating significant buzz for its intense atmosphere and innovative style.

Flanagan's horror track record establishes him as the perfect candidate to revive the Friday the 13th franchise. His success in adapting classic horror novels showcases his ability to breathe new life into beloved horror stories. Flanagan's involvement with Stephen King projects makes him a busy director, but one can still hope for a Friday the 13th reboot.
Mike Flanagan's established history of hits in the horror genre makes it hard not to believe that only he can save the Friday the 13th franchise. While Mike Flanagan has been involved with filmmaking for over two decades, he did not garner mainstream attention until the early 2010s when he started directing full-feature films. He further rose in the ranks as a horror director when his movies like Hush and Gerald's Game started receiving wide acclaim from both viewers and critics.

There are also plenty of brutal slashers from the 1980s, including the Tom Savini movies The Burning and The Prowler.

Helmed by director and special effects supervisor Chris nNsh, the movie, which stars Ry Barrett, Andrea Pavlovic, Cameron Love, Liam Leone, and Reece Presley, has turned out a solid performance on Rotten Tomatoes, earning a Certified Fresh score of 83% aggregated from reviews written by more than 100 critics.

Between its striking title, lurid artwork, and the timing of its release — 1981 bore the likes of Halloween II, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, The Burning, The Funhouse, The Prowler, and Happy Birthday to Me — one might mistake Butcher, Baker, Nightmare Maker (also known as Night Warning) for a run-of-the-mill slasher flick. While it vaguely fits in the slice-and-dice mold, the film is anything but generic.
The prologue — which may have inspired Final Destination 2‘s unforgettable opening sequence — was directed by Michael Miller with cinematography by Jan de Bont, but Miller was let go by the production after falling behind schedule. He was replaced by TV veteran William Asher, who shot the remainder of the film with Robbie Greenberg as director of photography.
14 years after his parents were killed in an over-the-top car crash, Billy Lynch witnesses his infantilizing aunt-turned-guardian, Cheryl Roberts, kill a repair man in cold blood.

The Friday the 13th franchise has received a new update. The most recently announced installment in the franchise is a planned Peacock prequel series with A24 and Bryan Fuller, though the showrunner recently departed the project.

JoBlo.com recently launched a new weekly documentary series called 80s Horror Memories, where each year of the 1980s has five episodes dedicated to it. Looking back at 1980, we discussed Maniac, Dressed to Kill, Alligator, Friday the 13th, The Shining, Prom Night, and The Fog. The second five episodes were a journey through 1981, covering The Funhouse, The Burning, Friday the 13th Part 2, My Bloody Valentine, Halloween II, The Evil Dead, The Howling, and An American Werewolf in London, as well as the careers of horror hosts Elvira and Joe Bob Briggs. The next five were, of course, all about movies that came out in 1982: Conan the Barbarian, The Thing, Halloween III: Season of the Witch, and Poltergeist, with an examination of the short-lived 3-D boom along the way. For 1983, we talked about a trio of Stephen King adaptations, Jaws 3-D, Sleepaway Camp, the rise of TV horror anthologies, and Psycho II.

The television franchise that began with Pretty Little Liars on Freeform (starting back when the channel was known as ABC Family) and continued with two short-lived spin-offs on Freeform – Ravenswood and Pretty Little Liars: The Perfectionists – moved over to the Max streaming service in 2022 with a new series called Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin, which leaned further into horror territory. The second season of the new series is titled Pretty Little Liars: Summer School, and last week we learned that it’s set to make its Max premiere on May 9th. With that date just three weeks away, a trailer has arrived online, and you can check it out in the embed above.

Written and Directed by Stevan Mena on a budget of around $200,000, Malevolence was only released in ten theaters after it was purchased by Anchor Bay and released direct-to-dvd like so many other indie horrors. This one has many of the same pratfalls as its bargain bin brethren, which have probably helped to keep it hidden all these years. But it also has some unforgettable moments that will make horror fans (especially fans of the original Halloween) smile and point at the TV like Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.
Malevolence is the story of a silent and masked killer told through the lens of a group of bank robbers hiding out after a score. The bank robbery is only experienced audibly from the outside of the bank, but whether the film has the budgetary means to handle this portion well or not, the idea of mixing a...
