[Note: This article contains major spoilers for the Pretty Little Liars: Summer School finale, "Chapter Eight: Final Exam.”]
Pencils down, everyone! After eight bloody episodes, Max’s Pretty Little Liars: Summer School wrapped up its sophomore season on Thursday with a killer finale. The teen drama slasher picks up directly after the events of Original Sin and follows Imogen (Bailee Madison), Tabby (Chandler Kinney), Faran (Zaria), Mouse (Malia Pyles), and Noa (Maia Reficco) as they’re tormented by a mysterious new villain, Bloody Rose.
The season finale, “Chapter Eight: Final Exam,” finally reveals Bloody Rose’s identity: Chip’s (Carson Rowland) mother, Mrs. Langsberry (Carey Van Driest). After Chip was murdered by “A” in the Season 1 finale, she became obsessed with getting revenge on Tabby and Imogen for “lying” about her son raping them. However, there’s a twist — Wes (Derek Klena), Tabby’s boss at the movie theater, has been her accomplice this whole time.

Spoiler alert: The following article contains spoilers from Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 7, "Chapter Seventeen: The Bogeyman."
Noa chooses Jen over Shawn in Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 7, and Shawn allegedly punches a hole in the wall in Noa's apartment when he learns she cheated on him. Mouse attempts to stop "The Reckoning," but her Spooky Spaghetti antics backfire. Bloody Rose seemingly kills Kelly at the end of the episode.
Although the end of Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 6 revealed that Imogen's mother is alive (and Bloody Rose), episode 7 quickly informs viewers that the truth behind season 2's villain isn't that simple. Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa and Lindsay Calhoon Bring's Max slasher teen drama television series has teased who Bloody Rose is all season long, and the writers are seemingly holding the big reveal until the finale. Nevertheless, Pretty Little Liars: Summer School episode 7 features several shocking moments...

With roots in real-life murders, “The Hook” urban legend goes hand-in-hand — or should I say hand-in-hook? — with the slasher genre. After being referenced in ’80s slashers He Knows You’re Alone and Final Exam, it went on to at least partially inspire five slashers from the ’90s: Candyman, I Know What You Did Last Summer, Urban Legend, Campfire Tales, and Lovers Lane. Unfortunately, the latter is the least effective of the bunch.
To be fair, Lovers Lane was made independently for $500,000 — a fraction of the budget of the studio films — before being released direct to video in 1999. Directed by Jon Steven Ward and written by Geof Miller (DeepStar Six) and Rory Veal, the film is best remembered for being the film debut of Anna Faris, one year prior to her starring turn in Scary Movie. It was on this set that she met co-star Ben Indra, to whom she was...

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Most entries in the slasher canon of the 1980s have long since been forgotten by audiences. Movies like Final Exam and Blood Lake were panned by critics and eventually swept under the cinematic rug. But Wes Craven’s 1984 supernatural gem, A Nightmare on Elm Street, is still praised as one of the greatest horror movies ever made.

Finally, the Daily Dead “Class Of” series has reached my beloved birth year, 1981. For the genre, 1981 signifies an important moment in the history of horror. With the introduction of two slasher icons, Michael Myers in 1978 and Jason Voorhees in 1980; the beginning of the sequel boom that would dominate the rest of the decade was born in 1981 with Halloween 2 and Friday the 13th Part 2. These two sequels are merely the introduction to the rise of slasher cinema for the 80s, with 1981 providing a variety of examples like The Burning, Graduation Day, The Prowler, Funhouse, Happy Birthday to Me, Final Exam, Night School, Student Bodies, and My Bloody Valentine.
1981 also proved the best year in the history of horror for werewolf movies. The iconic American Werewolf in London set the gold standard in practical transformation effects. The Howling is a demonstration of how horror and humor can coexist perfectly. Wolfen...

’90s nostalgia is in full swing, and horror fans are loving it. Many people are revisiting movies they grew up with, while others are discovering those same titles for the first time. And it’s not only cinematic terror that has everyone talking.
Over the past couple of years, the interest in retro books has been on the rise. Combined with ’90s sentimentality, teen horror fiction from the decade has become a special niche for collectors, many of whom are part of Instagram’s enthusiastic community of “bookstagrammers.”
A large portion of the teen horror titles released during the ’90s are now available in e-book format, but the original editions with their colorful covers and witty taglines are the ones we look for while perusing the shelves of used bookstores.
Here at Daily Dead, during a series of seasonal posts, I’m going to be sharing books from my own collection.

When we talk about Halloween and Friday the 13th launching a wave of rip-offs, we’re talking about movies like Final Exam. It came out so soon after Friday the 13th that you’d think its similarities were coincidences, but the truth is that Mpm Productions simply made the movie double quick. Six months from absolutely nothing to prints in theaters. […]

A peaceful sky, wind in the trees, a ladybug sitting on a blade of wheat. Nothing happens in New Caney, Texas. On Halloween night, the picture-perfect Americana of this farming town is quiet, and remains undisturbed. Time moves painfully slowly. Rose sits by herself, smoking a cigarette, scaring the kids away. She wears a mask, like so many others that night. With her husband, freshly back from the war, Rose is off to the village’s annual horror show. Everything is fake – the scar, the red paper blood and the harness on the hanged woman. Only death is real. But the only way to tell you about death is to let you see it for yourself.

Originally titled Recovery (which makes sense given that a key plot point in the film involves recovering a phone), Hide and Seek is one of those movies that made a splash online when first announced and then seemigly died a death – sneaking out onto DVD and VOD this week without any fanfare. Which, given how mundane this film is, may be the best possible outcome for the movie… For without the negativity of reviews, Darrell Wheat’s modern-day slasher movie may just find an audience.
Hide and Seek opens on a creepy family who, it turns out, have a girl trapped in a trunk in the basement! From what I can gather in the all-too-brief intro, is that...

The late ‘80s signaled the end of my first golden age of horror. Which is to say two things: adulthood beckoned, and horror films – especially slashers - were running low on inspiration (remember the early ‘90s wasteland? Brr.). However, looking across the waters, some veteran Italian filmmakers weren’t throwing in the towel yet. Michele Soavi’s Stage Fright (1987) stands apart from the crowd because it proved that not only was the beaten and flogged sub-genre alive, it was still capable of surprising fans with enough fresh blood pumping through its weary veins to make you sit up and notice. Just when you thought you couldn’t survive another hack ‘em up, Stage Fright made you a believer again.

You won’t need us to tell you that this Thursday, November 27th is Thanksgiving across the States, which means one thing: an abundance of food and celebration. Well, it also means another scenario — that’s right, Black Friday. And so, to commemorate the occasion, Microsoft has unveiled the extensive line-up of games that are due to receive a discount as part of the company’s Deals with Gold promotion.
As is always the case, Xbox players will need to have an Xbox Live subscription in order to gain access to the offers, which will run through until December 1st. Discounting an array of software across both Xbox One and Xbox 360, Microsoft has pulled no punches this year, with some games being available for a full 80% cheaper than their standard price.

Students on a college campus are stalked by a malicious murderer: horror film fans have seen this setup in many films like Final Exam, Scream 2, and Urban Legend, but we’ve never seen Ryan Murphy’s take on this story setup. That will change by next year, though, as the American Horror Story co-creator is moving forward on a university-set horror-comedy series called Scream Queens for Fox.
Set for a fall 2015 premiere, the first season of Scream Queens will consist of 15 one hour-long episodes. Similar to the American Horror Story structure, Scream Queens will tell a different story in a new environment each season.
Press release via Yahoo: “Los Angeles (Reuters) – Fox has ordered anthology series “Scream Queens” from the creator of ‘Glee” and “American Horror Story,” the U.S. television network said on Monday, as broadcast TV takes a cue from a format largely successful on cable networks.

Because of the scrappy, can-do success of Friday the 13th, audiences in cinemas were hit with a deluge of slasher movies, some pretty nifty and others that weren’t so hot. Though in my not so esteemed opinion, even the not so-hot ones had a roughshod, scattershot attitude that elevated them far above the generic knockoffs that this particularly unloved sub-genre would put out on a monthly basis. Some weeks, you’d get Just Before Dawn and others you get Splatter University.

If you consider yourself a Final Exam fan, then picking up the Scream Factory Blu-ray is a no-brainer-you’re going to be more than pleased with their efforts on this release. For the uninitiated, Final Exam may or may not earn high marks from you, depending on your level of patience for a whole lot of talking and not much else.
Final Exam starts off promising enough with two college students parked one night who are attacked by a mysterious maniac (even though both actors seem less than terrified by their predicament). The following day, Final Exam then picks up over at Lanier College where we are introduced to a group of students who are in the midst of taking their final exams, so that they can finish up the semester and head home for the summer. Of course, the mysterious killer from Final Exam’s opening arrives on campus...

Most home video releases are mass produced and marketed by faceless conglomerates interested only in separating you from your hard-earned cash. If you look closely though you’ll find smaller labels who love movies as much as you do and show it by delivering quality Blu-rays and DVDs of beloved films and cult classics, often loaded with special features, new transfers, and more. But yes, they still want your cash, too. It’s no secret that one of my favorite specialty labels these days is Scream Factory. They simply understand genre fans and reward us handsomely with high definition transfers of our favorite horror flicks from the past. Their contemporary releases leave much to be desired (Cockneys vs Zombies aside), but more often than not when they reach decades back for a film the result is something fantastic at best or fun at worst. Their “Summer of Fear” begins this month with five new releases, and...

As if we needed any more reasons to want to cuddle The Scream Factory until our arms dropped off lifeless and withered, they announced today that another little known classic from the 1980s is on its way!
Via the Scream Factory Facebook Page
We are very thrilled to report that we are bringing Greydon Clark’s 1980 alien/slasher cult classic Without Warning to DVD & Blu-ray for the first time this August! This long-overdue release has been requested several times since we started the brand so we know many of you just jumped for joy. (We're jumping too!) What makes this even more exciting is that this title has never been released on Any home entertainment format in the U.S. or Canada (and is often bootlegged as some of you can attest to) so to be able to bring this out period is a feat in itself.

This summer Scream Factory will be releasing special editions of Final Exam, Evilspeak, Nosferatu (1979), Sleepaway Camp, Ravenous, Dog Soldiers, Hellhole, Deadly Eyes, Ginger Snaps, and Phantom of the Paradise. Will you still have room in your Blu-ray budget for Lake Placid?
For that matter, do you even care about owning Steve Miner’s 1999 crocodilian horror comedy written by David E. Kelley? Even as a fan of nature gone amok movies, I found foul-mouthed Betty White to be about the only memorable aspect of Lake Placid.

“Fans of early 80s school-themed horror films are in luck with this news. 1981′s college campus slasher film Final Exam and 1982′s satanic revenge epic Evilspeak (starring Clint Howard) will both be making their debuts on Blu-ray both for the first time this Summer!

Playing games can be a complicated experience sometimes, sometimes we want to play first person shooters, sometimes we want to play sports games and sometimes we want to play something that will make our brain work overtime. Then of course there are those times when we just want to beat up wave after wave of monsters just for the hell of it…
Welcome to the game that is Final Exam.
Final Exam takes a school reunion and sticks it into an apocalyptic fight through what appears to be hell. With a selection of characters ranging from the jock to the nerd you have the choice to play these characters and then do one simple thing, get smashing some monster skulls. With a nice slice of humour and plenty of horror tropes Final Exam is another addition to the 2.5D platform game with a focus on having fun and not getting...

Final Exam is a gritty, flamboyant, and…wait, what? Gritty and flamboyant? You got it. Mighty Rocket Studios has developed a side-scroller that wraps up its multiple personalities in a pretty package and slams you in the face with it like Christmas morning. The best part? Campiness and brutality seamlessly meld together in a game that will have you and your friends laughing, panicking, and smashing your way through the night.
As with most games in this genre, the story is all but non-existent. Four buddies bathe in the would-be glory of partying at their old high school, but end up in a predicament where they bathe in the blood of monstrous creatures instead. Along the way, they meet quirky survivors of this outbreak, and aid them in the most outrageous and random ways: from finding lost children in a theme park to chasing down a cowardly mechanic, the “story” never feels old,...

More often than not, horror films are filled with decapitations, amputations, disembowelment, and more. Particularly with the introduction of the ‘torture porn’ subgenre, we are seeing more and more violence and excess in horror cinema. Sometimes it’s effective. Sometimes, watching the film’s cast of characters endure the kind of violence we wouldn’t wish on our worst enemy is a turn off to audiences.
What we don’t see a lot of these days, though, is films that shy away from on-screen violence and opt for atmosphere over arterial spray. But it isn’t impossible to find. For example, James Wan's The Conjuring, which opened this weekend with a massive $41.5 million, relies on clapping hands, immobile dolls, and creeping shadows to terrify the audience. In fact, some of our most beloved films from years past are less intense than we might remember them. There have been several...

School kids around the country have summer vacation in their sights. All that.s left, for most of them, is to complete a final exam and put a big, fat exclamation point on the past school year. And the same is going on at Monsters University, where Disney and Pixar Animation Studios are helping us gear up for their anticipated prequel with one last trailer, dubbed The Final Exam, that landed on YouTube. I.m not seeing a ton of new footage in this final clip. Mike (Billy Crystal) still arrives at college ready to study scaring. He butts heads with Sully (John Goodman), a natural scarer from a long line of scarers. And the mismatched duo must compete in . and win . the dreaded Scare Games when they get themselves into hot water with the vicious Dean Hardscrabble (Helen Mirren), who doesn.t really believe in the potential of either...
