Five Must See Zombie Horror Movies to Stream This Week
Image
Zombies remain one of the most eternal movie monsters, whether their origin is viral in nature or voodoo-related. The reanimated corpses driven by an insatiable need to consume flesh provide fertile ground for horror, also doubling as a reflection of our current sociopolitical fears, making their evolution in film one of the most interesting.

With more seasons of “The Walking Dead” spinoffs still going strong and the recent releases of Ziam and 28 Years Later, this week’s streaming picks salute zombie horror movies that showcase flesh eaters in stylish, gory form. Here’s where to stream them this week.

Image
M Content, the production company founded by Amaya Muruzábal, the creative force behind Amazon MGM Studios’ “Red Queen,” is partnering with leading Irish prodco Vico Films to produce historical epic series project “The Patricios.”

Created and written by Muruzábal, the real-facts based series is set in 1846 and follows the Saint Patrick’s Battalion during the U.S.–Mexico War, when a group of Irish immigrants enlisted in the Texas Rangers deserted the U.S. army to join the Mexican side. They fought until their final stand at San Ángel, when they were captured and sentenced to death.

Director Julián de Tavira is attached to direct.

“The Patricios” narrates the story of a forgotten war that changed the course of history — and whose consequences still shape the world today.

“It is not just a story from the past, but a deeply relevant exploration of identity, justice, migration and the blending of cultures...

Don't look now, but something supernatural may be afoot within The Sopranos. 10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Modern Reboot
Image
Several iconic horror movies from earlier decades just don’t hold up to today’s standards, which often makes them get overlooked by modern audiences. At the time of their release, they might have been groundbreaking, but with their limited technology and simpler storytelling, a lot of them can easily feel outdated nowadays. Additionally, older horror films often relied on implied scares and slow build-ups, which is why they don't really hold the attention of today’s viewers.

Modern audiences want a faster pace, more exciting horrors, and complex characters. Plus, certain themes from old-school movies just don’t click with the way we see the world now. That’s where new adaptations come in. From Re-Animator to Cannibal Holocaust, there are quite a few iconic horror movies that deserve a modern reboot. If done right, these titles could get a fresh spin while honoring the originals' legacy, giving them...

10 Best Mystery Movies From The 1980s That Can Still Keep You Guessing
Image
Mystery movies have been around since the very early days of cinema, and are still incredibly popular today. For over a century, audiences have loved watching as a mystery unfolds onscreen. After all, it is difficult to resist a film that allows the viewer to feel like an active participant, getting roped into the story and trying to solve the crime before the characters onscreen. The best mysteries, though, are often the ones that the viewers are unable to solve on their own. These movies keep their audiences guessing until the last moment.

While filmmakers have been making mystery movies for generations upon generations, few eras have been quite as exciting for the genre as the 1980s. This decade featured an onslaught of well-executed mysteries covering a wide range of topics. With films ranging from silly whodunits to dark, serious investigations, the '80s promised something for all sorts of mystery lovers.

Irish Vampire Movie ‘Feed’ Pits Social Media Influencers Up Against Vampires
Bram Stoker
Based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula as well as an Irish legend, the upcoming vampire movie Feed has begun production ahead of the American Film Market next week, Deadline reports.

From director Marco van Belle (Mercy), the upcoming vampire movie Feed is being shot in Ireland. Fitting, given that the film is inspired by the Irish myth of the Dearg Due.

According to Wikipedia (linked above), “Dearg-due, an Irish name meaning ‘red bloodsucker,’ is a female demon that seduces men and then drains them of their blood.”

“The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber.”

Grace Collender (Fréwaka) stars alongside Clinton Liberty, Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

“With people using social media to...

Irish Female Vampire Feature ‘Feed’ Begins Production Ahead Of AFM
Image
Marco van Belle’s Irish female vampire origin feature Feed has begun shooting in Ireland’s coastal region of County Wexford, which also recently hosted the shoot of Small Things like These, as Metro International Entertainment continues sales at AFM.

The film follows a group of twenty something social media influencers who spend a weekend at a remote contemporary house in an Irish forest, and must fight for their lives when they awaken the world’s original vampire from her slumber. Van Belle previously wrote sci-fi Mercy starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Annabelle Wallis, which is currently in post-production.

It gathers an ensemble cast of emerging Irish and UK talent, including Grace Collender (Fréwaka), Clinton Liberty Daisy Jelley, Niamh Hogan, Rhys Mannion and Oskar Smith.

Feed takes its cue from the Irish myth of the Dearg Due, which also inspired Irish writer Bram Stoker’s ‘Dracula’.

Writer and director Van Belle previously wrote sci-fi Mercy starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Annabelle Wallis, which is currently in post-production.

“With people using social media to make their mark and get rich quick, I’m fascinated to explore the fragility of modern influencer culture by putting our characters against a ruthless creature that has the true power of influence,” said the director

Producers are Ripple World’s Jac Kerrin and Dominic Wright, with Big Safari’s Richard Kondal and Tianna Roberts as UK co-producers.

Niamh Fagan is Executive Producer for Screen Ireland/Fís Éireann, who are providing production finance and financed development. Creativity Capital is providing production finance, with Patrick Fischer executive producing.

Will Machin, Sam Parker and Michael Yates are Executive Producers for Metro International Entertainment who are handling international sales and will launch the film to buyers at the AFM.

The Intruder Within | A cheeky 1981 knock-off put Alien on an oil rig
Image
One of the earliest Alien rip-offs was made for US television. We take a look back at 1981’s The Intruder Within.

Much like Jaws, Star Wars and Mad Max before it, the success of 1979’s Alien prompted studios and producers the world over to make their own hastily-made rip-off movies. Thanks to – shall we say – enterprising filmmakers like Roger Corman and Norman J Warren, we got cheap and cheerful fare like Barracuda (1978), Battle Beyond The Stars (1980) and Inseminoid (1981).

One of the earliest Alien clones to emerge like a shambling monster, though, was The Intruder Within – a low-budget TV movie that cheekily borrowed all sorts of ideas from Ridley Scott’s hit, but transplanted the entire thing from a spaceship in the future to an oil rig in the post-energy crisis early 1980s. As you can probably imagine, it isn’t a lost classic, but it’s fascinating to revisit, both...

The Alien Franchise Creators Reteamed for an Underrated '80s Horror Movie
Image
Quick Links Dead & Buried Was Deceptively Advertised The Return of the Living Dead Was Inspired by Dead & Buried Dead & Buried Has Gained a Large Cult Following in Its Post-Theatrical Life

While the screenplay for the blockbuster 1979 science fiction horror film Alien is solely credited to Dan OBannon, with OBannon sharing a story credit with executive producer Ronald Shusett, the Alien script was also guided by the influence of several other important creative collaborators. OBannons original Alien script was extensively rewritten by producers David Giler and Walter Hill, who introduced the villainous android Ash, while artist Ron Cobb conceived the idea of the films titular creature having acidic blood. Of course, its hard to imagine that the Alien franchise would be nearly as expansive and successful as it is today without the twisted vision of artist H.R. Giger, whose original creature design revolutionized the horror and science fiction genres alongside Alien.

Image
As every new month brings an insane tidal wave of new additions to streaming libraries, it can be tough selecting the perfect watch. Even more so when it comes to Tubi, a streaming platform with a vast, overwhelming selection of titles that include everything from mainstream releases to obscure deep cuts once trapped on VHS.

Because the streaming service excels so well at this with a layout that isn’t always the easiest to navigate when hunting down rare titles or finding the best horror movies on Tubi, we’re here to help.

For February, we’re narrowing it down to twenty horror movies you should watch, from recent gems to required viewing from horror masters. More specifically, this list avoids too many of the obvious classics, like The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (also streaming on Tubi), to instead offer a wider variety slightly off the beaten path.

Screambox Hidden Gems – 5 Horror Movies to Stream This Week Including ‘The Collector’
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

The Collector

If the triumphant return of the Saw franchise has you in the mood for more trap-laden horrors, look no further than The Collector — which was originally conceived as a prequel to Saw that would show Jigsaw’s original story. When producers passed on the idea, writers Patrick Melton & Marcus Dunstan (Saw IV-vii) reworked it into an original script, which Dunstan directed in 2009.

A slasher/home invasion hybrid for the so-called “torture porn” era, The Collector stars Criminal Minds‘ Josh Stewart as struggling ex-con Arkin. A planned heist at his new employer’s home to repay a debt becomes deadly when he...

Dead & Buried (1981) Revisited – Horror Movie Review
Image
The episode of Revisited covering Dead & Buried was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Juan Jimenez, Produced by Tyler Nichols and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.

The slow burn is a somewhat lost and misunderstood art. I say somewhat lost because A24 sure tries their damnedest to give us that once or even a few times a year. Slow burn movies, when done right, are a thing of beauty. They take their time to get you where They want you to go but don’t have to skimp on things like gore, sex, violence, or shock. The Italians mastered it, particularly with their Giallo genre and some of the greatest slow burn horror comes from the early 70s to the mid 80s. When it was able to be translated to American audiences, it didn’t always stick the landing. Dan O’Bannon would give us...

The Resurrected (1991) – Wtf Happened to This Adaptation?
Image
We’ve talked about Stephen King as the king of horror literature, but there’s another name who is pretty important in the grand scheme of horror. He has had tabletop games, video games, comic book adaptations, and movies made after his work. He has sort of become like John Carpenter in a way. You hear all the time how a movie, or its score in particular, is Carpenter-esque and that has happened to one Howard Phillips Lovecraft. He only lived to 46 and had many works published after his death, but also is the man behind the old gods and the Cthulhu mythos. Even when filmmakers and game designers don’t use creations directly from the author’s work, a lot of horror can be considered Lovecraftian. While some of the more famous ones like Re-Animator and From Beyond are stone cold classics, I wanted to look at an underseen adaptation.

‘Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story’ Review
Image
Written by Gary Smart, Neil Morris | Directed by Christopher Griffiths, Gary Smart

Hollywood Dreams & Nightmares: The Robert Englund Story picks up with a 12-year-old Robert being sent to theatre camp getting attention from girls and being complimented by talk show host Steve Allen. That, especially the female attention, pointed him toward his career. And really, what better motivation can a young man have?

Best known for playing Freddy Krueger in the Nightmare on Elm Street franchise, Robert Englund already had a long history in the genre. dating back to Tobe Hooper’s Eaten Alive in 1976. Who could forget his entrance announcing “My name’s Buck, and I’m here to fuck!” and the criminally underrated Dead and Buried in 1981 as well as Galaxy of Terror and a host of others. And it’s continued well past his time as Freddy, most recently doing voice acting in the bizarre puppet film Abruptio.

Image
Happy Saturday, dear readers! I hope that you’ve been enjoying all of our Indie Horror Month coverage so far, and that you’ll continue to join in on the celebration right here on Daily Dead for the rest of April as well. Yesterday, I paid tribute to the wave of independent horror that was released throughout the 1980s (you can read that piece Here) so I thought it only made sense to focus on a most excellent streaming resource where you can find a ton of great indie genre movies from that decade and watch them for free - Tubi TV.

While Tubi’s collection of ‘80s horror is vast, I went ahead and picked out 25 great genre classics that are currently available on their platform to stream, but please know that by no means is this everything from the 1980s that Tubi has to offer, so be sure...

Indie Horror Month 2022: Celebrating the Indie Horror Movies and Moviemakers During the 1980s
Image
Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.

Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

One of my favorite creature features ever is getting some love in HD finally, with Scream Factory’s 4K release of Lewis Teague’s Alligator (and its sequel is headed to Blu-ray this week as well), and the horror comedy Dead Heat is also getting a 4K upgrade. For all you giallo fans out there, Forgotten Gialli: Volume 3 is being released tomorrow and features three more Italian classics genre fans are going to want to own, and Severin Films is keeping busy with a ton of titles this week too: Bloody Pit of Horror, Black Candles, Night of the Demon, and The Halfway House.

Other titles...

Miley Cyrus Gets ‘Honest’ With Fans: ‘I’m Just Finding My Feet Along This Platform Again’
Image
Miley Cyrus says she’s “scared” to be back on stage again after a year of Covid uncertainties limited touring for most of 2021. The singer performed at the Bud Light Super Bowl Music Festival over the weekend in Los Angeles, stopping her set halfway through to have an “honest moment” with the crowd.

“Standing up here right now, it doesn’t feel the same as if you would have come to see me three or four years ago,” she admitted before 15,000 or so fans at Crypto.com Arena. “I’m...

Class of 1981: Revisiting FX Legend Stan Winston’s Creations for Heartbeeps and Dead & Buried
Image
It’s no secret that Stan Winston has been hugely influential on my love for special makeup effects (you can catch up on our previous Stan Winston Week celebration Here) as well as his uncanny ability to create memorable characters that endure the test of time. When it comes to the films of 1981, Winston ran the gamut of makeups and effects that year, contributing to projects like The Hand and Friday the 13th Part 2 all while delivering show-stopping creations for both Gary Sherman’s Dead & Buried as well as the family-friendly comedy Heartbeeps by Allan Arkush, two wildly different films that perfectly showcased Winston’s diverse skill set and enthusiasm for the craft.

As a kid, Heartbeeps was a movie that I came across due to the involvement of Andy Kaufman. My friend’s parents were huge fans of his work and they rented the movie on a whim,...

Happy Friday, dear readers! One of our annual traditions here at Daily Dead is that, once a year, we take a few weeks to celebrate a notable time period in the horror genre. And since 2021 marks the 40th anniversary of all the great classics that were released during 1981, we thought it only made sense to pay tribute to the films of that year with our Class of 1981 series.

Starting on Monday, August 16th, we will be kicking off our two-week celebration of the killer horror and memorable sci-fi movies that were released throughout 1981. And if you feel like celebrating right alongside us, I’ve gone ahead and put together this handy list of where you can stream an assortment of ‘81 classics on a variety of platforms (both subscription-based and free).

And remember, be sure to check back here every day on Daily Dead for all kinds of 1981-related fun, as...

While streaming continues to cut a swath through the modern-day entertainment landscape, there’s a whole generation of cinephiles who remember and understand that an integral part of any true weekend movie binge-fest once involved a trip to the video store, one hour minimum, where lurid cover box art competed more naturally for one’s attention and […]

Wamg Interview: Gary Sherman, Director of Dead & Buried – Now Available on 4K Ultra HD and Blu-ray From Blue Underground
Image
“You can try to kill me, Dan. But you can’t. You can only make me dead. ”

Gary Sherman directed just a half dozen theatrical features in his career (as well as dozens of TV movies and shows), but at least three of those are genuine masterpieces: Death Line (1972 aka Raw Meat), Dead & Buried (1981) and the relentlessly sleazy thriller Vice Squad (1982). Gary took the time to talk to We Are Movie Geeks‘ Tom Stockman about his life, his career, and why he won’t sign Tom’s Raw Meat poster.

The Dead & Buried Exclusive Limited Collector’s Edition includes 4K Uhd Blu-ray, Remastered Blu-ray, Soundtrack CD, Collectible Booklet, Reversible Sleeve and three different 3D Lenticular Slipcovers from Blue Underground will be available on July 20th. Order it Here.

Interview conducted by Tom Stockman June 24th 2021

Jack Frost (1997) or Jack Frost (1998): A Debate to Decide Which is the More Chilling Snowmansploitation Tale
Image
Do you feel that chill in the air? Winter has once again descended to encase us in her cold, deathly embrace. But, of course, winter does not come alone. She brings with her a golem made from the very snow she produces to freeze us down to our bones. This avatar mocks us by shaping itself in a distorted facsimile of the human form cobbled together with coal, carrots, and despair. I refer, of course, to the snowman, the ultimate bodhisattva of the season of death.

Human beings often try to make sense of life’s horrors through story, and in the late ’90s not one, but two films dared plunge the depths of the uncanny dread induced by snowmen. And such was the terrifying nature of both films that they each earned the title Jack Frost.

The first attempt, made in 1997 by Michael Clooney, is what one might call the more straightforward horror tale,...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Mansion Of The Doomed (1976)
Image
Exploitation films were thriving in the ‘70s, and everything was excess. Why have one naked woman when you could have four, or settle for one onscreen flaying when clearly several are in order? Maybe watching Mansion of the Doomed (1976) you’d be content with a single case of eye transplant surgery instead of the six offered? Well, you’d be wrong. This is a film that leans heavy on the nihilism and nastiness of the times, with nary an existential answer yet plenty to talk about.

Doomed seems to be the key word in the title that permeates nearly every frame; other titles include Eyes, Massacre Mansion, and The Terror of Dr. Chaney, with the latter perhaps being the most apropos considering the moral dilemma lies completely on his shoulders. But Mansion of the Doomed works because, well, that mansion is packed with the doomed, protags and antags alike.

Blu-ray Review: Vice Squad Dials up the Crazy
Out on August 13 in North America from Scream Factory comes Gary Sherman's 1982 film Vice Squad. Filmed on the streets of Los Angeles, Sherman directs Season Hubley as Princess, a prostitute who wants a better life for herself and her daughter. However, there's a sicko on the loose (like any day or night in L.A.), and Gary Swanson, plays Tom Walsh, a cop that wants to nab Ramrod, a vicious pimp, for his crimes against women. Walsh ropes in Princess as bait, and we're off to the races. Of course, there are twists and turns, and perversions of justice, so Ramrod's released...

It Came From The Tube: The Possessed (1977)
I’d stop reviewing possession flicks if they had ever stopped making them; well, I’m sure I’ll run out of good ones eventually, but today is not that day. The Possessed (1977) hit the small screen in the wake of demonic giants as a pilot for a series that never took off. What a shame - imagine if we had a Devil of the Week show terrorizing the youth of North America? But TV is littered with the also-rans, and this one is top notch hellfire.

Originally broadcast Sunday, May 1st as a segment of NBC’s The Big Event, The Possessed was up against ABC’s Sunday Night Movie and CBS’ Switch/Delvecchio. Obviously it didn’t generate enough interest to go to series, which is a damn shame because it’s teed up in very intriguing ways.

Let’s open up our faux TV Guide for some...

Raw Meat Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah – ‘Late Night Grindhouse’
“Mind the doors! “

Raw Meat screens Midnights this weekend (June 30th and July 1st) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

Trapped by falling masonry during construction of the London Underground, a group of Victorian workers survive in the bowels of the earth for more than a century, breeding amongst themselves and cannibalizing the dead. A hundred years after their ordeal began, the last remaining descendant (Hugh Armstrong) finds his way back to the surface and begins to abduct people from station platforms in a desperate bid for companionship…..and food.

Despite its lurid title, the 1972 cannibal-in-the-subway movie from Gary Sherman (whose Dead And Buried and Vice Squad have already played Late Night Grindhouse), Raw Meat is one of the most intelligent and boldest horror films of the ‘70s. The opening scenes of...

Death Line aka Raw Meat
This early gore-horror picture has a remarkable emphasis on human values, believe it or not, with a ‘monster’ that nevertheless is a paragon of loving gentleness. Add Donald Pleasance as a surly, posh-hating police inspector, and the shock value makes the Hammer films of the early ’70s taste like weak tea.

Death Line

Blu-ray + DVD

Blue Underground

1972 / Color / 1:85 widescreen / 87 min. / aka Raw Meat / Street Date June 27, 2017 / 39.98

Starring: Donald Pleasence, Norman Rossington, David Ladd, Sharon Gurney, Hugh Armstrong, June Turner, Christopher Lee.

Cinematography: Alex Thomson

Art Direction: Dennis Gordon-Orr

Film Editor: Geoffrey Foot

Original Music: Jeremy Rose, Malone Wil

Written by Ceri Jones from a story by Gary Sherman

Produced by Paul Maslansky

Directed by Gary Sherman

In 1972, making a horror film was a safe way to start a career: almost anything screen-able could get a release, and if your show had enough shock value, it might even get positive critical attention.

Dead And Buried Midnights This Weekend at The Moolah
“You can try to kill me, Dan. But you can’t. You can only make me dead. ”

Dead And Buried screens Midnights this weekend (March 24th and 25th) at The Moolah Theater and Lounge (3821 Lindell Blvd, St. Louis, Mo 63108) as part of Destroy the Brain’s monthly Late Night Grindhouse film series.

1981 was a stellar year for horror films! Just ask Andy Triefenbach, who programs at Late Night Grindhouse midnight series. The Evil Dead, The Burning, My Bloody Valentine, The Beyond, House By The Cemetary, and Nightmare have all played midnights at the Late Night Grindhouse monthly film series in recent years and they all celebrate their 36th anniversary in 2017. Dead And Buried, co-written by St. Louis native Dan O’Bannon (two years after he co-wrote Alien and 3 years before he wrote and directed Return Of The Living Dead – another Lngh fave) may not be as well-known as those shockers,...

Drive-In Dust Offs: Raw Meat aka Death Line (1972)
British horror was still going through a transitional phase by the early ‘70s. Trying to turn people’s perception away from cobweb strewn castles and fog laden swamps, they played in the modern day with such classics as Tales from the Crypt, The Abominable Dr. Phibes, The Vault of Horror, Theatre of Blood, and Asylum. (Okay, those are either anthologies or Vincent Price films, but there are many other goodies as well.) So strong was the vibe that an American made the leap across the pond for his directorial debut, Raw Meat Aka Death Line (1972), a grimy, funny, and surprisingly poignant first effort from Gary Sherman (Dead and Buried).

Released in England in ’72 under the original Death Line title, it would take until September of ’73 to be unleashed on American soil by Aip under its better known moniker. Critics were decidedly mixed on Raw Meat; Roger Ebert considered it a “good debut” for Sherman,...

Blu-ray Review: The Return Of The Living Dead Collector’s Edition
It’s hard to believe that the same year George A. Romero released Day of the Dead, the ultra-gory, ultra-bleak conclusion of the trilogy he began with Night of the Living Dead in 1968, writer/director Dan O’Bannon was spinning Romero’s original classic into a totally new direction with The Return of the Living Dead. Whereas Romero’s film is dark and sober, Return is pure punk rock anarchy—a horror comedy that successfully manages to be equal parts horror and comedy while introducing one of the most significant elements into the zombie mythos since Romero first made them flesh-eaters 17 years earlier.

The film’s ingenious premise—which was “meta” before being meta was really a thing—is that the events of the original Night of the Living Dead really did take place and were covered up, with the zombies locked into airtight drums and left in the basement of a medical supply facility.

The Dead Lands | Review
Dead and Buried: Fraser’s Sumptuously Filmed, Familiar Revenge Drama

Premiering at the Toronto Film Festival and snagging the distinction of representing New Zealand as the official best foreign language selection in 2014, Toa Fraser’s The Dead Lands is the first film to be shot entirely in the Maori language and to be told entirely from their character perspective (and not in their relation to white characters). That the narrative is entirely derivative, and with a brutality that will put one, peripherally, in mind of Apocalypto (yes, that Mel Gibson about the Mayans) is sometimes easy to overlook considering the film’s vibrant palette. But as well intentioned as these honorable characterizations are intended in Glenn Strandring’s script, on film they are shapeless archetypes of good vs. evil in an endless cycle of violence brought to a wishful thinker’s fantastical resolution.

Wirepa (Te Kohe Tuhaka), the young leader of a bloodthirsty,...
