Joe Hale, who spent 35 years as an animator, layout artist and producer at Disney and received an Oscar nomination for his effects work on the 1979 film The Black Hole, has died. He was 99.
Hale died Jan. 29 of natural causes at his home in Atascadero, California, his wife of nearly 60 years, Beverly Hale, told The Hollywood Reporter.
Hale started out as an inbetweener on Alice in Wonderland (1951) and worked on such other classics as Peter Pan (1953), Lady and the Tramp (1955), Sleeping Beauty (1959), One Hundred and One Dalmatians (1961), Mary Poppins (1964), The Jungle Book (1967), The Fox and the Hound (1981), Bedknobs and Broomsticks (1971) and Pete’s Dragon (1977).
In 1980, Hale was named a first-time producer on The Black Cauldron (1985), a project that had been languishing at Disney for about seven years, and he oversaw a staff of 300 artists — including a young Tim Burton — and a big budget of $44 million.

Disney is in a remake mood, but there are a lot of lesser-known movies that should be redone instead of classics!
Fans will always grouse when it’s announced a remake or a reboot of a past movie is coming. Sure, now and then, a remake can work, but most fail to capture what made the original movie work so well.
Disney, of course, has been doing live-action remakes of their animated movies as well as looking at some past films. That includes Bryce Dallas Howard planning a remake of the cult 1986 movie The Flight of the Navigator.
But there’s a period that Disney should be exploring for any possible remakes: The Dark Age. This is the nickname for the period between 1970 and 1986 when Disney’s movie output wasn’t that great.
Many will note the animated films, yet the live-action ones were rough too. There were hits and...

Riverdale is known for being adventurous with its plots, and with seven seasons, there were countless plotlines. While many were loved for how simple but effective they were, like Jason Blossom's murder and The Black Hood's connection to Betty, some plotlines were not the same. In fact, Riverdale also had a habit of starting new stories and then leaving them hanging.
Either these wild and wonderful arcs would have unsatisfactory endings, which added no value to the plot, or they were dropped midway somewhere during the show. This left audiences scratching their heads about what was going on in the already convoluted show. In the end, the series spawned many narratives that didn't go anywhere.

As Halloween approaches, there's one Disney movie that, both as a film itself and its star, may well rank as the darkest film the company has ever produced!
Disney has always dabbled in dark stuff ever since the Evil Queen in Snow White and the Seven Dwarves. For a "family-friendly" company, they've dipped their toes into horror-themed storylines a lot. That was especially true in that late 1970s/early-80s period, when the company was trying to win over new fans and break out of that image.
That included darker fare like The Watcher in the Woods, The Black Hole, and Something Wicked This Way Comes. Yet one movie has to stand out as a film you cannot believe was ever made by Disney for its dark tones. As time has gone on, it's only become darker for shades the company couldn't possibly predict.
The Devil and Max Devlin.

Do you remember the first scary movie you watched? To be fair, mine was Halloween, so I got an early taste of R-rated terror. However, for many, it was something like The Monster Squad, The Watcher in the Woods, or perhaps The Gate. And now, we have a fun ride with the good and spooky natured, Monster Summer. Featuring Mel Gibson, Lorraine Bracco, and Mason Thames. For Mason, who was terrific in The Black Phone (and will soon be seen in The Black Phone 2), the actor proves that he is one to watch. The actor brings heart to his performance and shines opposite Gibson.
Recently, I sat down with the two, and the legendary Mel Gibson (who we previously interviewed Here), was full of praise for his younger co-star. Both actors work especially well together, and frankly, it’s not surprising that Thames is getting a ton of work on genre projects.

Paul Mazursky's 1986 comedy "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" is a sharp indictment of ultra-moneyed yuppie culture, which was running rampant during the Reagan administration. Culturally speaking, the mid 1980s saw a redoubled effort to enrich the already-wealthy and encourage rich people to become obsessed with conspicuous consumption. Many, many films and TV shows about Beverly Hills were released at this time, delving deep into the cockroach nest where America's wealthy classes gathered and cannibalized each other.
Prominent among these was Mazursky's film about a rich family, the Whitemans, that recently became wealthy thanks to a wire hanger manufacturing empire. The family are all empty and unhappy. Matriarch Barbara (Bette Midler) is attempting to fill her emptiness with increasingly strange renditions of New Age spirituality, while patriarch Dave (Richard Dreyfuss) is filling his own emptiness by having an affair with the family's live-in maid, Carmen (Elizabeth Peña). Something Wicked This Way Comes is a 41-year-old Disney horror movie that deserves more recognition. The movie, which is based on Ray Bradbury's 1962 novel of the same name, chronicles the adventures of two young boys after a creepy and mysterious circus appears in their sleepy town. The script of the unsettling film was penned by Bradbury himself, so there is not much difference between the movie and the novel apart from the scenes that were cut out as they were deemed too scary for a Disney movie.
The movie which is often underrated and forgotten was part of Disney's dark period. The production of Something Wicked This Way Comes was fraught with behind-the-scenes drama before it was released. Bradbury and director Jack Clayton had disagreements about the screenplay, which was changed during production despite Bradbury writing it. Despite the disagreements between the movie's creators, Something Wicked This Way Comes...

Disney delved into the horror genre in the 1980s due to a shift in audience preferences favoring high-stakes suspense. The Watcher in the Woods is a supernatural horror film featuring Bette Davis, aliens, ghosts, and the occult. After significant negative reactions, Disney made several changes to the film to fix the complicated ending, creating somewhat of a cult classic.
If you just so happened to watch any of the films Walt Disney Studios released in the 1980s, you could see that the subject matter and themes were, more often than not, a bit dark for the younger audience. Riverdale went from grounded storylines of family drama and murder mysteries to supernatural conflicts due to an explosion triggered by the vengeful Hiram Lodge. Season 6 introduced Rivervale, an alternate universe/timeline that led to the inclusion of superpowers and a final fight with a sorcerer and his dastardly comet. Season 7 flings the characters back in time to the 1950s, exploring themes of injustice and ending with a Riverdale watch party.
The epic highs and lows of high school football graced audiences' screens with Riverdale. Riverdale, a CW television show based on the Archie Comics, became a hit sensation in pop culture. The series featured Archie Andrews, Betty Cooper, Jughead Jones, and Veronica Lodge, high school friends banding together in unlikely circumstances. What started as a show centered around the murder of Jason Blossom quickly became a show riddled with conflicts involving gang members, cult leaders, and even the supernatural.

It feels like Nicholas Galitzine is everywhere these days. He clearly has a knack for playing royals — he starred as Prince Henry in Prime Video’s Red, White & Royal Blue in 2023 and is now making waves with his portrayal of George Villiers in Starz’s steamy historical drama Mary & George. Coupled with high-profile projects like The Idea of You on the horizon, the 29-year-old actor is well on his way to becoming Hollywood’s next “it” boy.
But before Galitzine was starring opposite Anne Hathaway, he got his start the way many rising actors do: on Lifetime. One of his earliest projects was Lifetime’s 2017 horror movie The Watcher in the Woods, where he played Marcus, a teenage boy who lives on a farm in a small Welsh village.

Screen legend Bette Davis led Disney’s valiant but flawed attempt at the horror genre. The Watcher in the Woods began development in the late-1970s after the rights were secured to Florence Engel Randall’s young adult novel. Turmoil plagued the filming process, with producers often intervening to tone down the movie, much to the frustrations of director John Hough. At the time, Hough was best known for the 1973 movie The Legend of Hell House, a haunted house horror certainly not for younger audiences. With Disney wanting to maintain their family-friendly approach, The Watcher in the Woods could not afford to go too dark. Nevertheless, there is an unsettling atmosphere to the film, and while there is no bad language, violence, or sexual content, it is chilling from the first minute. Hough uses nerve-shredding Pov shots to suggest a dangerous presence nearby with malignant intentions for the unsuspecting protagonists.

"Halloween Kills" might be one of the weaker installments in the long-running "Halloween" franchise, but one of its stars is anything but. The new book "Halloween: The Official Making of Halloween, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends" includes a whole bunch of great behind-the-scenes stories about the new trilogy's production, including one about "Halloween Kills" actor Kyle Richards. Richards, a former child actress who is perhaps now best known as a castmate on "The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills," played Michael Myers survivor Lindsey in the recent David Gordon Green movie (a role she originated in the 1978 classic), and apparently went above and beyond when it came to the film's stunt scenes.
In one scene, according to Abbie Bernstein's book, Richards was tasked with smacking the seemingly invincible killer known as The Shape with a sack of foam meant to be a stand-in for a bag of bricks. The foam...

"Five Nights At Freddy's" just premiered in theaters and on Peacock, and the adaptation of a much-loved horror video game is already garnering strong reactions from fans and critics alike. While some folks flocking to theaters have been waiting nearly a decade to see the animatronic antics of Freddy Fazbear and his murderous friends on screen, newcomers to the franchise are also getting the chance to see what the fuss (or should I say fuzz?) is all about.

Like so many before and after him, Frank Laloggia had a hard time when he first started out in the film business. Yet after booking several roles as an actor, the Rochester native seemed to finally catch his big break. He had been given the chance to write and direct a feature film. Unfortunately, Laloggia’s disillusionment with the industry set in while working on 1981’s Fear No Evil. Severe studio interference was the main cause of his disappointment, and as a result, Laloggia took an extended break from filmmaking. However, the time off between his debut and Lady in White proved to be beneficial; Laloggia returned from his long leave with what many regard as the best film of his career.

"Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark" might be the ideal stepping stone for younger horror fans not yet ready for the really intense stuff. The film came out in 2019, but it harkens back to creepy older family films like "The Watcher in the Woods" and "Return to Oz" -- that is, films that put their young protagonists in legitimately horrifying situations and left you wondering if they'd make it out okay. "Scary Stories" goes even further by having terrible things actually happen to its heroes. The only problem is it backtracks on this a little at the very end, tacking on a short epilogue that ties up some loose plot threads a little too neatly while also setting the stage for a sequel.
That's far from a dealbreaker, however, and general audiences were just as keen on the film as critics, with "Scary Stories" racking up $95.6 million at the...

For a few years there back in the early ’80s, Disney took a turn to the dark side, releasing live-action movies like “The Watcher in the Woods” (featuring a creepy late-career Bette Davis) and “Something Wicked This Way Comes” (from the mind of Ray Bradbury) that were intense enough to inspire nightmares — in kids, at least. The youngsters of that time are now parents, and some are surely asking themselves how far they can trust Disney not to traumatize another generation when a movie like “Haunted Mansion” comes along.
Truth be told, the PG-13-rated feature — which marks the studio’s second big-screen adaptation of its spooky theme park attraction — isn’t really that scary. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) leans more on comedy than horror, bringing together a handful of funny stars to deal with Gracey Manor’s ghost problem. Director Justin Simien (“Dear White People”) leans more on comedy than horror, bringing together a handful of funny stars to deal with Gracey Manor’s ghost problem. The result is certainly a lot less frightening...

At the end of the 70s and beginnings of the 80s, Disney decided to take a turn into a darker side of cinema, at least for them. In 1979 they released The Black Hole, a sci-fi epic which had among its cast Anthony Perkins, best known for Psycho as well as a space station manned by animated corpse/robot hybrids. The film would include an ending which would literally show the villain of the piece in hell in penance for his crimes for all eternity. The following year would be another creepy sci-fi entry The Watcher In The Woods.
Following these films would be the gory fantasy epic Dragonslayer. That film actually showed a real Disney Princess being eaten by blind baby dragons on camera. So to round out a really fantastic run of Dark movies the House of Mouse went all in with a fantasy film that covered themes of death,...

Is there something supernatural in the remote wilderness? Or was the most evil creature of them all man this whole time? It's possibly the biggest mystery "Yellowjackets" fans have been trying to unravel since season 1. We already know the show's protagonists will eventually commit horrendous acts in their efforts to survive being stranded in the great Canadian north as teenagers. But is there also an entity in the wild egging them on? Perhaps, though it's pretty clear by now the members of Wiskayok High School's 1996 girls' soccer team are more than capable of breaking bad by themselves.
With season 2 right around the corner (read /Film's review here), co-showrunner Jonathan Lisco spoke to SFX Magazine about all those fan theories regarding that enigmatic sigil that keeps popping up on the series. If there is a sinister presence out there in the wilderness — something Lisco was very careful to avoid either confirming...

Potential spoilers for "The Watcher" follow.
Between "Dahmer" and "The Watcher," Netflix's recent wave of true crime shows are getting a lot of attention. After all, there's just something deeply chilling about watching real-life cases play out. As someone who has zero tolerance for horror and still remembers being terrified when a middle school teacher forced my class to watch Disney's "The Watcher in the Woods" (I probably spent half the movie hiding in the bathroom — so much for movies in class being fun), true crime brings its own unnerving addition: the knowledge that the events on-screen could happen to just about anyone.
But while the Jeffrey Dahmer murders have been recounted time and time again, "The Watcher" is based on a relatively unknown case: the stalking and harassment of the Broaddus family (renamed Brannock in the show). Not only does the unfamiliarity bring a new level of discomfort,...

“This movie was developed for a while. We actually were going to shoot it during the Covid lockdown,” reveals Melissa Joan Hart, the executive producer of “Christmas in Tune” for Lifetime starring Reba McEntire. “We put it off because we wanted to be able to have big audiences and do it right. We didn’t rush it. In the meantime, we were able to get Reba to be interested in it and developed it more for her.” We talked to Hart as part of our “Meet the Experts” TV showrunners panel. “Sometimes there seems to be something out there. Sometimes I hear someone whispering in the wind.”
If you’ve listened to Daily Dead’s Corpse Club podcast, then you might know that half the time I open my mouth, it’s to talk about Disney Channel Original Movies (no matter what the topic of the episode is). I’ve always found great delight in how movies released on the family-friendly network can still retain nightmare-inducing thrills and chills, whether it be through a theater of frozen bodies in Halloweentown or the sharp-toothed imaginary friend in Don’t Look Under the Bed.
While the DCOMs have had their macabre moments, the truth is that previous generations of viewers got to experience an even more spooky side of Disney on the big screen. In the cinematic world following the release of John Carpenter’s Halloween, Walt Disney Productions wasn’t holding back when...

Exclusive: Word is getting around that British actor Nicholas Galitzine has won the role of Prince Robert in Sony’s upcoming Camila Cabello musical Cinderella.
After a long search, Galitzine, I hear, wowed the filmmakers in many chemistry readings. In addition to Cabello, the actor joins Idina Menzel and Billy Porter (as the fairy godmother) in the Kay Cannon-directed and scripted feature. James Corden produces and has a story by credit. A production start is scheduled for February for a Feb. 5, 2021 release.
Galitzine’s first big film break came at the age of 20 about five years ago when he scored a role opposite Luke Perry in John Williams’ The Beat Beneath My Feet which played the Berlinale in 2015. In that movie Galitzine played Tom, a teenage loner who discovers his rock god neighbor has faked his death over tax fraud and blackmails him into becoming his guitar teacher.
