The bike in the film was a true one off and was built by a gentleman called Barry Hart in his company Barton Motors based in North Wales. The bike was designed and built in just 12 weeks and had to qualify for the race used in filming which was remarkable considering it new and unproven!
When Network released the film on DVD in the UK, in the late 2010s, the downbeat ending version was the default, with the upbeat "happy" ending offered in the Bonus Features.
The bike featured in the crash scene at the end of the movie was actually a Yamaha 250 GP bike dressed up to look like the 500cc Silver Dream Racer.
David Essex was only insured to ride the motorcycle up to 15 MPH. Motorcycle racer Roger Marshall was used to double for Essex for the race scenes.
