Nyx UK Gets Monstrous with April’s Horror Line-Up
Image
This April, Nyx UK is giving horror fans a reason to stay in after dark. The genre-dedicated channel is marking the birthdays of two titans of terror – Lon Chaney and Lamberto Bava – with curated tributes, while also serving up a fresh wave of cult classics, lost gems, and international oddities that promise to satisfy even the most seasoned horror viewer.

On Tuesday 1st April, Nyx pays homage to the incomparable Lon Chaney, the master of silent horror and transformative performances. Known as the “Man of a Thousand Faces,” Chaney’s legacy is explored through a special double bill. At 9pm, Tod Browning’s The Unknown (1927) sees Chaney as an armless circus performer in love with a woman terrified of touch, one of his most twisted and physically demanding roles. That’s followed at 10:15pm by The Hunchback of Notre Dame (1923), with Chaney delivering a deeply affecting take on the tragic figure of Quasimodo.

Blood, Gore, and Cult Classics – Nyx UK’s March Schedule
Image
Horror streaming channel Nyx UK is set to deliver a packed month of blood-curdling delights this March, including a tribute to the legendary David Cronenberg, a chilling nod to Nosferatu’s 102nd anniversary, and a slate of UK TV premieres. From real-life horrors to cult classics, the channel is gearing up for a month of terror that celebrates both established legends and emerging talent in the genre.

Marking International Women’s Day on March 8, Nyx UK will present the channel premiere of Devanny Pinn’s The Black Mass at 9pm, a harrowing look at the 1978 sorority house attacks committed by Ted Bundy. Pinn’s take on the case shifts the perspective away from the killer, instead focusing on the victims and their horrific ordeal. Following this, at 10:45pm, Nyx will air Luna Wolf’s short film Siren, a psychological horror piece exploring identity and trauma through an unnerving and deeply personal lens.

La Nuit du maléfice (1971)
Top 10 ‘A Ghost Story for Christmas’ Films
La Nuit du maléfice (1971)
The 1960s and ‘70s saw British cinema become increasingly interested in rural landscapes. Horror films, in particular, set their stories within isolated countryside settings or claustrophobic villages, environments cut off from social norms where eccentricity and moral decay can become more pronounced. This trend is perhaps best exemplified by three films commonly referred to as ‘The Unholy Trilogy’: “The Witchfinder General” (1968), “The Blood on Satan’s Claw” (1971), and “The Wicker Man” (1974). All three of these films explore the breakdown of morality in isolated rural spaces, where societal norms are distant or non-existent.

Building on the success of the BBC’s Omnibus series, which included the highly regarded “Whistle and I’ll Come to You” (1968), the BBC launched “A Ghost Story for Christmas,” an anthology series that aired a film every year between 1971 and 1978. These films, which were often adapted from M.R. James’ short stories, revived a kind of Dickensian tradition...

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Image
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.

Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

Stephen King Shares Rave Review Of A Divisive Margot Robbie & Brad Pitt Movie
Image
Where to Watch Powered by Stephen King calls Babylon utterly brilliant, extravagant, over the top, hilarious, and thought-provoking, despite the film's polarized reception. King suggests that Babylon might be considered a classic in the future, even though it was a box office flop and received minimal Oscar recognition. Although primarily known for horror, King has a diverse taste in films and has recommended a range of genres, including dramas, thrillers, and even a lighthearted musical like Billy Elliot.

Acclaimed horror author Stephen King has high praise for Babylon, a black comedy starring Margot Robbie and Brad Pitt that divided audiences and critics. Babylon premiered in 2022 and explores the depravity of early Hollywood, as several stars of the 1920s see their careers change drastically during the film industry's shift from the silent film era to sound. It sparked a very polarized response from critics. Some applauded Babylon's ambition, glamour, performances,...

Screambox Hidden Gems – 5 Horror Movies You Should Stream This Summer
Image
The Bloody Disgusting-powered Screambox is home to a variety of unique horror content, from originals and exclusives to cult classics and documentaries. With such a rapidly-growing library, there are many hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Here are five recommendations you can stream on Screambox right now.

Night of the Demon

Not to be confused with the 1957 film of the same name (also on Screambox), 1980’s Night of the Demon is an unforgettable Bigfoot experience. It’s no surprise that the gory exploitation flick was prosecuted as a “video nasty” by the British Board of Film Classification upon its initial release. It’s best remembered for a scene in which Bigfoot rips off a guy’s manhood — and that’s not even the most outrageous death scene!

The cheesefest plays like an early slasher, but instead of a masked killer lurking in the woods, it’s a guy in a cheap gorilla costume.

After making The Third Saturday in October Part V, the fifth entry in a non-existent series, what do you do for a follow-up? If you’re writer/director Jay Burleson you make The Third Saturday in October and give your faux franchise a starting point.

The 10 Best Bigfoot Movies Ranked
Image
The best Bigfoot movies are about as elusive as the creature himself. Despite Hollywood's love for making films about ghosts, man-eating animals, ogres, and dragons, the industry has seemingly snubbed the mythical giant ape some call Sasquatch. But despite Tinsel Town's lack of love for the big guy, there have been some pretty interesting, unique, and downright scary Bigfoot movies, that, while not appealing to mainstream audiences, have been hits with genre fans. While there were movies about all the other horror monsters through the years, the first Bigfoot movie didn't even arrive until 1970.

This is despite the creature getting its first mention all the way back in the 1700s when stories of hairy creatures in the forests would scream loudly and steal livestock. This led to stories of shape-shifting creatures, adding a supernatural tint to the idea of the Bigfoot monsters. By the 1800s, there were stories in different parts of the world,...

‘Countdown’ Film Review: Killer-Phone-App Horror Film Embraces Its Own Absurdity
Justin Dec in Countdown (2019)
It takes almost half the film to figure out if Justin Dec’s directorial debut, “Countdown,” is seriously being serious. The film aspires to belong in the small but noteworthy horror subgenre about killer curses, right alongside Jacques Tourneur’s “Night of the Demon” and Sam Raimi’s “Drag Me To Hell,” but this time it’s about a killer cell phone app. Yes, really.

The titular “Countdown” app is very simple: you download it to your phone, and it gives you a countdown that reveals when you’re going to die. Most people find out they’ve got decades left to live and go on about their days. But some people find out they’ve only got a few days, or even hours, so they freak out and try to change their destiny.

That’s when the demons come after you — when nobody’s looking, of course, and only in spooky hallways and bathrooms.

Stephen King Reveals His 22 Favorite Movies Of All Time
If any author to have existed within our lifetime can lay claim to having a fair amount of their work adapted to cinema, it’s most definitely Stephen King. Granted, his books are amazing in their own right, but there’s something doubly cool about seeing them brought to life.

Of course, Mr. King is just like the rest of us when you get down to it, as he does enjoy taking in a good movie when he has the free time to spare. And when it comes to a mind such as his, it’s expected that folks be curious to learn which flicks he digs most.

Believe it or not, no less than 22 recommendations have been given by the legendary scribe in recent interviews. So without further ado, here they are:

The Autopsy of Jane Doe – André Øvredal, 2016

The Blair Witch Project – Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sánchez, 1999

Peggy Cummins, Gun Crazy's iconic femme fatale, dies aged 92
Irish actor Cummins never quite conquered Hollywood but she made her mark in the 1950 film noir classic, as well as cult horror Night of the Demon

Irish actor Peggy Cummins, who left her mark as the brazen femme fatale in the film noir Gun Crazy, has died aged 92, having suffered a stroke. She died in a London hospital on 29 December, surrounded by family, her friend Dee Kirkwood told the Hollywood Reporter.

Cummins, who was born in Prestatyn, Wales, began acting as a child, having been spotted at a tram stop in Dublin by a theatre owner. She made her debut on the London stage aged 13. After a stint in British cinema, in 1945 she went to Hollywood, where Darryl F Zanuck, head of 20th Century Fox, cast her as the lead in Otto Preminger’s Forever Amber. “Fox made a big splash for me when I came over. I weighed 98 pounds and had an 18-inch waist,...

The Importance of Cats in Horror Cinema
Mark Harrison Oct 31, 2018

Want to enhance your horror movie? Make sure you sign up a cat...

This article comes from Den of Geek UK.

This feature contains broad spoilers for several horror movies featuring cats, including Alien, Cat People, Drag Me To Hell, Fallen, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night, Pet Sematary and The Voices.

The relationship between humans and cats over time has given way to a number of cultural impressions and outright superstitions. Ancient Egyptians associated them with gods. In the Middle Ages, they were linked with witches and killed en masse, which probably hastened the spread of the Black Plague through the rodent population. And in the modern day, it's interchangeably lucky or not if a black cat crosses your path.

Like anything with such a wide array of symbolic links, movies have presented cats as characters in different ways over the years. It's their abiding...

Retrospective: 1980's Slice of Sasquatchploitation - Night of the Demon
Every time a new Bigfoot hoax makes headlines, I do the Hammer Dance on my front porch then call everyone I know before it’s debunked. Yet each time I revisit Night of the Demon, my busting lust for sharing a world with Sasquatch withers like a raisin and dies crying. If this is how a Bigfoot will behave if and when one of us finally crosses its path, then I’ll have a lot of explaining to do for the firm Pro-Foot stance I’ve maintained over the years.

Indeed, we’re not discussing the beloved 1957 Night of the Demon which was about an actual demon. Today, we’re examining the rabid Bigfoot-Rape film from 1980 that was wicked enough to join the ranks of the other persecuted titles on the Video Nasties list. Now that we understand each other, feel free to jump out or come along – you won’t be judged.
