The Movie That Introduced the World to Fast Zombies Before 28 Days Later
Image
When 28 Days Later hit theaters in 2002, it instantly became a favorite among horror fans, who were enthralled with the film's fast-paced action and zombies that attacked with break-neck speed. With its themes of infection and subversive political commentary, 28 Days Later has received praise from critics and fans alike as a film that shifted the paradigm and brought the zombie film back to life. However, long before 28 Days Later, Nightmare City, released in 1980 and directed by Umberto Lenzi, amped up the speed and savagery of the zombie film while also establishing a commentary on the escalation of the nuclear arms race.

The films of Umberto Lenzi exist in multiple subgenres. In Cannibal Ferox and Eaten Alive!, Lenzi took the savagery and brutality of the Amazon cannibal film to new heights, a subgenre he had helped start with Man from Deep River in 1972. His giallo films, Seven Bloodstained Orchids,...

How MaXXXine Explores The Real Life Relationship Between Horror And Adult Films
Image
When the world was first introduced to Maxine Minx (Mia Goth), she was a budding adult film starlet traveling with her crew to Texas to appear in the film "The Farmer's Daughter." She tells her boyfriend/film producer Wayne that she wants the whole world to know her name, "like Lynda Carter or some s**t." He tells her that the whole world will lust after her because she's "got that X-factor." She has dreams of being a star with her name in lights, and she'll do whatever it takes to get to the top. This film was supposed to be her ticket to superstardom, but after the events of the Texas Porn Star Murders, Maxine Minx escaped as the sole survivor and had to start again in the City of Angels.

Six years after the events of "X," Maxine Minx returns in "MaXXXine," (read our review here) which sees...

November 30th Genre Releases Include Raiders Of Atlantis (Blu-ray), Saint Maud (Blu-ray / DVD), Malignant (Blu-ray / DVD)
Image
Hello, everyone! As we get ready to head into December, we have one last round of home media releases for this month on tap first. If you haven’t had a chance to check out James Wan’s Malignant yet, Warner Bros. is releasing it on both Blu-ray and DVD, and A24 is finally bringing Saint Maud home this Tuesday, too. Both Summer of 84 and Ticks are getting the 4K treatment, and Severin Films is showing some love to Ruggero Deodato’s Raiders of Atlantis as well.

Other titles being released on November 30th include Wild Indian and The Last Matinee.

Malignant

“Malignant” marks director James Wan’s return to his roots with this new original horror thriller. In the film, a woman is paralyzed by shocking visions of grisly murders, and her torment worsens as she discovers that these waking dreams are in fact terrifying realities.

The Deuce Notebook: The Samurai Cinema Slaughter of ‘74
Image
Illustration by Jeff CashvanMovie-lovers!Welcome back to The Deuce Notebook, a collaboration between Mubi Notebook and The Deuce Film Series, our monthly event at Nitehawk Williamsburg that excavates the facts and fantasies of cinema's most infamous block in the world: 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. For each screening, my co-hosts and I pick a title that we think embodies the era of 24-hour theater hopping, and present the venue at which it premiered...Since we began in 2012, we’ve had the extreme pleasure of inviting the occasional guest curator to take over for the night with a title of their choosing… Our friend Chris Poggiali of Temple of Schlock fame has been an annual visitor, and this month Chris has contributed to our column with a fabulous piece about Japanese samurai films and their entry into the US mainstream.Chris is an authority on genre films and theatrical distribution history,...

The Funhouse: One of the 80s Most Unsung Horror Delights
Image
In 1974, Tobe Hooper made an eruption of horror ingenuity with his second feature film, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, a gritty and grainy horror classic that would prove to be one of the most influential films in horror history. A brilliantly brutal, thoroughly disturbing, and strangely real-feeling slasher before slashers that favored hellish atmosphere over blood yet still feels like peak cinematic violence,Texas Chainsaw Massacre expressed Hooper was already a developing master of depicting terror on screen.

As many know, he went on to make a few genre classics and cult hits, including Poltergeist, Lifeforce, and Salem's Lot. Hooper's responsible for at least 2 of horror's greatest films of all time as well as a sprinkling of lesser hits, but more gems rest between the cracks than some care to recognize.

Two years after Texas Chainsaw Massacre initially made its impact, Hooper directed Eaten Alive, a strange, sordid exploitation flick about...

Eleven Heroic Hunks Who Can Save The World For Us Any Day!
The new J.J. Abrams film Super 8 opens this week, and it stars Kyle Chandler as a small town sheriff who has to cope with mysterious happenings and inexplicable events that could foretell an alien invasion, or worse ... the end of the world.

That got us thinking about other apocalyptic heroes throughout the years, and how their glowing hotness was used as a beacon to help guide us through to safety.

Or was the last thing we saw before the world ended.

Either way, we're glad these guys were on our side, and present this tribute to the Hunks of the Apocalypse!

Note - You may be wondering why two of the most popular end-of-the-world films, Armageddon and War of the Worlds are not included.

Well, Armageddon sucks. And after watching that scene where Ben Affleck rolls animal crackers on Liv Tyler's naked stomach while "I Don't Want To...

Hungry For Flesh? Top 10 Third World Cannibal Films!
During this month of ghosts, werewolves, vampires, and zombies, it is important to remember that there are other sub-genres of horror films that still make essential viewing. Unbeknownst to a lot of horror fans, there was once a style of film made mostly in Italy during the Seventies and Eighties known as The Third World Cannibal Film, or simply The Cannibal Film genre.

These films gained a certain notoriety for their savage imagery (most notably the onscreen killing of animals) and brutal conventions (predominantly white people being set upon by primitive tribes and being summarily eaten). Due to this, a lot of otherwise intrepid horror audiences shied away from this sub-genre, thinking the filmmakers “out of their minds.” When certain governments caught wind of what was going on, these films soon found their way onto banned lists. Despite the efforts of “morality watchdogs,” the movies are just as much a...
