Thanks to a fluke in Night of the Living Dead’s original copyright notice, the modern concept of “zombies” has been in the public domain since the release of Romero’s masterpiece back in 1968. That’s why it’s no surprise that so many filmmakers have gone on to reappropriate and update these undead flesh-eaters for new audiences, often changing their mythology and behavior in order to better suit their respective stories.
Naturally, some takes on these shambling corpses are stranger than others, and that’s why we’ve decided to compile a list celebrating six of the weirdest zombies in horror movies. After all, when it comes to breaking the rules, no one does it better than the horror genre!
Before we begin, I think it’s worth noting that we’ll defining “zombie” as any form of cannibalistic ghoul derived from an infectious outbreak – so there’s no...

After spending some time in “streaming hell,” the 2002 horror film by Danny Boyle, 28 Days Later, will finally land on digital platforms soon. This move is simultaneous with the release of the trailer for 28 Years Later, the third part of the franchise that’s set to be released next year. However, the second part of the franchise, 28 Weeks Later, is leaving Hulu on December 31.
You read that right. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo’s bombastic sequel starring MCU regular Jeremy Renner, is leaving streaming platform Hulu in a couple of weeks, making the franchise’s streaming situation a bit more complicated. In case you’re a physical media enthusiast, and you bought copies of the first two films, you’re probably laughing at everyone and rightfully so.
28 Weeks Later is kind of a twist on the original concept. Danny Boyle decided to pass directing duties to a relatively unknown Spanish director and Alex Garland,...

Sony knows you're craving a great zombie movie. In fact, it knows exactly which zombie film you want to see. Following the release of the first trailer for 28 Years Later, Sony have announced that Danny Boyle's first foray into flesh-ripping zombies is finally coming to digital platforms. First released in 2002, 28 Days Later starred Cillian Murphy as Jim, who woke up from a 28-day-long coma, to find London had been overrun by zombies. The film still stands as one of the greatest modern zombie movies ever made, introducing audiences to the terrifying Rage Zombies, who sprint towards their victims at full pelt. For years, audiences have been desperate to enjoy the horrific mutilation from the comfort of their own homes. While 28 Days Later had been kept from streaming, it's finally arriving on digital platforms.
Sony announced that 28 Days Later is heading to streaming via a page on their official website.

When 28 Days Later hit theaters in 2002, it instantly became a favorite among horror fans, who were enthralled with the film's fast-paced action and zombies that attacked with break-neck speed. With its themes of infection and subversive political commentary, 28 Days Later has received praise from critics and fans alike as a film that shifted the paradigm and brought the zombie film back to life. However, long before 28 Days Later, Nightmare City, released in 1980 and directed by Umberto Lenzi, amped up the speed and savagery of the zombie film while also establishing a commentary on the escalation of the nuclear arms race.
The films of Umberto Lenzi exist in multiple subgenres. In Cannibal Ferox and Eaten Alive!, Lenzi took the savagery and brutality of the Amazon cannibal film to new heights, a subgenre he had helped start with Man from Deep River in 1972. His giallo films, Seven Bloodstained Orchids,...

It takes a certain amount of ambition to remake a film from a director whose contributions are highly regarded among many. In 2004, Zack Snyder set out to do this with a remake of Dawn of the Dead. George Romeros 1978 film, a follow-up to 1968s Night of the Living Dead, is considered by many to be the zenith of whats sometimes referred to as the zombie apocalypse genre. Snyder certainly had his work cut out for him. Romero, who had written Dawn of the Dead alongside Italian horror maestro Dario Argento, brought zombies to the forefront in a commentary on consumerism.
What audiences got in 2004 was a film that was fast-paced with plenty of audacious gore effects and action sequences that provided a roller-coaster ride of entertainment. Praised by many critics and audiences, Snyders 2004 remake didnt once let up on the gas when it came to providing an unmitigated frenzy of...

Studiocanal presents two brand-new restorations of two superb thrillers from legendary director Alberto De Martino – the 1974 Italian exorcist film The Antichrist, a superbly sleazy and unsettling shocker, featuring an amazing score by Ennio Morricone, starring Carla Gravina (Madame Bovary), Mel Ferrer (Nightmare City) and Oscar nominee Arthur Kennedy (Champion); and the 1976 cop thriller Blazing Magnum (aka Shadows in an Empty Room), an outrageous action-packed B-movie riff on Dirty Harry, starring Oscar nominee Stuart Whitman (The Mark), John Saxon (A Nightmare on Elm Street), Tisa Farrow (The Last Hunter) and Oscar winner Martin Landau (North by Northwest), with, according to film historian Kim Newman, epic car chases that rival Steve McQueen’s Bullitt.
Both titles include brand-new audio interviews with Alberto De Martino on the films, as well as commentaries, interviews, trailers and art cards. These immaculate restorations, making their UK Blu-ray debuts, are a must-own for fans of Italian action and horror cinema,...

Seaman’s sequel to 2016’s The Barn has finally arrived after a run of festival screenings and some limited theatrical showings. The question is, as with any long-delayed sequel, can it recapture what made the original so popular?
It certainly gets off on the right foot as Troop Leader Plums and his scouts sitting around the campfire fill the viewer in on the basic plot of the original as well as a few things we’ll need to know for the sequel, before finding out the hard way the stories were all true.

The upcoming English-language remake of Yeon Sang-ho's zombie banger "Train to Busan" is picking up speed. The 2016 original feature concerns a viral undead outbreak in Seoul and an intense fight for survival aboard a train of unassuming passengers. It made moviegoers scream and cry, so much so that it spawned an animated prequel and a standalone follow-up. Now, an overseas translation of the story situates the outbreak around one of the most populated cities in the United States (considering the recent massive...

Oh, here’s another reason to love Italian cinema: they will jump on a known property faster than you can say The Asylum. But I’m talking less about the new, self-conscious models of mockery and more of the Use the Name, a Setting, and a Character school of “flattery”. For instance Patrick Still Lives (1980), the unofficial sequel to Patrick (1978), the surprise Australian hit, isn’t even a sequel but rather a reboot: same premise, similar setting, same name. All the boxes are checked for my kind of flick, and it has the added bonus of being rung through the Italian filter to end up in a place far removed (yet equally as entertaining) from the original. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
Patrick Still Lives (Aka Patrick vive ancora) opened in Italy in May; Wikipedia (that beacon of true report) notes that “It is known primarily for...

Happy 2021, everyone! It’s been a few weeks, but we’re back with a brand-new edition of our weekly Blu-ray and DVD releases column to kick off this new year. And while we may not have a ton of titles headed home on Tuesday, we do have an excellent bunch of films all the same, including one of my favorite films of 2020, Love and Monsters, which hits various formats this week. Another film from last year that I really enjoyed was Brea Grant’s 12 Hour Shift, which hits both Blu-ray and DVD (and will be available On Demand) tomorrow, and if you have somehow never seen it, I highly recommend picking up the new Blu for Savage Streets, featuring Linda Blair.
Other releases for January 5th include Tintorera… Tiger Shark, From the Depths, Nina of the Woods, and Hacksaw.

While the math is way off – there’s no more than one hundred, tops – The Night of a Thousand Cats (1972) offers 63 minutes (!) of outlandish fun, decadent behavior, and a proclivity towards the absurd. Just don’t expect a story from this Mexican release; it seems around thirty minutes were cut for the North American release, leaving behind a mess of the rest that is nevertheless very entertaining.
Released in Mexico in early August, Cats didn’t arrive stateside until November of ’74, where it came and went pretty quickly. Reviews were…well, what do you think? There still really hasn’t been a reconsideration of the film all these years later; it remains hanging out just below the surface of modern horror culture.
And by hanging out I mean mostly hiding from shame; Night has a couple moments where cats appear to be mishandled, and I’m pretty sure there weren...

When it comes to releasing unique and collectible Blu-ray box sets (such as their Al Adamson: The Masterpiece Collection), Severin Films has done an amazing job preserving horror history, and this summer they'll continue to do so with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, featuring Umberto Lenzi's collaborations with Carroll Baker:
"On June 30th, Severin Films is bringing together the complete collaborative works of two cult film legends with The Complete Lenzi Baker Giallo Collection, which includes superlative editions of Orgasmo, So Sweet… So Perverse, A Quiet Place To Kill, and Knife Of Ice.
Italian writer/director Umberto Lenzi helmed popular peplums, created extreme poliziotteschi, and invented the Italian cannibal phenomenon. Hollywood actress Carroll Baker was the Golden Globe® winning/Academy Award® nominated star of Baby Doll, Giant and The Carpetbaggers. Together in the late ‘60s/early ‘70s, they made four landmark films that changed the erotic thriller and giallo genres forever.

It is truly amazing how crowded the zombie market was in the early ‘80s, at least in Europe; after the success of George Romero’s Dawn of the Dead (1978) begat Lucio Fulci’s unofficial “sequel” Zombie (’79), the floodgates were opened and the undead made their (slow and shuffling) move at the box office. Amidst the barrage was one Burial Ground (1981), a film that boils down a zombie flick to its very essence: people get munched, and they get munched good. Forget social subtext; Burial Ground barely has text.
Aka The Night of Terrors, Burial Ground was released on its home turf of Italy in the summer, with the U.S. not receiving a release until late ’85 before dropping on video in early ’86. There’s really no need to mention reviews from the mainstream: what do you think they would say that would in any way add to the discourse beyond...

To celebrate the release of The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire – available on Blu-ray today from Arrow Video – we’re giving away a Blu-ray and the official soundtrack on limited edition 12″ vinyl!
One of several ‘animal-in-the-title’ cash-ins released in the wake of Dario Argento’s box-office smash The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, The Iguana with the Tongue of Fire is a gloriously excessive giallo that boasts a rogues gallery of perverse characters; violent, fetishized murders, and one of the genre’s most nonsensical, red-herring laden plots (which sees almost every incidental character hinted at potentially being the killer).

Saban Films has just unleashed the trailer and the poster for Dolph Lundgren shoots thousands of zombies in the undead face flick Dead Trigger. The zombie-action motion picture will be receiving a theatrical and VOD release this May and begins when a mysterious virus kills billions and turns many others into bloodthirsty zombies. From there it's up to once upon a time Frank Castle himself, Captain Walker (Lundgren) to lead an elite team to destroy these undead freaks and save the world.
For those of you out there that might not know, Dead Trigger is based on a zombie-themed first-person survival horror mobile game of the same name developed and first published by Madfinger Games in June 2012 for iOS and Android mobile devices. The game is single-player only. Dead Trigger has over 23 million downloads, on all platforms, and a sequel, fittingly called Dead Trigger 2, was released in 2013. The first-person shooter...

After George Romero’s remarkable international success with Dawn of the Dead (entitled Zombi in Italy), the Italians, always ready to hop on the celluloid bandwagon, rushed to churn out tons of unofficial sequels to the film as well as their own originals, just so long as “zombie,” “living dead,” or something similar was featured in the title. Thus, we have films such as Hell of the Living Dead, Burial Ground, and Zombi Holocaust, as well as the “sort-of” zombie film, Nightmare City, along with many others. But the first of the zombie films to hit theaters after Dawn of the Dead was Zombie.
Though the title certainly was a blatant ploy to ride the coattails of Dawn of the Dead, director Lucio Fulci always chafed at the notion the film itself was a rip-off of Romero’s smash hit. I won’t go into the arguments here because frankly,...

The Fifth Cord will be available on Blu-ray February 5th From Arrow Video
The success of Dario Argento s The Bird with the Crystal Plumage ushered in a host of imitators, seeking to capitalize on this new, modern take on the giallo thriller. Many were highly derivative, but a number nonetheless rose above the crowd thanks to skillful execution and a willingness to experiment stylistically. Once such example is The Fifth Cord ¬ which, in the hands of director Luigi Bazzoni, turns a conventional premise into a visually stunning exploration of alienation and isolation.
When a man barely survives a brutal assault en route home from a New Year s party, washed-up, whisky-swilling journalist Andrea Bild is assigned to report on the case. Before long, the maniac strikes again, this time with fatal results. As the body count rises, Andrea falls under suspicion himself, making it even more imperative that he crack the case.

Whether he was telling stories of the living dead, the supernatural, or human monsters, filmmaker Umberto Lenzi always found a way to draw you in with his genuine enthusiasm behind the lens and a pure passion for cinema that was evident in his work. It is with great sadness, then, that we share the news of Lenzi's passing at the age of 86.
According to multiple sources, including ISTOÉ, report that Lenzi passed away at a hospital in Rome. The specific reason for his passing has not yet been shared with the public.
Lenzi's prolific career as a writer/director spanned five decades, beginning with 1958's An Italian in Greece and concluding with 1992's Mean Tricks. With a career that was truly eclectic, Lenzi made movies for a wide range of sub-genres. He took viewers into the Bond-esque world of espionage with Super Seven Calling Cairo and The Spy Who Loved Flowers,...

Sergio Martino was a journeyman Italian director who averaged around three films a year into the early nineties and who worked in many different genres including documentaries (Naked and Violent), spaghetti westerns (A Man Called Blade), poliziotteschi (The Violent Professionals), sex comedies (Sex with a Smile), and action films (The Great Alligator; Slave of the Cannibal God; 2019: After the Fall of New York). But this blue-collar filmmaker is arguably most famous for his early seventies gialli such as The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, The Case of the Scorpion’s Tail, All the Colors of the Dark, Your Vice is a Locked Room and Only I Have the Key, and Torso. Each of these gialli films are–rightly so–considered genuine classics of the genre and fans of these films each have their favorite Sergio Martino giallo. However, his final giallo of this period (he...

Sergio Martino’s The Suspicious Death Of A Minor (1975) will be available on Blu-ray September 26th from Arrow Video
In the wake of the success of Dario Argento’s ground-breaking giallo The Bird with the Crystal Plumage, numerous other directors stepped forward to try their hand at these lurid murder-mysteries. At the forefront was Sergio Martino (The Strange Vice of Mrs. Wardh, Torso), whose sensual 70s thrillers starring Edwige Fenech and George Hilton are widely celebrated as some of the best the genre has to offer. The final of Martino’s six gialli, The Suspicious Death of a Minor combines conventional giallo trappings with elements of the then flourishing ‘poliziotteschi’ crime thrillers. Claudio Cassinelli (What Have They Done to Your Daughters?) stars as undercover cop Paolo Germi, on the trail of a Milanese criminal outfit following the brutal murder of an underage prostitute. But a killer-for-hire is also on the prowl,...

For me, the most interesting thing about horror maestro Tobe Hooper’s storied career is he takes chances. He always swings big; from his landmark second feature The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (1974), to Lifeforce (1985), to even The Mangler (1995), he pushes the genre into the absurd through concept and execution, audiences be damned. It’s an admirable trait in a filmmaker, and one that’s on full display with Eaten Alive (1976), probably his most bizarre film to date. (Which is saying a lot.)
After a limited stateside release in October of ’76, EA was given a wide release in May of ’77 by Virgo International Pictures to theatres and drive-ins across the land. The start of the ever undulating arc of Hooper’s career, it was met with a resounding “Whaaaat?” by the public and critics alike. This was not the follow up to the cultural explosion that was Chainsaw people were expecting. And to be honest,...

Do you have a recurring nightmare? Mine is the oh-so passé “being chased”. It’s always the same; hunted relentlessly by an unknown assailant, helplessly fleeing from a certain doom. Of course, I wake up in a puddle of sweat, crying out for mommy, as one will do. The fear of cutthroat pursuit is at the center of Nightmare City (1980), Umberto Lenzi’s take on the then resurgent zombie sub-genre. And while you won’t wake up screaming after seeing it, you might end up covered in a sticky sweet glaze of Wtf. The Italians don’t make their horror in half measures; I’m pretty sure Nightmare City throws in the whole cup.
I should say, Italian/Spanish/Mexican. This co-co-production was released in Italy in December, toured around Europe for a couple of years, and then landed on North American soil late ’83 under the title City of the Walking Dead,...

For his sole cinematic work of the past three decades, godfather Of Mondo Franco E. Prosperi (co-creator of Mondo Cane and Goodbye Uncle Tom) took on the ‘Nature Strikes Back’ genre and delivered perhaps the most shocking movie of his controversial career… Wild Beasts.
When Pcp gets into the water supply of a city zoo, the drug-crazed beasts – including tigers, lions, cheetahs, hyenas and elephants, as well as seeing eye dogs and sewer rats – go berserk and rampage through the streets of Rome.
What follows is a terrifying mix of actual animal attacks (supervised by professional circus trainers) and over-the- top ‘80s Italian gore that remains the greatest eco-revenge shocker in EuroCult history. Lorraine De Selle (Cannibal Ferox, House at the Edge of the Park) and Ugo Bologna (Nightmare City) star in this disturbing urban bloodbath, now digitally remastered for the first time ever and bursting with all-new special features,...

Tucker & Dale, Sightseers, Grabbers and more, as we highlight 21 horror-comedies well worth your time...
Hey y’all! I’m back to-
“Shaun Of The Dead!” someone shouts.
Alright, alright, settle down now. Settle down. I’ve got something to tell you. A lot of you know what I’m about to say. Some of you might sense what’s coming. Regardless, let’s all take a knee.
Deep breath in.
Deep breath out.
Okay.
…Shaun Of The Dead is almost 12 years old.
I know. It hurts. We’re super old and it’s a problem. Kids who were born the day Shaun came out are in secondary school. They’ve probably hit puberty. They’re feeling weird feelings about each other that they can’t explain. Their parents are probably starting to piss them off. Their parents who are probably us. We could be the parents of...

The Beast
• Release Date: Available Now on Blu-ray
• Written By: Walerian Borowczyk
• Directed By: Walerian Borowczyk
• Starring: Sirpa Lane, Lisbeth Hummel, Elisabeth Kaza
I absolutely love the off-kilter, ridiculously horny horror flicks of Polish madman Walerian Borowczyk! While undoubtedly a master of softcore shenanigans, ol’ Borowczyk plied his trade in the horror biz as well (most notably with The Strange Case Of Dr. Jekyll And Miss Osbourne), and the film I’m goin’ to be turnin’ my putrid peepers on today, The Beast!
Originally created for (and then cut from) Borowczyk’s Immoral Tales anthology (also available from Arrow on Blu-ray, but I opted out on that one as it’s primarily a horror-less softcore art film), La Bête (the footage of which now comprises a sizeable chunk of The Beast) presented the simple tale of a young lass who has copious amounts of sex with a continuously ejaculating werewolf...

Question. When is a zombie movie not a zombie movie? The answer in this case is when the director says so, and Umberto Lenzo is a great pains to point out that Nightmare City is absolutely not a zombie movie, despite what his friend Quentin Tarrantino keeps insisting, and that it is instead a film about people infected by radiation.
I have to admit that having originally seen Nightmare City back in the 1980s, I have always had fond memories of it being a zombie movie, but watching it again it’s clear that it has far more in common with George A Romero’s The Crazies and particularly the most significant film that it has influenced in recent years, Danny Boyle’s 28 Days Later, who Lenzi states in a fascinating thirty minute interview ‘copied him, but everybody knows that’.

To mark the release of Nightmare City on 24th August, we’ve been given 3 copies to give away on Blu-ray. Every year during the Halloween season, I make a point of searching out at least one horror movie that I've never seen before. This year I started going through some horror movies from the 1980s, and as you might expect, a lot of them look like ridiculous yet entertaining flicks. Since Halloween is coming up, I thought it would be fun to make a list of some of these movies that I came across that I have never heard of before and ones that maybe you haven't seen before either. I included a short synopsis, poster, and trailer for each one. Make sure you watch the trailer because some of them are sure to make you laugh. I love these kinds of films!

So, I’ll be the first to admit that I have never seen this film, nor have I ever heard it mentioned, even on the corners of the internet where friends are obsessed with Italian cinema. However, this is a Raro Video Blu-ray, which means it will be part of my collection. I don’t know if you that are reading have ever purchased a Raro Blu-ray before, but they are fantastic releases, and serve a great purpose of exposing us to some of the best of the criminally ignored entries into the Italian genre film scene. On August 5th, Raro Video, in partnership with Kino Lorber will release the new Raro Video Blu-ray release of Bankers of God: The Calvi Affair, and if you’re a fan of what Raro and Kino do, then you should probably hit this link and pre-order a copy for yourself.
