For my money, there's one easy answer to the question of the best television show of all time: it's "The Twilight Zone," obviously. Rod Serling's influential series, which originally premiered in 1959, offers something for everybody. There are scary episodes and thought-provoking ones, episodes with aliens and episodes with murder, and episodes that fall into the Western genre, science fiction, horror, and even comedy. That iconic theme music gives everything an air of the surreal, letting us know that we're watching a show where just about anything can happen.
Serling didn't like that the show reran in syndication, but that's part of what made it so enduring. From SyFy marathons to the series' ubiquity on various streaming services, audiences have been discovering "The Twilight Zone" for decades, sinking into its impressive back catalog in an effort to be scared, spooked, or simply entertained.

1997 was far more than merely a popular setting for sci-fi films, feeding into Y2K tech paranoia and dystopian themes. Films like Escape from New York, Predator 2, and Terminator 2 showcased unique visions of the worst ways for America to crumble. James Cameron's Terminator 2: Judgment Day established what is perhaps the most significant date in sci-fi lore, marking the day the evil computer network Skynet gained self-awareness and instigated a war against humanity.
For all the talk about the mind-blowing science-fiction released in 1997, Starship Troopers and Gattaca to name a few, we forget that the year was always special in movies. No, not in the way you'd think, not the real-life chronology, but in regard to the narratives taking place in the made-up year of 1997. For a lot of sci-fi authors, they never thought we'd escape the year, let alone the 20th century. As far as the fictional protagonists go,...

1956's "Forbidden Planet" follows a crew of astronauts traveling the galaxy in a flying saucer. While visiting planet Altair IV, they find a scientist and his daughter (Anne Francis) living alone on this deserted world — and realize they are hiding something.
Directed by Fred M. Wilcox and starring a young Leslie Nielsen, "Forbidden Planets looks like a kitschy B-movie today — and in a way it always was, but it was also a trailblazer. It was one of the first films to show humans in the distant future flying around in faster-than-light starships. Without "Forbidden Planet," there would be no "Star Wars" or "Star Trek."
While the Enterprise has an underbelly and nacelles beneath its saucer head, the "Forbidden Planet" ship (the C-57D) is a simple flying saucer — except this UFO is operated by humans, not aliens. The ship and the other effects got the "Forbidden Planet" special effects team an Oscar nomination.

Horrors on the high sea are a common enough theme, from Ghost Ship and Deathship to The Haunting of the Mary Celeste and Titanic 666 there are plenty of them. The most recent of these, The Haunting of the Queen Mary opens on Halloween Eve,1938 when the ship’s festivities are replaced with terror as an axe-wielding man hacks his way through its corridors.

The Creepshow 2 episode of The Black Sheep was Written and Narrated by Andrew Hatfield, Edited by Brandon Nally, Produced by Lance Vlcek and John Fallon, and Executive Produced by Berge Garabedian.
Its hard for a sequel to be better than the original – no, hey! Don’t close the article and please hold all hate in the comments until the end. I’m not saying Creepshow 2 (watch it Here) is better than the first movie, that’s just silly. Ok, so it’s hard for sequels to eclipse their previous iteration. Godfather II is always the answer to that but there are other things that you can prefer. Some people prefer the breakneck action of Aliens to the slasher in space of Alien. Others may enjoy Friday the 13th Part 2 with its higher violence (although it does have the same body count) and introduction to Jason to part 1’s mommy revenge story.

Happy Friday, everyone! This time last week, we celebrated the amazing independent horror films that were released throughout the 1970s, so it only makes sense that we shift our focus today to all the great indie genre movies and moviemakers that helped make the ’80s one of the most unforgettable decades in horror.
Much like the 1970s, we saw a handful of eventual Masters of Horror establish themselves as genre storytellers on the indie side of things throughout the ’80s. On the East Coast, we saw an explosion of creativity come out of New York City with filmmakers such as William Lustig, Frank Henenlotter, Larry Fessenden, and Troma’s Lloyd Kaufman making their feature debuts in the world of horror during the ’80s. And even though Troma Entertainment was founded in 1974, the company really came into its own during the 1980s as well. The indie studio founded by the aforementioned...

Happy (Good) Friday, everyone! Even though time isn’t much of a construct these days, the weekend is officially here and if you’re like me, you’re looking for ways to entertain yourself at home during this whole pandemic mess. And with the economy being what it is right now, I know it’s helpful for many folks out there to save money wherever you can, so I thought I would dive into all the great films over at Tubi TV to compile a list of more than 50 different cult films you can currently stream for free.
Just a note: there are a lot of definitions of “cult film,” so I did my best to not include a bunch of titles that horror fans throw around ad nauseam here, and I even opened up my search parameters a bit to include horror, sci-fi, and genre-adjacent titles that I feel...

From the golden age of Canadian tax shelters comes a horror movie about a fiendish, fearful freighter fraught with frills, I mean, chills. A notable cast — George Kennedy, Richard Crenna, Sally Ann Howes, Kate Reid — shows up for paycheck duty, and must have gone through real torture getting this one in the can. It’s got a reputation, and if being ripoff-remade is a marker of success, then it’s earned its place on the horror map: See George Kennedy apparently really doused in awful oily bilge water!

The best thing about vessel bound horror is the dearth of escape routes; hide in a cabin, behind a mast, or head over the side – these are your viable options. This is also the worst thing about same; fewer options can lead to repetition which can lead to boredom. So then, the bigger the vessel, the bigger the hellscape, and when you throw in some creepy Nazi haunting, you end up with Death Ship (1980), an oddly compelling thriller that plays like The Poseidon Adventure meets The Evil.
Okay, that’s a little bit of a sizzle sell; Death Ship doesn’t have the scope of the former or the effects of the latter, but it does achieve a grimy buzz as it progresses. Released by Avco Embassy in early March stateside, critics hated it and audiences failed to come aboard; it only brought in about a third of its $4.5 million dollar budget.

Ooh, it’s a great week for horror fans, as this Tuesday’s Blu-ray and DVD releases are a stellar bunch of films that will make for great additions to your personal collection of movies to enjoy from the comfort of your own home. Because it is the holiday season, I’m stoked to see Scream Factory show a little love to Silent Night, Deadly Night Part 2 with their Collector’s Edition Blu that hits shelves tomorrow, and for those of you who enjoy your horror movies with a side of sleaze, William Lustig’s Maniac has been given the 4K treatment by Blue Underground (and the film has never looked better).

Plagiarism, if done willingly and poorly, generally does not go unnoticed and one cannot help but see certain similarities in various works be it literature, art, or cinema. In listening to the audio commentary with author Jonathan Rigby and director Alvin Rakoff on the new, limited edition Blu-ray of 1980’s Death Ship, a horror oddity about an abandoned old ship inhabited by the ghosts of members of the Third Reich(!), a remark is made that the poster for 2002's Ghost Ship was remarkably similar to the poster art for Death Ship, and it’s true that the similarities are uncanny. I can't help but wonder who came up with the idea for the poster for Ghost Ship, as Death Ship was well over twenty-five years-old and seemed to be relegated to the land of forgotten cinema.

At the turn of the ‘80s, Jamie Lee Curtis was The face of horror; by this point she had already starred in Halloween (1978), and cemented her position with three releases in 1980 alone – The Fog in February, Prom Night in July, and today’s title, Terror Train, in October. It was a banner year for her, and for horror fans alike – well, apart from that snoozy school picture. Terror Train was a great way to end her 1980, and a fitting way to cap off 2016, as it’s a – ta da! – New Year’s Eve movie. Climb aboard for a fun, surprisingly classy ride.
There just aren’t that many horror films that take advantage of the holiday. New Year’s Evil (also 1980) is probably the most well known, and uses the neat conceit of the killer performing a bad deed for every time zone to, sadly, dull effect. Terror Train doesn...

Ahead of the December 4th theatrical release of Michael Dougherty's eagerly awaited holiday horror film Krampus, the fine folks at Legendary Comics are helping make the wait a little sweeter with their new graphic novel Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas.
Now available to purchase as a stocking stuffer or something to be enjoyed after dishing out the turkey later this week, Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas is an intriguing look at the darker side of the holidays through four interwoven tales taking place right before Christmas in a snowy small town. When the power goes out, toys come to life and evil elves emerge from the shadows to make the naughty wish they had been nice. Krampus and his chains have come to town, and his list is long and unmerciful.

Legenday Comics has published the Prequel to Krampus the movie coming this Thanksgiving. With mastermind Michael Doughtery helming the graphic novel this story gives a unique twist to the holiday spirit. Krampus: Shadow of Saint Nicholas follows the same blue print behind Trick R' Treat: Days of the Dead which gives you three different tales and links them all together in the fourth story.
Michael Doughtery does a great job managing the flow of the stories never really focusing on one major character. The story allows each character to find redemption during a time when we all assume everyone is happy and fine.
The artist do a great job of not portraying this novel to be too scary but also capture the warmth of family and forgiveness throughout the stories.

If you’ve craved more All Hallows’ Eve adventures since the end credits rolled in Michael Dougherty's 2007 holiday horror anthology, then you're in for a big Halloween treat from Legendary Comics via their new graphic novel, Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead.
Set around October 31st throughout the centuries, Days of the Dead features four macabre tales in which the tricks can be treacherous, but the treats are sweeter than any king-sized candy bar. The stories are collectively penned by Dougherty, Todd Casey, Zach Shields, and Marc Andreyko, and they leave a mark almost as indelible as the tales told onscreen in the Trick 'r Treat film—offering a good number of initial scares and leaving plenty of frightful food for thought to dig into after the last page is turned.

I recently had the chance to sit down with two of the talented writers (director Michael Dougherty was also a writer on the film) behind the upcoming film Krampus, Todd Casey and Zach Shields. Along with Dougherty they are also part of the team responsible for the four part collection of short stories set in the Trick 'r Treat universe, titled Days Of The Dead. While the original film has an extensive cult following, Days Of The Dead also serves as a little taste of what could possibly be a full-fledged film return to Sam's spooky little world.
Gt's Matt Mueller: One of the most noticeable things about all four stories is that at their core is an unexpected sentimentality. It is something I didn’t necessarily expect, but ultimately was a pleasant surprise. There is a lot of heartbreak and pain in these stories, but also a rather big splash of hope,...

Fans of the 2007 horror anthology Trick 'r Treat can now enjoy an early Halloween goodie in the form of Legendary Comics' Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead, a graphic novel containing four eclectic Halloween horror stories and featuring Sam, one of cinema's ultimate enforcers of All Hallow's Eve traditions. For our latest Q&A feature, Daily Dead caught up with two of the comic's co-writers, Todd Casey and Zach Shields, who discussed creating Days of the Dead, co-writing Michael Dougherty's upcoming Krampus film, and much more.
Where did the idea for Trick 'r Treat: Days of the Dead originate?
Todd Casey: I came late to the party, so I'll defer to the others on this. But my assumption is that people have been waiting a long time for Trick 'r Treat 2 (Mike included) and a comic made sense as a way to begin welcoming people back into that world.

Set in a visually haunting landscape, Hellions redefines the boundaries of horror with its potent brew of Halloween iconography, teenage angst, and desperate survival."
Directed by Bruce McDonald from a screenplay by Pascal Trottier, Hellions stars Chloe Rose, Rossif Sutherland, Rachel Wilson, Peter Dacunha, Luke Bilyk, and Robert Patrick.
Hellions is set to be released in the U.S. on September 18th,...

Cinematographer Shane Hurlbut has been touring the country with The Illumination Experience. This day-long workshop primarily covers lighting: how to get the best results, basic and advanced setups, and even how to do lighting on a budget. But the class also covers a lot of other material for the working cinematographer, everything from the advantages of different cameras and lenses to the correct way to hand off a C-Stand. The class begins with a demonstration of Hurlbut’s “Pirate Death Ship,” three lights attached to a dolly on a 360 degree rail system. With an actress sitting in the middle, the […]...

The fourth season of The Twilight Zone, means we’re nearing the end of the initial run of the series. Complications behind the scenes, such as scheduling changes, production and writing issues, lend to the fact that season four is probably the weakest of the five seasons of The Twilight Zone’s original run. One major thing that could have hindered the production this time around, is that a lot of the major players weren’t nearly as available to the project as they had been during previous seasons.
Also troubling the fourth season of this great show, was the inconsistency in episode running time. You do still have episodes that ran the standard time, but you also have some episodes that ran an hour long. Twilight Zone was not meant to fun for an entire hour. As much as the sound of that could appeal to a die-hard fan of the series,...

For most, Jacob “Jack” Klugman’s defining role was Oscar Madison, the quintessential white collar guy with a blue collar New York sensibility – loud, oafish, impulsive, a compulsive gambler and an inveterate slob – on the TV series adaptation of Neil Simon’s The Odd Couple, which ran on ABC 1970-75. Those among the Aarp crowd who like their vintage 1970s cop shows – stuff like Cannon, McCloud, Barnaby Jones, MacMillan and Wife — might also have fond remembrances of Klugman in Quincy M.E. (1976-1983) as a pushy, passionate medical examiner – who was also, at times, loud, oafish, impulsive, a compulsive gambler and a bit of a slob.
But when I heard Klugman had passed away on Christmas Eve, what flashed through my mind was the singular appropriateness of his passing on such a spirit-filled day, because my favorite onscreen memories of the actor were his four appearances on The Twilight Zone. What was the tie for me?...

Actor Jack Klugman died on Christmas Eve. He was 90.
The actor was best known for his role as Oscar, the messy half of The Odd Couple, for which he won two Emmy awards, and as the lead in the procedural series Quincy M.E. However, Klugman had several roles on classic genre television shows, most notably The Twilight Zone.
Klugman appeared in four episodes of the anthology series throughout its run. In "A Passage for Trumpet," he played a suicidal trumpet player who gets caught between life and death. In "A Game of Pool," Klugman played a billiards champion who faces off against a dead legend. Klugman played a captain in "Death Ship," where a space ship crash lands and the crew discovers an identical version of themselves already there. And in "In Praise of Pip," Klugman played a small-time bookie who has a sudden change of heart - much to the dismay of his bosses.

This week: There's no trip to Mars or Arnold Schwarzenegger, but the remake of "Total Recall" has Colin Farrell, Jessica Biel, Bryan Cranston and — by popular demand — a new three-breasted prostitute.
Also new this week is Clint Eastwood and Amy Adams in the baseball drama "Trouble With the Curve," the ensemble high school reunion romantic dramedy "10 Years" and the female-driven musical comedy "Pitch Perfect."
'Total Recall'
Box Office: $59 million
Rotten Tomatoes: 30% Rotten
Storyline: In this remake of the 1990 movie of the same name that is also based on a Philip K. Dick short story, factory worker Douglas Quaid (Colin Farrell) comes to believe that he's a real-life spy after visiting Rekall, a company that implants fantasy memories. Quaid then goes on the lam to find clues about his true identity in this dystopian sci-fi action movie directed by Len Wiseman. Kate Beckinsale stars as Quaid's lethal wife, Jessica Biel...

Beasts of the Southern Wild (2012) 20th Century Fox Blu-ray and DVD Available Now
Six-year-old Hushpuppy (fearless newcomer Quvenzhané Wallis) lives in the “Bathtub,” a southern Louisiana bayou community far removed from the civilized world. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry), a poor fisherman, keeps her at arm’s length but ensures her well-being within the cultural confines of their rough-and-tumble society. Seen through the eyes of the feisty Hushpuppy, the lines between myth and reality are blurred. An impending storm coincides with the melting of the arctic ice caps (and the thawing of some mythical creatures), which changes the world of the Bathtub forever. This heartbreaking little fable came out of nowhere last summer after building some positive buzz on the festival circuit. Shot on 16mm film for under $2 million, Beasts is a true independent film: a fiercely original and moving...

For those of you who like concise reviews without frills or spoilers then I will give you my opinion upfront so as to not waste your time as my time has been wasted. You do not have to see this movie unless you’re looking for a slightly new derivative of the “captured and tortured twenty something” picture. The film doesn’t bring anything to the table that you haven’t seen elsewhere. The end.
Now for the full frontal review with all the good bits. I’m not talking about boobies here although you might find a set or two in the movie worth noting. The Watermen takes place on the high seas following sports fisherman out and about on fishing trip who decide to get nosey and snoop in a crab fisherman’s crab cage only to discover a human arm. The fishermen realize they may have stumbled...

Aficionados of Bram Stoker's Dracula will be in for a double treat. Discounting a similarly titled Death Ship (1980), which bears no relation to the recent graphic novel of the same name, at least this tale may be the inspiration for a coming film, Last Voyage of the Demeter. News of this film broke early 2011 and as of late, David Slate (30 Days of Night) is to direct, and Bragi F. Schut (Season of the Witch) to write the screenplay. Until this film goes into production, UK residents have the treat of BBC Radio 4's version to tide them over. They provided a chilling version that was last broadcasted in '09, which is now hard to come by.
At least the graphic novel compilation of "Death Ship: The Last Voyage of the Demeter," is more current. Idw Publishing released this title Sept 28 and this tale explores the last few days of the Russian schooner,...

Stunt men and women are the go-to team for risk-taking. But is this school of hard knocks doing it tough in the industry. Georgina Pearson reports.
As humans, we have a natural fascination with danger. Since Buster Keaton emerged unscathed from a house collapsing around him (Steamboat Bill Jr) we have been unable to tear ourselves from a thrilling action sequence, or a daring gunfight.
However, with each actor comes a stunt double and despite their relatively low-profile these gutsy professionals put their bodies on the line for their craft – and in turn are vital to the success of the films they represent. But as we move into an age of increased CGI and VFX, the fundamentals of post-production are rapidly shifting. Not only do we now have the ability to digitally change the way an entire scene is shaped – but we can actually create the physical characters within that scene.

Chicago – I know that we’re starting to sound like a broken record here. If you check our coverage of the previous three season sets of “The Twilight Zone,” you’ll see that they’re among the highest-praised ever covered on this site. Guess what? The fourth season doesn’t break the pattern.
Blu-ray Rating: 5.0/5.0
I will say this — the fourth season of “The Twilight Zone” was definitely not the program’s best. Oh, there are certainly some highlights but, taken as a whole, it’s not as strong as any of the first three seasons. There’s your bit of criticism. It will end here.
Season four ran from January to May of 1963 and definitely features a few highlights, if not as many as previous seasons. Notable episodes include “He’s Alive,” “Mute,” and “No Time Like the Past.” One may immediately notice that this season features half the...

I admit I love surprises. But when Ghostbusters‘ director Ivan Reitman‘s 1972 horror debut dropped through my letterbox I was pretty much anticipating an amateurish mini-budgeted gore fest, complete with hammy acting, grainy photography and overall video nasty predictability. What I got was indeed all of the above but thankfully a lot more because Cannibal Girls is a superb little treat that creeps up on you like a bad rash (as appose to a good rash!), tickles your fancy then trickles you with blood and finally messes with your soul.
The near forty year old is finally released on DVD in the U.K. this week. Here is our review…
The film opens to an aerial shot of Canadian snow capped mountains where a voice over announces that “during the showing of Cannibal Girls, in consideration for those of you with delicate sensibilities a special warning bell has been installed.

David Slade is jumping back into the genre as director for the upcoming film The Last Voyage of the Demeter.
David Slade, who directed vampires in 30 Days of Night and Twilight Saga: Eclipse, is in talks to tackle the blood-sucking genre again with Phoenix Pictures’ long-in-the-works horror movie.
Ben Kingsley and Noomi Rapace are reportedly already attached to star as supporting characters while the Phoenix Pictures’ producers are still looking for someone to star in the leading role. Bragi Schut wrote the script for the film.
Set during Bram Stoker‘s original “Dracula,” the script centers on the Russian ship Demeter that shipping the vampire from Transylvania. In the original text, the vessel arrives in North Yorkshire, England minus all but one of its crew. Tied to his wheel, the dead captain remains onboard. Captain’s log is detailing the mysterious loss of all his men.

It's been several years since Warner Bros and Leonardo DiCaprio's Appian Way production company acquired theatrical film rights to the Rod Serling-written "Twilight Zone" episodes. The goal was to combine episodes that would become individual movies. Now comes word that Appian and Warners have decided to finally move forward and have hired Jason Rothenberg (Ron Howard's "Colossus") to write the first of possibly many "Twilight Zone" films. Meanwhile, Summit Entertainment is developing their own movie, based on the "Death Ship" episode about a group of astronauts who land on a planet only to find a crashed spaceship and corpses that eerily resemble their own.

I know that Bragi Schut's script for The Last Voyage of the Demeter has been in development for a few years, but jeez... Idw Publishing and writer Gary Gerani have cooked up a four-part comic book mini-series called "Death Ship: The Last Voyage of the Demeter." Also culled from a portion of Bram Stoker's "Dracula," in which we learn what happened on the Demeter as it transported Dracula to England, Idw's title ships in May. Gerani co-penned Stan Winston's Pumpkinhead and Idw describes the series like this: "Death Ship" takes readers on a blood-pumping journey on the Russian schooner Demeter. One by one, the terrified crewmembers vanish, victims of the unearthly lifeform that lies comatose in the ship's hold during daylight hours. Artist...

Shipbound scarefest Triangle sails into cinemas soon and this new clip gives us a sneak preview of what to expect. By the looks of it, lots of very bad things befalling Melissa George and her small band of friends.Triangle is set on a seemingly abandoned ocean liner which stops to rescue George and her fellow yachters when their boat is holed in the Bermuda Triangle. Aboard, they find that something or someone wants them dead, and with time continually looping on the ship, there's plenty of opportunity.Shades of 1980 B-horror Death Ship, perhaps - except without the Nazi zombie boat - or a horror Groundhog Day with portholes.Triangle is out across the UK on October 16.
