Jennifer Lopez is posed to hustle her way back into the awards race in October. That's when her Sundance-premiering movie musical, Kiss of the Spider Woman, opens to the general public courtesy of Roadside Attractions. A new trailer for the film landed on the world wide web today, offering a longer look at the Bill Condon-directed feature than the teaser that was released earlier in the summer.
Based on the 1993 Broadway musical that was based on Manuel Puig's 1976 novel and its 1985 feature Oscar-winning film adaptation, the new Spider Woman earned strong reviews on the festival circuit and awards Lopez a showcase role tailor-made for Oscar season. Here's everything you need to know about the film ahead of its Oct. 10 release date.

Great Scott! Back to the Future has hit the big 4-0, roughly half the speed required to send Doc Brown's DeLorean back and forth in time. But the Robert Zemeckis-directed movie doesn't feel like ancient history, even if it first zipped into theaters in the distant past of the 1980s. Fueled by pedal to the metal pacing, ingeniously-designed set-pieces and the dynamic duo Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd, Back to the Future, released on July 3, 1985, remains an eternally youthful summer blockbuster even while other studio films of that era are rattling around with broken parts.
Genius isn't always recognized in its time, though, which is why the movie's relatively poor showing at the 58th Academy Awards — held on March 24, 1986 — hangs extra-heavy four decades later. Back to the Future received four nominations and took home a single statue as Sydney Pollack's Out of Africa emerged as the evening's big winner.

John Huston directed some of the best movies in film history. From his pathbreaking noirs like The Maltese Falcon and The Asphalt Jungle to The African Queen or The Man Who Would Be King, Huston was nominated for 14 Oscars, winning two for The Treasure of Sierra Madre. Huston directed his final film, The Dead, while ill with emphysema, and died months before the film’s release. His penultimate film, the black comedy organized crime film Prizzi’s Honor, was easily one of his best — and that’s saying something.
Based on Richard Condon’s 1982 novel, Prizzi’s Honor was released 40 years ago, on June 14, 1985. The film centers Charley Partanna (Jack Nicholson), a mob hitman for the Prizzi family, who falls for Irene Walker (Kathleen Turner). The two become romantically entangled before the situation gets messy: he discovers Walker was married to a man Charley killed for stealing from the mob. That’s...

We're now just a couple of weeks away from the release of Ballerina, and the social media embargo for the John Wick spin-off movie has lifted.
The first reactions are mostly positive, and it sounds like Ballerina is a worthy addition to this incredibly popular franchise. Star Ana de Armas comes in for universal praise and the action sequences are said to be top-notch, but quite a few posts mention that the story is lacking.
Somewhat surprisingly, Keanu Reeves' appearance as John Wick is also said to be detrimental to the movie overall.
The response isn't exactly glowing across the board, but Lionsgate probably didn't need to worry too much about these social media reactions... certainly not enough to send out the following email!
Lionsgate has embargoed negative and critical reviews of ‘Ballerina’ until Wednesday, June 4 — one day before release.

With Ballerina nearly upon us, Lionsgate has been kind enough to share with us an exclusive clip from the movie, spotlighting a key scene where Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) seeks out a man named Daniel Pine (Norman Reedus) for help, but their meeting is cut short when a horde of armed goons come knocking.

Lionsgate has released the final trailer for Ballerina and it's easily the best one yet as we finally get to see Ana de Armas step into the fire and unleash her rage on a wide range of killers, including the legendary John Wick (Keanu Reeves).
In the film, she plays Eve Macarro, a young woman training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma. However, when she learns the truth behind her family's murder, she embarks on a one-woman mission to avenge her fallen loved ones or die trying.
Tickets are now on sale, with early premium large format screenings taking place on Wednesday, June 4! The runtime has also been confirmed, with the film clocking in at 125 minutes.
Early tracking numbers are currently projecting an opening weekend in the $39 million to $48 million range, with $45 million being the current target launch. If that holds, it would be the third-largest opening weekend for the franchise,...

Ballerina opens in just about a month, and as the marketing campaign ramps up, we've received a handful of new stills from the actioner, featuring Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young new Ruska Roma assassin that is out for revenge.
Like with any John Wick film, this one will also showcase extensive stunt work and larger than life action set pieces, none bigger than a sequence that will see the film's Academy Award-nominated star wield a flamethrower to take on a horde of baddies.
Speaking with Entertainment Weekly, de Armas detailed her rehearsal for the flamethrower sequence and how the whole experince absolutely shook her to her core. "I remember the first day the stunt team was practicing with the fire, and they told me to go do it before the shoot, and I said, 'No, no, no, I'll be fine,' and they got the main fire guy that gets burned,...

Hot on the heels of those awesome Mission: Impossible - The Final Reckoning posters, Lionsgate has debuted twelve kickass new character posters of their own for their upcoming actioner Ballerina, which stars Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas as Eve Macarro, a young new Ruska Roma assassin that is out for blood as she attempts to avenge her fallen family.
Standing in her way, however, will be an entire horde of top-level killers, none bigger than the legendary Baba Yaga himself, John Wick (Keanu Reeves), who it seems will be tasked with dissuading her conquest or taking her out... permanently.
While you'll have to wait until June to find out what ultimately happens when the two square off, the film is easily one of this summer's most anticipated offerings as Ana de Armas tackles the most physically demanding role of her career - and her deadliest role since playing the fan-favorite...

Late style can seem like a safe haven for the modern movie lover. Whether its the sparse styling of Clint Eastwood’s “Juror #2” or the multi-million-dollar gonzo flair of Francis Ford Coppola’s “Megalopolis,” there’s a vital, existential intrigue to directors who may seem over the hill, or encased in amber, and who can be easily dismissed as unfashionable.
“Nobody will admit that about Clint Eastwood though! Everybody on the internet is a Clint auteurist,” Karina Longworth says, chuckling. The film historian and former critic has been the writer and host of her podcast “You Must Remember This” since 2014. “It was definitely that in terms of ‘Megalopolis.’ … It is very easy to write off Coppola as a rich old man who doesn’t have to answer to anyone but himself and to say that that’s a problem. But the out-of-timeness, looking backwards and forwards, is what’s exciting about it.

For close to two decades, Jack Nicholson and Anjelica Huston were one of Hollywood’s top power couples. And while the flame fizzled, Nicholson proved how much of a card he still is by offering Huston his home as a refuge for her as she evacuated during this year’s wildfires in Los Angeles.
Anjelica Huston recently spoke of how Jack Nicholson reached out, saying, “The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him. It’s always a comfort when he calls. It was heartbreakingly sweet. I’ve gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation.”
Anjelica Huston and Jack Nicholson don’t see each other much anymore, which comes down to a mixture of being busy and construction… “Life gets in the way. Also, for some reason, they’ve been doing endless rerouting and road work near his house,...

Anjelica Huston revealed to People magazine that her ex Jack Nicholson called her out of the blue amid the L.A. wildfires earlier this year to offer his house for her to stay at. Huston was forced to evacuate her ranch in the Sierra Nevada mountain range during the event. Huston and Nicholson famously dated on and off from 1973 to 1990.
“The phone just rang out of nowhere, and it was him,” Huston said about Nicholson’s call during the wildfires. “It’s always a comfort when he calls… It was heartbreakingly sweet. I’ve gone back over it several times in my head, and I think next time I’d accept the invitation.”

Following up on the John Wick animated prequel news, Lionsgate also announced today that John Wick: Chapter 4 star Donnie Yen will direct and headline an upcoming spinoff film centered around his scene-stealing character Caine.
The untitled feature is expected to kickstart production in Hong Kong later this year, with a screenplay from The Batman Part II scribe Mattson Tomlin. Plot details remain under warps, but the new film will continue Caine's story arc following the events of Chapter 4, as he has been freed from his obligations to the High Table.
It will be stylistically modeled on the uniquely designed action films that Yen helped make famous, so fans of the action legend should be very, very excited.

"Rules and consequences."
Lionsgate has finally launched the brand new trailer for their upcoming action-thriller Ballerina, offering a killer new look at Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas (Knives Out; No Time to Die; Ghosted) heading into action as Eve Macarro, and it looks like her mission just got considerably more difficult than we imagined as she'll soon find herself up against Baba Yaga himself!
Yes, as the trailer reveals, The Director (Anjelica Huston) will send John Wick (Keanu Reeves) after Eve, in a last-ditch effort to stop her vendetta. John will offer her a choice, leave or die, and the battle commences. It certainly adds an interesting wrinkle to the film, as we were all previously under the assumption that Wick and Macarro would be allies and fight together, which could obviously still happen, but it looks like things will head into a different direction before the credits roll.

As an actor defined by his immense screen impact and his expansive versatility—as well as a celebrity adored for his charming personality and his humble candor—Stanley Tucci has admirers aplenty all over the world. It is easy to deduce that another reason for his widespread popularity is his exceptional and rich filmography, one that dates back to the mid 1980s, with his feature film debut as “Soldier” in the 1985 comedy flick Prizzi’s Honor starring Jack Nicholson and Kathleen Turner.

Anjelica Huston has been a recognizable actress for decades now. She has appeared in some major movies over her career. Many fans know her best as Morticia Addams in The Addams Family movies. Others know her as the Grand High Witch in the 1990 classic The Witches. Now 77, Huston is still working steadily and has more movies coming out in the near future.
However, in a recent photograph of the actress, she was almost unrecognizable. Here is a look at the photo and what she has coming up.

Jack Nicholson seems to have that devil-may-care, too-cool-for-school swagger that makes him seem like he could get away with anything. But even he wasn’t immune to the consequences of bad decisions—especially when it came to cheating on his ex-girlfriend, Anjelica Huston.
The story goes a little something like this: The Shining star, 87, got a very painful wake-up call from Huston after he made the classic mistake of stepping out on her with another woman. And no, it wasn’t a quiet breakup—it was an epic, full-on, real-life drama that could rival any of his movie roles.

As proven in David Fincher’s 2023 Netflix thriller The Killer, few have a cooler “I shall hunt you down and kill you” look than Michael Fassbender. Though perhaps he’s been matched by Cate Blanchett, his co-star in Steven Soderbergh’s upcoming thriller Black Bag.
The trailer, which just debuted on Tuesday morning, shows the two as elite London-based intelligence operatives (or something) and also a married couple. Security footage reveals that Blanchett’s character is in cahoots with some potential baddies, so Fassbender is tasked with taking her down. The film looks like a more serious spin on the Doug Liman action-comedy Mr. and Mrs. Smith starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, recently relaunched as an Amazon Prime Video series with Donald Glover and Maya Erskine. At the 2024 Academy Awards, Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon lost all 10 of its nominations, yet the movie still managed to break an impressive Oscars record. Based on a non-fiction book of the same name, Killers of the Flower Moon tells the true story of a string of murders committed against the Osage Nation in 1920s Oklahoma. With Leonardo DiCaprio and Lily Gladstone in the leads, this epic drummed up quite a bit of attention at the end of 2023. Yet, despite its star-studded cast and legendary director, the film came out of the Oscars empty-handed.
In total, Killers of the Flower Moon was up for ten awards at the 2024 Academy Awards: Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actress, Best Supporting Actor, Best Cinematography, Best Film Editing, Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Original Score, and Best Original Song. Once we reached the late 80s young Nathaniel was fully immersed in Oscar passions so there are less glaring omissions in films screened. Why am I talking about myself in the third person? Nevertheless 1987 is now so long ago that I really wonder about my initial take on so many of the movies. For instance, a lot of people I respect think very highly of The Dead – and it even gets a very loving homage in Almodovar’s current film The Room Next Door. I remember it as a high minded, intermittently potent drama but also kind of dull. It’s probable I was too young for it at the time (I did see it in theaters…and went specifically because Anjelica Huston had won the Oscar the previous year for 1985’s Prizzi’s Honor so I was in the flushes of new fandom). But we’re jumping ahead of ourselves.

Jack Nicholson was the epitome of the New Hollywood movie star. He broke through via the cultural earthquake that was "Easy Rider," and quickly established himself as a guarantor of quality filmmaking thanks to his star turns in "Five Easy Pieces," "Carnal Knowledge" and "The Last Detail." As the revolutionary spirit of the New Hollywood movement faded, Nicholson found himself becoming more of a traditional leading man in more traditional films like "The Postman Always Rings Twice," "Terms of Endearment" and "Prizzi's Honor." He worked in spurts, taking breaks here and there, but he was never gone for long — which is why his 14-year absence from our screens (save for the occasional Los Angeles Lakers game appearance) feels so notable. And sad.
While we let Nicholson enjoy his retirement, we've no shortage of classics, near-classics, and assorted oddities to remind us how great he could be when he was at...

After sharing a tease yesterday, Lionsgate has shared the first official trailer for their upcoming John Wick spinoff Ballerina, which stars Academy Award-nominee Ana de Armas in the lead role as a young assassin named Eve Macarro, who, after a tragedy, begins training in the ways of the Ruska Roma and plots her vengeance against those that wronged her family.
The film's official synopsis reads, "Taking place during the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, the film follows Eve Macarro (Ana de Armas) who is beginning her training in the assassin traditions of the Ruska Roma."
While the trailer does give us plenty of footage of the fan-favorite Cuban actress kicking all kinds of ass across the world, it wraps up with the most epic of cameos as the one-and-only Keanu Reeves reprises his iconic role as John Wick, a.k.a. Baba Yaga, and it looks like he'll...

Very few filmmakers have the distinction of creating a classic on their first effort. But John Huston, one of the greatest screenwriters and directors of the 20th century, did just that in 1941 with “The Maltese Falcon” and went on to create many classics by inventing, reinventing and reinvigorating genres.
Huston was born on August 5, 1906, in Nevada, Missouri. His father was the great actor Walter Huston, and young John developed an interest in the stage at a young age watching his father perform in vaudeville. He was a sickly child with an enlarged heart and kidney ailments but eventually overcame that to drop out of school at the age of 14 to become a professional boxer.
As a young adult, Huston wrote and sold several short stories, and made his way to Hollywood when “talking pictures” created a demand for writers. He took a short hiatus from Hollywood after the car he...

Welcome back to Oscars Playback, in which Gold Derby editors and Experts Christopher Rosen and Joyce Eng revisit Oscar ceremonies and winners of yesteryear. This week, we cover the 58th Academy Awards in 1986, honoring the films of 1985.
“Out of Africa” and “The Color Purple” co-led with 11 nominations, but it was a tale of two fates for the epics. The former grabbed seven awards, including Best Picture and Best Director for Sydney Pollack, while the latter, which already missed a director bid for Steven Spielberg, infamously went 0-11. But the dominance by “Out of Africa” isn’t exactly the same as the ones by predecessors “Amadeus,” “Terms of Endearment” and “Gandhi.”

Prizzi's Honor (1985) and Mr. and Mrs. Smith (2005) share a similar premise of married assassins, but differ in execution and tone. Prizzi's Honor focuses on Charley's inner struggle, while Mr. and Mrs. Smith explores a more comedic approach to the situation. Mr. and Mrs. Smith also shares similarities with True Lies in several ways.
The 1985 black comedy crime film Prizzis Honor stars Jack Nicholson as Charley Partanna, a hit-man and lifelong mob soldier who, as the film opens, falls in love with a mystery woman, Irene, oblivious to the fact that Irene is also employed as a mob assassin. After marrying Irene, played by Kathleen Turner, Charley and Irene eventually find themselves in the position of being ordered to kill each other.
The basic premise of Prizzis Honor was, of course, repeated in the 2005 action comedy film Mr. and Mrs. Smith, in which Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie play a suburban...

Jack Nicholson is one of the all-time Hollywood legends – and was one of the all-time partiers, too. With both comes a wealth of stories about his most raucous days. So saddle up, kids, it’s time to hear a funny tale about Jack Nicholson and cocaine!
As recalled by Kevin Spacey – who actually made his debut in the Jack Nicholson / Meryl Streep film Heartburn – the three-time Oscar winner put himself in a potentially awkward situation with a sound man during the making of Prizzi’s Honor, John Huston’s 1985 crime film which earned him his fifth Best Actor nomination. In a pitch-perfect Nicholson impression, Spacey remembered sound mixer Dennis Maitland telling him the story, which took place in Nicholson’s trailer.
As it goes, Maitland expressed his excitement for again working with the star, reminding the actor that they met back on 1976’s The Missouri Breaks. Nicholson replied,...

Dan Wallin, the music scoring engineer who recorded such classic film scores as “Spartacus,” “Bullitt,” “The Wild Bunch” and “Out of Africa,” died early Wednesday in Hawaii. He was 97.
Twice Oscar-nominated for best sound (1970’s “Woodstock” and 1976’s “A Star Is Born”), he won a 2009 Emmy for sound mixing on the Academy Awards telecast and received two additional Emmy nominations in the sound mixing category.
But it was Wallin’s skill behind the console, recording and mixing musical scores for movies and TV, that won him legions of fans among nearly all of Hollywood’s top composers and ensured steady employment for more than half a century.
He recorded the music for an estimated 500 films, including those for “Bonnie and Clyde,” “Cool Hand Luke” and “Finian’s Rainbow” in the 1960s; “The Way We Were,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Nashville,” “King Kong” and “Saturday Night Fever” in the 1970s; “Somewhere in Time,” “The Right Stuff...

The 2024 Oscar nominees for Best Director are Jonathan Glazer (“The Zone of Interest”), Yorgos Lanthimos (“Poor Things”), Christopher Nolan (“Oppenheimer”), Martin Scorsese (“Killers of the Flower Moon”), and Justine Triet (“Anatomy of a Fall”). Our odds currently show that Nolan (3/1) is most likely to win, followed in order by Lanthimos (4/1), Glazer (9/2), Triet (9/2), and Scorsese (9/2).
Three of these five filmmakers have been nominated at least once before, with Scorsese standing out as the only previous victor in the group. Now on his 10th bid (only two behind category record holder William Wyler), he initially triumphed on his sixth for “The Departed” (2007), which is also the only Best Picture winner in his filmography. He earned his remaining notices for “Raging Bull” (1981), “The Last Temptation of Christ” (1989), “Goodfellas” (1991), “Gangs of New York” (2003), “The Aviator” (2005), “Hugo” (2012), “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014), and “The Irishman” (2020).

Throughout the 96-year history of the Academy Awards, the amount of acting lineups consisting only of first-time nominees has reached 37, or about 10% of the overall total. While that number may not seem high in a general sense, these cases actually outnumber those exclusively involving veteran contenders by a ratio of three to one. However, although this list expanded as recently as 2023, rookie-only acting lineups are gradually becoming less common than veteran-only ones, the amount of which has nearly doubled within the last dozen years.
Whereas 75% of veteran-only acting quintets have involved lead performers rather than supporting ones, almost the exact opposite is true of lineups full of newcomers. For instance, only one existing case of the former kind concerns supporting actresses, whereas the same category has produced 15 rookie-only rosters. The last such group consisted of 2000 winner Angelina Jolie and nominees Toni Collette (“The Sixth Sense”), Catherine Keener (“Being John Malkovich...

As awards season rolls around, there’s arguably no award more prestigious (outside of maybe the Palme d’Or) than the Academy Award, which makes the Hustons all the more impressive for being the first family with three generations of Oscar winners. While readers wouldn’t be faulted for assuming that the Coppolas were the first family to achieve this feat, as Francis and his daughter Sofia are both Oscar-winning writer/directors, the Hustons got there first in 1986 when Anjelica Huston won the award for Best Supporting Actress for Prizzi’s Honor. But who were the winners prior within the Huston family, and just how unified was this effort to conquer the Academy Awards across generations?...

In 2000 – merely two years after she scored her first Golden Globe nomination for her supporting turn in “Boogie Nights” – Julianne Moore earned concurrent lead notices from the same organization for “The End of the Affair” (drama) and “An Ideal Husband” (comedy/musical). That instance of dual recognition made her the 16th woman to have competed for all three possible film acting Golden Globes, joining the likes of Jane Fonda, Shirley MacLaine, and Emma Thompson.
Now, two decades deeper into her career, she just landed another Best Film Supporting Actress bid for “May December,” which makes her only the third performer with at least three mentions in each film Golden Globe category.
With this new film nomination, Moore has three of each kind. The 63-year-old’s sophomore supporting notice came in 2010 for “A Single Man,” while her remaining lead bids were for the comedies “The Kids Are All Right” (2011) and “Maps to the Stars...

Very few performers who became Golden Globe nominees in their teens can claim to have stayed in the organization’s good graces as adults, but, with 13 notices and three wins spread over nearly 30 years, Leonardo DiCaprio is more justified in doing so than anyone else. As it happens, the film star has picked up multiple Golden Globe bids during each decade of his adult life, and he is now working on squeezing in another just before he enters his 50s. If he winds up clinching his third Best Film Drama Actor trophy for “Killers of the Flower Moon” this winter, he will tie the illustrious record for most victories in that category.
DiCaprio’s previous Golden Globe wins came for his lead performances in the dramas “The Aviator” (2005) and “The Revenant” (2016) and the comedy “The Wolf of Wall Street” (2014). This potential new drama bid would be his ninth, following unsuccessful...

Since 2012, revered filmmaker Martin Scorsese has belonged to a select group of three-time Best Director Golden Globe winners that grew to include six members when Steven Spielberg took last year’s prize for “The Fabelmans.” Over a decade later, the ever-active octogenarian has a strong chance at rising above his fellow triple champs by achieving another directing victory for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” thus following Elia Kazan as the second quadruple honoree in this category’s 81-year history. Since this would be his 10th time competing here, he would also join Spielberg in the rare distinction of having double-digit directing mentions.
Scorsese earned his first Golden Globe Award in 2003 for “Gangs of New York” (on his sixth bid) and was then further lauded for “The Departed” (2007) and “Hugo” (2012). His remaining half dozen directing notices came for his work on “Raging Bull” (1981), “Goodfellas” (1991), “The Age of Innocence” (1994), “Casino” (1996), “The Aviator...

In 1964 Barbra Streisand became a star when she opened the original Broadway production of “Funny Girl” as real-life actress, singer and comedian Fanny Brice. Despite rave reviews, she ended up losing the Tony for Best Actress in a Musical to Carol Channing for “Hello, Dolly!” But in 1968 Babs made her motion picture debut in a film adaptation of “Funny Girl” directed by William Wyler, reprising her role as Fanny. She went on to win the Oscar for Best Actress (famously in a tie with Katharine Hepburn for “The Lion in Winter”). In 1970 Eileen Heckart was Tony nominated for her featured performance as Mrs. Baker in “Butterflies are Free,” but lost to her co-star Blythe Danner. But in 1972 Heckart reprised her role in a film adaptation, which won her an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

Like many Oscar addicts, I’ve been struggling with my early predictions in all four of the acting categories. Based on what I’ve seen, read and heard, there don’t appear to be any bonafide locks in any of the acting races. Even the early frontrunners are in potentially precarious positions. It feels like someone could suddenly come out of nowhere, and take a commanding lead.
Well, I’m pleased to announce that we finally have a shoo-in for at least one of 2023’s Academy Awards for acting. Many will be skeptical. But remember that many were similarly skeptical when I touted Jamie Lee Curtis in “Everything Everywhere All at Once” for Oscar recognition around this time last year.
And realize that I only make this proclamation after seeing the highly anticipated film adaptation of the musical “The Color Purple.” Here are five reasons why Danielle Brooks will win the Best Supporting Actress Oscar.

Andrzej Bartkowiak got his start in the entertainment industry working as a cinematographer, working on such films as Terms of Endearment, Prizzi’s Honor, Twins, Falling Down, Speed, Species, Dante’s Peak, The Devil’s Advocate, U.S. Marshals, Lethal Weapon 4, Thirteen Days, and Trespass. But back at the turn of the century he also got into directing, working mainly in the action genre: Romeo Must Die, Exit Wounds, Cradle 2 the Grave, Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li, Maximum Impact, Dead Reckoning. His most well-known movie, for better or worse, may be the action horror video game adaptation Doom. Now Deadline has announced that Bartkowiak is treading back into horror territory, as he has signed on to direct the supernatural thriller The Dire Wolf.
Coming our way from Steelyard Pictures, The Dire Wolf has a screenplay written by Ry Cook and is expected to start filming in New Mexico soon, aiming for a 2024 release.
