How You Can Impact Gh Alum William deVry’s Gritty Film ‘Spill’
Image
Every so often, General Hospital fans enjoy a mention of William deVry’s complex character Julian Jerome, because he was Lucas’ father. Sadly, Julian was killed after clashing with Sonny, and the footbridge they were on collapsed in 2020. Since then, he’s appeared on a few TV shows and movies, and recently shared exciting news about an upcoming project.

He Spilled the Beans

DeVry has been posting about his upcoming movie, Spill, on Instagram. In one, he shared the trailer and captioned it, “Living our dreams and having fun. @spillmovie Starring [Sofia Unal], me, and [director, Blake Ridder]. Times like this, I think about people who aren’t able to live their dreams cause they are busy fighting for their lives.”

A post shared by William Devry Simard (@therealwildevry1)

He continued by explaining how the fans could help support the movie: “Please join @srocf sandyovarian.org for some of our events,...

Katherine Heigl Worries Her Kids Will “Make Fun” Of ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ Ghost Sex Scene
Image
With two decades of wild, emotionally-charged television to pull from, Grey’s Anatomy has given fans plenty of unbelievable moments.

After 20 years, Katherine Heigl recently admitted she can’t watch the ABC medical procedural with her kids, crediting her ghostly sex scene with co-star Jeffrey Dean Morgan in the Season 5 episode ‘In the Midnight Hour’ (2005) as one that makes her “so embarrassed.”

“We have not watched Grey’s. Partly because I was like, ‘How do I explain that?'” she told Entertainment Weekly of the scene. “But I’m like, “‘ou can watch it, but I don’t want to sit next to you. I will be so embarrassed.’ I don’t know how to explain this. And she will make me embarrassed. She will make fun of me. No, it’s better not to give her that ammunition. Do you know what I’m saying?”

In Season 2 of the Shonda Rhimes series,...

One Of Macaulay Culkin's Earliest Roles Was In A Beloved '80s Crime Thriller Series
Image
Macaulay Culkin might not be as big a presence in Hollywood as he once was, but the actor will forever remain beloved to anybody that grew up in the '90s. That's not only due to the fact he played one of the most legendary on-screen scamps in Kevin McCallister for two "Home Alone" movies, but also because he will always be the kid with a McDonalds in his own house, thanks to him playing the title role in 1994's "Richie Rich." His endearing cheekiness equally paired so well with John Candy's Buck Russell in the sometimes-overlooked but perpetually charming "Uncle Buck."

If those were the only three roles Culkin ever played, that would be enough to maintain his standing as a '90s legend. But before he took an extended break from acting in 1994, the actor had a considerable career outside of those well-known films, including an upsetting...

Cindy Morgan, Original Tron Movie & Caddyshack Actor, Dies At 69
Image
Tron actor Cindy Morgan, known for her roles in Tron and Caddyshack, has passed away at 69. She was found dead in her home by her roommate after returning from vacation, with police suspecting natural causes. Despite being a low-profile actor with few credits, Morgan also appeared in American Gigolo, The Midnight Hour, and Falcon Crest.

An original Tron actor, Cindy Morgan, was found dead in her home. Morgan made her name as an actor with appearances in Tron and Caddyshack but was largely a low-profile figure with few credits to her name. Besides those two movies, she also starred in American Gigolo, The Midnight Hour, and Falcon Crest, among other movies and shows.

While there was hope that Morgan might cameo in Tron: Ares, it is likely no longer possible. According to TMZ, Morgan died at the age of 69 and was found in her home by a roommate. The roommate...

Cindy Morgan, Star Of Tron And Caddyshack, Is Dead At 69
Image
"Tron" and "Caddyshack" star Cindy Morgan has died, TMZ is reporting. The actress who appeared in several hit films and TV shows, most notably in the 1980s, was 69 years old. The outlet confirmed the news with the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, but the details surrounding Morgan's passing are not currently available.

Morgan began her career as a weather reporter, but her first on-screen acting role came in 1979, when she played Elaine in the erotic comedy "Up Yours." Known for her striking blonde hair and blue-eyes, Morgan was cast in bombshell roles, including as the goofily named character Lacy Underall in the 1980 Bill Murray-led comedy "Caddyshack." The actress soon found herself in the zeitgeist, appearing in the cyberspace action-adventure film "Tron" as Dr. Lora Baines, a scientific assistant who was dating Encom programmer Alan (Bruce Boxleitner). In the same film, Morgan also played Yori, a cool and powerful computer program that,...

Actress Cindy Morgan, whose credits include Caddyshack and Tron, has died.

Per TMZ, Morgan's death was confirmed by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, but the circumstances surrounding her passing are not yet clear. All that's known at this time is that Morgan died "in the area." She was 69 years old.

Morgan may have been best known for playing Lacey Underall in the 1980 comedy Caddyshack, which marking one of her first feature film roles. Directed by Harold Ramis, the film also starred Chevy Chase, Rodney Dangerfield, and Bill Murray. The widely celebrated film is still very popular to this day, considered by many to be among the very best sports comedies ever created. 5 Deep Cut Horror Movies to Seek Out in October 2023
Image
For a horror fan, the month of October is naturally designated for everything related to Halloween. So this month’s installment of Deep Cuts Rising features a variety of horror movies that take place on or around October 31st. As usual, though, these selections can generally be considered overlooked, forgotten or unknown.

This month’s Halloween-themed offerings include zombies, witchcraft, killers, and more.

The Midnight Hour (1985)

Image: The Midnight Club (1985)

Directed by Jack Bender.

The Midnight Hour is a great warm-up for the Halloween season, right before diving into heavier or scarier movies. This telefilm originally aired on ABC, then later showed up on cable. While it didn’t open to rave reviews, it has certainly found an audience over the years. The plot is simple enough: teens fool around with magic and accidentally raise an evil sorceress on Halloween. As the night goes on, the town is taken over by ghouls and monsters.

‘DC’s Terrors Through Time #1’ Review
Image
Written by Various | Art by Various | Published by DC Comics

Although the 80-page giants generally have been pretty good, especially the wave of books we had celebrating various character anniversaries, DC of late have struggled a little with the anthology books. I should say it’s not just DC, but as once upon a time they were the masters of the format it is most noticeable with them. The mix of creative teams isn’t the issue either. A blend of known names and up-and-comers was always the way DC’s mystery books operated, and it served them very well. What drew me to this book the most was Paul Levitz writing Phantom Stranger (that alone is worth the entrance price), and Tom Mandrake and Kelley Jones illustrating two tales. Let’s hope the other stories can add some scary fun as well.

The know the score with these books,...

Playwright Kathleen Collins to Receive Posthumous Icon Tribute at Gotham Awards
Image
Poet, playwright, writer, filmmaker, director, civil rights activist and educator Kathleen Collins will receive the inaugural Icon Tribute posthumously during the Gotham Awards Ceremony on Nov. 29. Nina Lorez Collins will accept the award on behalf of her mother.

“Kathleen Collins lived an inspirational life itself worthy of a film. She fought for civil rights, then fought for the opportunity to tell powerful stories about people of color,” said Jeffrey Sharp, executive director of the Gotham Film and Media Institute. “She is an expert and nuanced storyteller who overcame a variety of systematic obstacles in order to tell stories that challenged stereotypes and featured nuanced depictions of marginalized communities. It is an honor to recognize this talented and dedicated individual who never got the appreciation she deserved.”

The Gotham Icon Tribute was conceived by the Gotham Awards Advisory Committee this year on its 31st anniversary to call attention to the boldness,...

A Halloween Party On Screen: Celebrating 35 Years of Made-for-tv Movie ‘The Midnight Hour’

Long before Disney’s Halloweentown became requisite Halloween viewing for a generation, there was The Midnight Hour. First airing on ABC on November 1, 1985, the made-for-television movie was the Halloweentown of the ’80s, a light, breezy horror-comedy that embraced the holiday in every way. It’s a time capsule movie, and its plot doesn’t make a lot of sense in […]...

20 Essential Grateful Dead Shows
Image
Choosing and justifying a list of essential Grateful Dead shows — 20, 200, or even 2,000 — is treacherous work. Passionate challenge from fans, especially hardcore Deadheads and veteran tape traders, is guaranteed. Endless debate over set-list minutiae is inevitable. In fact, there is only one definitive list of the Dead’s greatest concerts — and it includes every show they played, in every lineup, from their pizza-parlor-gig days as the Warlocks in 1965 until guitarist Jerry Garcia‘s death in 1995.

That long, strange trip was a continually unfolding tale of highs and trials, dedicated evolution and surrender to the moment,...

SXSW’s ‘Run This Town’ Gets Tense With Score From Two Celebrated Hip-Hop Producers
Damian Lewis, Nina Dobrev, Mena Massoud, and Ben Platt in Run This Town (2019)
Writer-director Ricky Tollma’s “Run This Town” — about a young Toronto journalist’s quest to break the infamous Rob Ford crack-smoking story — premiered at SXSW over the weekend, and the movie’s score plays a subtle but pivotal role in stringing viewers along for the tense ride .

The team behind the score is Ali Shaheed Muhammad, famous as the longtime DJ/co-producer for A Tribe Called Quest, and Adrian Younge, who’s produced Kendrick Lamar, Jay-z, Wu-Tang Clan and Common, among many others. The pair previously scored Netflix/Marvel’s “Luke Cage,” and released their first album together, “The Midnight Hour,” last year.

Variety caught up with the pair to talk about their work on “Run This Town,” which stretches well past any hip-hop preconceptions with a variety of sounds — sometimes all bold and organic percussion, other times quieter and French horn-inflected, often reaching back for a feel that recalls...

It Came From The Tube: Deadly Messages (1985)
TV didn’t always upend the horror formula; but when they would add a couple of different colors to the mix, the result was usually at least interesting. Such is the case with Deadly Messages (1985), which throws the whole palette at the screen for a very messy, but entertaining distraction.

Originally broadcast February 21st as part of The ABC Thursday Night Movie, the telefilm could not have picked a worse night to premiere: in addition to CBS’ solid lineup of Magnum, P.I. and Simon & Simon, NBC had the biggest block on the air – The Cosby Show/Family Ties/Cheers/Night Court. Oh well. For the six other people not watching that, they were left with a goofy and breezy murder mystery come Ouija board spookfest.

Let’s pull apart our sun kissed faux TV Guide and see what the spirits have to say:

It Came From The Tube: The Midnight Hour (1985)
There’s an in between zone that parents often look for if they’re easing their kids into horror. If they’re fans of the genre themselves, the urge to take the tykes from Scooby-Doo to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre is very tempting. I was one of the fortunate ones who was allowed to cut out the middleman and dive right into the heady stuff. So it was then that I missed out on a great bridge between the two extremes, The Midnight Hour (1985), ABC’s successful bid to get the Thriller-crazy crowd on their side.

Originally airing November 1st as part of The ABC Friday Night Movie (really? There was no Thursday slot open to make it for Halloween?), The Midnight Hour fought off CBS’ Dallas for its first half and NBC’s Miami Vice for the back, but those shows weren’t the ideal demographic anyway – this...

“Darkness falls across the land. The midnight hour is close at hand.” It’s always been kind of a bummer to me that writers often get left out in the cold, and the iconic song Thriller is a great example of what I mean. You know that it’s a Michael Jackson song, you know that John […]...

The Midnight Hour (1985)

Written by: William Bleich

Directed by: Jack Bender

Cast: Shari Belafonte Harper (Melissa), Lee Montgomery (Phil), Jonna Lee (Sandy), LeVar Burton (Vinnie), Peter DeLuise (Mitch), Deedee Pfeiffer (Mary), Jonelle Allen (Lucinda Cavender), Kevin McCarthy (Judge Crandall), Dick Van Patten (Martin Grenville)

This is the very first time I’ve featured a TV movie on any of my reviews. I’m really surprised that it is. Some solid entries in the annals of horror and sci fi history made their debut on the small screen. “Salem’s Lot” is the first one to come to mind. Although the film that I’m going to talk about isn’t even remotely close to being anything like “Salem’s Lot” (except for having vampires), it does come from a bygone era where things might have been a little tighter on what could be shown on TV.

The 'X Factor' 4-chair challenge needs more cutthroat judges
We've narrowed it down to the Top 40 on "The X Factor." Now they will each perform for the judges in the four-chair challenge, which is where the mentors will systematically narrow their 10 acts down to four.

The way it works is each mentor has four chairs to fill and they fill them as they go along, but once they are full, in order to add another act, they must eliminate one. It's not like this is anything new on a singing competition show (narrowing from a few dozen to a pseudo-Top 10) but this format should prove quite dramatic.

To recap the categories, Kelly Rowland has over 25s, Paulina Rubio has boys, Demi Lovato has girls and Simon Cowell has groups.

The Over 25s

Victoria Carriger is up first, she's the separated mom of eight children. She sings "To Make You Feel My Love" with a very coffeehouse-y vibe. She...

But by December 2011 a small tumor developed and another surgery was in order, which left her completely bed-ridden. Her cancer seemed conquered though. By spring 2012 she was doing a lot better...

Saturday Night Live (1975)
Seth Meyers to replace Jimmy Fallon? Meh. How about one of these funny ladies instead?
Saturday Night Live (1975)
Don’t get us wrong — we’ve got no beef with Seth Meyers. His wry delivery is perfect for Saturday Night Live’s Weekend Update, and he’s written plenty of classic sketches, including last fall’s masterful Louie/Lincoln parody.

But when word broke that NBC will supposedly bring in Meyers to host Late Night once Jimmy Fallon decamps for The Tonight Show, we couldn’t help meeting the news with a noncommittal shrug. Sure, he’d be a fine man for the job, and God knows SNL could use some new blood in its writers room. At the same time,...

“Midnight Hour” tells a Christmas tale vastly unlike Dickens
With the holiday season fast approaching, “Lee Martin’s The Midnight Hour” has picked out a special gift for viewers, wrapped in blood-red paper and placed under the tree along with a few spare body parts.

On December 1st, the cult-tv series will unleash a monumentally mean-spirited ode to the season of brotherly love with its latest entry, “I’ll Be Homicidal for Christmas.” In it, unbalanced single dad Ed (Todd Moriarty) kills his trashy, teen-aged daughter … Continue reading →...

“Midnight Hour” puts a retro comic-book spin on Father’s Day
On June 17, millions will celebrate Father’s Day with a card, a gift or a dinner. But “Lee Martin’s The Midnight Hour” has a unique way of saluting dad: with a chainsaw.

In this month’s all-new episode, “How I Dismembered Your Mother,” a grassroots family man named Bruno (Didrik Davis) discovers that his rebellious wife plans to divorce him and take with her their young son, he goes on a chainsaw-wielding rampage of death which ends with the show’s signature twist at “The Midnight Hour.”

This entry airs as the show’s fourth season draws to a close (the season finale, “Secret of the Blood Children,” airs in August) and is rife with drama, dismemberings and death. Area 51 Confidential Trailer: A new trailer for the found footage film Area 51 Confidential has just been released.

“Presented under the guise of a “military training video for new hires at the facility known as Area 51″, we follow the plight of a handful of individuals – a broadcast journalist, a documentarian, a teenage girl from Roswell, an army Colonel, and a man who had previously been thought “missing” for a number of years – as they awaken in the desert area surrounding Area 51.

Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
American Idol Recap Top 7 Redux Performance Recap: Don't Trust the D– in Seat No. 3
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
American Idol judge Randy Jackson is quite possibly the most ridiculous person on television today, but I’m not sure I have any vitriol left for the man who is affectionately/ragefully known by the Idoloonie Nation as “The Dawg.” (Yes, folks, that’s the ‘D–’ I was referring to in my headline.)

I mean, imagine an Idol without Randy: Who else would use his position on the panel to wear offensive orchid blazers and try to launch a line of hideous hand-beaded pins. (That has to be the reason for those pins, right?) Who else could proudly blab about...

Jessica Sanchez in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
Laura Prudom: 'American Idol' Recap: A Favorite Falters For The First Time
Jessica Sanchez in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
After last week's shocking bottom three (and the subsequent use of the judges' save on Jessica Sanchez), there seemed to be a shift in the dynamics on "American Idol" on April 18. The theme was "Now and Then," with the contestants tackling two songs each -- one modern and one soul classic.

The theme seemed to suit some performers more than others, and not necessarily those you'd expect. Hollie Cavanagh finally managed to get a compliment (or three) from the judges, while Joshua Ledet's confidence seemed a little shaken after last week's trip to the bottom three. Colton Dixon had one of his weakest weeks to date, and while Jessica Sanchez was once again in top form, is that enough to bring the voters back to her after last week's surprising results? Read on for our rundown of the Top 7's performances, which featured two Lady Gaga renditions, two from Alicia Keys,...

American Idol Top 7 (Part 2) Cover 'Now & Then' Theme: Who Were Your Favorites?
Lionel Richie, Ryan Seacrest, Carrie Underwood, and Luke Bryan in American Idol: The Search for a Superstar (2002)
Whether or not you know what a quartet is — and make no mistake, Randy Jackson is pretty certain you don’t — there’s no denying that American Idol‘s Top 7 Redux performance night was packed more tightly than J.Lo’s shoe closet. A whopping 14 songs over two hours represented a new Idol record, noted Ryan Seacrest, and while I can’t say the evening came close to last week’s sensational Top 7 (Part 1) telecast, there were certainly enough enjoyable moments that I never once felt a pang of resentment over having to DVR Don’t Trust the B— in Apt.
