Smita Patil had completed her entire work in this movie, but the movie was released after her demise.
The film actually started the trend of supporting actor award for National Award as the jury didn't know what award to give Suresh Oberoi.
Mirch Masala is the only movie which features the mother-daughter trio, Dina Pathak, Supriya Pathak and Ratna Pathak. The film also features Naseeruddin Shah and Raj Babbar (in a guest appearance), husbands of Ratna Pathak and Smita Patil respectively.
The movie is based on a well known Gujarati writer Chunilal Madia's short story Abhu Makrani. This is credited in the titles.
