Bring on the discoveries. Look back at last year’s Sundance program and a number of once-unidentifiable titles morphed, after upbeat reviews and publicity and box-office or streaming, into high-profile breakouts and Oscar contenders — from “Love Lies Bleeding,” “Kneecap,” “A Different Man,” “Thelma,” and “A Real Pain” to “Sugarcane,” “Will & Harper,” and “Black Box Diaries.”

The Sundance Film Festival is once again upon us! Set to happen from January 23rd to February 2nd in Park City, Utah (with an online component from January 30th to Feb 2nd), the official schedule was unveiled today, and once again it’s an eclectic mix of indie fare, award hopefuls, and horror flicks. Once again, I’ll be there for JoBlo, filing a ton of reviews. To note, in recent years, Sundance has become especially well known for genre fare, with Hereditary, Talk to Me, and I Saw the TV Glow all premiering in the midnight section of the fest. This year’s Midnight selection includes some very buzzy titles:
Dead Lover / Canada –– A lonely gravedigger who stinks of corpses finally meets her dream man, but their whirlwind affair is cut short when he tragically drowns at sea. Grief-stricken, she goes to morbid lengths to resurrect him through madcap scientific experiments,...

Tonatiuh has signed with CAA.
Tonatiuh recently wrapped filming the lead role of Molina in “Kiss of the Spider Woman,” directed by Bill Condon, opposite Jennifer Lopez and Diego Luna.
The film, produced by Artists Equity and Lopez’s Nuyorican Productions, is based on Manuel Puig’s critically acclaimed and bestselling 1976 novel. “Kiss of the Spider Woman is set in an Argentinian prison in 1981. Lopez stars as the titular role, a fantasy woman named Aurora created by Luis Molina (Tonatiuh), a queer window dresser serving an eight-year sentence for allegedly corrupting a minor. To escape the horrors of his imprisonment, Molina imagines movies starring Aurora as a classic silver screen diva, including a role of the spider woman, who kills her prey with a kiss. Molina forms an unlikely bond with his cellmate, a Marxist, Valentin Arregui Paz (Luna).
“It’s a very special musical,” Lopez told Variety in May.

2-time Oscar winner Marlon Brando had a historic run 70 years ago that has yet to be matched or replicated. Some of Marlon Brando's best movies came out of Hollywood's Golden Age, which took place from the late 1910s until the early 1960s. Although many of Brando's most prolific roles would arise in the 1970s in Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather and Apocalypse Now, his performances as a leading man were just as impressive at the start of his acting career during the early 1950s.
Brando remains one of the few actors in Oscars history to win the Academy Award for Best Actor twice in his career. He is cemented among other great actors such as Jack Nicholson, Dustin Hoffman, Tom Hanks, Sean Penn, and Anthony Hopkins. Broadway will honor the late actor Adrian Bailey, who died September 22 at the age of 67 following an at-home fall, by dimming the marquee lights of one theater from every theater owner on October 17.
“Over the years, Mr. Bailey has served as an inspiration not only due to his talented performances on Broadway and Touring Broadway stages, but also through his perseverance, positive attitude, and indomitable spirit,” said Jason Laks, Interim President of The Broadway League. “The outpouring of love from our community is a testament to that spirit. In losing Adrian Bailey, we have truly lost a bright light both on and off Broadway, and our thoughts are with his family, friends, former colleagues, and all who loved him best.”
Bailey appeared in 15 Broadway productions, including his heralded 1976 debut in Your Arms Too Short to Box With God, before a tragic onstage accident in 2008 ended his performing career. Appearing in...

A film about Hulk Hogan’s infamous legal battle against Gawker is officially in the works.
Artists Equity, Matt Damon and Ben Affleck’s production banner, has acquired a screenplay written by Charles Randolph and based on Ryan Holiday’s book “Conspiracy: Peter Thiel, Hulk Hogan, Gawker and the Anatomy of Intrigue.” The project, titled “Killing Gawker,” is in active development.
Gus Van Sant, who previously helmed Affleck and Damon’s “Good Will Hunting,” is set to direct. While it’s been rumored that Affleck will take on the role of the controversial wrestler, no casting has been announced at this time.
In March 2016, Hogan won a $140 million judgement against Gawker Media, its founder Nick Denton and one of its editors. The verdict was the result of a lawsuit over Gawker’s publication of a sex tape featuring Hogan, but was funded by divisive Silicon Valley businessman Peter Thiel in...

The Devil Wears Prada musical has revealed a stunning first social media glimpse of Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly.
The musical began preview performances at the Theatre Royal Plymouth in London July 6. It will run through August 17, prior to opening at West End’s Dominion Theatre in October.
If the promo is any indication, Williams seems to be an almost satanic version of the fashion magazine mogul first brought to life on film 18 years ago by Meryl Streep.
The clip starts with Williams popping up, as the screen announces, “Miranda has arrived.”
The star wearing a red sequin gown and a matching duster jacket. She quickly flashes her coat open to give a full-body look at the striking outfit.
The musical, which features an original score by Elton John, is derived from Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel and the successful 2006 film, which earned $326.7 million globally against a budget of $35-41 million...

On April 5th, 20th Century Studios gave a theatrical release to The First Omen, which serves as a prequel to the 1976 horror classic The Omen (watch it Here) – and the movie was surprisingly well-received, with JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray giving it an 8/10 review and Tyler Nichols writing an article about why it works so well. The movie hasn’t been burning up the box office charts; made on a budget of $30 million, it has only pulled in $36 million so far. But if a sequel were to get the greenlight, director Arkasha Stevenson knows one subject she would want to cover in the follow-up: the mystery of the jackal.
In the original The Omen, we were told that the Antichrist was born of a jackal. The First Omen digs deeper into his parentage, letting us know that it wasn’t quite as simple (although very strange) as it appeared to be in the original movie,...

Avengers: Endgame broke records with its Oscar-winning cast of 7, an achievement unmatched in the MCU. The movie deserves to keep this record, as it capped off a decade of interconnected Marvel stories. The star-studded cast highlighted the end of an era in the MCU, with many characters making their final appearances.
Avengers: Endgame holds a litany of records, and there is one in particular that the MCU will never break. The penultimate movie of the Infinity Saga drew a line beneath more than a decade's worth of interconnected stories and earned the accolade of becoming the highest-grossing Marvel movie. Its financial success is no surprise given that it marked the culmination of these stories, especially those of MCU royalty like Robert Downey Jr.'s Iron Man and Chris Evans' Captain America. Yet the sheer amount of star power within the movie can't be overlooked.

20th Century Studios’ The First Omen is a true prequel to The Omen, arriving almost fifty years after the Richard Donner-directed horror classic introduced Antichrist Damien Thorn and terrified audiences. The film’s legacy is front and center in an exclusive new featurette.
First released in 1976, The Omen stars Gregory Peck as affluent diplomat Robert Thorn. It begins on June 6, at 6 am in Rome, where Robert Thorn learns his newborn has died, and the Church convinces him to accept an orphaned infant in its place. Robert’s wife, Kathy (Lee Remick), is none the wiser.
As the child, Damien, turns five, it coincides with a wave of strange happenings and coincidences that leads Robert down a harrowing journey where he’ll discover his adoptive son may be the Antichrist.

That’s a rating the filmmakers really had to fight for, as director Arkasha Stevenson revealed to Fangoria that there’s a birthing scene that nearly earned the film an Nc-17 rating – mainly because it featured a thirteen second shot of a woman’s vagina. That shot had to be whittled down to secure the R.
Stevenson said, “The horror in that situation is how dehumanized that woman is. This has been my life for a year and a half, fighting for the shot. It’s the theme of our film.
