Dave Bautista said his In the Lost Lands character is inspired by Clint Eastwood’s Westerns. Eastwood starred in a handful of genre films before the Dollars Trilogy, where he played his career's most iconic role.
In the Lost Lands cast Dave Bautista in a uniquely familiar role. He plays Boyce, a hunter who joins a witch in her search for a magical gift that would transform their queen to a werewolf. That premise screams adventure fantasy, but Bautista’s character has all the earmarks of a Spaghetti Western cowboy. The actor confirmed this with DiscussingFilm, describing the movie as a “Western stuck in a fantasy world”. He knew he was onboard after reading the opening narration. “I’d been looking to play a cowboy, and all day long I was just thinking ‘Clint Eastwood, what would Clint Eastwood do?’” he explained.

Geena Davis has had a four-decade career in film and television, and it all began because of the comic way she filled out a pair of underwear in the classic comedy “Tootsie.” Davis was an aspiring model and actress when director Sydney Pollack cast her and she drew huge laughs as Dustin Hoffman’s dressing room mate who doesn’t know he is really a man. She thereby exercises and walks around the dressing room in just a bra and panties causing Hoffman’s character great discomfort.
Davis then turned to television in the cult hit sitcom “Buffalo Bill” for which she even wrote an episode. While beloved by critics and award shows the dark show never found its audience and was cancelled shortly into its run. Davis was then cast as the lead in a sitcom named “Sara” which was supposed to make her the next Mary Tyler Moore.

2024 saw DC Comics yet again trot out "Watchmen," this time as a two-part animated film. First debuting in 1986, "Watchmen" is the beloved superhero murder mystery comic created by writer Alan Moore (who infamously has no interest in any "Watchmen" adaptations) and artist Dave Gibbons. It's also the one superhero comic that it's broadly acceptable for literary critics to enjoy -- so much so it spawned a new term for the comic medium: "graphic novel."
The term goes back a bit further, such as the Marvel Graphic Novel line (begun in 1982). These longer (and more expensive) than usual comic issues told a standalone story. They also tended to be darker than contemporary Marvel comics. Take the "X2" inspiration "X-Men: God Loves, Man Kills" (by Chris Claremont and Brent Anderson) where the X-Men battled a televangelist and religious bigotry, and "The Death of Captain Marvel" (by Jim Starlin), where the cosmic hero succumbed to cancer.

Since rising to the status of A-list Hollywood icon after starring in Sergio Leone's Dollars Trilogy, Clint Eastwood has been the face of the Western genre. Taking over from an aging John Wayne, he cemented that status throughout the 1970s, thanks to films like High Plains Drifter, Hang 'Em High and Two Mules For Sister Sara. Throughout his career, Eastwood has both starred in and directed some of the greatest revisionist Westerns of all time, a sub-genre he basically perfected.
Eastwood's Western movies range from the supernatural to morally-complex character studies, exploring the violence and potential of life in the Old West. Ranging from action-heavy shootouts to explorations of the turmoil of the West, the actor's films also boast a variety of brilliant scenes. Thanks to his strong screen presence to his distinguished appearance, few stars have as many great scenes under their belt as Eastwood.

What Would You Do? is returning for its 17th season. As seen in the trailer, John Quiñones is back as the series’ host. Sara Haines also returns as a correspondent as the two travel around the country for the show.
Quiñones Certainly Knows How To Make An Entrance
The series is something of a social experiment, collecting the reactions of strangers as they come across some sort of conflict in public. Not realizing the whole thing is staged, their reactions are then caught on camera. The series originally appeared on ABC’s Primetime before getting its own first season.
The trailer shows host John Quiñones making all sorts of entrances, even appearing out of limousines and helicopters, before he asks people caught on camera the show’s title question. This season, experiments have been filmed in Colorado, New Jersey, Nevada, and New York.

Writer Garth Ennis and artist Darick Robertson created comic book series "The Boys" to satirize how their industry was ruled by corporate greed. The lifeblood of that greed? Superhero funny books (a genre Ennis has never liked). In 2019, "The Boys" leaped to television, with its thesis rejiggered around the oversaturation of superhero movies.
"The Boys" is one of the most popular Prime Video shows streaming (though that won't stop it coming to an end with season 5). Thanks to the TV adaptation, "The Boys" is currently the most talked-about Ennis comic, even if the show does take plenty of liberties with its source material. ("The Boys" TV show creator Eric Kripke told /Film he regularly consults with Ennis and Robertson.)
Ennis' body of work has running themes: vulgarity and violence; distaste for power whether it be political, corporate or religious; resolute warrior men who destroy themselves etc. Ennis is a leftie but also an edgelord,...

It may not be easy to stream these days, but whether you've seen it or not, "Maude" remains an important cornerstone of the sitcom house Norman Lear built. Premiering in 1972, "Maude" was originally conceived as a spinoff to the ever-in-the-zeitgeist sitcom "All in the Family," but it soon took on a life of its own. The show starred a pre-"Golden Girls" Bea Arthur as Maude Findlay, an outspoken, well-to-do liberal feminist with a knack for telling everyone around her what's what.
Maude was also a middle-aged woman, a reality that was never more apparent than in the show's most famous, controversial episode. The 1972 two-parter "Maude's Dilemma" saw Maude contemplate –- and ultimately choose –- abortion after finding herself pregnant in her late '40s. Released before the establishment of Roe vs. Wade, "Maude's Dilemma" was a lightning rod for heated conversations about reproductive rights, and remains an enduring part of the show's legacy today.

Sanfic Industria, the industry section of the Santiago International Film Festival running over August 18-25, is showcasing a slew of promising new fiction and non-fiction projects at its Santiago Labs. “We were overwhelmed by the number of entries this year, a 55% uptick from 2023,” said Sanfic Industria director Gabriela Sandoval, a co-founder of the festival.

It's not news that, for the most part, superhero movies haven't made audiences into regular comic book readers despite publisher efforts. If anything, it feels like the problems that have plagued the superhero comic duopoly are seeping over into Marvel Studios' blockbuster behemoth.
Some critics have gone so far as to say comics will never be the primary medium for superheroes again. Ritesh Babu writes, "To entire generations of children, the superhero is an entity of the screen, not the comics page." I'll admit, I'm proof positive of this hypothesis. I first met superheroes through movies, cartoons, and franchise encyclopedias with years of comic story bullet points and trivia all contained in one binding. (Such tomes are useful at convincing young fans that superhero stories are a historied mythology to be revered.)

Garth Ennis, the writer behind "The Boys" and "Preacher," has been called the Quentin Tarantino of comic books. On the surface, both men tell stories filled with violence, profane dialogue, crass comedy, and their fans love them for it. I've adored Tarantino since I first encountered him — no movie, from "Reservoir Dogs" to his latest (and favorite of his own films) "Once Upon A Time In Hollywood" — has broken that spell. My feelings on Ennis are more of a journey; I dismissed him in my younger days but I've since settled on the more positive side.
The comic that got me to give Ennis a second look is his 2018 war mini-series, "Sara" (drawn by Steve Epting and colored by Elizabeth Breitweiser). Ennis grew up reading war comics and now he writes them quite well.

Comicbook writer Garth Ennis, best known for series such as “Preacher” and “The Boys,” and his nine-year stint at Marvel, is a guest of this week’s Lucca Comics & Games. Ennis, whose current work includes comedy Barbarian strip “Babs,” and the latest instalments of the “Battle Action” and “Punisher” series, spoke about his new book “Partisan,” as well as diverse topics including religion and war.
“[In ‘Partisan’], Steve [Epting] and I explored a similar territory to that of ‘Sara.’ It’s about a woman who finds herself caught in the fighting between Russian partisans and the German invaders in Ukraine from 1942 onwards,” Ennis said.
“Our heroine, with her husband having been called up by the army, finds herself raising two kids alone. Caught in this conflict, she joins the partisans for no other reason than keeping her kids alive. She finds herself doing the most extreme things, purely in the interest of her family.

It’s no exaggeration to say that Korea’s Busan International Film Festival (Biff) has been through a fair amount of drama this year.
The turmoil started in May when Biff chairman Lee Yong-kwan appointed a close associate, Cho Jongkook, as managing director alongside artistic director Huh Moonyung, a decision that proved highly unpopular with some sectors of the local Korean film industry.
Huh resigned, and in an apparently unrelated development, was accused of sexual harassment by a festival employee around the same time. Lee also resigned, Cho was dismissed by the Biff board, and Oh Seok-geun, director of Busan’s Asian Contents & Film Market (Acfm), who had supported Lee’s decision to hire Cho, also stepped down. By early July, four of the festival’s top management were out of the door.

Two personal, stylish, and distinctive films celebrate major birthdays this month: “Risky Business” turned 40 August 5 and August 1 marked the 50th anniversary of the release of “American Graffiti.”
Two other personal, stylish, and distinctive films also celebrate their blockbuster success this August: “Barbie,” which is now $1 billion worldwide and counting, and “Oppenheimer,” which just crossed $600 million.
August is generally known for providing the dog days of summer box office. It’s the end of the road, kids are going back to school. There’s no time for a blockbuster to stretch its legs and no one’s in the mood for anything weighty. The current studio release calendar bears out that logic with “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem,” “The Last Voyage of the Demeter,” “Gran Turismo,” “Blue Beetle,” and “Strays.”

The Old West was just as populated by strong females as men as seen in the Two Sinners and a Mule trailer. The film stars Chantelle Albers and Hannah James as courtesans Alice and Nora who find themselves driven out of their town by the religious locals and stumble across wounded bounty hunter Elden Gallup, who they nurse back to health in exchange for splitting the bounty on a murderous bandit. Alongside Albers and James, the cast for Two Sinners and a Mule includes Cam Gigadent, Buck Taylor, Cord Newman, David Midthunder, and Luce Rains.

The origin of this project goes as far back in our women's collective memory to the time in the late 80s when Janet Grillo was head of Acquisitions for New Line Cinema and Sara Risher was head of production. I was buying features for Lorimar or Republic Pictures. We did not know at that time that one day, after Janet had completed her directorial debut, the lovely and loving film "Fly Away," that Sara would tell a certain writer-producer. to show her script to Janet as a possible director.
Janet liked it and together they developed it further at L.A. Film Independent. They then won the PGA Script Award. They hired an 18-year-old who had been a child actress and was a Nyu Freshman just finishing a TV Career. She agreed to star in January and the film was shot the following May 2014.
It premiered in Geena Davis’ Inaugural 2015 Bentonville Film Festival in May 2015 where it won the Jury Geena Davis’ new effort to celebrate the work of women and diverse voices in media also is the only festival to guarantee distribution for its winners’ project.
“The goal of the festival is not just to showcase women and diversity—it’s to really have a proactive and powerful effect on the industry,” says Davis, Bff co-founder and founder and chair of the nonprofit Geena Davis Institute on Gender in Media. “We’re intent on being extremely proactive in showing the films that include women and that are very commercial. Our goal is to show that this is the direction in which things are heading and we should get there sooner.”
"Jack of the Red Hearts” has now arrived in theaters nationwide as of February 26, 2016. "Jack of the Red Hearts”. In conjunction with Broad Focus, Lifetime, the Genna Davis Institute on Gender in Media and the Bentonville Film Festival, the Q&A, moderated by the Wrap’s Sharon Waxman, will begin immediately followed the 7pm screening.

Bentonville’s strong affiliation with Walmart, the only vendor and the largest still selling DVDs will release it in its stores and on its VOD site.
Anna Sophia Robb portrays “Jack,” a tough teenage runaway on the lam from her parole officer. The conniving street kid brazenly impersonates a trained caregiver and forms a unique bond with an 11 year-old autistic girl named Glory, brilliantly played by newcomer Taylor Richardson. Famke Janssen, as the child's desperate mother Kay, also bonds with the imposter, as a surrogate daughter she can actually talk to. And the girl’s cute older brother Robert (Israel Broussard) falls in love. When the deception is exposed and the cops descend, loving father Mark (Scott Cohen) struggles to hold his family together as the pieces of this puzzle are reshuffled into a new, satisfying whole.
"Jack of the Red Hearts” is directed by Janet Grillo (writer/director of “Fly Away” and executive producer of Emmy®-winning “Autism: The Musical”) and written by Jennifer Deaton. Both have strong ties to the autism community as Grillo is mother to a child on the autism spectrum and Deaton is aunt to a child on the spectrum. The producers are Stefan Nowicki, Joey Carey, Lucy Mukerjee-Brown, and Morgan White.
The film stars AnnaSophia Robb (“The Carrie Diaries,” “Soul Surfer”), Famke Janssen (“X-Men”), Scott Cohen (“One Life to Live”), Taylor Richardson (“Annie”), Israel Broussard (“The Bling Ring”) and John D’Leo (“Unbroken”).

It is not too shabby in what the Northeast (New England) part of the United States has produced in terms of past and present actors/actresses making their show business dreams come true. Film careers can be a lot like ice cubes–they start out solid and cool but if you sit around in stagnation your efforts and hard work can melt away before one’s very eyes. Certainly no one can accuse this talented crop of thespians of being one-hit wonders on the big screen. After all, one does not become a recipient of an Academy Award by just sheer luck and charitable fortune.
As a native Bostonian and life long New Englander, I felt compelled to spotlight those Massachusetts-born and bred actors from the same region that had ultimate success on the big screen in winning the Oscar for their acting achievement and contribution to the motion picture industry.

On the BBC America drama series Copper, set in 1865 New York City, actor Ato Essandoh plays Doctor Matthew Freeman, an African-American physician who served in the war with Robert Morehouse (Kyle Schmid) and Detective Kevin Corcoran (Tom Weston-Jones). Freeman always seems torn between his calling as a physician and his devotion to his wife Sara (Tessa Thompson). During this exclusive phone interview with Collider, actor Ato Essandoh (who also plays Alfredo Llamosa on Elementary) talked about the differences between Season 1 and Season 2, finding the voice for his character, how 1865 has changed things for Dr. Freeman, how deep he delves into the actual history of the time period, what it was like to shoot the emotional scene where they knock down the lamppost, what it was like to add Alfre Woodard to the mix, how unexpected things turn out, and how he can’t wait to get rid of the beard...

Maggie is a film student who has dutifully recorded her nightmares. She sees the same image – a hairy hippie with a dagger, a trussed maiden on an alter, and a terrified child fleeing through flames. She and her fellow film students prepare for a fundraising “horrorthon” at an abandoned theater called Dreamland, and the others begin fading to black…one by one. Maggie comes to the realization that the killer is Lanyard Gates, the crazed filmmaker responsible for The Possessor, a 60′s cult film that reminds her of the image she sees in her dreams. Gates killed his family on stage at the same theater 15 years earlier.

Has it been a decade of films and freaks already? Well, it has! The 10th annual Coney Island Film Festival is set to run once again on Sept. 24-26 at the world famous Sideshows by the Seashore — the last operating circus-style sideshow/freak show in the U.S.A.
The festival starts with real bang this year with the Brooklyn premiere of Gary Beeber‘s latest documentary Dirty Martini and the New Burlesque, which chronicles the rise of the hot new burlesque trend in NYC and its most popular star, Dirty Martini. The film will also be preceded by two short films: The recently uncovered Museum of Wax by playwright Charles Ludlam and Jaye Cherian’s documentary Shape of the Shapeless.
This year the festival is also celebrating by hosting director Darren Aronofsky as their 2010 honoree. On Sept. 26, Aronofsky — who was born in South Brooklyn — will be present at a...

People like to cast Alfre Woodard as a woman of power, but why can't she keep it? After the disappointments known as NBC's My Own Worst Enemy and CBS' Three Rivers, Woodard is heading to cable in the TNT pilot Delta Blues, exec produced by George Clooney. According to The Hollywood Reporter, she'll play a new police lieutenant who tries to rein in a Memphis cop (Jason Lee) who lives with his mother and moonlights as an Elvis impersonator. The good news: If the show gets picked up, TNT should let it play out its first season no matter what.

When we got got word that Bleacher Report posted a "20 Hottest Sports Movie Babes" list, our first thought was, "Wait, are there really 20 movies about female athletes?" Alas, no.
Bleacher Report's list definitely includes some sports-playing actresses/characters, but at least half of it is comprised of women whose role was to seduce male athletes from the sidelines. So, we decided to make our own "10 Hottest Sports Movie Babes" list. At the very least our list includes women in their uniforms. Bleacher Report only included uniform pictures if the women were in bikinis.
10) Tami Maida (Helen Hunt), Quarterback Princess: "What bothers you? That I'm a lady or that I'm a quarterback?"
9) Anne Marie Chadwick (Kate Bosworth), Blue Crush: "I want a girl to be on the cover of Surf magazine. It would be great if that girl were me, but any girl would do."
8) Sara (Julie Stiles), Save the Last Dance: "That's Ok,...

It's all here in this week's addition of On DVD and Blu-ray... Enjoy! Body of Lies Just yesterday I posted my Blu-ray review of Body of Lies, which is an impressive release in high definition on top of the fact I think it is also a good movie and definitely one to consider picking up this week and certainly the best new release in terms of non-catalog titles. I don't have a copy of the DVD edition, but if you are a Blu-ray owner you could do a lot worse than this release.

Slumdog Millionaire continued its winning streak this awards season, with Simon Beaufoy winning the 2009 Writers Guild of America award this evening for adapted screenplay. Dustin Lance Black won the award for best original screenplay for Milk. Slumdog has already won DGA, SAG, PGA and Golden Globe awards, and is a multi-award favorite for the Oscars. Milk has won SAG and PGA awards and is also a strong Oscar contender in multiple categories.
On the television side, awards went to the writers of Mad Men (drama), 30 Rock (comedy), Recount and John Adams in long-form categories, and In Treatment, Breaking Bad, and The Simpsons in various other fields. Controversially, among other awards was one for videogame writing (to Star Wars: The Force Unleashed). Some publishers declined to submit their titles for consideration, viewing the award as primarily an organizing tool for a guild seeking to gain a foothold in a non-unionized sector.
