Disappointed by the way Gatchaman, le combat des galaxies (1972) was turned into La bataille des planètes (1978), Carl Macek wanted to import an anime series and have it faithfully translated for the Western market. The best series he could obtain, Choujikuu Yousai Macross (1982), had only 36 episodes, far too few for the standard 65-episode syndication package the North American TV market demanded. Macek decided to acquire two similarly-themed series, Chôjikû kidan Sazan Kurosu (1984) and Kikô sôseiki Mospeada (1983), and connected them as a grand epic of successive generations forced to fight three wars over an alien energy source.

Alternate versions
The remastered Robotech DVDs restores some of the nudity and violence that was deleted from the original broadcast run.

one of the few greats

I have sat and watched the first robotech (macross) edition many times. I used to rush home after school just to watch it when it first aired in South Africa. I was amazed at the animation and the (in my opinion) depth of the characters, i also enjoyed the way the characters grew and evolved as the series progressed. I have recently managed to watch all the 2nd series episodes (robotech masters) and have started watching the third series. I was just as enthralled to sit and watch the characters evolve and their lives play out in the series.

I have bought the DVDS of robotech and intend to introduce my kids (if i have any) to the magic that is robotech. If you love animated films/manga then i would recommend that you watch the robotech series.
