Hasbro have been desperate for years to turn their most lucrative toy lines into blockbuster movie franchises, and the results have been less than stellar so far. Michael Bay’s Transformers series may have raked in close to $4.5 billion at the box office, but the quality seemed to get progressively worse with each subsequent sequel, not to mention takings dropping by $500 million between Age of Extinction and The Last Knight.
Competing scripts were commissioned earlier this year for a new entry, one a straightforward reboot written by Joby Harold and the other a Beast Wars adaptation to be scripted by James Vanderbilt. It’s the former that seems to be moving quicker, though, with Creed II‘s Steven Caple Jr. hired to direct earlier this week.
Not only that, but insider Mikey Sutton is now claiming that this is the start of the Hasbro Cinematic Universe taking shape, with How to Train Your Dragon...

The 1980s cartoon favorite finds a new streaming home!
“Thunder….Thunder….ThunderCats! Hooooooooooooo!”
If just hearing those words gave you a Pavlovian impulse to grab a Rubik’s cube and some bagel bites, you are not alone. Although never as popular as a say G.I. Joe or a Jem, ThunderCats was another successful cartoon series based on a popular toy line — in this case one in which alien felines squared off against an evil mummy. Because 1980s, awesome.
Debuting in syndication in 1985 and usually scheduled in after school time slots alongside shows like He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, Transformers, M.A.S.K. and, er, Heathcliff, the show’s initial run spawned 130 episodes of feline inter-spacial conflict. In it the wake of the show’s immediate popularity came the success of not only the Ljn toy line that kicked the whole saga off but ancillary products like comics and clothes,...

Bad Boys for Life screenwriter Chris Bremner has been hired to script the upcoming film M.A.S.K., based on the popular toy line from the 1980s. As reported by THR, the film is another joint production between Paramount and Hasbro, who have enjoyed billions of dollars of success with the Transformers franchise. Paramount has tapped Bad Boys for Life co-writer Chris Bremner to write their upcoming M.A.S.K. movie. The Fate of the Furious and Straight Outta Compton director F. Gary Gray has been attached to helm the project for nearly two years now. It is believed Gray will still direct the long-awaited movie, though no production start has been revealed. Gray is also on board as a producer for the movie, which is based on the iconic 1980s cartoon and toy line.
M.A.S.K. stands for Mobile Armored Strike Kommand and was launched as a cartoon series and toy line in 1985. A live-action movie has been in development for years now and for a while, it looked like it had been placed on the backburner. However, now that Chris Bremner has been brought on, it appears that Hasbro and Paramount are ready to finally move forward with the project. It's unclear what direction Bremner will take the story,...

Want a quality action film, but you only have an hour and a half? Step this way...
Looking back over the genre, action films definitely haven’t suffered from the trend to make everything longer. They’ve always been pretty long, regularly clocking in at over two hours. Perhaps because of all the slo-mo? But while the sweet spot for action classics seems to be the 100-110 minute mark, there are those that have cut the genre right down to basics, and succeeded all the more for it.
Below is my pick of 25 great action films 90 minutes or under. Even more so than other genres, action crosses many other films - picking a pure ‘action’ flick is all but impossible. So below I’ve chosen films that retain action sequences as their main narrative device, and keep the action at the heart of the movie, rather than as a extra.
