Here’s what we know for sure: The project is being put together by lead producers Eric Robinson and Ellen Goldsmith-Vein of The Gotham Group, and they’ve got Springsteen and his manager producer Jon Landau involved in its development.

They’ve also brought Scott Stuber aboard as a producer, making the Bruce film his first project as a producer since he announced his exit as Netflix’s longtime film chief.

Beyond that, details are still being worked out and deals still need to be put in place. But another source says A24’s involvement is in talks stage. Scott Cooper, the “Crazy Heart” filmmaker, is also in talks to write the script and would direct.

Celebrated Malaysian-Taiwanese director Tsai Ming-liang sat down with Variety on the eve of receiving the Locarno Film Festival Career Award. The award is only the latest in a series of prizes from major European festivals the art-house maverick has received – from the 1994 Golden Lion from Venice for “Vive L’Amour” to the Silver Bear that “The River” won in Berlin in 1997.

So how does he feel to have received this latest sign of esteem from the film community?

“This is very special for me,” Tsai says. “I’m very happy, especially for my films which are not easy to see. Coming here and receiving a reward is a very big encouragement for me. Especially these festivals. They saw that I had embarked on a different way of creation. So here they gave me a space to show my short films.”

Julian Barry, Oscar-nominated screenwriter of the 1974 Lenny Bruce biopic “Lenny” starring Dustin Hoffman, has died at the age of 92, his daughter announced to The New York Times.

Born in the Bronx and a graduate of Syracuse, Barry got his start in showbiz on Broadway as an actor and stage manager, most notably in Orson Welles’ 1955 production of Shakespeare’s “King Lear.”

In 1969, Columbia Pictures approached Barry about writing a biopic about the life of stand-up comedian Lenny Bruce, who had died of a morphine overdose three years prior. Bruce accepted, but the project fell through as Columbia fast-tracked other projects.

Not wanting to give up on the script, Barry repurposed it as a stage play and brought it to Broadway in 1971 with “Hair” director Tom O’Horgan and with Cliff Gorman as Lenny Bruce. The play “Lenny” was a success, with Gorman winning a Tony Award for for his performance.

Julian Barry, whose 1971 Broadway play and 1974 movie, both titled Lenny and telling the story of legendary comic Lenny Bruce, died Tuesday at his home in Beverly Hills. He was 92.

His death was reported to The New York Times by his daughter Julia Barry, who said he died in his sleep and had been under medical care for congestive heart failure and late-stage kidney disease.

Although most widely known for his highly influential Bruce projects, which earned considerable acclaim for the writer and his title stars — Cliff Gorman on stage, Dustin Hoffman on screen — Barry’s career extended to other projects that caught the public’s attention in their day. He wrote Rhinoceros, the 1974 film adaptation of Eugène Ionesco’s play starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel, a movie that has grown somewhat in esteem since its initial critical dismissal, and the 1978 Faye Dunaway vehicle Eyes of Laura Mars, which has not.

Chinese director Wei Shujun has just premiered his third film, neo-noir thriller Only The River Flows, in Cannes Un Certain Regard to positive reviews.

While he’s now had three features selected for the festival, this is the first time he’s been able to walk the red carpet in person, at least with a full-length film.

His debut, semi-autobiographical drama Striding Into The Wind, was selected in 2020, the year that Cannes didn’t take place but still presented an Official Selection. Director Mike Newell has set an August shoot at U.K. locations for “China Court.”

The film will be directed by Newell from a script by Brian Kinsey, based on the 1961 novel “China Court: The Hours of a Country House” by Rumer Godden.

The film centers around a house, China Court, and the family that inhabits it. The film follows generations of the family over a century, up to the death of the matriarch in 1961. Characters move seamlessly in and out of each other’s timelines as they grow up, fall in love, fall out with each other and – always – pass on to those who follow them the consequences of their actions.

“White Noise” producer Uri Singer has joined forces with Echo Lake’s Mike Marcus (“The Ward”) and U.K.-based Pippa Cross to produce the film.

Fortitude International’s Nadine de Barros and Singer’s Passage Pictures are financing the film.

REinvent, the banner launched by TrustNordisk’s former CEO Rikke Ennis, has come on board “Outlier,” a female-led crime thriller set in Arctic wilderness amid the Sami community.

The eight-part series was created by Arne Berggren, the award-winning Norwegian novelist, playwright and rock musician, and Kristine Berg, the duo behind “The River” (“Elven), “The Dead Ones,” “Maria” and “Hotel Caesar,” Scandinavia’s longest running melodrama series.

REinvent will kick off pre-sales for “Outlier” at the Cannes virtual market with a teaser. The series, which is lensing in English, Norwegian and Sami, is expected to be delivered in September.

The latest release in Bruce Springsteen’s ongoing live download series is a show he played with the E Street Band at Long Island, New York’s Nassau Coliseum on May 4th, 2009. This was the first leg of the Working on a Dream tour and it features many live rarities including “Kingdom of Days,” “Rendezvous,” “The Wrestler” and a cover of the 1967 Soul Survivors classic “Expressway to Your Heart.” The show marks the only time Springsteen has ever played it live.
