There have been countless horror remakes in movie history, yet some, surprisingly, actually improve on the original in almost every way.
Horror movie fans are long used to remakes and how the majority of them are, frankly, terrible. Some have dared to remake classics like Psycho, Friday the 13th, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, only to remind fans why some films just can’t be replicated. On the other hand, some aren’t too bad, mostly remaking already poor films, and are watchable.
But now and then, a horror remake not only honors the original but outdoes it. It helps if the original was from decades ago, and the...

AMC Theatres is trying a new tactic to keep horror fatigue at bay at the fall box office as Halloween approaches.
The country’s largest theater circuit on Sept. 5 announced the launch of the “AMC Slash Pass,” a new limited-time ticketing program that coincides with a crowded line-up of genre films getting ready to unfurl between now and the end of the year.
AMC timed its news to the opening of this weekend’s The Conjuring: Last Rites. (The latest Conjuring installment doesn’t appear to need any help, and is on course for a record-shattering domestic opening of $65 million or more.)
For $66.66, the Slash Pass provides moviegoers with six admissions to use on participating horror films at AMC Theatres locations nationwide.
Through the end of 2025, guests may redeem their six admissions across multiple participating titles, or bring five friends and apply all six admissions to the same participating film,...

Fans of game shows will be intrigued by Your Host, a gameshow-themed horror film which just received its UK premiere at FrightFest. The film notably stars Hollywood actor Jackie Earle Haley, in a role which he is already being widely praised for.

Haley received a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination for his role in Little Children, and he also played Rorschach in Watchmen and Freddy Krueger in the remake of A Nightmare on Elm Street, in addition to appearing in films such as Shutter Island and Lincoln. When it comes to horror movies, there’s not much debate—at least not around here—about what the best decade for the genre was: the blood-soaked, terror-filled 1980s! Just think about it: The Shining, A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, The Fly, The Evil Dead, Hellraiser, The Thing, and so many more. Why did the decade rule so hard? We’re diving deep into it on JoBlo Horror with our series, 80s Horror Memories– which starts tomorrow! Check out the trailer above!

The Grabber is back for more! Universal Pictures and Blumhouse have reunited for "Black Phone 2," which will once again feature Ethan Hawke as the terrifying, child-killing, mask-wearing villain. "The Black Phone" director Scott Derrickson has also returned, as has his writing partner C. Robert Cargill, for what looks to be a bigger and wilder horror sequel -- one that appears to be taking its cues from the (in a certain sense) scariest movie ever made.
As we learned from the previous "Black Phone 2" trailer, The Grabber is going full Freddy Krueger in this movie, attacking kids in their dreams à la "A Nightmare on Elm Street." However, the...

With our first look at Black Phone 2, the definite-article-free sequel to The Black Phone, we got confirmation of a strong premise for Scott Derrickson’s follow-up: since serial killer The Grabber (Ethan Hawke) was killed at the end of that film, and the black phone in his basement destroyed, this time he returns from beyond the grave to wreak Freddy Krueger-style revenge. Now, with the film's release not too far away, we have another trailer teasing more mayhem for youngsters Finny and Gwen (Mason Thames and Madeleine McGraw) as they realise their nightmare isn’t over. Check it out:

"It took me a long time... but you of all people know 'dead' is just a word." Universal has unveiled the scary second trailer for the highly anticipated sequel Black Phone 2, the horror follow-up to C. Robert Cargill & Scott Derrickson's film The Black Phone which opened 2022. This one will land in theaters starting in this middle of October during the spooky season. The story of the masked man ain't over yet. 4 years ago, 13-year-old Finn killed his abductor & escaped, now the sole survivor of The Grabber. But true evil transcends death... and the phone is ringing again. Will you answer? Following the blockbuster success of Blumhouse’s 2022 horror hit,...

Ethan Hawke always puts his all into whatever movie he’s doing, so it was interesting to see him portray The Grabber, a particularly evil bastard who abducts and kills children. But I’m not sure any of us expected the film to go the franchise route, and that’s precisely what they’re doing. Despite him being killed off in the first film we’ve got him back for round 2. And this time, he’s got a particularly supernatural bend to him. I suppose if any series is going to go that route, the one where a killer’s victims are still accessible via telephone line is prime for it.

The 21st century may have seen the attempted rebirth of iconic horror franchises like “Halloween,” “A Nightmare on Elm Street,” “Friday the 13th,” and “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” but the most effective work of serialized terror has been the extended universe of “The Conjuring.” Although director James Wan had proven himself a bold new voice in the genre with “Saw,” “The Conjuring” tapped into a fascinating true story and used it as a launching pad to explore various stories of possessions, demons, and hauntings. While Ed (Patrick Wilson) and Lorraine Warren (Vera Farmiga) remain the protagonists of the core series, “The Conjuring” has developed into an interconnected saga, inspiring multiple spinoff projects.

I’ll be honest, I was hoping for a slasher involving a cyclist (a description of a film I have actually seen before but completely forgotten the name of). Death Cycle involves a motorcyclist, for me, not quite as much fun. We start by witnessing the brutal murder of a woman alongside her sister, who survives. This woman is then visited by a man looking to solve a series of murders by a person driving a motorcycle. The killer continues, and we are left guessing who the murderer is.

Thanks to the success and popularity of slasher classics like Friday the 13th, Halloween, and A Nightmare on Elm Street, an ’80s wave of eager imitators emerged in their wake. Unashamedly pulling from the same playbook, many played out like Bizarro World replicas, altering masks and motives, but retaining many of the general story beats. Even though many failed to reach the same status as their inspiration (Friday the 13th being the most notable exception), some flipped the script just enough to carve out their own place in horror history and the hearts of horror fans, including Quentin Tarantino’s.
An open and avid fan of the genre, Tarantino never shies away from an opportunity to highlight an underappreciated cinematic nugget that he feels deserves more eyeballs on it. The ‘80s were an epic time for horror fans. So many iconic efforts made their mark during that exemplary decade. A Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th, Poltergeist, and The Lost Boys all released in the ‘80s, and that’s to say nothing of the noteworthy lycanthropic efforts released during that time period.
As for werewolf pictures, we had quite a few standout efforts from that subgenre released throughout the decade as well. There was the game-changing An American Werewolf in London, the heartfelt Stephen King adaptation Silver Bullet, and the delightfully quirky horror comedy Teen Wolf. Not to mention, the great Joe Dante also debuted a standout effort that remains a staple of lycanthrope cinema to this day.
I’m talking, of course, about The Howling. Dante’s werewolf picture is smart, surreal, intense, and features exceptional transformation sequences that look just as good today as they did...

This week's episode of the Empire Podcast will haunt your nightmares (but in a good way) as Chris Hewitt returns to the host chair just in time to tackle a Mount Rushmore question about the best Final Girls in horror movies with Beth Webb and Amon Warmann. Their final choices may shock you, but that's nothing compared to the bit where Chris finds himself explaining Freddy Krueger to Amon, who has never seen a Nightmare On Elm Street movie. Terrifying stuff!
Elsewhere in the show, our intrepid trio also discuss the week's movie news, and review Celine Song's Materialists, Nobody 2, and Together, the horror movie in which Dave Franco and Alison Brie literally fuse together. Which wasn't weird at all for the real-life married couple, who also guest on this week's episode, talking to Mike Muncer about that very singular experience. From legendary director Chuck Russell, Witchboard resurrects the '80s horror classic with a chilling new vision. In present-day New Orleans, a cursed artefact unleashes a vengeful witch, drawing a young couple into a deadly spiral of possession, temptation, and occult terror.
Madison Iseman leads a cast which includes Aaron Dominguez, Melanie Jarnson, Charlie Tahan, Antonia Desplat, and Jamie Campbell Bower, and we recently sat down with the Jumanji and Goosebumps star to discuss her role as Emily.
"I've always loved the genre. I've always been a huge horror fan, ever since I was young," she tells us in the video below. "Anytime horror comes across my desk, I'm always a bit excited. For me, though, the biggest pull is that I've always been the biggest Chuck Russell fan. Nightmare on Elm Street, Dream Warriors, The Blob...he's a legend. I was very excited."

The latest from director Johannes Roberts is Paramount’s upcoming horror movie Primate, and it’s bringing its gory mayhem to theaters early next year.
Primate releases in theaters on January 9, 2026.
In the horror movie, a group of friends’ tropical vacation turns into a terrifying, primal tale of horror and survival. No other plot details have been revealed so far.
Roberts co-wrote the screenplay with Ernest Riera. The film stars Johnny Sequoyah and Oscar®-winning Troy Kotsur (Coda).
If Roberts’ involvement and the description of Primate’s plot doesn’t hook you, then it’s worth noting that the upcoming horror movie has been set to open this year’s Fantastic Fest. The festival describes the film as “an unbelievably entertaining horror film, filled with gory mayhem.”
Walter Hamada is producing Primate, part of a new horror pact with Paramount.

Sydney Sweeney made her horror debut in Immaculate, a film about a nun who's "chosen" to conceive the church's redemption. The actor said the movie borrowed themes and stories from horror classics like Rosemary's Baby.
Per Flixpatrol, Immaculate is on Prime Video's Top 10 streaming chart, ranking seventh as of Aug. 13. Reminiscent of the nun-sploitation films of the 70s, the movie featured the same religious themes and body horror as The Devils, Love Letters of a Portuguese Nun and The First Omen. Despite heavy competition from 2024's Ghostbusters and Godzilla x Kong sequels, Immaculate was a commercial hit, earning $35 million against its $9 million budget.
Much of that success was due to Sydney Sweeney's role in the production and development.Immaculate revolves around Sister Cecilia (Sweeney), a novitiate nun assigned to a small-town convent. While fulfilling her vows and tending to their ailing, dying nuns, she spends her first nights having nightmarish visions.

It’s that time again! Cinespia — the Amazon MGM Studios and Prime Video-sponsored Los Angeles staple that showcases film favorites under the stars — has released their spooky October schedule, which includes a roster of classics that are sure to send shivers down patrons’ spines. Appropriately, Cinespia will be held, as always, at Hollywood Forever Cemetery — the starriest place in the city, where everyone from Judy Garland to David Lynch was laid to rest.
Halloween month kicks off, literally, on October 4 with a 50th anniversary screening of the midnight movie favorite “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” — though you only have to wait until sundown to enjoy this screening. You have probably heard that filmmaking is a director's medium. Whether it's ranking directors by their total box office or even their number of "perfect movies," there's no denying that a lot of attention is paid to whoever is sitting in the director's chair. Perhaps this dedicated devotion to directors is unfair to the screenwriters, who, after all, are the artists who put the words on the page that are turned into a movie. Especially since screenwriters suffer through anxiety-inducing levels of input from directors, producers, execs, executive assistants, execs' family members, the janitorial staff, and online bloggers. But if we're being honest, filmmaking is a financier's medium first and foremost, and the bean counters care most about money. In which case, there's a reason the following screenwriters have stayed busy -- their scripts make bank.
While only a few of these writers are Oscar winners, or have written films...

The bloodline was not the “Final Destination” after all. On August 8, New Line and Warner Bros. announced (via Variety) that “Final Destination 7” is officially in the works, complete with “Final Destination: Bloodlines” co-writer Lori Evans Taylor on board. Also returning are producers Craig Perry, Sheila Hanahan Taylor, Jon Watts, Dianne McGunigle, and Toby Emmerich. Warren Zide will serve as executive producer.
The news comes as the studio has yet another horror hit on their hands with “Weapons,” the latest from “Barbarian” director Zach Cregger. In its opening weekend, “Weapons” amassed an estimated $42.5 million at the domestic box office, an impressive debut for a movie that cost $38 million. Similarly, “Bloodlines” opened to $51.7 million in May off a $50 million budget. As of August 10, that movie has gone on to tally over $138 million in North America and $285 million worldwide, bringing in a gigantic franchise haul for the New Line devision of Warner Bros.

In the world of horror cinema, there are few movies as influential as Wes Craven's A Nightmare on Elm Street. Released in 1984, the film helped revitalize the slasher genre by introducing fans to a new kind of villain who wasn't shackled to the restraints of reality, but could kill people in their dreams. As with most horror hits of the time, it helped spawn an entire franchise that lasted well into the 90s, and now, for the first time ever, the entire series is being presented theatrically in stunning 4K thanks to Alamo Drafthouse.
The new remastered theatrical releases will kick off on August 29th at Alamo Drafthouse locations across the country with the original A Nightmare on Elm Street, and run straight through to the end of September with Wes Craven's New Nightmare rounding out the event. Earlier this year, we heard that A Nightmare on Elm Street Part 2: Freddy’s Revenge director Jack Sholder was working on a 4K remaster of his movie. Now that Warner Bros. / New Line Cinema have confirmed that a Nightmare on Elm Street franchise box set will be released on September 30th, Sholder has talked to our friends at Bloody Disgusting about his endeavor to make sure the 4K version of Freddy’s Revenge would be “basically the same” as the original version of the film, “except it’s better.”
Sholder said the 4K remaster “looks gorgeous. It’s beautifully photographed, and all of that comes out. I was able to do a bunch of little tweaks and corrections that were impossible to do when you were just on film. It’s basically the same, except it’s better. There are little, minor tweaks. The Life of Chuck, the latest Stephen King adaptation from Mike Flanagan, who has previously been at the helm of the Stephen King adaptations Gerald’s Game and Doctor Sleep (and is also working on series adaptations of The Dark Tower and Carrie for Amazon Studios) reached theatres at the start of June (you can read our 7/10 review Here). This one is not a horror movie, and JoBlo’s own Chris Bumbray even described it as a “bittersweet tearjerker.” Less than two months after it started playing on the big screen, The Life of Chuck was given a digital release, and you can watch it on Amazon, where it can be rented for $9.99 or purchased for $19.99. But if you’ve been waiting for the physical media release, we have good news for you today: the 4K Uhd, Blu-ray, and DVD release is set for September 30th, and copies are available for pre-order Here.
