While horror remakes are inevitable, its rare that international filmmakers are hired to helm American remakes of their originals. Even fewer filmmakers get to make not one, but Two movies about sentient killer elevators (Killovators? Murdervators?). Lucky for us, Dick Maas laughs in the face of convention. His feature debut, The Lift, is a zany 1980s concoction of A.I. paranoia and cable-attached monsters, kickstarting his career as an odd duckling who cherishes a proper B-Movie script. Movies like Amsterdamned, Prey (aka Uncaged), and Sint would further cement his audacious brand of metropolitan nightmares that treat midnight movie storylines with higher prestige, only adding to the Dutchman’s legacy.
Maas’ The Lift might seem like a strange choice for an American remake—a procedural thriller about corrupt elevator companies—but it’s hailed as one of the Netherlands’ premiere horror imports. Imagine an episode of The Twilight Zone with more...

“From hilarious comedies to impactful reality shows and docuseries, the new ViX Originals exhibits the diversity of genres and storytelling that can only be found on ViX,” said Rodrigo Mazon, executive VP & chief content officer for ViX at TelevisaUnivision.
In a nod to its creative partners, Mazon added: “At ViX, audiences can find content for everyone, consistently maintaining a high standard of quality made by the best content creators of today.”
According to TelevisaUnivision’s 2023 4th Quarter report, the Spanish-language streaming service ended the year with more than 7 million subscribers and generated more than $700 million in revenue.
However, like most other streaming platforms facing competitive headwinds and higher costs, production budgets per episode are being trimmed at ViX, according to sources.

The importance of revenue earned by studios from PVOD rentals reasserts itself with news that, as of Tuesday, all but two of the wide films released from either December 22 or December 25 will have home availability. That’s one month or less after their theatrical releases.
Top holiday grosser “Wonka” (Warner Bros.), which opened a week earlier, sleeper rom-com hit “Anyone but You” (Sony), and “The Iron Claw” remain theater-exclusive. Otherwise, the rush for home gold has taken over.
Three of these titles — “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” (WB), “Migration” (Universal), and “Ferrari” (Neon) debut on Tuesday. They will join “The Color Purple” (WB) and “The Boys in the Boat” (Amazon MGM), both of which came out last week, 22 days after release.
The results for the week actually showed that four earlier films scored better overall during the week. “Purple” did best at Vudu (#4), but only #8 at Apple TV and #10 at Google Play.

Courteney Cox is responding to that Prince Harry psychedelic mushrooms story.
The “Friends” actress is asked about the comments the Duke of Sussex made about her in his memoir Spare during an interview with Variety.
In his much-talked about book, Harry recalls digging in to “a huge box of black diamond mushroom chocolates” while staying at Cox’s house years ago.
Cox laughs, “He did stay here for a couple of days — probably two or three. He’s a really nice person.”
She admits she recently saw him at a birthday party and wanted to say hi, but didn’t because he was talking to other people.
Cox continues, “I haven’t read the book. I do want to hear it, because I’ve heard it’s really entertaining.
“But yes, it’s gotten back to me about it. I’m not saying there were mushrooms! I definitely wasn’t passing them out.

Hypothetical scenario: a serial killer has entered your 10th floor apartment. Against all odds, you’ve managed to barricade him in the bathroom. You run out the door, take the elevator downstairs, get in your car, and flee to the safety of the local police station. Is that the correct thing to do? No. The elevator could decide to kill you, as seen in 1983's The Lift. And if it doesn’t, your car could, like the black sedan in The Car. And if it doesn’t, but you get a flat tire, the spare tire could, as it does in Rubber. Sounds crazy, but if the makers of these films are right, you may never be safe again.

The trope of cursed objects is a unique corner of horror. Not to be confused with killer dolls and mannequins (that's a whole other niche), we're talking about your ordinary household objects come to life to wreck people's lives (and sometimes murder them) in the most bonkers, off-the-wall, and outrageous ways. Perhaps a comet or asteroid crashes into earth, causing a strange transference of energy, or an experiment goes horribly wrong. Sometimes, it's a phenomenon with no logical explanation, so it's even more difficult to defeat.
Cursed and killer objects in the movies ebb and flow with time. The 1970s and '80s were a particularly hot time for the subgenre, featuring a slew of deadly inanimate objects like a killer bed (more on that later), a killer car ("Christine"), a killer elevator ("The Lift"), and a killer lamp ("Amityville 4: The Evil Escapes"). Cursed objects were less prevalent in the '90s,...

He counts Louis Theroux as a fan but struggles to find funding for his off-beat drama-doc hybrids. He explains why he uses non-actors to play themselves – and why he filmed his cleaner finding a cat with a defrosted pigeon in its mouth
While making his first documentary 20 years ago, Marc Isaacs spent two months in the lift of a London tower block, filming the residents coming and going, and asking whimsical questions (“What did you dream about last night?”). That short film, Lift, also featured a fly, which he bought from a pet shop; the insect expired in the final shot. Isaacs hadn’t intended that to symbolise the death of the fly-on-the-wall genre – “It only occurred to me afterwards” – but it fits his philosophy, which spurns any notions of unmediated reality. With the change in seasons comes optimism about coronavirus vaccinations and some mercifully warmer weather. And this time of year, Fox’s “The Masked Singer” and CBS’ “NCIS” come on like lions, making other programs go out like lambs. Will last year’s results predict this spring’s winners? In short, probably. History tends to repeat itself, pandemic or no pandemic. Last spring — by which we mean March 20, 2020 to June 19, 2020 — “The Masked Singer” Season 3 was broadcast television’s highest-rated primetime show among adults 18-49, according to Nielsen, with a 2.91 rating in that key demographic. That number, like all in this story, includes one week of (mostly) DVR viewing. Also Read: 'The Talk' Ratings Down 27% From Last Season - Could Sharon Osbourne Flap Give It a Lift? Runner-up in the key demo was ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy,” averaging a 2.45 rating at the tail-end of Season 16. It’s worth pointing...

With the exception of “60 Minutes,” CBS aired all reruns Sunday night, but the broadcast network still managed to top primetime thanks to a very strong afternoon lead-in: the opening weekend of 2021 NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament a.k.a. March Madness. The Syracuse vs. West Virginia game ended just ahead of a new episode of “60 Minutes,” which was the night’s highest-rated and most-watched show. CBS was first in ratings with a 0.7 rating/5 share in the advertiser-coveted 18-49 demographic and in total viewers with an average of 5 million, according to preliminary numbers. At 7 p.m., “60 Minutes” scored a 1.4/11 and 8.8 million viewers. The rest of the night was filled with drama reruns. KollywoodThe song is written, composed and performed by music director Sean Roldan.Tnm StaffYouTube ScreengrabOnly about a month ago, we saw idly lovers rise up in defence when a British Professor made a “controversial” comment about the simple-looking but most versatile south Indian dish. Now here’s a whole song based on the idly and a condiment that makes for a lip-smacking combination, the chutney. While it sounds like it could go viral on TikTok (ouch) or on Instagram Reels, the song comes with a dash of philosophy too — “Without Idly, there is no chutney […] Without duality, there is no singularity.” Here’s your food for thought, did you see it coming? There was a flurry of news surrounding the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther 2 yesterday, and not only was it confirmed that the sequel would start filming in July, but the first new face in the ensemble has been announced as well. Joining returning stars Letitia Wright, Winston Duke, Angela Bassett, Danai Gurira and Lupita Nyong’o will be Narcos: Mexico‘s Tenoch Huerta as a mystery villain.
This will mark the biggest role of the 39 year-old’s career by far, although he does have plenty of experience working on blockbusters having played the pivotal part of Mexican Man in Lift in James Bond sequel Spectre. There’s still no official word on who he’ll be portraying in the McU pic, but a new report now claims that he might be suiting up as White Tiger, who’s been rumored on a few occasions to be involved in the film.

In the letter, Boone discussed her decision-making process and the media coverage — and social media commentary — that followed the story.
Speaking to Variety at the premiere of her Amazon series “Hunters,” her first public appearance since publishing the letter, Boone discussed the timing of her missive.
“You know, it’s been awhile since all of that happened, since everything came out. I work on my own time. I wanted to deal with it the way I wanted to deal with it,” Boone said. “I didn’t feel like I owed anyone anything. I was going through my own experience.”

(And it's going to be called... Dick Maas: The Documentary) In my home country of the Netherlands, there are plenty of people and filmmakers who are interested in creating genre entertainment, but the industry is generally loath to support them. "Don't try to be Hollywood" is often the advice given to people. Amsterdamned, The Lift and Sint director Dick Maas returns to Dutch cinema screens this Halloween season with his latest piece of crowd pleasing fun Prey (Prooi). And what's next in a career that's seen the director terrorize his home town with killer elevators, killer Santas ad a killer diver lurking in its canals? A killer lion, of course. Maas' Prey turns a big cat loose on the streets of Amsterdam and it's one hungry kitty. Throw a one legged, wheelchair bound hunter into the mix and you've got a recipe for fun. We shared the teaser for this one a while back but with theatrical release coming in just a couple weeks the full trailer is now also available. Check it out below!...
